Mal, these Greeks are excellent! I'm amaze at their chest armor. Parmenio's as well.
Well done.

The Sacred Bands' chest armor Parmenio's with the gold and decorations removed!

Mal,
Wow! Parmenio and the Sacred Band look freaking awesome. Those may be some of the best micros yet! Also, I figured the metallic look on the railgun was from some kind of filter, but whatever you used, accident or not, it looks sweet!

As far as Retiarius, I don't know how he looks on other screens, but on mine he looks darker than Brickman's Agent Carr. Honestly, if you were true to the figure I own, he would be totally orage (there is no hint of brown in my figure at all, as far as I can tell). Of course, you must keep in mind that I think I am partially color blind. Sometimes, I seem to confuse certain shades of gray, green and blue. When I created the comic book version of Kee-Mo-Shi, I used the colors straight from the comic. According to my color selector, they are shades of orange. When I look at the art, I would swear they are shades of green. I don't know why I see it like that. So it's quite possible I am seeing orange as brown or visa versa. But my Retiarius figure looks like a dirty orange color to me, but not really brown.

DeadeyeDan,

Sorry, my step by step of Utgar is actually on Page 15 of this thread. I think I posted the original Utgar on page 13, but I meant the one with the visual stages of his development. Sorry for the confusion. Obviously art requires a lot of personal trial and error, but if there is anything I can do to help you get started with the basics, I'm always happy to help. Oh, and enter the contest too! Do Valguard or something!

I might need a bit of experience for that, I"m still working out the texturs of clothing, And as I just learned, startiong from statch os one heck of a job, with is why I"m trying a easyer one to acomplish.

And no problem with the confusion, I take it in big doses daily. :)

Well, here's my first micro hero, he's not from heroscape but he's just as good,

Sam Fisher! from the Splinter Cell game series!

I relied mostly on the micro corp no 3 that Argos [?] did.

I took a second look and you are correct Retairius was indeed way too dark. So I polished his bronze up a bit ...

Well, after a bit of head throbing work, I got Sir H all done!

I"m not happy with the shield though, needs a LOT more detail, also, he was frankentiend with the KOW and uses sIr denricks sword.

Also I used the 'grut stuff' to make this elite grut chief.

I really like the red eyes.
The shield could use more work. That is, when your head is done throbbing.
Sheesh. Sounds like Mirco-ing is involved work!

Great job on repositioning the shield.

Mal,
Great work on animating the shield!

I just LOVE teamwork.

DED,

Your creations are pretty good for your first day of working on them. I thought your Orc Chief was particularly creative. Couple more tips:

1. I use that "foxgnaws.com" archive when I am looking for a particular weapon or clothing article, instead of Ze Ball. The reason is that there is a very easy-to-use search feature on foxgnaw and it has a lot of the same art, and some stuff that Ze Ball doesn't have (like weird variations of characters). Do a search for "Samurai" and you will get all kinds of weird results, like "Samurai Superman" and stuff like that, which can actually be helpful (sorry, no good pieces for Kaeoman Awa guys). Ze Ball is nice, if you know exactly what category to find the character you are looking for, or you want to see everything in one category. For example, I know that if I look in Masters of the Universe, I will find a variety of shoulder pads and armor. I look in Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat for hand wraps and leg wraps, etc.

2. When doing a black character like Sir Hawthorne or the guy from Splinter Cell, use dark shades of blue and gray, instead of actual black. This allows you to see features better, but still gives the overall impression that the clothing/armor is black. Zoom in on my Krav agents. They all appear to be wearing black, but when you zoom in, you can see that they are colored dark shades of gray. You loose some of the cool little details and shading when you go all black.

I also noticed you're using the basic default colors in Paint. If you click on Colors>Edit Colors, you can pick ANY shade of ANY color you want!

3. In order to make a sword look as if it is coming out of someone's hand, you have to:
A. Put the sword on top of the hand, and erase the part of the handle that goes behind the hand.
B. Put the body over the sword and erase the front part of the hand, where the hilt is sticking out of his hand.

4. When you want to create a logo or a weapon, or an article of clothing that doesn't exist yet, I find it helpful to do it seperately, and later attach it to the character, like you did with the grut stuff.

For example, I did a Sir Hawthorne also (it's buried in the posts). I made the dragon on his shield a whole seperate project. I actually found a dragon on the internet with a similar silhouette to the one on Hawthorne's shield, then filled him in black, adjusted details with a pecil tool, and then shrunk him down to a size that would fit on Hawthorne's shield.

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/he.gifhttp://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s153/argosail/backstaber.gif

When you try to draw a logo straight onto the shield, it will drive you crazy, trying to adjust everything to fit in that little space, and it probably won't look as good (although Jonathan did an amazing job on his little Minion shield).

When you want to draw a small detail like a logo, set up a new workspace, and draw what you want, without worrying about size constraints. Don't get too detailed, because you will loose a lot of details when you shrink the object down. Once you have the basic shape of what you want, shrink the object down so that it actually fits in the space you want it (in this case, on the surface of the shield). Finally, as a last step, paste the artwork onto the shield. This will save you a lot of craziness!

This is how I did the logo on the KOWs, and the Utgar symbols on the Zettian.

Hope that helps! And I hope I don't seem overbearing giving you the tips. Feel free to tell me off, at any time!

Now to fix the [Legionnaire] and drop the spatha, get him a good gladius.....

[START -> Educational Message]
Technically the sword in the image is neither as the cross-guard is much too large. Also, both the Spatha (heavy infantry) and the Gladius (light infantry) were used by Roman soldiers ... In reality, the Spatha is the much more formidable weapon than the Gladius. Think of it this way, the Katana (Samurai Sword) is to the Spatha; as the Ninjato (Ninja Sword) is to the Gladius.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled Micro Heroes ...

Hahaha....great take on Einar! Just perfect!

I think his weapon should be some kind of spear or staff though. Utgar is depicted with a spear-like weapon. Jandar has a staff. Kelda and Raelin also use spears. It seems to be a trend among unique (and presumably high ranking) kyrie. The only unique Kyrie who doesn't use a spear/staff is Concan. But then, he is a direct patron of the knights.

The bloody swords look wicked cool though. Right away, you look at this guy and think....I'll come back and talk to him some other time.

Ah c'mon!
3 is a heckuva lot better than zero.

With a smaller group of entries we'll see a buttload of votes for each contestant. As opposed to a smattering of one or two votes spread out over a dozen contestants.
It'll take time for more people to catch on, and want to try their hand at a Micro template.
I think 3 entries is just fine.

Brickman, you guessed at my plot. Fine, they are dead. I killed them all. The competition was getting too hot, so I did the only logical thing. It was easy too.

I rubbed a balloon against Fuzzie's Fuzz until the static electricity delivered a fatal shock.

For Chimpy, I just dangled a banana over a cliff.

I poked out both of them Dead Eyes on DED42!

I dared Hyperactive Sloth to drink six Red Bulls. He grew wings and flew straight into a 747. It was a disgusting mess.

So far, Malechi has managed to elude my best ninjas. But Jonathan...I'd be careful about reading any email attachments if I were you...

As long as you treated them equally and spent the same amount of time as you would on heroscape micros, it's fine. They look great. But I would suggest adding a little more "shading" to give them more depth.

look at the shoulder pads on these 2 guys. The right one has more shading and thus, more depth.

Braveheart, you made all of that from scratch?? Even the skull mask and shoulder pad on the Orc Chief? I'm very impressed. There is some very creative stuff in there. You should definitely take a shot at some of the official Heroscape characters if you get a chance!

I think the rule should be that you can post as many original micro hero characters as you like, as long as you provide custom cards for each character, like Brickman did! So, Braveheart, with all of those characters, you've got some work to do!

I don't think you should have to use all of them on cards. I only used some of mine. I would just like to say that using microheros on cards is a very easy way to finish a card you don't have an actual figure for.

Nice work Braveheart. He looks very cool and colorful. His hat looks a little funny though. I don't have the fig, but it looks a little too tall and skinny.

Here are a couple that I have been working on, that I just don't have the energy to complete. Jotun and an update of "Kra-Ne-Um." I know, Jotun isn't to scale, but he would be much too big if he was. He's already a pain to work on at this size. I just can't seem to get his hair right. If anyone wants to finish up all the little details on these guys, or even do some of them, these guys would be that much closer to being done. For now, they are incomplete, so if you want to make them your next project, please do!

XSI, I love the work you did on Kaemon Awa. He really looks fantastic and very true to the figure. I think Brickman's assessment of the "non-humanoid" factor may have played a role. Q9 is just really big and elaborate, so he looks really impressive, and grabs your attention, no matter how cool the little humanoids look. Kaemon Awa was about as cool as you can get!

By the way Brick, I was sorry to hear that you were discouraged about joining in on the contest. You are definitely one of the best artists on this thread. Maybe next time?

I do hope we do a contest again some time. Maybe after another wave or two has been released. We're getting caught up on a lot of the existing characters. Let's see....who do we have left...

Morsbane, Syvarris (and the elves), the Vikings, the Sentinels, the various soulborgs, the flagbearers (which not many of us seem to have) and most of the rest are non-humanoid. A couple of people have said they were going to do Primordians. Those would definitely be cool. Are you guys still working on them? I can't wait to see the vampires and riflemen in the next set.

Braveheart, good work on Jotun. Looks like Sir Denrick couldn't reach his sword past Jotun's belt. It's rather unfortunate for him that Denrick can reach that high though.

Alrighty then! XSI, I'm sorry, but I decided to update Krugg. It seems like your version is based more on the package art, and I wanted to make him look more like the figure. I did use your feet and muscles, but he really needed that big belly that says, "I can eat you for lunch...litterally." I also gave him a big, ugly custom head and darkened him up a bit.

Then I decided it was time to do Khosumet, the Dark Lord himself. I still need to give these guys their weapons. I am working on darkening XSI's awesome Krugg Sword to match my version. I saw a good scythe for Khosumet SOMEWHERE, I just can't remember where.

HEH,
I'm sure people will be more interested in the static Q9, then my "build-a-bot" animation, so here he is. Also, Valguard needs to be put onthe first page. XSI, do you know who did him? I'm guessing, based on style, maybe Jonathan?

Brickman,
Carr looks WAY better with that coat! Funny story...I was actually thinking about updating him with the exact same jacket. Great minds and all.

Braveheart,
Great job on the Tarn spearman. I agree with Brickman though, you don't have to do everything from scratch. If you go on the foxgnaw archive, you can find a lot of great pre-made stuff that is really helpful. Even if it's not exactly what you want, it's often easy to adapt it into what you want. It will save you a lot of time. Of course, part of the reason I haven't done the vikings or more of the samurai myself is because they do require a lot of custom work. But check out that site. You might find some helpful stuff there.

Argoscap, that krugg is amazing! And my modded spear and gloves came from foxgnaws.

Braveheart,
I was looking at the Tarn figure, and comparing him to your micro. He looks good. I especially like the facemask and sleeves you designed. I think his helmet needs to be more pointy though. Your micro's head is a little flat. And I think his belt is kind of low on his hips. But, very good work.

Syvarris,
I think your guy looks really good, for not using any pre-existing items. One thing I'd suggest is give him a black border. It makes the figures look a little more neat/tight, like a comic book drawing (easier to identify his definition, because otherwise he slightly blends into the background). I know it's time consuming to make a black border, but that's part of the reason I use pre-existing stuff, or start with a border and color it in with paint fill. Also, you should slim down the arrow on his bow. It looks like he is going to shoot a big brown salami at someone. It's just wrong. But otherwise, I think he is very cool and colorful.

I'll be posting some updates soon, when I have time to finish.

Ah, yes, Valguard is mine - you're WAY too good at this, Argos. Hopefully I'll get some others made up in the next couple of weeks. I got caught up in tourney preparations and modding figures, but now I think I'll have some more time for micro-heroing.

By the way, Q9 is awesome - I had to vote for him myself :D

Here is another quick update of stuff I've been working on. An Armoc Viper and an update of Fuzzie's Crixus. For Crixus, I basically just muted some of the colors on Fuzzie's version and updated his mask and helmet. It just needed to be done to give him that classic gladiator look. Hope you guys like them.

I wasn't sure if any of you have this problem, but when I try to copy templates or finished micro heroes, they won't copy straight to paint. I have to copy them into word, then to paint. This would be fine, except the picture is always blurry and is very unrefined. If anyone else has this problem, I was wondering if you found a better way.

ArgosCap
June 8th, 2007, 07:43 PM
Hmm, I'm not sure what Paint's limitations are, but I'm guessing that you are having some sort of format problem, since not all formats are created equal. Is the stuff you are trying to copy or paste onto from a JPG or PNG file? If both are in GIF format, I'm not sure what the problem is. I would venture a guess that maybe you are turning the pics into JPG files when you go through Word?

Malechi, I fully agree. Taking screenshots definitely does seem more time consuming and difficult. Why don't you guys just right click and hit "Save As" to save the templates in one of your folders? Then, all you've gotta do is open them with paint. If they are GIF files, this should work flawlessly.

By the way, if you guys ever get frustrated using just paint, you can always use Google to find some neat image editing software. Try searches like, "free gif editor" or "free image program."

Okay, I hate to double post, but this thread seems a little slow. Here are a few more updates I've been working on. I updated Khosumet and Krug with a little more detail. I revamped Fuzzie's Ne-Gok-Sa, using some of his parts. I also gave Krugg his sword, which is modified from the extremely cool sword that XSI made. I just thought it would be extra cool with the skull. Anyway, hope you guys like the updates. If you are still seeing the old Khosumet and Krug without sword, hit "refresh."

Hey! Sorry, I've been on vacation! Yeah, actually, I have been thinking about doing a regular microheroes cartoon. I thought it would be fun. I actually started thinking about it back when I heard that they were looking for cartoons for HS Codex. So, when that guy started doing the "news" show with figs, I thought he might like a nice, neat microhero cartoon template. The microhero art is perfect for a cartoon strip. Since the request has been made, I will consider doing my original idea (which uses one of the Nakita agents as the main character). I probably couldn't do it weekly, but I could try to do a page every week or two.

Maybe we could get a couple of microhero cartoons going. Anyone else have an idea for a cartoon? I would prefer to see the Heroscape microheroes here, but we could also do some "crossover" cartoons with other existing characters.

In any case, these cartoons are going to require lots of character art, so keep it coming! Wave 7 is out! Time to get back to work! :)

These are all pretty cool :) Have there been any male depictions of Vydar? I have nothing against a female general, in fact it would be pretty cool to see, but I was reading the character bios on Heroscape.com yesterday and the bio for the primadon Gorillanators refers to Vydar as a "he." I wish they'd release official artwork for all of them; I like the Oriental-esque Einar on the first page but I don't think they've ever actually shown him, either.

No, there haven't been any male depictions of Vydar (which has been bugging me) and yes all the current generals are undoubtedly male. It would be very cool if they released artwork for all of them. A least some artwork for Vydar and Einar, they don't have any. And thanks, I made Einar.

Brickman, I've been working my butt off on the new comic ("Helga and Stan"). However, as much time as it took, I am not going to be doing these on a regualr basis. I'm a perfectionist, and it just takes a little too long to do it right. But I will try to continue the series as I have time. I have posted the new comic in a new thread called "Heroscape Micro Hero Comics."

Alright guys, to get theings started again, I have created a new webpage, with all of the characters done so far, organized by General. It mimics the style of the "Ze Ball Breaker" site. No, I did not post every version of every character. I only posted the versions I liked best, and in a few cases, I made some minor changes (actually, I turned them all into gif format, with a transparent background). I hope you guys don't mind me messing with the original art, I just wanted these guys to look super sharp on the page. Anyway, you can find them on:

Are you talking about the "ArgosCap" micro? Well, I change my avatar so frequently, I figured the best thing to use would be my "self-micro" which I briefly used as my avatar. Of my other 4 avatars, 2 of them have had pictures of my real self in them, but I always dress differently. The "Common v. Hulk" avatar is the one I've used the most. Should I change the art, with me punching a Hulk micro in the nuts? Consider it done!

Brickman,
I like the color scheme on the newer Vydar, but I think I like the old head better. Most of the Kyrie generals we have seen so far look pretty young and energetic. The bald version looks kinda old. Although, I suppose that might account for why he has gained the wisdom to USE FIREARMS instead of swords and spears! Or maybe he just needs to 'cuase he's too old for brawling. What do you think???

Brickman AND Malechi AND all other artists,

I have been pondering an idea. This thread is getting long now. 28 pages and over 400 posts. I am wondering if that is daunting people from getting involved with the thread (I know that when I see a 20+ page thread, I usually just pass, or ONLY read the last page). So here is my idea:

We now have pics of Wave 7, Wave 8, SotM figs, the next large pack, the "Spiders" and the promo monk character. That is a LOT of new characters. Maybe we should leave this thread for the older characters and start a new thread called "Micro Hero Art: Heroscape, 2007" and make that thread just for the 2007 characters. It might reinvigorate some of the artists and give us a "fresh start" that will draw more attention and get more people involved. What do you think? Should we start a new thread? This one is starting to feel a little bloated to me. Does it feel that way to anyone else?

I was thinking that Vydar is more of an old wise kyrie who has some biotechnical enhancements. When he drinks from the wellsprings, it makes him feel young, but he's still old. Oh and the big arm is mostly just an arm, not a gun.

I don't know about the whole, fresh start thing. It just, I don't know, doesn't seem right. Maybe you should talk to an admin, just to see what they think.

Jpg format has a tendancy to blur/distort pixel art. From what you said in your post, it sounded to me like you may have drawn a lot of his clothes/accessories from scratch (you mentioned that you couldn't make a good sword. Usually we just adapt pre-existing items and paste them onto our micros. You can find a good library of clothes, accessories and even a couple dozen swords, if you look up a site called foxgnaws. Good luck with your future micros!

Yes, MS Paint is Microsoft Pain. If you have microsoft windows on your computer, then MS Paint is standard. Look under Accessories.

Photoshop offers a few extra options that makes the micros a little easier to make (especially if you are doing complex "special effects" like making something glow). However, all of these micros could be made in standard MS Paint, and many of our best artists are using just that.

Very few of these micros have been made from scratch. Usually, we take a pre-existing character, that has a simialr look to the one we want to make, and we just adapt it. Sometimes we copy and paste different parts of different figures (a technique we refer to as "Frakensteining"). If you google the term "Micro Heroes" you will find a number of archives with MANY existing characters and templates.

I use paint. When I do my Micros, I just copy the body from a temp, but I all of my other work from scratch. Of all my Micros, the only thing I ever copied was the wings on my Female Vydar.

This is by far my best, and it is 100% custom:

I keep hearing that MS Paint can't do these. I find that hard to believe. Perhaps it may be more difficult, but not being able to do it at all must be wrong.

I did the following drawings some 15 years ago, utilizing Aldus SuperPaint on a Mac SE30 with 9" Black and White Monitor (color was signified by patterns only) ...

Yes, I do believe MS Paint = MicroSoft Paint.

If you are unable to create MicroHeroes in MS Paint, PhotoShop won't help you. See this post (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?p=333600#360868) for my Don't Blame MS Paint (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?p=333600#360868) rant.

Jeez. That's the last time I post in this thread.

Why? Because I tried to save you from spending some $400.00 on something that wasn't going to actually help you?!? On the other hand, Brickman has an apptitude for these, in his case PhotoShop is indeed an option.

Wanting PhotoShop when you are unable to create MicroHeroes with MS Paint is like wanting a PS3 when you can't play any of the games on your Commodore 64!

I think Brunak was just making a whimsical statement about wanting photoshop. Brunak, try not to be insulted, I think Mal was just trying to let you know that you don't really need to spend the money on Photoshop, when you can do most of the micro hero stuff (and a lot of other great artwork) with MS Paint. A lot of people underestimate the simpler programs capabilities and so it might be worth the time to see what it can do, before you spend money on something that isn't really going to give you any big advantages (at least in terms of this kind of art).

Guys, I updated my website with some of the newer characters that you've been working on. Here's the address again:

Actually, for new designers I think MS Paint probably makes for better micros - streamlines the process and doesn't let you get carried away with all those bells and whistles.

As for bells and whistles, I finally got GIMP and it does a great job of providing them - for FREE!

It is easier to do a zombie tutorial:

1.Find a base micro.

2.Recolor the lightest skin color as the light green ofthe zombie.

3.Recolor the middle skin color as the middle green of the zombie.

4.Recolor the darkest skin color as the darkest green of the zombie.

5.Either paste the generic zombie head on or color both eye sockets completely black.

6.Add scars

7.Cut off the ears

8.Add loin cloth if necesarry

Okay, so I only have a few new Heroscape figures. A templar night, and the green ninja chick from Wave 8. I guess we still don't know her name. I will have to wait until she comes out to put any more detail into her. If anyone feels like drawing a lance for the Templar, go for it!
