View Full Version : Denver & Colorado Scapers Arise - Welcome All

Looks like we're starting over a bit again. Anyone in the Denver area and beyond (I live in Westminster) whose interested in a game somewhere, sometime, give me a shout at sluggerdrums@yahoo.com.
I need so decent players to play with, but am willing to teach newer players if they are interested.
One of my best friends, down in Colorado Springs, the guy who got me, a general non-gamer since D&D in school back in the 80's, addicted to this game...and then the baaastaad moves back to our home town of Baltimore, MD. Go O's, Blow the sox and yank the yanks! I'm a bit of a sports fan too.
Anyway, I have had few good games since he moved 3 months ago. You know the itch. You can only imagine how much I NEED to play. I get to play with my 6 year old nephew, but he insists on the adult rules, and as much as I love him, playing the adult rules with him becomes tedious.
Anyway, just hope to meet some cool Heroscape fans and cool people in general.
Later,
Jonathan, Jman, Sluggerdrums, Stressman, COA, APS or whatever...just give me a shout.

I'm in no way threatened by your thread :D , just wanted to let you know about the CO players thread that has been started and tell you that that hopefully will be a good place to start up some games. You and I have exchanged emails before, but haven't had the pleasure of actually playing a game together yet - did you get down to Castle Rock for the small tournament that sigmazero13 held at the end of April? I had thought that he mentioned you had.
Anyway, I'm hoping that we all can start holding some games at Valhalla's again, maybe even have a regular game night.
Here's that thread: CO Players (http://heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=93)

Yeah, I went down for that...hoping that someone from denver would show up. But none did. Sigmazero is a good guy and there was another decent player...and I'm not badmouthing here, but a bunch of kids. I kinda yearn for a more adult game...or at least with players of a decent play level in their teens, whatever. There was a guy named Ian there who was 20. I didn't get to play him or sigmazero, unfortunately, the only "real" players. I'd be up for at least sharing the responsibility of getting 8 people together or 3 or whatever. If you want to have a "mini-tourniment", you get 8 people and charge $5 entry. $40 total. Something for 1st place with the money...or a custom figure and card, or heroscape stuff, like the tundra. I have it now....it looks really cool, but as usual, you need at least 2 sets to make any real impact on map designs. The Ice Mountains are not bad.
OR JUST A FRIENDLY GATHERING. Valhalla's is a good place, but it holds a lot of tourniments. A day has to be picked and solid confirmations from at least 4 people...why does it always seem so hard...just 4 people...
Anyway, good to connect with you again.

Hmm, don't know how I missed this thread (well, I do know ;) I usually stick to the Rules threads).
Hopefully we can hook up at Valhalla's again. When I run stuff at the local store, it likely will mostly be kids, as that's the main reason I run 'em down here (the kids just can't get to Valhalla's).

Haven't set up a game for a couple of months, and due to holidays, etc. may not have one for a couple more, but here's a thread (http://heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?p=952#1060) to arrange a game day w/Colorado players (though currently, it's mostly people from Denver area.) Welcome aboard, you two!

I too am looking for someone to play with but with 2 freinds nearby i get to play over the weakend but we like the REALLY BIG games that get up to 1000 1500 points. Eather that or the small games. The med games can get boring and predictable. Anyhow I live down in castle rock and me and my freinds would like to meet you.
P.S. out of the 3 of us i am the player whos played the longest and is most expirienced. 1 of my freinds is one year behind me and the other just started.

So far for the Colorado 'Scapers game days we've met at game shops (Valhalla's in Denver/Wheatridge and Attactix in Aurora) and Sigmazero13 has hosted some at the game shop in Castle Rock. I now bring my son along, who's 8, and there is usually a good mix of ages. Your parents are, of course, welcome to come along (in fact, I would encourage them to do so) to make sure they feel safe about what is going on (and maybe join in for a game or two :) ). There isn't currently a game day set up, but likely after the Holidays there will be another. See above post for the link to the thread.

The avatar looks good Chief.
We had an HS session on Saturday. Got started a bit later than we had scheduled thanks to me, but had a good time anyway. For those that remember them, Mike and his son Zach came over along with another friend of ours. We ended up using the "Overlords of Truth" scenario from HS Codex #3. We decided not to use teams and we changed a couple of the rules. Was a long, fun game. Ultimately came down to me against Mike, but Mike prevailed.
It was good finally getting to play HS again!

Hello? Is this thread on???
I'm over on Green Mountain & am looking for other Denver players to either meet at Valhalla's, or (don't know if they're still there) Skull's Gate. Looking for non-tourny Heroscape gaming for the FUN of it! ;)

Since they live in Arvada, I imagine kpucblek and his son Daniel would be willing to drop by Valhalla's some time. I could be convinced to join, too, depending on what you had planned.
Ah, and tournaments are fun, too. ;) I'm planning a draft pool tournament that I think will really appeal to more casual gamers, too.

My biggest issues with tournys are 1) you usually are going for sheer power -and- 2) if you are knocked out in the beginning you are just sitting and watching others play ... did plenty of this when I ran Heroscape for Tacticon and Genghiscon.
I like to try themed armies, figure out ways to balance the flyers vs the ground units. A friend, LaFleur, also suggested partial cover rules, but I haven't been able to discuss this to any length.
For the cons I tried an obstacle race where your figures respawned typically at the starting hexes and you raced to see who could get all of their figures to the finish line. Engagements and bottlenecks always seemed to make it take longer than the 2 hours we were given.

Hi man, just look for our events in the event section. The way we have been doing tournaments in Colorado isn't like what you discribe. We do a rolling rumble format which is much more casual, you keep playing till time ends and then figure out a record. It allows for games to be finished. I'm glad to see you back on here, it's been awhile, last time we played I was still fairly new to the game myself and there was hardly anyone else in the area that played, now we meet up fairly regularly and have a bunch of fun. I should of told you about or events before but I know you don't like to travel so much. Feel free to send me a message on here, I check Heroscapers at least daily.
I think you might like the idea that Dok has put together for what will probably be the next event. You bring what you want up to a certain point value and you take turns drafting your army from both what you brought and the opponent. It gets away from only useing the best figures and I think will be a lot of fun

Other than the second day of the championship event at GenCon, I've never seen a single elimination Heroscape tournament. Even ones that are done on a round-by-round basis (which we've only done once here in Colorado) are played in a swiss format, where you just keep playing people with similar records all day long.
As for "going for sheer power", if you look at the armies that have been played at Colorado Events (here (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=27311), here (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=28460), here (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=29330), and here (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=30176)), you see a ton of variety in units played. Anyway, as lafleurhero implied, an upcoming tournament is probably going to use a pooled draft format that really opens up the use of any figures you want.

I'll respond there. I'm not sure of other locations that are gamer-friendly. Wizard's Chest would have trouble hosting even a modest-sized event.

I haven't been to Bonnie Brae Hobby Shop since they've moved to South Broadway, but I've heard they have a game room in their basement. Has anyone checked them out to see if there's enough space for Heroscape?

I'm in Colorado Springs and would be interested in meeting up with some Denver folk. I haven't played much in the past two years, especially since moving from TX. I really need to find a steady fix!
