View Full Version : Is Aldin the official "greeter?"

I searched to see if there was already a topic, but got no results so don't hurt me if theres already a topic.

Aldin, I'm relatively new (no need to greet me, i think you already did) but i've been around long enough to see that you always greet people.
And you always greet them with a "Laurel and hearty handshake"

Sooooooooo. . . . why did he start? or was he asked to do it? or is he posessed by a freindly demon?

We need to get him some sort of badge. Hmmm, perhaps a uniform?

*chuckle*

I appointed myself because I hated the idea of anybody new falling through the cracks, so as a sorta new year's resolution I decided I would greet everyone. The laurel and a hearty handshake reference I stole from a buddy of mine who greeted people on an old Arcanum board. He, in turn, stole it from Blazing Saddles, a Mel Brooks movie.

After a few weeks of greetings, Cavalier recommended a new title for me (I used to be "Pat", having made a certain gender neutral comment after an internet gender violation of unspecified nature - please forgive me, bunjee :) ) and a week or two after that I awoke to find myself at least semi-official, though no admins have ever contacted me in regard to my greetings.

And I am loving it! I love ferreting out people who register and then don't make their first post until three weeks later. I love trying to devise clever ways to recognize unique things about someone. I love having people try to beat me to a greeting or tease me about a greeting. I love meeting new people who share the same interests as I do.

This is a great site and I am deeply indebted to Truth for giving me such a spiffy stomping ground to call my own.

Aldin's got a lot of love to share, huh?

I've had interests in other forums sites and joined without receiving a hullo or handshake. It's not necessary for me to be acknowledged, but
it makes all the difference knowing someone recognizes a new person and goes out of their way to affirm them into their community.
And it helps to wipe that "elitist" poop silly, offended monkeys tend to fling when their dander is up.
I appreciate Aldin's hard work and commitment to welcoming the newly joined.
:cheer:

By the way, the NorCal gaming group has a great mascot because of Aldin!

Count me in as another Aldin greeting fan. I'm tempted to put on fake glasses w/big rubber nose and join under a different name so I can get my greeting.

What really impresses me, though, is that Aldin's greetings aren't cut-and-paste jobs. Each greeting is unique and pertinent to the topic under discussion.

I'd like to join the bandwagon and say that I'm most definately an Aldin fan. My first memory of HSers is Aldin's unique greeting directed towards me.

I've used my screen-name (auralerogeny) in several different things over the past few years, and he's the first one to guess one of the several ambiguous meanings, which I was very impressed with. Many people think it's just a jumble of letters, others believe that I made up a new word, and others think I'm being pretentious. Well, it's not, I didn't, and I'm not.

Aldin is the first to hit so close to the mark. I was very impressed with his astute interpretation, right off the get-go on one of my very first posts. That greeting has stuck in my mind for the past several months, and to me it was a momentous occasion.

I still enjoy reading all of Aldin's greetings. Even though I know I'm going to read the magical phrase again (I extend to you a laurel and a hearty handshake) there's always something interesting that follows. I even like the perspective from which he chooses to remark after he signs his name.

I'm very happy to see a thread of congratulations for one of our most agreeable members. I, among the many other people who already have, thank you Aldin for your warm welcomes to all who are seeking a new home.

Smoke drifted from a certain corner of the battered field as the remaining companies of Einar's army reassembled for a head count. The twisted forms of Marro and hacked remains of scores of orcs cluttered the open plain, evidance of the day's work. Numerous members of the elite Sacred Band slumped into the ground, exhausted and traumatized. They might have been embarrassed as well were it not for the deep sense of loathing each man felt. Even the stalwart IXth seemed uncertain of what to do next. These men had been witness to many things since their mysterous arrival to Valhalla. They'd seen dragons ripe whole armies to shreds. They'd fought beasts of iron that did not bleed. And more than once, they'd charged into battles from which none of them should have survived. But nothing had prepared them for what they'd seen this day.

Aldin was more than a captain, more than a leader of men, more even than a legend. He was a sacred symbol to the Sacred Band. He was... their avatar. Many a stout soldier took renewed strength by just the sight of the fearless Aldin on the battle field. And more than a few enemies had refused orders to attack on the certain knowledge that against such a foe, death was the likely fate which awaited them. And so it was with predictable distress that the proud companies of Romans beheld thier leader as he strode onto the field that fateful morning. Gone were the stately robes and gleaming sword which had previously adorned their hero. In their place Alden, the Great Alden of the Band of Warriors Sacred, wore ...dare anyone even say it... a sack fashioned cheaply and of no seemliness to speak on. Was it drunkeness? Was it some ploy to confuse the enemy? Or perhaps he'd fallen under some vicious spell not easily broken. No one could fathom it. Few dared even to try. But as SilverBlade rode a massive white Clydesdale up along side Aldin, he watched with relief as the hero finally returned to his robes, and gerthed himself once more with his sword belt, and took up his sheild. SilverBlade stole one last glance at the foul bag which now lay pressed into the mud, and articulated words which every soldier on the field wanted, needed, to be said. "Please don't ever do that again...!"

I'm guessing it means he's an audiophile. One who likes the ultimate in stereo systems. Having seen the prices for the best gear, I'm more of an audiophobe myself. Unlike a lot of people, I can tell the difference in high-end systems, but I can't see spending more on speakers than on a car.

I'd still like to know where all these laurels come from. At the rate they're handed out Aldin's burning through a warehouse full of them.

Marduk, you are very close. However, I drive an older car, that still has a tape deck only and the crappy speakers that came with it. I also would never buy speakers that are more expensive than the car. And if I did buy speakers for my car, they would be more expensive than the car itself, because my car is a POS.

I can tell the difference between a high end system and "other" systems. I have a moderately decent recording studio in my home, the extra bedroom is half full of recording equipment and instruments. I've been a musician for most of my life, and I've been composing for as long as I've been playing. Even in my recording studio, however, I unfortunately don't have a high end speaker set up there either. I've spent more money on the software and various recording components so far, but believe me, I'm aching for a good set of surround monitors.

The term "auralerogeny" is something I came up with a long time ago. I didn't invent the words, but I really liked the way that they roll off the tounge, and I really think that it's meaning very closely applies to me.

The term "aural" means of or pertaining to the ear. It's not "oral" which means the mouth. Many people overlook this, and think that my name pertains to a specific sexual act. That's what my own mother thought...

"Erogeny," means to excite, or stimulate. It's another word that can easily be portrayed in a sexual way, however again, that is not my intention.

I do get a kick at how many people interpret this combination of words incorrectly, and it's somewhat of an inside joke on my part. I like messing with people from time to time, and this pair of words does that to certain people who are too lazy to look them up in the dictionary. In a weird way, part of the meaning of this word represents a side of my humor, to me it's a joke that many people don't get, yet I find surprisingly funny.

Another meaning of this title is what Aldin first assumed, which is "Sexy Ears." That is infact another one of the meanings. I happen to have both of my ears pierced (I was in a hard rock/metal band for a few years), and my ears are pierced in a rather unique way. It catches peoples attention, they have to try and figure out what's going on, I get a couple questions a week when I go out about my unique piercings.

In college one of my nickname was infact "Sexy Ears" among a small group of freinds, because of my piercings. This is why it cracked me up when I first posted on the board, and Aldin called me "Sexy Ears." Now, I'm not trying to scare anyone, I don't have anything huge or gaudy, it's only something you'd have to look closely at to figure out. Many people never notice them, but some do. I also find it somewhat funny when total strangers ask me "How is that in there? Did that hurt?" I just tell them that it tickled a little bit. The look of confusion is priceless.

The most important meaning of the term auralerogeny is a simple sentence that needs a little explaining. "To exite the ears."

To me, this definition is purely musical. Have you ever listened to a symphony orchestra perform a special piece, and at the climax of the music you get chills? Literally, goosebumps!

This was a phenomenon that I noticed early on, and it has been something that I've always payed attention to. Those moments in music that give me chills, I go back and listen again and pay more attention to what occurred that made my brain subconciously decide that my body would react to a particular moment of music.

How did the composer acheive it? What sort of musical journey must you go on to arrive at that particular point, where what you are listening to makes your body react? I've had chills come from rock music, from opera, from blues, from oldies. Virtually any kind of music, the style doesn't matter. What matters is the fact that what I am hearing has a physical reaction on my body. This phenomenon happens to everyone, I may just be a little more sensitive to it, because I pay attention when it happens, and go back if possible to try and figure out what sequence of emotions, structure, harmony, etc. occured to procure such a profound experience to the listener.

To me, this definition and meaning is the most important. Music that "excites the ears." That is the true meaning of "auralerogeny."

I've been thinking a lot about your quote. I used to do quite a bit of teaching to others in my former assignment at my job. Now I'm in an administrative position. It makes me question why those that administrate "can't teach." In my case, I'm blaming it on the pupils. They just weren't paying attention. They were probably all undressing me with their eyes. Yeah, that's probably it.

I've met a lot of people who were clearly the inspiration for the quote, but there are two ways to promote through the cycle. First is the classic, be not quite bad enough at your job to be fired, but bad enough they want to get rid of you. Putting black marks on a subordinate's record also puts a black mark on your own - you weren't good enough to 'fix' him. So the best solution is to promote the problem out of your area of responsibility. Then the next guy does it, and the next guy, and so on.

The other way is the ironic way. If you are really good at what you do, higher-ups will want you to make other people better at it, so they make you teach. If you turn out to be a good teacher, they reward you by promoting you to a non-teaching position. The classic problem of rising to your level of incompetence - eventually you get promoted to a job you can't do as well and stagnate. The military excels at this... refuse a promotion once and they aren't likely to offer it again, no matter what your reason for declining.
