NEW VERSION
After seeing LordRaidor's pix below, and seeing for the first time the base stickers compared to the originals, I felt an update was needed. Following LordRaidor's recommendations I lightened, adjusted and tweaked the hell out of the image. I feel it now more acurately represents the HeroScape Base Stickers.
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h44/Malechi_HeroScape/hs_samples/before_after.gif
Before ........... and ........... After
This is an 8.5" x 11" sheet to be printed on to a full page sticker sheet or glossy paper. The sheet may then be cut to any figure's base size to create matching HeroScape bases for any miniature line and stuck or spray glued to the base as needed.
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h44/Malechi_HeroScape/hs_samples/bssample.gif
.......................Note that the above sample represents what the stickers look like when cut out, the image prints out at a full page size from border to border!
This was originally requested by GrungeBob for his own HeroScape conversions and now made available for all! The HeroScape Base Stickers.pdf file contains a single 8" x 10" original art image that emulates the HeroScape Stickers used on the miniatures.
Although the page is set for US Letter printing, due to the nature of this image it should print out fine on A4 paper whether you choose resize image or not. A little smaller/larger won't affect the image all that much.

Heh... That reminds me of when I was at the store yesterday. Hopefully you will appreciate this.
So there's this guy, probably in his 30's, and he has his young daughter with him. She starts to run away from him and he calls out her name: "AMBER LYNN!" I almost burst out laughing.
Or did I just severely date myself with that one?

LordRaidor,
What did you use for the base under Crimson Hawk? Is it one of the Traveling Base Mold bases? I am just wondering because I too have Crimson Hawk. It was that photo of yours that convinced me to buy some MechWarrior pieces while Maxo-Texas and I were still working on MechScape. Maybe someday that project will return ...

I actually machine my own bases out of wood. I buy 1.5" wooden nickels from the craft store. They're 1/8th" thick, which is perfect for HS bases. I use my wife's rotary tool to bevel the edges down to a 30-degree angle, then paint them "espresso brown" and slap one of your stickers on top...
...voila! ...Custom bases that look just as good as the real thing, ...at least from across the table...

M.G., ...it's one of the WizKids plastic figs. He's one of my most popular customs (right up there with the Wookiee Commandos). I've actually made three other Omnicron Soulborg heroes, the Stormhawk Mk7, Thunderhawk Mk8, and Warhawk Mk9, ...all using Malechi's cool base stickers, of course. I'll post pix of all of them eventually, if I ever get around to rebuilding my 'customs' thread...
In the meanwhile, here's a pic of the Stormhawk Mk7 (in the background). All of the figs here (except for Sullivan, obviously) are on my custom bases, proudly showcasing Malechi's Base Stickers.

LordRaidor (or anyone else that has used the base stickers),
I need an honest opinion here. I look at that photo and all the custom bases look much darker than the "real" one under Sully. Is this a paper issue; lighting issue; or simply the base sticker image being too dark? I have to admit, this is one of the few custom pieces I have created that I never printed out as I have not yet created any customs.

...Well, ...honestly, ...they're far better than anything I could whip up, and plenty good enough to fool me from more than a meter away, but they're not spot-on...
I print mine on matte label-paper (not glossy, as the photos will attest), which certainly accounts for some of the discrepancy. I also am still using the first inkjet printer I ever owned, ...purchased in 1996, so that's not exactly top-of-the-line equipment either. However, ...I do think that they need a little 'lightening-up', ...maybe a little less brown, or a little more yellow...
Take my opinions with a grain of salt though, ...my wife regularly claims that I am color-blind... ^_^
The patterning is also way off, as the officials have mostly 'radial' cracks and jags out from the center, where yours are kinda random-ish, but again, I'm not that particular myself...
Overall, I have no complains with your work. It was there when I needed it (waaaaaaaaay back on HS.net...) and suits me just fine. I love 'em!...
Here's a few more, if visualization vs. Syv. & Saylind will help (plus, it's a cheap way to pimp my customs...)

HeroScape Base Stickers

Before ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... and ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... After
...I do think that they need a little 'lightening-up', ...maybe a little less brown, or a little more yellow...
I have lightened the image tremendously (I have a Mac, the Mac monitors are much brighter than a PC's, therefore PC users see my work as darker than intended). I shifted the color to a much more muted light olive tone.
The patterning is also way off, as the officials have mostly 'radial' cracks and jags out from the center, where yours are kinda random-ish, but again, I'm not that particular myself...
Well, they're still "random-ish", but I did find them to be much, much too large! Once I finished adjusting the color, I reduced the image by 50%. I then copied it until I filled up the page. This effectively gives much smaller ruts. As people have many differing bases on which they place these stickers, I wanted to stay with the single large image so it may be cut out anywhere on the page. This basically leaves the radial look out in the cold as an option.
Turns out the PDF is password protected.
Yes, you can thank the eBay seller who was selling Truth's customs and of course the wonderful few members back at HQ, I won't mention who J@$0N and K00K@L1V3$ amongst others, that responded with apathy and actually blaming Truth because he posted his custom in a public forum in the first place. And now the HeroScape Base Sticker comes with a brand new disclaimer at the bottom ... all for the same low price!
P.S. --> I like the little 'rocks' you threw in, just to give them personality...
The rocks were inspired by Mimring's base. If you look close you will see a couple skulls on his base!

The changes are an improvement. I printed some out last night and they are a little too light and "contrasty" now. (This was from an Epson 7-color photo proofer.) I played with the curves to "muddy" the contrast and darken the mids. I'll see later today whether that--at least for my printer--got it a little more close to the HS official stickers.
Nonetheless the ones I did still look pretty nice. Just my perfectionist self trying to make them a little closer match still. Thanks for the assistance!

Chiming in to add to the praise. Excellent work, as always. However, excellent effort, as well! Seeing a color variation when compared to the official bases, and then taking the time to make a truer base sticker for the community to use.
Great job, Malechi! Thanks for your time and energy with this, and all your projects here.

Okay, accuse me of thread necromancy if you must, but I have a question about the stickers, and it just seemed silly to start a whole new thread.
My question is, how do you guys who use the stickers cut them out? A 1 3/4" circle punch seems perfect for the large single, and I think a 1" might be right for the small single (I tried a 1 1/4", but it was too large), but I really have no idea how to manage the double bases. It's such an odd shape, and since the bases are beveled, you can't really use the base itself as a template.
What are other folks doing to solve this dilemma?
LordRaidor
August 20th, 2006, 12:29 PM
...I know it's not much help, ...but I just use scissors to cut my circles...
^_^
I've never had the 'double-base' dilemma, since I'm too unskilled to make my own double-space bases, and I don't have the heart to cannibalize official fig bases and recycle them...

I cut them out with a standard Exacto blade. But then I've created a presized tempate into which Malechi's art has been imported. That way I could do the large and small sizes of the double basers as well as the large single (DW9K).
Single base stickers are 1.0688" in diameter--makes it hard to find a punch of exact size :)

Ask Doc Savage....he says he has a method that works. Of course I haven't tried it yet.
Worse case cut a rough shape stick it on and then use an Xacto to trim teh edges.

Hunh ... well, okay, do you have your template up as a download? If not, care to? :)

Is that 1 1/16"? That's what I measured them to be, and, yes, there's no punch that size. 1 1/4" is definitely way too big. But I just got a 1" punch and, punching out two circles and overlapping them is actually pretty reasonable looking.
Of course, I admit that I'm actually recycling CD sticker sheets that I've already used the CD stickers off of. I waste some ink printing the sticker pattern in the useless circles, but the sticker paper is essentially free (since I was just going to throw them out anyway). And the CD stickers have some extra "strips" along the side that I have no idea what they're really supposed to be for, but if I cut my second circle just right, I have these little arcs of sticker that I can use around the edges of my overlapping circles ... nifty, eh?
Ask Doc Savage....he says he has a method that works. Of course I haven't tried it yet.
Well, okay.
(Close your ears.) HEY DOC!!!! C'MON OVER HERE!!! What's your method?
Worse case cut a rough shape stick it on and then use an Xacto to trim teh edges.
You know, I tried trimming my circle when I had a punch that was too big, and it didn't work too well. I was hoping that the bases would have enough of a "lip" that I could use that as a guide for my knife, but it didn't work for me. Which may just be because I suck at all this artsy-crafty stuff.

If you don't want to bother with cutting out your own base circles, Worldlabel.com (http://www.worldlabel.com/) has both 1" circular labels (http://www.worldlabel.com/Pages/wl-ol1025.htm) (63 per sheet) and 1.2" circular labels (http://www.worldlabel.com/Pages/wl-ol6000.htm) (48 per sheet) in 100-sheet packages for $18.95, available in matte white and laser or injet glossy white. Just print the PDF image on the whole sheet and peel as needed. (they were the best price I found while searching; other sites wanted the same or more for a pack of 20 sheets)

I scanned a double base and printed it out. Then I cut it out of a piece of paper and fiddled with it til it was the right size. Then I traced it onto a piece of thin sheet styrene and cut it out with scissors. I now had a template. I printed out malachi's great base pattern on a piece of photo paper, cut it out and superglued it to the base and then superglue the figure on top.

O.K. Malechi, ...I just finished rebasing the Zaravi Incursion Prizes - with your new '2nd generation' base stickers!!!
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10038/mal_base.jpg
Prototypes with 1st generation stickers on the left.
Prizes with 2nd generation stickers on the right.
(Official bases in the center for comparison - ...duh ^_^ )
Please forgive my poor amateur photography skills and lack of adequate interior lighting. ...I think the pic is still good enough to make the needed distinctions. Again, ...PLEASE don't think I'm being overly critical - the stickers look GREAT, are MUCH better than anything I could ever manage myself, and really make my custom bases look indistingiushable from official ones from more than two feet away. I'm just providing feedback, ...since you asked... ^_^
Overall, the stickers are much improved. ^_^ The 'ruts' are much closer to the standard 'size' and 'depth'. However, I think they could be stand to be reduced even further. Offhand, I'd say another 50% reduction should be about right, ...but that's just eye-balling it.
The 'lightening-up' was also a significant improvement, but I think you actually OVER-corrected with the brightness/saturation. The bases now look a little TOO yellow for my (admittedly poor) visual acuity. I think that the 'yellow' should definitely be darkened (at least half-way back toward the original hue), and the green would also benefit from being just a whisker darker.
I also think the ratio of 'green-to-yellow' in the image should be bumped up, ...maybe even doubled. I know there are variations even in the 'official' stickers, but very few of them have as many 'yellow' patches as yours do. Most are only about 25% 'yellow' at the most, and your look heftier than that. It wasn't as obvious when the 'yellow' wasn't quite as 'yellow', but I can really see the difference in the new 'lightened' pattern. May not be much you can do about that at this point without a total pattern overhaul, ...and it might just be nit-picky anyhow, ...but I thought I'd mention it...
One final observation, though I believe it is directly tied to the 'lightness' issue. The color of the PAINT on my wooden bases actually looks... off... to me with the new stickers. With your 1st gen stickers, I always thought that the 'espresso' brown color I use on my bases was almost perfect. With the 2nd gen stickers, however, the brown on the bases (same bottle, painted the same time, etc.) now looks just a hair too DARK to me now. I know it's just a 'trick of the light', with the the 'lighter' stickers making the same base coat look 'darker' by contrast, but it still has the effect of making the bases look (ever-so-slightly) less realistic (to me). I know it sounds kooky, ...and you might not even be able to tell in the pic above, ...but again, I just thought I'd mention it. If you shifted the light intensity back down toward the original version, I'm sure it would also correct or even eliminate this 'problem' as well...
So there it is; take it or leave it. ^_^ Thanx again though, Malehi, for making this resource available for all of us who like our custom bases to look as close as possible to the real thing. ...It still won't get you the 'roles' you want in CoN games though - those are random, I tell ya'... ^_~ Keep up the great work!!!
^_^

Corrected Link to the new website formatting. Thanks for the FYI on that.
As for the color being "light", I tested the colors by printing the PDF at Kinkos on their Series 5000 printer (this is their high end premier employee use only printer, only one in fifteen Kinkos has this machine) and the colors were correct. I printed the current version because the initial version was never test printed (I do not do customs) and I was later informed it was too dark when printed. You may want to check that you are not printing with your preferences set to the Draft or Speed setting. If that is not the case you may need to calibrate the Gamma settings for your printer ...

I am sure they are out there. Note that the PDF for the HeroScape Base Stickers is a full sheet image so that you can cut the image out to any size you require. Designing the circle or double spaced size into the sticker is fine, but only if you are using official bases. With a full sheet you can use any base and make it appear as if it were a HeroScape base!
