CAUTION: SPOILERS BELOW
OK, I've searched, and found a few comments here and there on this film, but not really any good discussions of it.
I don't want to get into the quality of the film -- with a 50% tomato rating, it's obviously a polarizing movie, to say the least. You either love it, or you hate it, or you love parts of it and hate parts of it. Throw me into the third group. However, since I saw it last weekend, I've been thinking about it quite a bit, so it was definitely thought-provoking.
We could spend a good long time discussing the theology, the philosophy, and the metaphysics involved. But really, there are just a few things I just can't figure out to my own satisfaction. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
1. The ring. It gets lost twice, but keeps reappearing. Tomas loses it at the Tree, but Tommy has it. Tommy loses it in the surgical prep room, but Tom has it. (I think -- didn't he put it on just before the star explodes?) How do the future versions of this guy keep reacquiring the ring?
2. I've read a few explanations online for the appearance of Tom to the Mayan priest at the "moment of truth", so to speak, but they haven't made sense to me. How does Tomas become Tom, and then revert back to Tomas -- and how does the Mayan see this transformation?
3. Did Tommy really go after Izzy for the walk in the snow, or not? Was future Tom able to change the past? (If so, that may be the answer to question #2.)
4. In my mind, Tommy and Tom are obviously the same person -- Tommy found the tree and kept himself alive for 500 years. But Tomas is different. Is he just a character in Izzy's book, or did the whole Tomas-Isabel story really happen?
OK, that's enough for now. We'll see if this generates discussion, otherwise I guess I'll have to go wade through the horrible imdb boards to talk about this film (ugh.)
