View Full Version : THE most amazing customs (plural!) ever created! (by C.A.)

I had to start this thread because I know CupidsArt wouldn't do it himself :P.
Adding to the original most amazing custom far below, are three new ones he brought as prizes to the Dallas Team Tourney.
Temple
I heard he laser etched the detailing into these tiles and columns. I hope he clarifies on this because it is pretty cool. I love how he paints HS figures to look like statues.

Castle Ruins
This was my personal favorite because it looks so realistic, yet is not so drastically changed as to not be seamlessly integral into the official game pieces. The castle tower would be an interesting perch for flying figures.

Soulborg Refueling Station
Cool idea, I bet it acts as a interesting line of sight and movement blocker, except for those darn rats!
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10083/normal_soulborgRefuelingStation.jpg
Plane Wreck
The idea that the one wing is separate and can be integrated into your map differently every time is very cool to me. I love the realism of the torn up grass into sand and black charred earth underneath the plane, and a wheel somehow ended up next to a rock.

Below is the Sudema's Tomb prize he brought to the Columbus Tournament on Feb. 24. When he brought it in and set it down, a crowd of about 12 people stood around just marveling at the natural realism and attention to detail. There was a $100 cash prize at this tournament, but the winner choose this piece instead. There is no doubt that this is a true work of art easily worth over $100 in materials, time, skill, and aesthetics! CupidsArt is an amazing artist, and definitely proves he is worthy of his "Resident Artist" title here.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10083/SudemasTomb_side.jpg
There's even a dead human near his mouth! The dim orange light inside the tomb turns on and off and has 3 on modes: steady on, fast blinking, and slow pulse.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10083/SudemasTomb_CU.jpg
It's as if some giant dog-like creature just died on a hillside trying to get into a cave hole that was just too small.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10083/SudemasTomb_top.jpg
If only everyone could see the other customs I have seen in CupidsArt's house . Sudema's Tomb was the most elaborate and realistic piece I saw. I think everyone would enjoy if he would post pictures of his other work too, but I know he is working on more things now ;). It's hard to believe he gives this stuff away!

Gosh, CA, that's an amazing slab of terrain. If it wasn't for the horns, I woulda guessed that's Grimnak's T-Rex's skeleton lying there with his last Chomped in his mouth.
Love the cave light! Sudema's either got a raging disco inside or...faulty wiring.

Wow, I wish I could remember. This piece has been around for a long time, I've tweeked it little by litte so much that there are probably a billion little things, but I know it did involve lots of time, Sculpey, several different paint jobs and 2 defferent flocks.
I will say that this piece was my baby for a long time so take care of it, :D

Seriously nice work. I've been wanting to attempt an all inclusive, set piece like this myself for quite a while now but time constraints have kept me from doing it. I'm glad to see another talented terrain builder step up and experiment with these hexes. Out of curiosity, are you a current (or ex) Warhammer player? I've talked with a lot of terrain builders in that community and have utilized a lot of their techniques for the Heroscape hexes.

There are a lot of miniature games out there to pull influences from. Warhammer being arguably the largest and most well known. I am impressed with the cave it looks great and it just goes to show that some creativity can go a long way to enhance the games visuals. I am just thrilled to see more people making their own terrain pieces, and it shows also that Hasbro could put out a few obstacle box sets for us all to use. Not just trees but, chests, shrines, wells, rock formations, portals, fences, supply box stacks, etc. The list can go on. These things don't just add cover, they add to the visuals of the game which is part of it's charm.

Okay guys I set up a scenario where Sudema has stolen an item (artifact glyph) from Utgar that is used to call and control undead (shades and zombies) and for some reason werewolves for lack of a better unit. I will take some pictures and post them tonight or tomorrow for you guys to see the terrain piece in action. Jesse and I played a few games on it, and even though he kicked my butt with his airborne elite and microcorp agents, it was a ton of fun and really adds alot to the atmosphere of the game.

Whoah. CA, is there no end to your talent? The ruins are my favorite.
I can see the plane wreckage utilized visually for a neat-o scenario: Two armies vying for sensitive documents left in the wreckage. A General of Valhalla summoned the ace pilot to Vahalla to assist in the BoAT, but he (and his plane) did not survive the summoning.
When a figure is adjacent to the plane, roll the D20, on a 17 or higher, the plans have been located! Take them and run!
Awesome! The Anubians look positively howlin' in this picture! Sudema's Lair is great too, of course!

i was just saying out front (in the quick reply area) that maybe we should get some of our HS artists to do a custom battlefield for a special game at GenCon. GF9 creates them for the Clix games by wizkids (you should see the AVP field for this summers con's, all i can say is WOW).
maybe have a contest? people can submit a couple of pieces, say 3, before the end of may, and then let the online community vote during the month of June. the the top 3 pieces could be the center piece for 3 different custom fields for tourni winners, game designers and a couple of "lucky's" (drawn through random lott).
for that matter, just having some of them on display at the con would be awsome. i know i'll be looking for them when i'm there this year...

That would be fun, I'd love to make a semi-big "---------- -----" for the Con that folks could play a few games on, :D

Or even have all pieces in a single map, with players submitting all terrain for a total custom table (flocked, lava'ed, tundra'ed).

March 14th, 2007, 12:24 PM
i think with 3 different tables, we could have more people getting to play on the wonderful sets. maybe the winner at each table could get "pick" of the customs at the table as prize? or they could be auctioned? internet silent auction maybe? i know i'd love to get my hands on that Einar Bridge...

I love the ruined castle. That just begs for a portable ladder custom/house rule, so you can get your ranged units up there. Still it would be an awesome piece to have, along with all your stuff, CA!

Hi CupidsArt :)
I saw the first "dead beast custom" a while ago and thought, "wow, very nice crafted and cool looking". And now i´m checking again your thread and see that you made even more customs on such a high level, thank you so much for sharing the pictures, these are awesome!
Looking forward to see more of your creations! What about an Anubian pyramid/temple, sandstone/desertlike with some hieroglyphic decoration ? :)

Wow that's the coolest HS stuff I've ever seen. I would love to see a full map made with Grishnak's terrain decorated with several of these set pieces. Man - how cool would that be?

Wow those custom pieces are AMAZING! You inspire me CA, I've been wanting to try and use sculpty for making custom pieces. I have an idea for a modification of the Elf Bridge that Ch1can0 made.
Also, did you paint your sculpty? Or did you use some that was already colored the way you wanted? And if you DID paint it how/what did you use to go about it.
Thanks and keep up the AWESOME work!!

No, I set the pieces up in Corel and cut them out on a lazer engraver (PVC). From that point, it's just glue and paint (kinda' like a model car), :D
I'm going to try and use nothing but my own set ups.

It's hard to tell from the pics how good these are so to be compeltely fair I request Cupid that you send me all of your custom terain pieces so I may accurately evaluate them....of course not only will the in person inspection help in my comments but the years and years of game play and enjoyment they may or may not bring will also be factored into the equation. Thank you in advance for your cooperation as i want to be fair to the community.

I'd assume that this particular tool is borrowed from work or school, but in the off chance it isn't, how much would something like that set you back?

A good USED lazer engraver with a 18"x24" bed will run you around $12,000 to $15,000. A Really nice NEW one can run you up to $30,000, :?
I'm in the motions to buy the one I used for this project from the company I work for at $5,000,
It is an investment but the buy also comes with a lifetime labor warranty (meaning a guy will come and fix things for free, the parts aren't free but the work is, lol)
There are a few small-bed models in the works from a few companies (12"x12") that aren't on the market yet that will run you around $6,000. Of course the dpi quality drops just as much as the price.
Smiles,
CA

I was thinking the same thing, Onacara. CA, if you could produce stuff this wicked, say, once a day (assuming you work 8 hours on each one), and eBay them, you could quit your job.
Or you could just make a couple a month and bring in extra scratch. I mean, you could be the undisputed king of custom terrain. You could make terrain for other games, too - just ruined buildings, or monster lairs, or demon summoning chambers, or rune-scribed obelisks, or.. well, hell, the sky's the limit.

@Imax
That is the eventual goal I'm trying to set for myself (not doing terrain only but making it a part of my freelance). Most of these pieces are made for experimentation. I want to be able to make a set of kits that folks can order and do there own terrain and do it at a price that makes me a little scratch but won't kill a person's wallet. :D
I've been trying to study more games out there so I can get a better idea of what folks want as well.
I made the warehouse in about 5 hours (excluding the time it took me to build it in Corel 30 min, and the time on the Lazer about 37 min) to build start to finish. I figure once I actually get used to making custom or wargame terrain I may get a little faster at it.
Example: The first time I made "Illwing Temple" (the temple piece from the TX tourny), it took me about 6 hours of work. I'm working on a new one now and so far (almost done) it's only set me back a Hour - Hour and a half minuse the time on the lazer.
I think I like making the terrain more than I do making custom figures, , I'm still making custom figures though and wait until I unvail my "Primo" custom, (which in case nobody knows, is a nod to "Doctor Solar") I'm kinda' proud of it. It'll be my first complete green-stuff sculpt that I share on the site. At 7 inches tall, it's a lot of Green-Stuff to boot.
