Here I just transferred over something from the contest thread. So as to keep all my custom terrain in one place.
http://upload4.postimage.org/261407/Runetiles.jpg (http://upload4.postimage.org/261407/photo_hosting.html)
I started with sand tiles (2 seven hex and two singles)
http://upload4.postimage.org/261421/Runegreenstf1.jpg (http://upload4.postimage.org/261421/photo_hosting.html)
Add some green stuff.
http://upload4.postimage.org/261424/Runegrnstf2.jpg (http://upload4.postimage.org/261424/photo_hosting.html)
Sculpt the green stuff to look like stones and mortar.
http://upload4.postimage.org/261435/Runeblackwash.jpg (http://upload4.postimage.org/261435/photo_hosting.html)
Paint the stones grey with some slightly lighter and some slightly darker. Then put a black wash on it.
http://upload4.postimage.org/261450/Runehighlights.jpg (http://upload4.postimage.org/261450/photo_hosting.html)
Paint the lines in between the stone hexes a medium green. Darken the mortar areas, Put some highlights on the stones.
http://upload4.postimage.org/261456/Runefinalpaint.jpg (http://upload4.postimage.org/261456/photo_hosting.html)
http://upload4.postimage.org/261503/Runegrass2.jpg (http://upload4.postimage.org/261503/photo_hosting.html)
Add some grass.
http://upload4.postimage.org/261462/Runeruinpaint.jpg (http://upload4.postimage.org/261462/photo_hosting.html)
Paint another 7 hex.
http://upload4.postimage.org/261516/Runegrass3.jpg (http://upload4.postimage.org/261516/photo_hosting.html)

Ruins of Doran Downs at Muirwood Court!

I'm currently working on some walls to go around this. I need more green stuff though.

This is a strange idea I came up with a while back. "Magnetic fields"
This is how we have played it.

Add one defense die when attacked by any adjacent robot or soulborg while either or both of you are standing on a magnetic field tile.
Add one die to your defense when attacked by any metallic projectile weapon from a non adjacent tile that takes a path that crosses any magnetic field tile.

The magnetic fields in affect slow down the soulborgs and make the projectiles waver off course a little.
The blue is the Magnetic field tiles and the black tiles are Tar tiles

It's a muddy trail or possibly a hard pack trail. You can make it so it slows movement or speeds up movement like the road.

We'll have to see what everybody wants to do. I'm planning on putting the stone floor on the high ground in the middle of a 2 vs 2 map. Maybe it'll be a glyph area...

All very creative ideas, and very well executed visually. The magnetic field is an idea I have never seen on the boards, so kudos to you for originality.

The splatter marks on the snow remind me of the terrain images from the Heroscape Master set rulebook. Instead of a solid brown plasitc, the images show the terrain to be speckled, giving it a better terrain texture. Unfortunately, the actual sets come with solid plastic without the cool speckles... but such details are minor.

Again, nice work with these.

Man, I wish I could be there...your stuff looks great. If you are going to make next month's tourney (wherever that may be...no one has taken it yet...hint, hint  ) you gotta build at least one of the maps.

Thanks! The magnetic fields are play tested and we haven't found any problems with them yet.
I put some black specks on the sides of some of my tiles. I'll have to get an image up for people to see. You just stack the tiles and flip them over then use the spray paint "splatter technique". In case people don't know what that is, it's when you only push the nozzle down a little and the spray paint spits. I turned it upside down so it didn't spray on the top of the one tile that would have been exposed in the stack.

Custom snow and ice tiles (way before Tundra)

Great stuff! I have a few questions for you. From your photo it looks like you painted the sides of the hex tiles to make them grey/white. How does this effect the tiles ability to fit with other tiles? Does the paint start to scrape off after awhile? And what kind of paint did you use and how thick is it on the tile?

Thanks!

Thank you!

I used spray paint for those. I have't had a problem with it chipping off. It's not very thick at all. I use a high end spray paint. Krylon (at least) or Belton Moltow(sp) out of Germany. Then I splatter sprayed it with a bunch of different colors. You can't tell from the photos but I also sprayed a clear glitter spray. and then to finish it off I used a brayer to roll white paint just on the tops of the tiles. Oh, and then I also hit it with a little clear coat.
They only stick a little bit when putting them together. Really not that bad.

any tips for giving grass tiles a dark grayish tint? i'd like to turn some of my terrrain into a graveyard.
It might be interesting to keep the green areas and just change the brown areas to a gray... I played with a picture in Photoshop to get an idea what it might look like.
You could spray the whole thing a dark gray and then use a sponge or a brayer to paint the tops back to green. With a sponge you could combine a couple of gray greens.

Or to be real simple you could just use a burnt umber glaze or wash over the grass tiles. That might look dirty... but, that might be perfect for a graveyard. Instead of drilling holes and having removable gravestones you could just glue them to a single hex that would almost look like a mound of dirt.

I find it hard to place the ruins on some of the more complicated maps. I also don't like the fact that they all look the same.
Here are some images of some altered ruins.

First I cut the ruins in have with a dremel.
http://upload4.postimage.org/448344/Cutruins.jpg (http://upload4.postimage.org/448344/photo_hosting.html)
I added some green stuff to the hollows of the cut ends. Then I added some damage texture similar to the rest of the ruin.

http://upload4.postimage.org/448347/RuinsGrnstff.jpg (http://upload4.postimage.org/448347/photo_hosting.html)

http://upload4.postimage.org/448349/RuinsGrnstff2.jpg (http://upload4.postimage.org/448349/photo_hosting.html)

I painted the ruins a sloppy medium gray.
Then I added a black wash.

http://upload4.postimage.org/448355/Ruinwash.jpg (http://upload4.postimage.org/448355/photo_hosting.html)
http://upload4.postimage.org/448378/Smruinedge.jpg (http://upload4.postimage.org/448378/photo_hosting.html)

Finally I added some highlights and a little bit of vine.
http://upload4.postimage.org/448368/smruinedge2.jpg (http://upload4.postimage.org/448368/photo_hosting.html)

http://upload4.postimage.org/448400/smruins.jpg (http://upload4.postimage.org/448400/photo_hosting.html)

After cutting the ruins I realized that the corners worked fine but the straight pieces need something to keep them from falling over.
I decided to glue them to a 2 hex piece. Then I added some rubble and vines

After making acouple mastersets of beautified terrain following Grishnakh's
great tutorial, I noticed that the ruins looked very bland on the map. A quick wash of watered down black paint greatly improves them.

They're still more than big enough to hide squad figures. I think a taller one might be a good idea. I'll have to try that.

Those are my Tar tiles. I have some modified Obsidians on my customs thread that work with my tar tiles. We've come up with a few different sets of rules for them. Sometimes we just use them as if they slow you down like heavy snow or slippery Ice and we've also played them where you have to roll a certain number to get out. The larger the figure is the harder it is for them to get out.

While i feel like sounding stopid, what is a "wash"? I usualy drybrush, but that is a pain in the ass so i wounderd if this would be any better. I assumed it was a waterd down paint but I don't wnat to make any mistakes. When i do my masters in the G man's flocking way il want to jazz up my tiles and roads and such.

When I refer to a wash I mean a wash and wipe technique. Just put a watered down dark paint over something and then either wipe off the paint with a dry or slightly moist paper towel or blot it off with the paper towel. The idea is to leave the dark paint in the recesses and cracks and wipe off the high points. This will add to the natural shadow and highlight affects. Then you can add a dry brush over the top to give it an even lighter highlight.

OK, I know of the tecknique, but not it's name. I like how well it makes wood look if you paint, say Balsa, brown then wipe off the paint it stains the wood just enough to look good.

I will try this on a ruin of myne, I plan of flocking it all and, so knowing what to do with my extra ruins. What, did you do about the road tiles.

Sorry, for my bad spelling I am being rushed by the family to roll the freaking dice.

I still want to try bricks and cracked dry mud.

Bricks? As in a building? Would be interested to see the end result! I toyed around with the idea of using lego (I kid you not) by cutting off the knobly bits, covering each brick in modelling putty and then painting them before joining the together. I reckon that could be quite effective. Would just have to use a bit more putty to fill in the gaps.

Then I decided to make the ruins so that they could be placed on the battlefield just about anywhere. I cut bases similar to the Heroscape ruins out of thin plastic.
Then I cut the ruins and glued them on top.
