Considering I am using 5.5, I don't see why not!

Try these as the base for the figure:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/3d/MicroHeroTemplates.gif

From there it is sort of like your sister's paper dolls she used to play with ... Just dress 'em up!
Note that Micro-Taelord above uses the figure second in from the right.

This is funny. I was thinking the same thing when I came up with the idea for Micro Heroscape. It's a bit doll-ish, isn't it.

... And, the difference between playing with paper dolls and little 1 1/4" plastic dolls that everyone here plays with is? Very minuscule indeed, and even smaller from the viewpoint of an outsider!

Not sure why I didn't see this sooner...

Regarding my involvement in MicroHeroes... I can't say that I've tried them. Though these kinds of things have been around for a LONG time. Often called Pixel Dolls. There was even one site a while back where you made a character like this, but it was called a Stormtrooper (I believe DarkSpade's old avatar came from that site).

Pixel art is something I admire. I used to be a regular on HabboHotel.com, attracted to it ONLY because it was pixel art. But as far as using it as an artistic outlet... I never really got into it...

And with that, I'm off to check out the sites you listed! *LoL*

EDIT: Okay, one of the All-Star modders here REALLY need to make a custom figure for this guy...

http://jerome.galica.free.fr/cinetv/Dante_2.gif

... better seen here...

http://hh141.hiphip.com/Merchant/0701/0303/dmc2_dante_shop.jpg

... Dante from the 'Devil May Cry' franchise!!

So help me, once I get the Horgle Project released, I'm going to start thinking about a decent custom for this guy...

Glorious stuff! Even though their Frakensteined, I've learned that is a perfectly legit way of creating Micro Heroes! You got the skillz!!!

Here is my first contribution to the effort:

Marro Warrior, 4th Mass, Knight of Weston, Deadeye Dan, Zombie, "unarmed" Drake, "original" Drake, and "new" Drake

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/marro-w.gifhttp://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/4mass.gifhttp://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/weston.gifhttp://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/deadeye.gifhttp://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/moran.gifhttp://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/drake.gifhttp://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/drake2.gifhttp://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/drake-new.gif

Deadeye, the zombie and the minutemen were easy to frankenstein, but Marro, Weston and Drake required a lot of original work. Feel free to post these anywhere you want, or use them as avatars or in your sig or whatever. Also feel free to edit them, to add detail or just give them different faces o match the different units.

If anyone else is working on these, could you let me know which ones, so I don't do the same ones? I avoided Drake and Raelin for this reason, though I think they'd be relatively easy to do.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I'm glad to know somebody likes them.

As far as what bases I used, I actually didn't start many of them "naked." I mainly looked for other heroes with the kind of uniforms I needed, and started from there. Deadeye Dan was easy, because I actually took a Clint Eastwood micro and messed around with him, changed his color and gave him a new face, that looked more like how I picture Deadeye. The Knight of Weston was based on the DC character Atomic Knight. However, he was heavily modified with a lot of original work, and he was by far the hardest (believe it or not, there aren't many pre-existing armored knights to work with). For Drake I used the body of an obscure DC character called GI Robot, and again, I modified him quite a bit and re-colord the uniform to be a closer match with the actual figure. The Marro and Zombie started out with just "naked" bodies and skulls for heads. Then I changed their basic color scheme and modified them with original work. They weren't that hard to do, just a little time consuming. I use Adobe Elements 2 which is extremely versatile, but I think you can do most of the stuff I did with some of the shareware programs available on the net.

My next projects (when I have time) will probably be Agent Carr, Shotgun Sullivan/Wyatt Earp, and the two male Krav Agents. Those guys should all be easy (the Krav agents are just guys in suits). I have some ideas for Raelin, and I would like to get to her, but she is a much more distinct character, with a lot of unique little parts, so I will have to spend a little more time on her.

Anyone else plan to do any? Hex...have you had any luck with this stuff?

Malechi

argos, i use MS paint. it works fine and if you know all the tricks to using it you can do a lot more than what is expected. also i want to do keemoshi, can I use your marro as a base?

ArgosCap
March 14th, 2007, 04:50 AM
Yes, of course! Anyone may feel free to edit or modify my micros in any way they like (I mean if you can do something cool with them, more power to you). I would LOVE to see Kee-Mo-Shi!!!! She would be scary and cool! I was thinking of using the base for Ne-Gok-Sa, but he is another guy that could take a while to get right.

I imagine MS Paint is a little harder to use, but, yes it can be pretty versatile, especially when it comes to gifs. I believe it allows you to do pixel by pixel stuff, which is really what you need when you're designing new details on the micros.

brickman1444
March 14th, 2007, 08:24 AM
yes it does let you do pixel by pixel and there are a lot of tricks people don't know like: if you want all the black in an area to be white, make black the foreground and white the backround and go over the area with the eraser while holding the RIGHT mouse button. this will not make all the colors in the area white, just black.

Anybody want to help TB with some Micro Heroes tips?
TB, how are you saving your image? Vexen appears blurred to me.
I know Micro Heroes are usually very crisp in their pixelation.
And my only other critique would be to see some shading on the wings and body.

I still need to attempt a MH and post it here....

sir denrick, agent carr and concan are done. i threw in the new shield for those who want to use it. the other shield looked to long and unsymmetrical. conacan wasn't really that hard. the hardest part was remaking the side that was covered by the shield. agent carr was based on, you guessed it, morpheus.

Dude! Brickman, you rock! I especially like your Carr! He looks dead-on. I like the face on Concan, but I think he might be better with slightly smaller wings. Although, it's very dramatic looking with the big ones.

Does Concan remind anyone else of an Arcangel? I can't help but think of the angel Michael every time I see the fig.

Anyway, great work Brick!

OK, so after seeing this thread, I decided to make some for myself! I only have 1 right now, and he's just a test, no extra stuff, just coloring the template.

I have 1 question: The template's background is black when copied into paint? Why is this, and how do I fix it while keeping it looking good? When I tried just using the paint bucket, it completely killed it.

ArgosCap

Um...I tried playing with paint to see if I could answer your question. However, all the characters I bring up have a white background.

My best guess is that whoever created this particular template, chose to use black as the transparent color in the background. I don't know why they'd do this, since the outline is probably black too.

My best suggestion would be to try using a different template? If it happens with all templates, then maybe that is the default background your paint program is set to give something that has a clear background, in which case, you need to figure out how to change the default setting.

See if that helps. Brickman, you know more about Paint then I do.

ok, so when you are looking at the original template on the net or wherever you got it from. you hit print screen sysrq to take a screenshot of it. then paste that into paint then get rid of the stuff you dont want, change the backround to white and edit away!

I'm here, I'm here. Sorry to keep you waiting Brickman.

Here are a few more. The Krav agents, and a generic Grut Orc template. I haven't had time to find all the various accessories that the various gruts wear. However, I figured that if I designed the head, and gave some references for the basic color scheme, some of you other artists could help me put the rest together. I put a brass colored bracer on one arm, to help anyone who needs a color reference for any additional armor that you might want to give these guys. I can post an arsenal of suitable weapons and armor that I have found so far, if you'd like me to.

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/krav1.gifhttp://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/krav2.gifhttp://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/grut.gif

I didn't give the Krav agents uniform suits. I figure these guys are essentially independant professionals who go to the Men's Warehouse and buy their own suits. I think the ones I gave them look close to the actual figures.

I know what you mean Brickman. Not much news lately.

To answer your question, the Krav agents are actually a combination of Agent Smith from Matrix, Will Smith's character from Men in Black, some generic guys in suits and some custom design. I know it sounds complicated for a couple of guys in suits, but I wanted to get the look right, and make them distinct. White Krav has Agent has Smith's hair and suit jacket, a custom face, glasses and tie, and a generic guy's pants. Black Krav has Will Smith's head and torso. I darkened his complexion a little, and gave him the arms and legs of a generic guy in a suit. Then I put Carr's sunglasses over his Ray Bans. I'm guessing you desinged those Briackman, because I haven't seen them before. The Grut is mostly heavy modifications of existing templates. His leg wraps are modified from Raiden of Mortal Kombat, and his loin cloth is modified from Scorpion of Mortal Kombat. Do you think a Grut Orc would ever be invited to the Outworld tournament?

So, here are two more contributions. Shotgun Sullivan and some more Grut weapons. Shotgun Sullivan (below) is pretty much original based on heavily modified bits and pieces from generic templates. Those shields were the hardest thing to make. They were originally Captain America shields when I started, but I only used the outline of thier shape.

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/shotgun.gifhttp://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/orc-shield.gif

You mean they were a circle?

Um...well, yes. But more importantly, it was a circle that was scaled correctly for micro heroes. I also used the outer ring of shading.

Here are two more. The Anubian Wolf, based on a heavily modified version of the Van Helsing Werewolf (the muscles are really frankenstined). Then, we have a Warrior of Ashra. She is pieced together from modified generic templates and includes some original work. Her boots and legs are modified from the Sorceress of MOTU.

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/anubian.gifhttp://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/ashraw.gif

As always feel free to use them anywhere. I'm slowly getting around to more. I may update the Knight of Weston, Denrick and Concan soon, to give them a few more details from the figs (and a transparent background). I'm also thinking about the Nakitas, Microcorps, Raelin, and some Grut variations. Those will be the easiest to get to, since anyone else is going to require a lot of original work.

Wow, love it Brickman!!! I especially like the modification on the sword. It looks perfect, all jagged and nasty. Very wicked! I think you did a good job with the shoulder pads too.

I think it looks good, and I'm not sure what seems off to you. If you can think of anything, let me know, and I'll try to help you perfect any details. The only thing I can think of is that these guys may be a little too bright and saturated. I think of Gruts skulking around in dirt, and smoke and mud and ash, and darkness. Maybe we need to "dirty" them up a little. That's the only thing I can think of. Your details seem to match the figs pretty well. I was going to suggest a bracer on his arm, but I see the particular figure that you were modeling doesn't have one. Maybe you need to give him an open mouth with nasty, ugly teeth? Maybe some little dents in the shoulder pads (darker brass), and a little shine on top of the pads (lighter brass)? I think those details might liven him up a little. I might add some detail to that shield too.

By the way, I'm trying to create a better template of the spear orcs. I realized that arm I gave doesn't match up with the normal orc template real well, so I'll try to fix that soon. I also think I have an idea for that crazy pointed helmet that that one orc wears.

The coloring to the shoulder pads was an excellent touch the highlights bring it together nicely. I have a slight problem with the mouth as the angle seems a bit sharp without the jaw aligning to it. Perhaps cutting back on the angle slightly ...

I didn't take the time to download the image and open it in Photoshop. Instead I copied the image and opened a new document in Photoshop and pasted the image into the document. When I did that, it copied the web image not the actual image. If I had downloaded your image the colors would have stayed true. However, since I was simply attempting to show what I meant and not trying to take your image as my own, I didn't worry too much about color!

Brickman! I LOVE the angled mouth and bigger, bolder teeth. He looks much more in character like that. Dumb and vicious! I really like it.

Okay, so, as I said, I've been updating the knights a bit. I spent a massive amount of time creating that first Knight of Weston, so I didn't have time to pay attention to ALL the details of the original figure. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so I wanted to go back and update him, for my own sanity.

While I was at it, I figured I would create or update all the characters with the same armor. Brickman, I know that Malechi was careful not to take your work as his own with a minor variation, and I felt bad working on Denrick, but I wanted him to match the other knights. I hope you don't mind me updating him.

As you can see, I couldn't decide which shield I liked better. The big lop-sided one is kinda cool, because the symbol is bigger and it looks kind of battle-ready. But, I really like Brickman's more symetrical design, which is much more tidy looking, and technically, more accurate to the shape of the shields that the figures carry. So, I did the only logical thing, and created variations, utilizing both shields.

Hex, I know you're kinda breaking these guys up by creator on the first page, but I think any variation of Denrick should be attributed to Brickman, if that's okay with him. I know it might get funny making calls like that when we're giving it the old team effort, but Brick had the initiative on Denrick. I just update the armor. As far as my orginial Knight of Weston, I think we should just take him off of Page 1, and replace him with these new variations. Eventually, I will try to give everyone transparent backgrounds, because I think they look better. What do you think about that?

Anyway, here you go. Sir Hawthorne is the only new character.

Now, here are some orc variations. I've got an orc archer and some heavy grut templates. Notice the newer, meaner faces. I thought we could use a little more variation in ears, face, etc.

Here is my Roman Legionnaire / basic roman:

http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l169/brickman144/custom%20heroscape/romanbase.png

I used parts of the knights of Weston for the base and then added a man-skirt and the brown details. then the helmet, which was completely custom, the sheath and lastly the shield.

Undeadcam,
Usually it's easiest to get a Photobucket account, or something similar and then put the link to the pic in your post. It took me a long time to figure out too, because I wasn't smart enough to ask.

Fuzzie Fuzz,
Thank you! I am so glad you have chosen to help us out with our efforts! Please feel free to edit any of our characters in any way you wish. You can use them for scrap in a new character, or edit details as you like! By the way, if you know how to recolor characters, then half the battle is done for you. The next step, is cutting and pasting parts of different characters. Then the ultimate step is when you start working up the nerve to zoom in and edit the details. It's actually much easier to do this than you think. There are only so many pixels in a given space, so you don't half to be as acurate as you would with normal drawing. Just shade your lines, and they usually look pretty good! I can't wait to see Ne-Gok-Sa and the ninjas!!!

Brickman,
Hahaha...you made me laugh Brickman. You used a Knight of Weston as the base for that Roman? Good heavens, why? There is nothing recognizable about any knight in your piece, except maybe the sword. Looking at it, it seems to me, that your Roman is at least 70% original custom art. And it is BEAUTIFUL. You did a great job with the helmet and the shiled. Love it!

Now, here are all four female agents. I didn't give the Nankitas guns, because they really don't need them. Think about it. Three beautiful women in a war being fought, mainly my males. Their beauty is far more dangerous than any firearm. The Krav agent needs them though, because she just looks sexy with two big hand cannons. I also gave the Krav boys some guns, but theirs are not as big as hers.

Hahaha....that is hilarious Mal! You're right, I certainly had plenty of creative license in creating their faces. Those Nakitas are probably the worst sculpts in the game. Even Heroclix look better, and that's kinda sad. But, I like the fact that they put a few more female characters in the game.

My first thoughts when I saw these Micros was that they remind me a lot of an old program I used to have called FKiss, which is basically a "paper-doll" program that different people have used to create everything from cyborgs to more "adult" things.

I never used it enough to learn how to make the files for it, but I could see some awesome stuff using these guys. With FKiss (or whatever version there is of it now) you could actually put all the pieces of whatever on separate tabs from the one with your character and then create interactive animated backgrounds, etc. You could also animate the pieces as well so for example when you click on their gun, it fires, or if you click on their arm they would swing their sword and make a war face or whatever.

I'm really tempted to go back to that program now and see if I can import some of these MicroHeroes into it, but my artistic abilities would leave much to be desired... and someone like Malechi would probably figure out how to make the files about 20 times faster than I ever could.

Anyone else ever used that program or something similar?

Fuzzie Fuzz

Hyperactive,
Never heard of that program you're talking about. With or without software, animating these guys would require drawing each frame of the animation, which could take some time. If you have the body stay still, and you have some templates for a swinging sword or gun draw, then it would be a faster process, but I would rather do more characters than spend the time trying to animate one. I might try it eventually.

Fuzzie Fuzz,
Good work with the ninja. I think you're getting the hang of how to edit these things. But um...why does he have big bold black nipples? I would just erase those altogether. I think he should probably be a lot darker too. Gray is a good way to mimic black, but you have to use a much darker gray. He almost looks silver. Also, save these things as .gif files.

I've been working on some more. If you do a refresh on the first post, you'll see that I gave several characters updates. Most recently, I gave Deadeye Dan his special rifle. I almost have the Micro-Corps Agents almost finished, so I'll post those soon.

I have a favor to ask. I am posting some unfinished prototypes of Tornak and a Venoc Viper. The thing is, I don't own Tornak or any of the Vipers, so I was only using Internet images, and those are not good enough to realy see the details. I tried to finish what details I could get a feel for, but I'm not really sure how these things are supposed to look. So I am giving you what I have, and maybe someone else can finish them?

The Viper needs his mouth fixed. I'm not sure how to make a Venoc mouth. I'm also unsure what their weapons and armor are supposed to look like. Once we have this base complete though, it should make it easy to do variations such as The Venoc Warlord and Elite Onyx Vipers.

Tornak is mostly done, but I don't know what his armor is supposed to look like. Of course, you can't see him very well behind his raptor anyway, but I like getting the details right. I know he is supposed to have a pointy helmet of some kind, but I can't really make out the details. If someone wants to make his helmet and armor, I'll put it on him (I know that can be a pain).

Anyway, feel free to play with them and see what you can come up with. I'm working on other stuff.

Tips for the Venoc:
The jaw needs to be longer and more pronounced, more like a dragon's than a lizard's, with a full set of long sharp teeth.
The Venoc's arms have bony plates extending from them, one on the upper, and one on the lower. Their hands have three(?) "fingers" gripping a pair of talons (Raptorian trophies) also.

Other than that, you did pretty well considering you don't have the actual figures.
For a better view of the shape and detail of the Venocs, try going here http://www.hasbro.com/heroscape/default.cfm?page=character-new&char_id=5
then you can click on each of the three sculpts and view them from various angles using the little arrow buttons to rotate the figures.

Hope that helps.

Brickman!!! Holy Cow, you are awesome!!! That shield freaking rocks! I don't know how you came up with that so fast! Your Tornak looks great!

Mal, I really like the improvements to the raptor. He's much more menacing! I'm not sure about the head-on spear though. I's a little hard to make out, but it's a great alt version, for people who prefer a more "action-like" pose.

Here are some more of mine: the Micro Corps Agents and two versions of the Shades of Bleakwood. One with a "realistic" head and one with a "distorted "Ghostface" head, which is more like the figs. They are definitely ready to possess some dim-witted do-gooders!

Malechi,. I love the new raptor! The shading definitely puts it in a more stereotypical hunched over raptor pose.

Argos, for the shield I just used the shield you made that was head on, changed most of it to steel, added some bronze and then added the nub in the center.

PS the microcorp and shades rock!

I fully agree about the spear. I just wanted it more like the actual figure. Perhaps if the arm and tip were dropped with the back end tilted up and out ... I mean, how do you draw a charging lance in a front view? •

Love these all!

As far as how to make a charging lance from a front view... Use the guide from Marcus' sword angle.

Bring the spear tip down right, toward Dino's leg, **** out the arm, elbow pointed out, and bring the back part of the shaft out from behind the arm.

Basically your angle is \, but a litlte steeper.

Oh, and it's not really a lance, he has a Halberd. Very close to a European Knight or German Halberd Design, although the spear point in front of the blade is a little more extended out on the shaft.

The ninja looks a lot better. I might still go a shade or two darker for the black uniform. If you look at my female Krav agent, or the boots on the Microcrops agents, they are all gray....just really, really dark gray, so that it looks black. Yes, some of the muscles will be less noticeable with darker colors, but your eyes will still register them enough to know that the guy in the suit is ripped, and that is what you want..to create a subtle illusion. But overall he looks good. Big improvement. Can't wait to see your take on Ne-Gok-Sa.

Hex,
Love your sig! That is freaking awesome! I am going to try to update those vipers though eventually...make them look a little more like the figures if I can, although if anyone else wants to jump in there, I'd be fine with that, since, like I said i don't own any of the viper figs.

Brickman,
LOVE the Roman Archer! Great work! I may just use that "chain mail "skirt" you made for some vikings eventually, although I think I am going to try a few of the kyrie next (Kelda, Raelin, The Imperium, and Kiova).

Chimpy,
Good work. I like your edits. Although I think the fin on the Marrow needs to be bigger. I would think of it like the hood of a cobra, something that is meant to make the drone look bigger and badder than it actually is. Right now, it looks kinda puny.

Fuzzy,
I think we all appreciate your start on the ninja, and any way you want to make a character look is just fine. This is ART after all, and art is about interpretation and personal persepctive. But keep in mind that it's not a bad thing if someone wants to add to what you've done. In fact, you might consider it a compliment that they choose to build on your work. All of us, myself included, are using bits and pieces of micro figs that were designed by some other fabulous artists. I choose pieces that look cool, and try to build on them, to get what I want. So, with the ninja, you created the character as you saw him, and Chimpy thought you did a good job, but he wanted to add a few details and make him look a little closer to the figure. I think you both did a good job.

So, here's Mimring!

Hmm...well, I'm trying to do the ones that are realtively simple. However, these two did not turn out to be as simple as I thought. Kelda and the Zettian Guard are almost totally custom. I used a generic face and body for Kelda, but just about everything else is custom. The wings were by far the hardest thing I've done, but I figured it would be worth it, since I could use a variation of them for Raelin later (Raelin, Kiova and the Imperium should be next). The Zettian is mostly custom, although it's arms and feet are adapted from Marvel's "Orphan-Maker." Enjoy!

Well, even though I can't draw, and very little artistic talent, I am OK at altering existing pics, so I thought I'd give this a try. I've been reading since this thread started and just had to contribute something, so I decided to try my hand with the Elite Onyx Vipers.

I started by going to that link somebody posted above, and took the head off of "The Boogieman". I first recolored it, then reshaped his nose, then worked on his eyes a bit, then tried adding the ridge onto his noggin. Here's the result. I'm posting the steps because I'd like to know where I went wrong, or right, in the process. ALL criticism is welcome, please. Let me know what you think. If this turns out alright, I'll either swap it for the head on the other vipers posted and recolor the body, or start from scratch using an altered version of "Sarigar" from the above link (under Alien Legion) changing the blue highlights to grey, and find some good arms to alter then add the hands and talons from scratch as well. Again, let me know what you think...

Wow, lots of activity here! It's great to see so many people entering the fray!

Fuzzie,
Good job on Ne-Gok-Sa. You obviously had to create some custom weapons and equipment for him, which isn't easy to do (in fact, that's the big reason I didn't tackle him right away). The shoulder plates actually don't look that bad, ecept maybe the bottom one needs to be flipped over and put on top (the easiest way to fix it would be to give the top shoulder plate a little more of a cresta at the top). Also, I like his "hand blade," but it gets a little narrow at the top, because it tapers into the marrow's narrow wrist. If you look at the Ne-Gok-Sa figure, his wrist actually broadens out where it meets the blade. The blade itself is quite massive, like a big fat guilotine just waiting to lop some heads.

By the way, if you can, save these things as .gif files, like your original ninja. Png works, but instead of the file being 4kb, it becomes 16kb. Jpeg format is for photos. When something is saved in jpeg format, it condenses the pixels in the file, which is why the picture gets all spotty. If you save your photos over and over, you will notice them getting ugly spots like that too. Gif is a format that preserves pixels as they are for simple illustrations like these micro heroes. It has specific web applications too, because the backgrounds can be made transparent on web pages.

XSI,
Love the monks. They look great! But, the template you are using is significantly bigger than the ones we are using for the other micro heroes. These guys would be about 8 feet tall. Although, now that I think about it, that is pretty cool. They could be new heroes. Shaolin monks who have returned from Shangri-La, swelling with massive amount of chi energy, which they can direct at their enemies in the form of lighting bolts and fireballs. Hmmm...maybe I should start a new comic..."The Giant Teenage Fighting Monks."

Hyperactive,
What do you mean you aren't artistic? Could have fooled me with these viper heads! I'm glad you posted the stages of your work, because that can really be interesting to look at, and might also be helpful for those who are trying to figure out how to do these. By the way, I don't know if anyone noticed on the first post, but I updated my venoc prototype with three fingers and a more accurate head. In fact, my head actually looks a lot like yours Hyper. I like your teeth a little better, although I do think the heads are a little small. Like I said, i don't own any of the figs, but from the pics I've seen, the heads of the vipers are actually pretty big in relation to their body. Besides that though, I think you did a great job. You may not have a steady hand for drawing, but you seem quite capable of putting something together on the computer. Everyone has their strengths!

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/venoc-proto.gif

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/195/473077218_2ca2f931b7_o.png

Hit "refresh" if you're still seeing the old viper. Now that these guys are a little more accurate, please feel free to give them weapons, and make vipers variations such as the Warlord and Scouts. Change their color to dark green/gray, and you should have some onyx vipers as well (I'd do it myself, but I've never even seen a pic of the onyx vipers, so I don't know what their exact color scheme is).

Brickman,
I like these templates for Krug. I was going to do him, until I looked at the figure and realized how much custom work would have to go into it. Whoever does him though, should keep one thing in mind. Krug doesn't have washboard abs like these templates. He's got a big round belly, like Shrek, from eating too many knights and elves and not getting enough exercise killing them.

Alright, so with all that said, here is the long-awaited Raelin! She was by far, the hardest micro I've done. Almost everything about her is custom (except the helmet wings, which are from Thor). She was a pain to do, but it is satisfying to finally hae one of the main characters done. Hope she was worth the wait!

As always, feel free to edit or post where you like.

Thanks for the help, ArgosCap. I went ahead and finished (almost) the Elite Onyx using your venoc. I resized my head, cleaned it up a little (since resizing always screws up small details) to maintain the highlights, then transposed it onto your body. After recoloring (using the tedious "fill" method since I don't know how to alter existing colors in Paint), making several attempts at creating the Raptorian Talons, then finally redoing his teeth a little and adding his ARMor plates, I think he looks alright.

Anyone else up for the challenge of making talons for the Venocs/EOV? I tried several ways and couldn't get them to look right.

Anyways, here it is, my first finished (almost) Micro Hero fig...

http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10346/normal_krug.PNG

Sorry its a bit unclear, I didn't realize that making it a JPG would mess it up. I'm going to stick with PNG from now on. As far as the body goes, i couldn't get the belly to look right, and this whole thing was custom, so it took a really long time, and i just stuck with the abs. Maybe Krug got drafted more in combat and got in shape!

=)

Sloth, my advice would be to make the claws silver, like a weapon, give them highlights. If I get some time I might see what I can do with it, but looks great!!

First of all, Jonathan, ROCK ON!!! Your Minion looks awesome. The only thing that might be better is if you spread his wings out, so he looks more intimidating. I've never seen the wings folded back like that. Did you make those wings? There are acutally quite a few "bat wing" templates out there that you can scalp off of other characters, but they are in full spread. I think Mal made his own wings for Taelord, 'cause I haven't seen the like elsewhere.

By the way guys, I'm not sure if you know about this site, but this is where I find all the best templates (there are tons of them on this site):

http://foxgnaws.com/archive/

There is also a search feature, that allows you to find any character in seconds.

A while back, someone asked me if I could do Charos. I probably won't get to him for a while. The reason I did Mimring is because I found this template on that site:

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/dragon-temp.gifhttp://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/dragon-template2.gif

As you can see, it already looked quite a bit like Mimring (although I still spent a few hours modifying him). I don't think this particular template would really work for Charos. It doesn't really look like him. HOWEVER, if someone wanted to try to make Nilfheim with this, I think that would work. He looks pretty close to the template. You just need to recolor him, remove his scales and maybe tweak his horns and face a bit.

Also, if any of you new guys haven't seen my orc templates, and you're looking for another project, please put together some Orc variations. The templates are practically naked, and nobody wants to see orc nipples, any more than ninja nipples. When you customize these, you can represent one of the existing figs, or make your own new, crazy, bad-to-the-bone grut freak. They've gotten kinda buried on here, so here they are again:

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/grut-spear2.gifhttp://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/grut.gifhttp://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/grut-spear.gif

Here are some examples of what you can do with these templates. These were done by me and Brickman:

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/grut-archer.gifhttp://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/bladegrut-bm1444.gif

Finally, Hyperactive...
Sorry I read your plea to Malechi, but didn't respond before he did. I also tried to fill your request for the Viper talons. I'm not sure if this is what they're supposed to look like, but what do you think?

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/venoc.gif

I added your arm things to my viper, if that's okay with you.

Alright, alright, I know what you're thinking. ArgosCap...where's the new stuff.

Don't worry about it. I got you covered. Check back tomorrow night, because I've got a ton of super-cool stuff on the way (well, I think it's super cool anyway). I've got a few surprises that you probably wouldn't think of.

Well, I liked Malechi's "blade style" talons, but Argos' do look a bit more like the figure, so I went with a modification of his by beefing 'em up a tiny bit and lightening the shading to more of an ivory-ish color. I'm still not completely happy with my EOV, but that's probably just because I'm a horrible perfectionist when it comes to my own work.

Overall, I'm satisfied enough with it to call it finished. So, here he is, the completed Elite Onyx Viper now WITH bananas!!!

Okay guys, I decided to go a slightly different tract with some of these new ones. I did the characters as they appear in the Heroscape comics by DC. First up, of course, is evil Raelin. She is a bad, bad naughty girl. Then we have Shotgun Sullivan and Kee-Mo-Shi as they appear both in the DC Comic and in the animated short "The Will of Kee-Mo-Shi."

Well, I decided to go for good ol' Deathwalker 9000 for my next attempt. After only an hour-and-a-half of work  I have now completed his... lower legs. :(

With a little luck I should be able to have the rest of him done by... two weeks from Wednesday! :P

Well, that's what I get for trying to do an entire figure from scratch using Paint. :frustrated:

At this point I'd settle for just getting his proportions right so I don't end up re-doing half of him over again.

ArgosCap
April 28th, 2007, 12:12 AM
Hyperactive,
Wow, I can't wait to see your Deathwalker. When I did the Zettian Guard, I looked at Deathwalker to see how how he would be to put together from scratch. My conclusion was....maybe later. Much later. He's got a lot of little details, and I totally understand what you must be going through trying to get him right. For scale, I would give yourself a nice big work space and maybe even make a little bit of a "grid" or at least, draw some lines, as to what level everything should be at (where should his foot end, where should his leg end, where should his head be). Then just fill in the stuff inside the lines of that basic grid.

The hard thing about robotic characters is that they have a lot of details. The easy part is that they are very symetrical, and have a lot of simple geometric shapes.

One more tip for deathwalker: because he is symetrical, don't do both halfs of him, because you'll wind up doing everything twice. Just make one half of him. Then copy the half you made, resize your workspace to accomodate the other half, paste the other half onto that workspace and then flip it around and connect it to the original half. I'm not 100 percent sure you can do that in Paint, but if you can't, draw half of D9000 and post him, and I will do it for you, and then I will post your perfectly symetrical outline, so you can finish. It's a big project, so I'm more than happy to help. The only thing that isn't symetrical on D9000 is his guns, but you can draw those in, once you have the symetrical outline of the rest of his body. Just a suggestion to help save you some time.

Anyway, here are the Einar Imperium. I've been promising them for a few days, so I finally got them done.

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/imperium01.gifhttp://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/imperium02.gifhttp://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/imperium03.gifhttp://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/imp-template.gif

Fuzz,
Can't wait to see Morsbane.

XSI,
Can't wait to see Kaemon Awa.

Chimpy,
Great work on the marro headcrest! Can't wait to see gruts and primordians. There are a couple of "ape" templates on-line, but I think the one fuzzie gave you looks pretty close. I was actually trying to figure these guys out myself, but they are another set of figs I don't own. I did see that several of them have a cybernetic eye. Go to Ze Ball's library, look under video games - mortal kombat. Steal the eye from the character Kano. It looks just like the one on the figs.

Jonathan,
Wow! You drew that stuff by hand? Great work! I take it you did those wings from scratch too? You're quite a talent with this stuff.

Brickman,
I haven't played with paint enough to know its full capabilities. I usually work on these in photoshop. It's not that I can do anything different than I could in paint, with this kind of art, but there are some shortcuts in photoshop that make the job a little easier. However, for all of photoshop's abilities, I still use paint for any custom objects that I need to make, because photoshop doesn't have little things like the curvy line maker, and the instant circle/elipse maker. There are ways to get similar results, but photoshop shades things automatically, and it doesn't always look right for these types of gifs. It has these thoughtful automagic features because oddly enough photoshop is meant for photos.

Now here is the big surprise I was telling you about. The Kyrie generals themselves! Jandar and Utgar. Jandar's appearance is modeled mainly after his appearance in the DC comic. I believe that image is based on the model they created for the cartoon commercials. There are some minor differences between Jandar's look in the cartoon and comic, and eventually, I may do a "cartoon" variation. However, the biggest difference is that the comic version is more detailed. For Utgar, I used his look from both the cartoon commercial and the sketch of him on the map of Valhalla. His top half is based on the cartoon, because it is too hard to make out in the sketch (however the Utgar symbol on his chest was only visible in the sketch). Utgar's bottom half is pretty consistent in the sketch and in the cartoon, however his loin cloth is based on the sketch (it appears to be more shredded in the cartoon, but it's a little hard to make out). The coloring is obviously based on the cartoon.

Then there is the cartoon version of Dark Raelin from the "Will of Kee-Mo-Shi" cartoon. I think the comic book artist took the basic design from the cartoon and made it a little cooler looking for the comic. Since, I already did the comic version, this variation wasn't too hard. Anyway, here ya go:

Chimpy,
Great work on the marro headcrest! It looks just like the one on the figs.

or just use the eye from one of these guys:

Yeah! The caption at the bottom advertises for the competition and the link via the picture is the direct route to find it! It's one big link.
If I have the character allotment (which I didn't think I had), I'll make two separate links for each Micro-based thread.

I don't know if this will help any of the artists here, but I thought I would share some of the "secrets" of my process here. I saved quite a few of my steps on Utgar (who was a fairly substantial project), and I thought you might like to see what I did to create him.

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/utgar-steps.gif

1. I knew that the character Sagat, from Streetfighter had an unusually large base model. I wanted Jandar to be big, and muscular. I wanted Utgar to also be large and powerful looking, but maybe a little taller and more thin than Jandar, as if his powerful frame were naural and not the result of intense discipline. Anyway, Sagat was the right model, but I wasn't sure where I could find that base model, so I designed Utgar's uniform right over Sagat's body. Notice that I actually drew a reference mark, to show me where "halfway" was, so I would only have to draw the clothes on one half of his body. I used the tools in paint to draw the reference lines, because it is easier to do than in photoshop. I used red-lines on Sagat's lower half, to distinguish them fromthe balck lines on his body. When I started the next step, I turned these lines bright green, and then black (using a non-contiguous fill).

2. I fond the model that Sagat was built on.

3. I cropped Sagat in half, and erased everything I didn't want (everything outside the the bright green reference lines, except for Sagat's hand wraps. If you look at the sketch of Utgar, he appears to have similar hand wraps. The I pasted everything that was left onto the naked model. Then pasted it again, and flipped it horizonatally, so that the clothes were symetrical on both sides. The I started filling in the colors with paint fill. Using a non-contiguous fill, I didn't have to erase the features from Sagat that were still inside the reference lines (for example his knee cap and blue shorts). I just filled those things in with gray. After that, I adjusted the reference lines on his hat a bit too with a pencil tool.

4. Originally, I thoughts the horns on the helmet were ivory colored horns, until I went back and checked the cartoon. I also filled in the uncolored dots that were left alongs the edges, and filled in the chest a little with gray, as a visual reference for what I was going to do next. I also gave him Sagat's frowning mouth which was perfect. It really matched the cartoon appearance.

5. I readjusted the helmet so it wasn't quite so freakishly tall (using cut and paste), and used the mask of another helmet to complete the look. Then I created one of his bracers, and gave him the shoulder pads I created for Jandar (I figure they probably shop at the same blacksmith's). The I filled in the colors, based on the coloring of the figure in the cartoon.

6. I copied his right arm and pasted it onto his left arm. The result: instant symetrical bracers. Then I colored in his feet, so he wouldn't go barefoot. Then, I added the Utgar symbol to his chest.

7. Made some minor adjustments, such as evening out the slope of his helmet point, which had become slightly messed up from all my previous work on the helmet. Looked for minor flaws to change.

8. Found a suitable wing for the lord of dark Kyrie.

9. Use the darkest red on his body for the main color of the inner wing, and the darkes gray of his armor for the outer wing. There are also some hints of purple in the outer wing, because his wing looked slightly purple in the cartoon. I changed the claw at the top of the wing to resemble the one in the sketch. THEN, I added the wings onto utgar, which was fascilitated by Photoshop's Layers. After that I may have looked him over nd made minor adjustments, but I don't remember anything substntial.

Each of these steps took about 15-45 minutes. I usually saved each step, so I could walk away from the project for a while, and came back to it later. I find walking away from a project can be helpful. Keeps you from getting burned out on it.

Well, I managed to get some more of the ol' Deathwalker done, and I probably won't have time to finish him this weekend so here's a little teaser of what I have done so far...
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/210/484565592_b9f4df2e46_o.jpg

I'd say he's about 40% done since his top half is actually bigger than his lower half. Although, his guns are going to make up a large chunk of that. If I had some guns to modify instead of making them from scratch I'd be closer to 60% done. Hey Argos, or brickman, or anyone else who's into these Micros. If you come across any guns that somewhat resemble DW9K's let me know, alright? I've done a little looking but no luck.

Oh yeah, and let me know how these look so far. I've been having a lot of trouble with contrast and shading. It always looks like I'm overdoing it, or underdoing it.

I stole the pallette from the Zettian (so they would look they belong together when it's done) but other than that I'm just building this guy from the ground up (literally) pixel by pixel. Any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hyperactive,

The legs look awesome man! Great attention to detail. Good thinking on using the Zettian palette. Don't stress too much over the shading. Usually, I just shade enough to smooth out any hard black lines, so it looks less pixely and flat. I think you're doing fine though.

I've seen lots of chain guns around, like the ones I used for the Zettian and the Penguine. However, DW9K's weapons are a little bigger than average. If you'd like, I'd be happy to make the guns. Those parts are kind of easy compared to the rest of him. Would you like the guns facing out like my Zettian, angled like the figure, or more of a "straight-on" look? I'll build them any way you like, and hopefully I'll get the scale right for the upper body you're building.

So far you're stuff looks great. Just keep in mind my suggestion of only building the right half or left half and then duplicating it and flipping it around for easy symmetry. That's my best tip.

Those deathwalker legs are sweet! my advice for the top is to start with simple shapes like lines, squares and circles and then add more and more detail to them. I also like the uniformity of the zettian and deathwalker pallets.

Well, by shading, I meant just getting to where it doesn't look blocky or flat, or too soft. After all, without the right shading, it's impossible to tell a a circle from a sphere, or a box from a cylinder. My first two attempts at shading schemes made him either look like he was made of angled plating, or made him look all distorted. I'm glad I figured out the coloring scheme I've got now, but I might still change it some if I figure out a better way, but then it probably would lose it's Micro Hero styling and be TOO 3-dimensional.

As far as weapons go, I'm planning on having his right gun (left as viewed) point straight forward, and have his other one basically the same as his figure, but without the forward tilt. (so basically, like this / ). It shouldn't be too hard to find a good model for the first one. If I could find a pixel art of an apache helicopter or something like that (do you know any Micro Hero sites with Mechs?) that would paste right on. The other one could probably be made by chopping together a flamethrower and a chain gun.

Yeah, I've been using the flip method, but I've still been drawing both sides of most of it because I make the left and right different, then pick the one that looks better and flip it onto the other side. The easy parts (like toes and knees), though, I just drew in on one side and copied. Being anal is a pain in the butt. :P

Malechi, coming from you I'll take that as a compliment! ;)

I saw that several people voted for Retiarius for the micro hero contest. Well, since he didn't get voted in, and since he was pretty easy to do, and people wanted to see him, I decided to give him a shot. Plus, he is easily the sexiest heroscape character yet, with that diaper. And, he's pretty easy, because other than the diaper, he's is almost neked. The trident was, of course, the most time consuming thing (especially at a 45 degree angle). Of course, there is still one major feature missing. His net. I just couldn't decide how to do it, to make it look like more than just a blob. Do any of you guys have ideas for the patter of his net? Also, I can't quite make it out, but is he supposed to have an eye patch on his left eye??? To me, recruiting a neked guy with an eye patch makes about as much sense as recruiting a talking ape with a peg-leg to haul around a battle standard with machine guns attached to it. Maybe this is Retiarius before he got injured.

Well, I couldn't figure out how to make that gun work right on my image (mainly a scaling issue) so I'm going to go ahead and post mine. I'm not all that pleased with it. From the knees down, he's good. Between the knees and torso he looks awesome. From his torso up, he doesn't look that great. It's almost like three different people made him. (I guess that says a lot about my moods, huh?) ;) I'm especially disappointed in his ammo, but couldn't for the life of me figure out another way to do it without spending an entire day just drawing his clip.

So, here he is, warts and all. I'll probably come back later and improve on him a bit.

ArgosCap, if you wanna try and modify him with better guns and different shading, feel free. I might learn something. :D

:passout:
WHOAH. THat's glorious!!!
Really like the shoulder pad shading.

DW's right hand could be just slightly bigger?
Or angled a little more up or down?
When I look at him I keep thinking he's missing a piece.

Maelchi,
Holy crap! I love the highlights you put on the angled DW9K gun! It looks really truly metallic. Very life-like.
You also did a SPECTACULAR job with Retiarius' net and eye-patch! That's exactly the kind of thing I was trying to figure out for the net. However, I do like the skin tone on my original version better. We've already got several black characters. I interpreted Retiarius' orangish skin to be that of a middle eastern guy, with a deep tan from training outside all day, beneathe the hot Mediterranean sun. But, you're version certainly works.

Hyperactive,
The Deathwalker looks AWESOME! The only thing is, I feel like he should be bigger. Looking at the actual figure, it seems like you did a pretty good job with the scale, but like HEH said, there's just something nagging about it. Some part of him should be bigger I think, but HEH's observation about the right gun being a little bit small caught the only thing that seems obviously out of scale. Maybe his whole upper half needs to be just a little bigger. Like maybe 5% or something. I'm not sure. I think I may play around with it a little, and see if I can figure it out. However, it may not be right away. First, I want to try to get some art done for the contest.

DeadeyeDan42,
If you're interested in learning to build these guys, I'm more than happy to answer any questions you might have.

-Most of the people on here use Paint to work on these. I usually use photoshop because it has a few extra features that can be helpful. I think Malechi uses some form of photoshop as well. But Paint (which is standard on all PC's) is all you really need.

-Save these files as .gif files. Gifs are small, and preserve pixel art perfectly.

-Usually, when we build these, we start with a template. Sometimes it's a pre-made naked body (male or female). Sometimes, it's a character that already looks a little bit like the character we are trying to make.

-You can find lots of "naked" templates, and a searchable archive of characters on this site: http://www.foxgnaws.com/archive

-That should help you get started. Keep in mind that it is okay to "frankenstein" characters by taking bits and pieces of other characters and assembling them together into a new one. A lot of items can be easily re-colored with the "paint fill" option. So if you see a guy in red armor, it's pretty easy to make the armor gray or green, if you want to. For more advanced tips, check out my step-by-step explanation of Utgar, on Page 13 of this thread.

Realized the DW9K did not have a railgun on both sides, so I created a rocket launcher for his right hand side (stage left).

ArgosCap: As for Retairius, I have to disagree with your opinion on the skin color. The figure itself is heavily brownish/orange, I got as close as I could without going too dark (of course it may be a Mac vs. PC thing and you are seeing a much darker image than I am - Macs tend to be much lighter in the visual light spectrum).

CONFESSION: I cannot take credit for the coloration of the railgun. It happened due to resizing and using the Sharpen feature. I liked the way it looked and just cleaned up the individual pixels from there!
