Sounds cool. If it gets good reviews I'll have to netflix it.

"They tried for 50 years to make 'Lord of the Rings' as one movie before Peter Jackson found success making three," Martin said. "My books are bigger and more complicated, and would require 18 movies. Otherwise, you'd have to choose one or two characters."

By the way, is George Martin really as much of a pretentious, second-string, wannabe as this makes him sound or am I just reading too much into it?

I have high hopes for this, as HBO has been doing some great TV lately.

I think you are reading too much into it. Have you read George R R Martin?

No, but I know lots of people like him quite a bit. I just thought it sounded kind of funny the way he said it.

EDIT: I can tell that his writing style is not a good fit for me. I like fantasy to take a more mythic approach to storytelling rather than a modern character-driven one.

Ooh! Ooh! I can't believe how excited I am! This is going to be so cool! Man, I can't wait!

GRR Martin may be a pretentious jerk, but that doesn't change the fact that this will make a great series. In fact, when I first read through the books, I said to my wife, 'this would make a great series for HBO.'

Man! I can't wait!

Yeah, I was seriously just talking to my mom the other night about how I though HBO could probably pull these off pretty well, cause she was telling me she thought they read like a movie.

I know this site is kid-friendly so if you're easily offended don't read any further.

I totally jizzed all over myself when I heard about this. 13 hours dedicated to each book - I can't f'n wait!

I have not read these books....should I?

Markwars, they're my favorite fantasy series. But they're not for everyone. Beloved characters get offed when you least expect it. Bad guys win. Good guys lose. Then good guys win, and bad guys lose. Then bad guys and good guys team up, and other bad guys and good guys lose.

Plus there is copious grown-up material. Sex is just the beginning - there's violence that would turn your stomach, horrible things happen to good people, and some seriously dark mojo. The magic is understated, but when it happens, it turns your head. And it's often rather graphic.

I absolutely love these books. But I wouldn't dive into them without a little warning - anyone can die, at any time. Don't get attached to any one character, because absolutely nobody is safe. And I mean nobody.

If you like them that much I'll give them a try. I'll either have one more reason to think you're a genius or I'll be thoroughly scared of you.

I think it'll probably be both. I had the opportunity to bask in IMax's genius at GenCon, even if for only a short time. I have this to say, his genius-ness is scary.

Oogiezone read the first book and said she really liked it but at the same time she didn't enjoy it, I'm not sure how that makes any sense, but then again she is a woman and doesn't make any sense to me to being with. She said it was a chore to read and she was really ticked when her favorite character died. The book makes her want to read the next ones but she probably won't.

I have not read these books....
I haven't yet either. But they've been on the radar for a very long time.
My reading time has gone down the toilet since I had kids.
Well, I'm reading a lot, but "Olivia" books don't count.

I'm going to get to the "Thrones" series soon, I've heard too much not too.

This series has earned every accolade it's received.

If you're tired of reading the umpteenth clone of Tolkein (I'm talking to you, Forgotten Realms, David Eddings, Raymond Feist, Robert Jordan, Terry Goodkind and Terry Brooks), then this is what you're looking for.

The best comparison I can make is imagine the movie "Excalibur" turned into a book series with a lot more political intrigue. Very gritty.

You only thought I was a genius because you didn't see me at the Ram, drunk as hell on two hours of sleep.

In real life, I'm mostly just grouchy.

Crotchety would be more like it. :D

*ducks quickly from thread.

*ducks back in to post about the topic:

I'm looking forward to this even though I don't get HBO but will pick up the DVDs (or BluRay or HD or the next flavor of the month). I've read two of the books and loved them. Gut wrenching and awesome at the same time. Great story and characters.

*ducks back out.

Newb.

Not surprisingly I am like Joah. :P Once the kids came, my reading time went down the tubes. That's probably because I prefer to pick up a book, check out of the real world, read the entire book in about 24 hours, sleep for a day, and then wake up and reflect. Now I have to read 30 minutes at a time here and there. It's just not the same.

And as for IMax's disposition....he's always a teddy bear. Unless you're a f***tard, or around other f***tards. Then he's every bit as acerbic as we all wish we could be.

Between this and Rome I will have to get HBO.
