I was just putting my kids on the bus and lo and behold Danika Patrick the hot chick from Indy car just rolled by and waved in her motor home. This may seem odd to some but I live in Watkins home of good wine and fast cars. Watkins Glen International Speedway is just up the hill a couple of miles and if you want to get there you have to go by my house, so I get to watch Nascar trucks roll by, drivers, ferraris, vintage cars all sorts of crap. Whoopi Goldberg lives down the road about fifteen miles and Frank from Survivor Africa is an acquaintance of mine. We just hired a new chef who caters for Dinero, Angelina, and a bunch of other big wigs and often times people are in the winery who are fun to meet. Although I did not get to meet him Harry Potter ( Daniel Radcliffe) and his Dad came through recently on there way to trout fish NY's trout streams, , I poured for Tommy Hilfiger ( my dad taught him in sixth grade), I know the Bodine family personally since I went to school with all the nieces and nephews, Shatner was around two years ago, Last year was the Victoria Secrets models, A producer from LOTR, Sarah Michelle Gellar was around a couple of years ago. Most of the Nascar guys have eaten at our restaurant. I never really stop and think about all of this until this morning. Just seems kinda wierd to see all these people, Oh yeah Vegetarian Kimmies (Survivor)folks live down the lake from me as well. Also Eileen Collins is coming home now that she is done captaining space shuttles, her folks live about twenty miles away. Brian Williams the NBC news anchor is from down the road. We just hosted the LPGA and they come in and taste all the time though I do not know who they are and Joey Sindilar is here all the time too. Theres alot more as well. Does Anybody else live in a place like this other than LA of course?

Depends on what you consider famous.
EDIT: funrun got to me so I am adding details. How can you tell her no?
I once fixed a computer for Bill Gates dad. My father had a computer store in Peoria, Az. Next to Peoria is Sun City, a retirement community. Some close friends of Bill Gates parents, Boeing engineers, had retired there and were regular customers of my dad's store. When Bill's dad came to visit, his computer had a failure. I was recommended by his friends and I went out and fixed his computer.
I once built a storage solution for H. Ross Perot. Perot was starting up Perot Systems when he needed a large viable data storage solution. He called StorageTek to do the job. At the time I was a SAN Solutions Engineer with STK and was sent out to do the job. I only met Perot once in the early stages; the rest of the job was handled by his employees.
Mike Harris, a radio personality and owner of radio stations and newspapers used to be a regular at our Sunday dinner table. Mike Harris was a friend of my fathers. My father used to work for a company called CompuGraphic. They were the leader in typesetting technology. Every newspaper in the area used their machine thus they all knew my father. Mike Harris was originally a customer of my dad but eventually became a friend as they did more and more business on the side.
The guy that developed the 20mm Gatling Cannon is a friend of the family. Oddly enough I can't remember his name right now but he is on my reference list. I wish I could remember his name...its Italian...something like Calcitori. Again, this is someone that used to be a customer at my fathers computer store. He had long since retired from the D.C. think tanks but was still making money with some self-storage units he owned. I built and installed his POS. He is a big guy like me and took an instant liking to me; always giving me fatherly advice and such.
Robert Matori, CEO and President of ILX, used to have me over at his house regularly. Through him and his girlfriend I've met Arnold Schwartzenneger and some lesser celebrities that I can't recall right now. I used to work for his girlfriend as an executive assistant (overpaid secretary). She was a realtor in the Biltmore area of Phoenix. ILX is a company specializing in ownership and innovation of resorts, golf courses, and general luxury living.
Earl Campbell, famous back for the Houston Oilers, and I went to the same high school (Sandy Duncan went there too) and he came to talk to us during off-season practice.
I used to drive by Don Henley's, musician, ranch on the way to my inlaws.
I have had Gary Gygax (I will be surprised if any one posting on these boards needs me to explain who he is) sit in on a game I was running. It was 1985 in L.A. at OrcCon (or maybe it was just OrCon). While waiting for a D&D tournament to kick in my buddies and I decided to go into the free gaming area and waste some time. I was known for running a game on the spot but this time I brought out a little scenario that I had been working on for some time. It was called "Nissassa's Castle" and was a huge haunted/possessed castle that had been abandoned long ago by its evil demi-god owner. The scenario was designed to be almost impossible and I had built traps in it that could be outsmarted but not survived. I warned my friends but they wanted to play any way. In addition some other people overheard and asked if they could join in. The game went for only a couple hours when the last character died. Instead of the negative comments I was expecting all the players proclaimed it the "greatest adventure of all time" and left the table talking about it. Little did I know that I had drawn a crowd by this time and once my friends left the table another group sat down and wanted to take the challenge. Word spread and I ran the game over and over with the same result no matter how outrageously munchkined some character sheets were...every one died. That is...everyone but one. During one of my later sessions an older guy sat down, made a 1st level thief on the spot, and joined in. His character made it out alive (no treasure mind you). I was impressed and shook his hand. He just winked and said, "I've been doing this awhile." Later, while I was running another group, one of my pals showed up and exclaimed,"I heard Gary Gygax was in here!" To which one of my onlookers replied, "yeah, and he actually survived." I didn't know what Gary Gygax looked like and while running the game I never made the connection. We were just a couple guys enjoying a game of D&D.
Oh, and I almost forgot, I had dinner with Leann Rhymes, country singer/song writer, some years ago. Okay, okay, I didn't technically have dinner with her but we were one table away. Leann got her start with a chain of restaurants that have stages call Traildust. As such she was still a fan of their steaks when she became famous and was a regular customer. We lived in Rockwall, TX at the time and would travel into Mesquite regularly for shopping and dining. (I love Razzoo's) We were eating our steaks when my wife's friend whispered, "Isn't that Leann Rhymes over there." It was. My wife and her friend went over to act like fans while I continued to pay attention to my steak. (mmm....steak) I had always thought of celebrities as people so I didn't want to bother her as I wouldn't want anyone to get between me and a steak. (you'd bring back a nub)
 Oops, how could I forget. I have barbequed for the Von Ericks and spotted for The Missing Link. For those that don't know the Von Ericks and the Missing Link were famous wrestlers back in the day. In my younger days I used to live in Wills Point, TX ,and work and hang-out in Terrell, TX (no, I never met Jamie Foxx). I worked the kitchen (meaning I was the only one there) at a BBQ joint in the antique village. Fritz Von Erick had become a regular customer and hired us to cater a dinner for his family. The Missing Link actually lived in Wills Point. To be more specific the lived on a nudist ranch there. I believe it was called the Shenandoah. My mothers horse ranch butted up against the nudist ranch. Although I didn't meet the Missing Link there. I used to work out at a place in Terrell called Hardbodies (I used to be a powerlifter). ML was scoping out the place for working out; he was new to the area. There weren't a lot of people there so he asked if I would spot for him. After we lifted for a while he asked me if I had considered wrestling. I told him no, that I thought I was too big and not dextrous enough. (funny now seeing what wrestling has become) When he found out where I lived he invited me over but I declined as I wouldn't be comfortable in his environment. I only saw him in passing a couple times after that.
EDIT: hows that funrun, better?
Other than that I prefer sticking to smart or fun people rather than famous ones. Most famous people have little or nothing to contribute to my life.

I've had conversations with Hillary Clinton and Bill came to my church here in Little Rock for a couple of funerals, Chelsea was in our preschool. And I buried Willie Nelson's father-in-law, so met him when I pastored in Houston.
When I was seven, I attended the Easter sunrise service at Walter Reed AMC and met President Eisenhower (which I don't really remember) and Roy Rogers and Dale Evans (which I clearly remember!).
I once carried Ian Tyson's guitar, but I doubt if many people remember Ian and Sylvia. And I drove James Dickie (author of _Deliverance_) to the airport.

This thread would be more interesting if everyone told how you met these people and what they are famous for.
In 2002 I won a trip to the Olympics and there were famous people and athletes everywhere. Those I really encountered were:
Joe Pack, who later won the Silver medal in Men's Freestyle Aerials: I talked with him for a while while we played Blackjack at the same table, and I got some dark, blurry pictures together with my boyfriend at the time. He was really fun guy to hang out with, the type of person who would bring life to any party.
Herb Brooks, famous hockey coach of the 1980 gold medal-winning U.S. Men's Hockey team, the one the movie "Miracle" was about. I talked with him a bit about nothing while we got pictures taken together and he signed our hockey tickets. Herb has been deceased a few years now. . . I wonder what those tickets are worth?
Tara Lipinkski, famous U.S. figure skater, won gold(?) medal at 1998 Olympics. I didn't really meet her, but observed her from a few feet away as she filmed a segment for Entertainment Tonight cameras. There weren't any people standing around her, so it felt like a personal encounter. She is extremely pretty in person, and extremely short! She was standing on a box for her filming, I guess to make the horizon line behind her appear at the right level.
Once in Chinatown in L.A. I observed Jennifer Garner and crew filming underneath a bridge for a scene in Alias. I have some blurry, can't-tell-who-it-is pics of her as well.

Let's see.
The most famous person I know that I can think of would be:
Shawn Mullins
And this isn't a, "I met him in a bar one time. . . " type of thing.
This is a, "I went to college with him, knew him fairly well, he's really a great guy. . ." kind of thing.
Oh, and I also went to college with one of George Bush's (senior) protective secret service detail (after he left office).

And I went one-on-one against Cedric Ceballos (http://cedricceballos.com/) of the Phoenix Suns back in high school at a basketball camp in Ventura, CA. Albeit, so did half the camp... but I digress.

I went to High School (a year or two behind) with Anna Beth Gish, probably best known on these boards as the Scully enhancement of later X-Files. I was in some school production of a Moliere (apologies to anyone who knows the correct spelling) tragic comedy type thingy that she had to leave to do some serious ($$$) work :) I think I have seen her on our small screen everyday this past week on USA - and only once was it a flash of an X-Files episode. O, Trevor Alberts was also in her class, some of you espn watchers may know of him.
Also, questionably qualifying for this thread, I was in a AIDS documentary/educational video about High Schooler's responses to the AIDS epidemic through the dramatic arts, and though I didn't meet him, Dave Chappelle (in high school at the time, obviously) was in it. Narrated by Urkel (I've more than once wondered what awful thing he did that needed to be kept from the public eye, and this community service was the deal reached, cynical me.)
Cookies, please.

I cooked in a restaurant for Rowdy Roddy Piper (80's wrestling star). Ate omelletes with egg whites only.
I have served Tanya Harding drinks
Had "issues" with the Portland Blazers basketball team in the 90's (sorry-cant remember names, never did like basketball). They liked to get rowdy in bars that I worked.
Almost married an Olympic skier. Wont mention her name out of respect (she didnt like the attention).

And Crispin Glover, how could I neglect to mention :) I went up to Minneapolis to see a screening of a movie he put together. I can't remember the name exactly "What It Is" or something like that - he had an unrelated (though not completely) book out at the same time titled "What It Is and How It Is Done" (which he signed for me :) ) The movie's cast was entirely of persons with Down's Syndrome, save Glover. While I'm sure the immediate reaction to that is: Crispin Hellion Glover is going to hell, I loved this movie and had a nice five minute chat with him about his making it. That was a day I like to recall.
EDIT: while looking for the "Great Moments in Presidential Speeches" bit from the Letterman Show on YouTube.com (found one of 'em, but not the one I wanted, where a dishelveled Bush says something to the effect of "If you don't believe what we tell you to, we'll kill you"), I came across the trailer for "What Is It?" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhtaI7SCvq0&search=crispin%20glover) (I'm sure I should include some sort of disclaimer before one clicks the hot link, and this is it.)

I’m not sure what your definition of “know “ includes, but I’ve met and talked to a number of people in Washington. I’ve met and talked to many of the Country music stars of this past decade. I heard JoDee M sing (and dance) “ Bye Bye “ and “ It’s Alright” in her bus about a year before the album came out. I’ve met several sports stars also, but I certainly can’t say I’m on a first name basis with any.
I will probably meet one or more of the Heroscape Tournament winners at Gen-Con this year….. Would that count?

I'm with you Codeman. I don't really "know" anyone on my list except Calceterra (I finally remembered it, just can't spell it) and Mike Harris. The others were simply encounters. In truth most famous people are quite private and don't socialize outside of a small circle. When I worked for the realtor I had my share of really really rich people and feel sorry for them. I'd much rather be poor and unknown with dozens of good buddies than elaborately rich, famous and isolated. Although most of the people that I spent more than a handshake with turned out to be genuine real human beings, they all had privacy issues. To me if you actually know any of these people has little to do with who you are as to being lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time. I imagine that my brother who is the Lighting Director at a theatre has meet a horde of famous people but would never invite one home for a beer.

Me. I'm a damned celebrity. I just don't know any others.
Seriously - a friend of my wife was getting her hair cut, and mentioned my name. I don't remember why. The barber chick goes, 'THE Matt Drake? The guy who makes all those games?' My wife's friend, a little non-plussed, assured her that I did, in fact, make some games.
I have no idea why anyone would have heard of me, but there you have it. Every time you meet me, you're rubbing shoulders with a celebrity. Only I don't make games any more, I make dice towers, and I still can't figure out why anyone in the world would have heard of me, because my name is usually buried in the credits page. I don't have many author credits because I usually either co-author, edit, layout or illustrate. I don't usually write the whole damned book.
Though I did, one time, go to Half Price Books and find a book I helped publish. That's gratifying, I gotta say, to be flipping through the used RPGs and find your book on the shelf. I mean, I've seen my stuff in game stores once or twice, but that was the first time I saw one of my games in a non-specialty store.
I have corresponded with a number of artists who are starting to be big names in fantasy illustration. Jon Hodgson, Ralph Horsley, Chris Shy - these guys are regular artists for Wizards and other big companies, and I've worked with all of them, and a few more besides. Not that this means jack squat to anyone who doesn't have a reason to know Eric Lofgren from Rick Hershey.
I'm still essentially a big fat nobody in terms of anything at all - it's not like I was on Buffy or something - but people I don't know have heard of me. So that's something.
And in actual celebrity stuff - I got backstage to meet Everclear one time, and I used to scope betties with Ray Parker Jr, who wrote the Ghostbusters song. He lived in Mammoth Lake, CA, and that town is too small (or was in 1989) to hide anyone. So a couple times we sat in front of the grocery store and evaluated women as they walked into the store. In a resort town, there's plenty of women to evaluate. Of course, I was a college kid working through summer break to buy books, and he was driving a Maserati. So he did a little better on the pickups.

Just curious if anyone has met any celebrities and if so, what kind of people did they seem to be.
I went on a local music store's website the other day and noticed that Rocco DeLuca was performing live in store today. Like most of you probably, I had no idea who the hell he was. The kicker.... the founder of his label, Ironworks, is none other than Mr. Jack Bauer himself, Kiefer Sutherland!! To top that off, Kiefer decided to support his act and made an in store appearance himself. I was able to shake his hand and get some stuff autographed. He seemed rather soft-spoken. I asked him about the Christmas Tree incident and he seemed a bit embarrased. All and all, he was very down to Earth and very short.

I've been to 3 conventions over here in England; 2x Angel conventions and 1x London film and comic con. (has people from various programmes/movies).
At the first angel con: Amy Acker/Andy Hallett/Vladimir Kulich/Dayne Johnsonn (makeup guy)/Clare Kramer/Stacey Travis/Dennis Christopher/Sarah Thompson/Jenny Mollen.
At the second Angel con:Amy Acker (again)/J.August Richards/Christian Kane/Jonhathan Woodward/Vincent Kartheiser/Keith Szarabajka/Andy Hallett (again)/Adrienne Wilkinson/Clare Kramer (again)/Dayne Johnson again.
At the London con: Jorge Garcia/Maggie Grace/Nathan Fillion/Alan Tudyk
They all seemed really nice! Amy Acker was quite shy, Dennis Christopher danced with me and my friend at a party at the 1st con.
My friend was drinking at the hotel bar with Vincent Kartheiser.
At the London F&CC i felt rushed and was all over the place with things to get signed, and when i had my photo taken with Alan Tudyk he just put his arm around my shoulder and was a really cool guy!
And at the end of September i'm going to another convention and so far Julliette Landau (Drusilla from Buffy/Angel), Amber Benson(Tara from Buffy) and Adam Baldwin (Jayne from Firefly/Serenity-Hamilton from Angel) have all been announced! Can't Wait!

Like Malechi, I've probably met too many to count, mostly from work. It doesn't really excite me anymore..not sure if it ever did. I think that's why I often got assigned to handle the "name" folks, because I really could care less, and the "names" liked that it seemed. Every once in a while I would meet someone that I be kind of psyched about because I liked their work, but overall I was just sort of.....eh....they're human, same as us.
Offhand, to name a few of the more memorable encounters, if not the biggest names....
Brooke Shields....total *****. If I ever have to work with her again I think I will shoot myself in the foot. Maybe she was just having a bad day, but I doubt it. Her general conduct just screamed "I'm a ***** like this all the time." I worked with her shortly before 9/11, and there were newspaper photographers and news cameras taking footage of her and I eventually yelling at each other and her people trying to soothe over both sides. Of course coverage of the event was pretty much wiped off the media by the horrors that followed, but it was funny at the time, even though I didn't get to see myself in a tabloid and the TV coverage, when it aired, was motnhs later (on like a random Sunday afternoon) and severely edited, removing entire sections of the show. My buddy that worked the event with me was assigned to the other end of the venue, and told me afterwards how glad he was to have been on the side with the hot leggy chorus girls, and not the bitchy "star." Lousy friend got two dates out of the deal!
Hal Holbrook....younger forums will likely not be familiar with the man. Mostly a stage actor, although he's done other projects. An older gentleman, famous for playing Mark Twain in a series of one-man shows around the world. I worked on one of these shows, and got to spend a little time with the man. An awesome guy, and the kind of man where you could listen to his stories for hours. Part of his pre-show ritual (he gets there HOURS before curtain) is always the same type of wild rice soup, so we had a tasty couple bowls of it together and chatted. Good times...the man's filing system is a wonder to behold. He keeps records of every last detail of every performance he's ever done, and whips them out for reference whenever he goes back to a city or venue. Everything from "stage was too warm" to "dressing rooms smelled like urine" to "girl at the box office is very helpful" He jotted down my info, so now I'm somewhere in the files, forever linked to his time in Philadelphia. Too bad the man will probably pass away before he comes back to town.
Giselle Bundchen....hoo boy. This was one I actually was really excited about...a buddy of mine and I flipped a coin to see who would get to work the prime spots, and I won. Served him right for the above-mentioned Brooke Shields incident. This girl is ten thousand times hotter in person. I met some of the other Victoria's Secret models during the same event, but I honestly didn't care about them. Giselle makes them look like crap by comparison. Nice girl...the same cannot be said for her coworkers.
Penn and Teller....a wonderfully funny live show for those that like strange magic crap. One of the few incidents of famous folks I've met as a fan, not through work. They signed my ticket stubs. I recommend their show to anyone that finds themselves out Vegas way.
Arthur Miller....a legend amongst theatre folks. And hell, the guy was married to Marilyn Monroe back in the day, which should only serve to emphasize his coolness. He signed a little flier for a production of The Crucible I was working on at the time, and talked with me and my cast and crew about it. An awesome experience.
August Wilson....another theatre legend. This guy is so underrated outside the theatre world. He should be mentioned in the same breath as Miller, O'Neill, Beckett, Kushner, but sadly most of the general population doesn't know him. He's arguably the greatest American playwright of the 20th century. Better than Miller? Possibly...one could argue it. Clearly the best African-American playwright of all time. His main project was called refered to as the Decade Project....he wrote a play for each decade of the 20th century, focusing on the black experience in that decade, usually through the eyes of residents of the Hill district in Pittsburgh. Amazing work, and I recommend that anyone who just likes good literature start at the beginning and read decade by decade all the way through. Black or white, you'll like it. Google or Wiki should help you put the plays in order. Two of them have not yet been published in book form (1900s and 1990s, the bookend pieces). I worked on a production of The Piano Lesson, his 1930s piece, and he came to see it, surprising us all. An awesome guy. I have a little bit of sand from an African slave port, and a little piece of rubble from the Hill, both in a little detailed cardboard piano, that sits on my bookshelf to this day as a reminder of the good times I had working on that show.
Gary Sinise....one of the founders of Steppenwolf, better known to the public at large as Lt Dan from Forest Gump or the lead guy on CSI New York. Great guy (much cooler than John Malkovich, another Steppenwolfer, who's a bit of a man-diva and loonier than a loon) that really cares about new work and young artists. I've been itching to work for him at Steppenwolf (in Chicago) for years, and hopefully will have the chance sometime in the next couple seasons. Joan Allen (mom from Pleasantville, Goody Procter from the Winona Ryder Crucible, lead agent from Bourne Supremacy) is another Steppenwolf veteran that rocks your socks...she's really really focused on the "jobness" of the whole thing though. I've met few people who can compartmentalize as well as she can. She's either in work mode, or not there at all. Never does the personal life enter the work.

I went in my local comic/game shop and saw Tommy Lee Jones browsing the racks.
You know how TLJ usually plays these grim, forbidding characters who are totally badass but have a hidden soft side? In real life, he's nothing like that. By which I mean, absolutely no hidden soft side.
You could see everyone in the shop sort of watching him out of the corner of their eyes, but nobody went within ten feet of the dude. Not for an autograph, not to say, "Hey, you're Tommy Lee Jones," not for nothing. It was like he radiated some kind of supernatural aura of intimidation. The guy behind the counter didn't even say anything to him when he bought some comics for his kid -- just told him the price, took his money and made change.

Let's see...
My dad hangs out with the drummer from the band Kansas.
We used to live next door to a WCW wrestler. Can't remember his stage name to save my life, but his real name was Brian, and he was really big and really wierd.
My mom used to do some co-anchor thing with Georgia Bulldogs announcer Larry Munson back in the late 80s. Was kind of a big deal around here.
My wierdo uncle once fought Chuck Norris in a karate championship back in the early 80s.
My dad used rent equipment to the old wrestler Abduhla the Butcher.
My wife used to dance with one of the dancers on So You Think You Can Dance, Natalie Fortapolous (the Greek broad). My mother-in-law and Natalie's mother had "rival" dance studios in Memphis, so they usually had to compete in the same competitions.
Collective Soul is from my hometown, and my cousin used to run around with them a bit.
My wife's grandmother went to high school with Elvis. She also made the Cheers' star Rhea Pearlman a pair of earrings, and Rhea wore them a taping of the show.
I used to be pretty good friends with rookie Atlanta Braves pitcher Kyle Davies. In high school, his girlfriend and my girlfriend were best friends.
A friend of mine in highschool was Jeff Foxworthy's godson.
High five for my super list of B famous people. It's so obscure, I couldn't make this stuff up.
