View Full Version : My First Defeat

Tonight I fielded a 500 point Orc based army:
- Grimnak
- Tornak
- Swog Rider
- Blade Gruts
- Arrow Gruts
- Krug
- Me-Burq-Sa
* 495 Points
I realized beforehand that this experiment was heavily melee favored, but I've never fielded an army that featured this level of bonding before (I've only played a few times).
The battle was heavily in my favor up until the end. I even managed to take out his entire Tagawa Samurai squad in one turn. But as Grimnak, Tornak, and the Swog Rider fell...I was left with very little. Admittedly, Krug took a beating from the way dice were rolled, not because of errors in gameplay.
I learned a valuable lesson here. I don't think I'll use common squads unless I can field mulitples of the same unit. Otherwise, there just isn't enough firepower there.

I think using multiple commons almost always has to happen. Allthough some Common Squads are useble without multiples. I think the Sentinals can definatly be used well with one squad.
But Orcs aren't the best with just one squad.

I've been going over this battle in my head, because I thought I had put together a solid army. Never willing to accept defeat, I revisited the FAQ.
1) I forgot my Arrow Grut's Beast Bonding. This would've given me an extra turn with either Krug or the Swog Rider.
2) I also forgot about my Blade Grut's Orc Champion Bonding. I could've used either Grimnak or Tornak for this.
There was also an issue with my opponent using the Marro Warriors Water Clone ability. He was rolling for each figure he had left on the board. I'm not sure if these things would've changed the outcome of the battle, but I'm sure things wouldn't have gotten as bad for me as they did in the end.
Oh well, live and learn.

Yeah, the Orc Army will perform a lot better if you use this!
But I remember forgetting to use my bonding when I started playing.
Oftentimes I moved and attacked with the Hero, and then forget to move my Blade Gruts.
You mentioned earlier that you felt your army was melee heavy.
If you're using Blade Gruts with Grimnak and and Tornak, then consider Mimring with the Arrow Grut's beast bonding.
Mimring can fly around and Fireline up to 8 spaces...That's pretty good range.
I think of him as the Orc's air support unit.
"Call in the air strike!"

No sure what you mean here. When you clone the Marro Warriors, (instead of attacking,) you roll for each Marro Warrior left on the board.
Is that what he was doing?
Oh well, live and learn. Well, good luck and don't let losing get you down.
Remember, it takes a loser to make a winner. ;)

Yes. After reading the FAQ again, I misinterpreted the rule. They must act as a unit, which I assumed was 1 roll for Water Clone. But it meant that they all must either attempt Water Clone or move/attack. So I was wrong on this account.

A guy I work with, he's the one who turned me on to Heroscape in the first place. Since I posted this, I've put together a much more solid Orc Army, including Heavy Gruts with multiple archer units and Ornak. I can now field just about any combo of Orcs, up to x3 units of multiples.
He favors an all Marro army. I don't know why, but he's never beaten me...not once. I recently switched things up to a Vydar army with Kaemon Awa, and I still beat him pretty soundly.

Well, everyone loses eventually.
Except Theats.
And Jason.
