This is the duplicate armies tourney. The basic idea being that there will be 4 pre-determined battles. Each player will then play each of the 4 battles for 6 rounds. At the end of the day we will know what the average point differential in points killed in each of these battles. Then we will be able to see who made the most of their army and is therefor the most versatile general. It isn't necessary to win each battle to be the best... just lose by less points than everyone else lost by on those tough matchups. Let me know if you want in... tourney locks at 16 participants.....#17 forward go on waiting list.

Battle #1
Cowboys and Samurai stumble into a spooky graveyard late one cloudy night. In the darkness they happen upon 4 empty graves. Looking more closely they discover the headstones read "Truth and History. 21 Men. The Boy Bandit King. He Died As He Lived- Guilty McCreech R.I.P.", " MURDERD BY A TRAITOR AND A COWARD WHOSE NAME IS NOT WORTHY TO APPEAR HERE-Shotgun Johnny R.I.P.", "Pard, we will meet again in the Happy Hunting Ground to part no more, Goodbye- Deadeye Dan R.I.P.", "To save your world you asked this man to die: Would this man, could he see you now, ask why?- James Murphy- R.I.P."
Shocked at seeing their own names on the headstones, each man shakes off a chill as the hair on the back of his next stands. Somewhere in the distance a feral cat mewls and shrieks..... then the first Zombie appears from behind a ruined crypt.

Satyr and I are currently wading through the copious possibilities. I am prepared at this time to say that one of the matchups we like is Undead vs. Cowboy Samurai. We will release the rest of the matchups in the next few weeks as well as what maps will be used.
Alastair is still plugging away at the armies. I put together some balanced thematic match-ups, he's got some ideas of his own, and dnutt, you have quite the list yourself ;)
Alastair should be releasing some additional match-ups soon. I will, however, let the dead out of the box and give up some details ...
Undead vs. Cowboy SamuraiZombies of Morindan x 5
Shades of Bleakewoode x 2
Total: 500 pts
vs
Johnny "Shotgun" Sullivan
James Murphy
Guilty McCreech
Deadeye Dan
Izumi Samurai
Kozuke Samurai
Tagawa Samurai
Total: 510 pts
We've played around with this match-up and had buckshots full of fun. In our games both sides have won. Map design is critical for this battle to help level the playing field ...

We played it out on a new map I created for the scenario.... Cowboy Graveyard... will post it tomorrow. We found we liked 5X Zombies, 1X Shades, Sudema... vs Tagawa, Isumi, Kozuke, Ded, Guilty, James, Johnny. The shades work well with the theme and they have some use to tie up the cowboys ranged attack.
Preview of the next test case... Colman dreamt this up.... Greeks, Parmenio, Marcus, and Valguard vs. MacDirks, Alastair, Thorgy, and Finn..... stay tuned.

I can not take all of the credit. MacD has made some valueble tweaks.
Greeks: 500 pts
MacDirks: 510 pts
Sudema was a good addition to the undead. She gives the undead some "killer" range that was needed to help break up Samurai formations. Totals now stand at:
Undead: 540 pts
Cowboy Samurai: 510 pts

:?: MacDirk do we have a time, a date, and a place for this event :?:
Some more tournament details (created by Alastair MacDirk, modified by Satyr):
The duplicate army tournament is structured to identify the best battlefield strategist; army creation is removed from the equation.
1. The tournament director (TD) will predetermine 4 competitive battles (army / map combinations). Each battle will consist of 2 armies on an appropriate map. All of the armies will be unique to each other and generally be themed to maximize synergies. The armies will generally be around 500 points, but an army will not be restricted by points since a balanced battle is more important than a rigid point structure. Maps will be specifically determined based on the army match-up and will help provide balance when necessary.
2. During the tournament each army / map combo will be represented twice. There will be a total of 8 boards with each army/map combo being duplicated. For example: Map 1 has Marro (A side) vs. Frenzy (B Side), Map 2 has Orc (A side) vs. Knight (B side), ... etc ... then Map 5 again has Marro (A side) vs. Frenzy (B side) and it is an identical army/map combo as Map 1.
3. Participants will be divided into 2 groups. The TD may seed the groups based on previous tournament results to ensure an even distribution of top players. Group A will play one side of all 4 battles and group B will play the other side of all 4 battles.
4. A player will be on a different map/army combo against a different player each game. Each game will last 6 rounds. After the last round, each player will total their points killed to establish a point differential (PD). For example: Player A killed 200 points and Player B killed 75 points, Player A would get a point differential of +125 points and Player B would get a point differential of -125 points.
5. After 4 games an average point differential for each map/army combo will have been established. For example:
Map 1 A side PDs: +125, -100, -25, +75
Map 1 B side PDs: -125,-100, +25, -75
Map 1 A side Average PD: +68.75
Map 1 B side Average PD: -68.75
6. Each participant is then ranked according to how their point differentials compare to the average for each maps. The sum of your net points for each map will determine your ranking. For example: Player X lost on Map 1 with -150 PD and the average for that side of map 1 was losing with a -110 PD ... Player X would net -40 tournament points for that map. Player X won on Map 2 with a 30 PD, the average for that side of Map 2 was losing with a -60 PD ... Player X would net +90 tournament points. Player X would have a total tournament score of +50 points from Maps 1 and 2.
More to come ...

Here is the battlefield I've worked up for Cowboys vs. Zombies. It's called Cowboy Graveyard. Note: the Cowboys graves have been predug... the Zombies only want to help the Cowboys out and prevent them from ever having to fill them. (by turning them into ZOMBIES) It's mostly flat and open to allow the Zombies to work their Zombie Onslaught Special Attack on the Samurai and overcome counterstrike.

Off-Topic FYI
I know there are some 1st edition MS fanatics out there so this posts' for you. Last night at the Walmart in Oakland, (Hegenberger), I came across a 1st edition MS. I already own 9 MS, (along with a ton of other expansions large and small), so I didn't feel the need to make the purchase. I saw some other MS's up top but didn't bother to check to see if by chance there were any more. I took the MS and placed it on the very back of the shelf behind the others in hopes that maybe a fellow member might want to take advantage!
If anyone does purchase it, I'd be interested to know who it is!
:ponder: Maybe I should have bought it and sold it on ebay for a hefty $300 profit,...

Well creating rankings is going to be another whole can o' worms. The initial ranking will most likely have some degree of subjectivity involved unless we just use the results of the last tourney. I don't see myself as the top ranked player though.... maybe 3rd????? JF and Voodoo I would think would rank #1 and #2.... you can't ignore their tourney results from the previous year.... started at last years Kublacon... which is coming around again in May b.t.w.
So let's say we do come up with some rankings. We also need a system to rerank the field after each tourney. Let's say you were #7 and come in 2nd. The guy who was #1 comes in 3rd.... etc. It can get complicated as I don't think you should just rank soleley on the last tourney results... I know that's not how it works in men's tennis.

I know this is a strange suggestion, but the gaming group could choose which player they fear the most in a poll. Take those, consider the results, for ranking in comparison to previous tournament results.

Instead of rankings, why not just divide everyone in the top half from last tournament into two groups, either by random or by ranking, and then do the same with those in the bottom half. If the only goal of the bracketing is just to make sure that not all the players who did well in the last tourney are put together, this splitting would seem to accomplish that. Otherwise, a ranking system seems not only very difficult to do given how infrequently we play, but also fairly subjective. Then again, it doesn't really matter to me too much one way or the other, so more power to you if there's a better way to build this mousetrap. If it comes down to Alastair's and Satyr's most feared strategy, however, I might have to go with some baked beans that have been left out on the counter top for a couple of days in the warm, fresh air to season  Or maybe not.

Alastair has now gotten his butt kicked four times on the Greeks vs the MacDirks match-up ... ok, they were not @ss whoppins and the last one was pretty d@mned close ... proving that the scenario is fairly balanced.
The play testing did expose a potential stale mate scenario with the map, so I'll be modifying it this weekend. The Foestone Wold will be pushed away from the starting zone to the edge of the map and the road will come closer to the starting zones. I'll try and get the mod up ASAP.
If you play as is, it will give you a feel for the match-up and map. I'm not hearing that anyone has tried out the zombie map. How about some feed back!

Bump to let ya know I've updated 1st post. We are close to approving Folestone upon playtesting this week... you can too!!!! We hope to release battle #3 by next weekend and battle #4 by the end of the month. We have good army ideas and they seem balanced under the right conditions and use many figures that NEVER see light of day in common tourney armies and RARELY get drafted in open draft competetive games for fun.
Dund or Spartacus anyone???? Hope this gets your juices flowing and please keep checking as we test and add new battles. I want to leave everyone with ample time to do some homework and prepare for what I'm thinking will be really fun tourney. CCC where the heck are you?????

The map does not need testing to see if it works for any drafted armies. You should play it with the armies suggested.... since it was built with these armies in mind. Play for 6 rounds and only 6 rounds!!!!! Count who has most points killed as winner. Then try a rematch with each player switching armies. Does the same army win or the same player? Then try the Cowboy Graveyard scenario for 6 rounds! Then switch sides, lather, rinse, repeat.

Aldin, I like your ideas ... especially the Wild Hunt. 2 RTtFF minimum needed to do it justice and minimize the effects of frenzied range. May need to add in some more dogs balance it ... but maybe not.
For the upcoming Tournament we are trying to exclude huge figures ... they also are not effected by net trip.
The original match up against the Gladiators was Taelord and the Minions. But it was pointed out that the Minions get plenty of play. I still think the Sparticus/Taelord match-up may be more balanced since the Glads have specials the directly counter the Minions, the minions are slower which minimizes the effect of flight (don't want a flat map), and both Spartacus and Taelord provide power-ups.
I think a 5 move stealth flight common squad is going to mess the Glads up ... let alone the double attack.

My buddy and I are playing this thurs and will use the Foe field. Should we test with the armies above or just draft our own?
I designed the map specifically for the Greek/MacDirk match-up, but tried to keep it versatile for a draft/counter draft game. Not sure what havoc range units will cause on this map. It would be best to test out the scenario and report back ... but if you do play a drafted game I'd be interested to know how that played out.
Since the map is asymmetric, I've been counting hexes every time I pass by the map. The left side (large ruin side) is slightly favored. Since the Greeks are believed to be the under dogs they should start on the 24 rock hex on the left (large ruin side).
On another note, I've created two maps for the Gladiator match-up and have come to the conclusion that neither of them really work ... they are good balanced maps, but not quite right for the Gladiator match-up. Third time is the charm ...
I should have the gladiator match-up roughed out by this weekend.
Alastair MacDirk
March 20th, 2007, 06:40 PM
Well, there is really no need for the map to be balanced for the two sides. I think a map that makes for interesting strategies and takes advantage of different strengths of the units is more important. So don't be surprised that the maps I'm making for this are not balanced, but hopefully make the matchups work.

So for the arena, to oppose the gladiators, how about:
Valguard
Taelord
Khosumet
and as many Dumutefs and/or Swog Riders as it takes to balance it out?

Alastair and I played a couple games last night. The Greeks vs. the MacDirks is a solid scenario. The Greeks are definitely the underdogs, but mind you they have won … it helps if you can roll some symbols. After last night we have certified this match-up and map ... with one last small change on the map ... the single raised grass hex on the road was moved to the edge. I recommend people throwdown on this scenario to feel it out, it is not as straight forward as you would think.
Actually the same is true for the zombie scenario.
The map for the Gladiators vs. the Imperium is getting modified. Two main comments: not enough cover and no opportunities for stealth flight. I'm adding walls/columns and pinch points.
Updated maps coming soon ...
I dont know what I’m going to do with both those armies...
Yeah I agree and I came up with this scenario ... as I was setting up my starting zone the main throught was ... "what the hell is my plan"

Nope. Alastair has plans for Dund and monks. I'm not sure of the full composition of the armies for that scenario, so I'll say no more. He's been tweaking it with Racer X.
I'm sure a pillar or two has been knocked over during playing...?
Actually, I've been knocking over the trees more than the pillars. But to be honest, I knock over trees on every map ... must be the beer. I left the battlements off of the columns to help keep the center of gravity as low as possible. I could replace the pillars with trees, but aesthetically that does not work for me.

Thanks for the kind words. Let me restate that mostly the map is flat and uninteresting to allow the Zombies a chance to work their special onslaught attack. I had to do something to make it visually appealing, have to give my bro "Angus MacDirk" credit for the graves idea and Satyr credit for the headstones from castle crennelations creativity. Now I just need to get some top loaders for my cards so when a figure slips out of someone's pizza grease covered fingers and tips over one of the killing ground column which in turn knocks over my beer, my cards are nice and safe.

I'm not too sure why you are making such a big deal about contributing to the Pizza fund. I've seen you eat pizza before. If you are concerned about food near the game we can simply choose to not combine the two. People who finish up games early gan grab a slice...... oh, ya... forgot who I was talking to- you figure you'll never have a chance to eat because you'll always be the last game to finish??? As for beer getting near the games... not sure there is much that can be done about this, but I seem to remember folks drinking beers at last tourney (and eating). Would be justice perhaps if some beer spilt on one of your maps as I seem to remember your sister's BF (Ross) knocking a nice Microbrew all over a huge map I had set up on my dining room table. I washed it off. It wasn't THAT big a deal.

My buddy will definitely be attending and I am trying to get him to sign up for the forums so he will have an official handle.
Scrolled the thread and found no address for the Pizza place or a start time.
Have those not been established yet?
Also have a real greenhorn coming to observe(hoping to get him to play, we'll see).

Guerillianator and I got in a whopping SIX games last night!
We played the cowboy/undead map three times.
I'll let him report how well I did.
Then we tried the Over-priced armies on the same map for another three games.
Dang - those are fast and furious match-ups!
The Tagawa archers can perform well against those Einar Imperium. 8)
DW8K is either going to make or break the game.
It was a ton of fun for me to finally use those Gladiators proper!
Great match-ups so, far MacDirk.
Here's hoping you'll submit the zombie scenario to an upcoming Codex.

Yeah! Throw the killing grounds in the mix and it definitly helps keep things moving. Those two scenarios are countered by the glad/blast vs. the monks and the all melee match-up ... they seem to play longer, far more tactical thought required.
DW8K is either going to make or break the game. Too true!

News flash-zombies actually playable. :D OK, they only really came through once out of the three games I had with Hex, and probably only because the map was tailored to them, but it was great to actually see them wreak some havoc (of course, its easy to say that about any figures you control). I'd like to tell how I did it, but it involves so much strategy (losely translated as incredibly lucky dice rolling while pursuing obvious tactics) that I'll keep it to myself. The give and take though between the units is great, as the different figures do a great job countering the strengths of the various units. Nice job Allistair (and Satyr?) on setting this matchup.
My fortunes weren't so good, however, in the Gladiators v. Kiova/IE/DW8 we played. Hex made quick work of DW8 in two different games with his Tagawa archers and conversely used his IE very effectively against me when the sides were switched. I think I would have had more luck playing DW7 than DW8, then at least I could have maybe taken someone else out with me instead of whiffing early on the defense dice due to the DW curse :( Is it considered redundant at this point to say "cursed" and "deathwalker" in the same sentence??? :deadhorse: Still though, great to see some of the lesser used figures on the board knowing that the tourney boards will not be laid out with Nilf, Q-9, Raelin, and reavers everywhere. 8)
By the way, I just made my 50th post---Hex, I'm gaining on you

I'll chime in here: I was all thumbs with those SEVEN unique cards.
Had no clue how to handle the cowboys/Samurai scene. I was worried about losing Samurai too early to the zombies and was hoping to get some cowboys closer to take out an expected Sudema. She did indeed arrive, but I couldn't control the fumbles and SNAFUs I continued to make.
I definitely need to re-think that army! As well, the reverse army is just as shakey against those Shotgun Blasts.

Woe be unto he who show up tourney morn unprepared!!!!!! There are special tactics and strategies necessary to playing each of these armies. I'd say the Gladiator v. Imperium might require the least amount of thought... but even so you must be careful how you use DWK.... and of course 1 whiff and it's over. The Cowboy/ Samuria requires alot more thought than most of the others that's for sure.... one small tip: it's about limiting the onslaught attacks. That's all I can say.... good luck!

After playing a couple of games with Hex using the monks v. soulbergs, I'd really like to see someone in the tourney make good use of Dund. I see his potential from playing this battle out twice, but saying a H/S figure has potential is like someone telling you that your blind date has a "nice personality" --- its good to know but probably not the first thing you were hoping to hear. Great decision to include Dund though, if for no other reason then that he doesn't normally get much play time and thus we are all on an equal playing field. I'm curious if someone really relies on him heavily whether it will pay off or just be so many wasted turn markers -- guess its time to go make some offerings to the d-20 dieties (after all, sometimes its better to be lucky than good).

Gremlins, McDonald's, Porn, and Zombies? I do not see how that will help my preparations... oh, now I see, that is exactly your intent, to disarm me with these wonderful distractions...
I shall not! My objective is clear as mud. You can learn a lot from pondering mud. And Sun-Tzu.
Come, listen. Sun-Tzu has this to say about the turtle:
The Duke of Ch'u sent envoys to find Chuang Tzu and ask him to become the Duke's chief minister. They found him out by a river, fishing, with a contented look on his face. They interrupted his reverie by asking him to come to the capital to work for the Duke.
Chuang Tzu, upon hearing their request, related a tale. "I have heard of a sacred turtle in Ch'u that died three thousand years ago. The Duke keeps it wrapped in a special cloth and guarded in a special temple. May I ask if the turtle prefers to be dead and worshipped or if the turtle wanted to be alive and crawling around in the mud, dragging its tail?"
The envoys replied, "Of course, the turtle would want to be alive and crawl around in the mud!"
"Then go home," said Chuang Tzu. "I also want to be alive and crawl around the mud, dragging my tail."
Now ponder this:
Each game will last 5 rounds.
I think the turtle will want to be alive and crawl around in the mud, dragging his tail.
Satyr

[Assess] them to find out their plans, both the successful ones and the failures ... Test them to find out where they are sufficient and where they are lacking ... the ability to gain victory by changing and adapting according to the opponent is called genius.
You doom is sealed
Heads up EVERYONE. Alastair increased the round limit to * 6 * a while back. Play testing showed that round 5 was often the tipping point ... it could go either way ... after round 6, it is usually pretty clear. I'll go back and edit that post. Grim, thanks for pointing that out.
Satyr

So, if we are counting points killed ...
If the shades steal two of my cowboys and I have to kill them, who gets the points for the kill? Morning Star did this to me and we ruled that since they started the game as my units, she got the kills ... talk about salt in the wound.
Seems to make sense since if it was a normal points remaining scoring, she would have claimed the cowboy points if they survived till the end of the game.
Zombies may seem complicated, but it’s just a matter of how many are dead at the end of the game.
What say ye ???

Greeks: 500 pts
MacDirks: 510 pts
Undead: 540 pts
Cowboy/Samurai: 510 pts
Imperium: 500 pts
Gladiators: 510 pts
Glad/Blast: 490 pts
Monks: 460 pts
I would buy into the remaining points if most of the beginning point differentials are what you would normally see in a tournament. In this case, however, the monks and Cowboy/Samurai are short a full 30 points (an enitre unit). In a normal tournament I'd shove in guilty, a swog or a Dumatef to fill the points. I'm not saying we should add another unit to these armies, but these armies start off handicapped ... this was on purpose with the undead, but what about the monks ???
And lets not forget our Turtle ;)

I am shocked.... shocked that you of all people are bringing up the army sizes. Because I know you know that army A could be comprised of units totalling 535 points and army B could have 185 points at thebeginning of the game, and while that would matter in ANY OTHER TOURNAMENT, this is a duplicate armies tourney. Therefore you are only compared on a +/- basis of the point differential at the end of the battle to all the other folks that played the map.... as long as we all have the same armies, and we will, it doesn't matter how many points the armies are or however else they may be mismatched. Shhhheeeeeesh!
I see now that you only threw this out rhetorically so I would have to explain the entire concept again. Yo

And after a day of sneezing into my hand (in an attempt to not spread germs) and then moving figures (the same ones everyone else will eventually use) you would all have it - and it is not something nice. Yesterday, no matter how hot my body was, my bones literally felt like they were shivering/shaking apart!

Great set up, I think it will be hard to top the tourney format of preset armies and point differentials. Not only is the scoring system fair, but playing a variety of H/S figures on different boards is a lot more fun that facing the same recurring tourney foes all the time. Can't wait for the next together sometime down the line.
FYI-I have decided in the interest of common decency to never, never, ever wear the prize I received today (who knows, it may end up on a prize table in the future???)

Guys,
Thanks so much for having me and jason there. We had a blast. It actually revived our HS fervor. We've only been playing each other for so long we can almost always predict whats going to happen, Jason kicks my ass.
Satyr congrats on the winning most entusiastic as well as the Nor Cal Trophy. You and Alastair are Zombie Masters.
Sorry we had to leave so quickly I promised my wife we would be on our way home by 5:00. Next time I will plan for a little extra time.

Pizza, Beer, and Heroscape!!!!!!!!! How could in not be a great tourney!!!
As predicted by Guerillanator, Dund let me down.... I'm going to have to point the finger of blame on Dund for my lack of success at the tourney.
Congratulations again to Mr. Satyr........huzzah !
I need to thank the folks that were instrumental in making the tourney a success witht their help.
 Satyr for helping create the battle scenarios.
 Racer X for negotiating our way back into the venue and for being the pizza wrangler.
 Heretic for putting his Masters degree in statistics to good use by crunching the numbers.
 Hex, 1more, and Dnutt for bringing maps and figures
Regarding the format: Heretic has some interesting ideas about a similar, yet different tourney. Each player would bring 2 pre-built armies and could base them on any synergies, theme, or idea they'd like. Each player would bring some terrain pre-built into modular sections. On gameday the maps would be created from the MODS and 2 armies would be picked (by the group?) to face off on these new maps. Then we'd do the same as this tourney and you'd play one of those armies on each map against a different player.... similar scoring although we may figure out a correction for strenght of schedule (SOS) whereby if you play 4 patsies you'd accrue less points than someone who played 4 players with high scores. It needs alot of discussion before it is ready to roll out. But it is a decent idea. I see room for problems with the way that the modular maps could end up making every map being favorable for ranged and flying units because they are so complex. We most likely have a couple of months to work it out.
DAMN- it didn't take long to strip me of my title under my avatar.... now I'm back to being a nobody

Again great tourney and big Huzzah to Satyr, our new NorCal Champion!!! May the mantle of title holder rest but briefly upon his weary shoulders.
CBR:
It was great meeting you, Jason and the other distant players. We should be getting together more often for games. The Bay Area isn’t that big.
Regarding revived HS fervor:
After the tourney, I was up late engaged in a roaring debate (with myself) about how much new HS stuff I NEEDED to buy. The only thing that saved my wallet from a serious hit was the time of day.
Regarding a new format:
Firstly, yesterdays tourney was fantastic, the maps and pre-chosen armies were well balanced and a lot of fun to play. The scoring system, using a player’s differentials from the average (DFA?), was brilliant, and the concept of incorporating a correction for strength of schedule (SOS) would make it even better.
With that said, the only element I can think to improve on would be the amount of randomness and uncertainty in the tournament. The overriding concept would be to alter the format so we reward the General who can think best on their feet and most effectively use an army they have never seen before.
In order to accomplish this, all we need do is have each participant bring 2 pre-built armies to the tournament. We would then have twice as many armies as needed to assign to each map. We could randomly select 1 of each person’s 2 armies and randomly assign it to a map, or pick the army match-ups by consensus. This would leave 1 leftover army per person to be used as a substitute army in case some armies are too similar, or someone can’t bring any armies, or if someone only brings totally unplayable armies.
For the maps we have two choices. The first and most random option would be to use pre-built modular sections (MODS) that each participant brings and we snap together at the tournament. This ensures that no one would be able to pre-play any of the maps, but could lead to some really unbalanced maps. The second and probably best option would be to just use entirely pre-built maps that have been posted and approved for play ahead of time.
Then we game on in a similar manner as yesterday’s game. Record differentials at the end of a set number of rounds, and use the differentials to calculate DFA and SOS to determine which General is the most versatile, knowledgeable, quick witted, bad ass of the group.
So is next weekend too soon?

Great gameday tourney.
Congradulations for the new title Satyr, long over due...considering all the gameday's you have been a major part of.
Great structure of the tourney, it was refreshing. Thanks Heretic for the numer crunching. Thanks Satyr for map layouts and play testing. Thank to...I can't remember your name, the guy who had this idea for this tourney in the first place...was it Dirk? Al?, oh, nevermind...thanks again.
For everyone else, it was great seeing the the regular faces: HEH, G-Nator, Racer X, Grim, Rich, and Dnutt. Also, it was great to see some new faces at the tourney, hopefully we keep seeing you in the future.
As for sadness, sorry to see Malechi ill, no Aldin, no Morningstar, no Sexymama, no Mrs.1moreheroscaper, no CCC members, no Reapersaurus(for sometime now), no ToryAdore either, and no Silverstoner. Just letting it be known that all previous attendees were missed.
KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN FOR THE NEXT VALLEYDWELLERS GAMEDAY THREAD! I already have more ideas on how to determine player match-ups randomly, but predetermined schedules. Some players will be playing 2-part maps for quest, other players will play the role of the defenders. I also like the idea of pre-made defending armies for each map. Perhaps the questing player will have a pre-determined army pool to choose from at the start of their quest...more clarity and details to come.

i really like the idea of bringing partial maps and marrying them to get some truly unique and varied terrain.
Mostly I would like to put myself out there to play some non-tourney action sometime soon.

Congratulations Satyr! Way to win with the McDirks. And that final "blessed" dice roll was amazing.
I really liked the Battlelord format. And it was fun to play with lesser-used figs. Thanks to Alastair and all who helped put this together. Huzzah!
I also like Heretic's ideas for a modification, not knowing all the armies in advance.
...
On the cards, you're welcome. Reminder that I just printed them. Raudulfr Shieldcrusher created them:

...
dnutt: you got your revenge on me, and it was a crushing win. Well done!
...
On that McD topic, I am quite upset at myself for disobeying my own pre-battle orders. I was supposed to just wait. And wait. And wait. Overextending Alastair but doing nothing else. Buffing the Warriors up to 6-7 attack. More importantly, staying on the start zone high ground. Two outcomes were conceivable:
1. Boring tie. CONS: not getting ++ point differential. PROS: not getting butt kicked.
2. Rounds 5-6 or just 6, McDirka-dirka attackery goodness. Possibly gain some points, possibly lose a squad or two. But again, better than getting slaughtered.
I think the other 3 maps average point diff was generally near 0 (nice!), but the McDirks lost by an average -100. So, yeah, in 20/20 hindsight, it seems to me that turtling McDirks was the best strategy.
And that's something to keep in mind for future maps, I think. Perhaps start zones should be 1. totally open, and 2. lower elevation, to eliminate the turtle strategy.

The "fetal position in starting zone" strategy could be countered by a decent suggestion by Guerillanator.... at the end of the game. Deduct pts for each figure still in starting zone. I would add that it should be doubled for a double based figure or the points lost should be a % of the figures value (25%????) , get Spartacus up off his a s s.
Heroscape cards like baseball cards??????? I not only didn't get any, I didn't even see any. I don't even know what you all are talking about. Thanks Grim!

I like the suggestion. That was my only teensy-weensy concern about the tournament structure/style- the possiblity of holding points back in the starting zone.
But my concern is not from playing experience - on Saturday NONE OF MY OPPONENTS PLAYED THIS HOLDING-OUT TACTIC! Great adversaries all the way down the line.
