Ok gang, I am wanting to get this project moving again. I have not had the time to do any more terrain for almost a year because of the r/l crap going on but I do want to start getting motivated again. So I am going to repost the past projects that I have done, and then start finishing up some of the ones collecting dust. I would like if you all could give me some more "fuel" on what things you would like to see.

I would like to just say that the reason I enjoy these types of games the most is because of the "visuals". I like to make my own scenery just to enhance the over feel of the game for me. I don't paticularly like to play in an "open" field devoid of any obstacles, or landmarks. Not to mention that building terrain is my relax time for the most part and an extension of the hobby for me.

So please feel free to ask questions post a few ideas for some terrain. I will try and help you all as much as possible along the way if you are interested in making any of these things yourself just ask. I hope to hear from you! :)

Also, I do have a website if you would like to check it out. The contents of which will pretty much be posted here as well.

Another note! I am going to be finishing up a crypt here soon to put on ebay to sell for Heroscapers. So you will have a chance to get one and benefit this site as well. So keep your eyes peeled for that. I just have to get it done.

Here are some lifters I made. I made these out of dow cut to fit underneath the hex tiles.

To break it down the pieces are equvilent to the following
24 hex tile = approx 72-96 hexes high!
7 hex tile = approx 21-28 hexes high!
2 hex tile = approx 6 -8 hexes high !
5 hex tile = approx 15-20 hexes high!

These help to build higher when you are short some tiles. :) We have 5 master sets so far and we are still finding ourselves needing more! :)

Ok, this came at the request of UD I believe. He wanted a water fall that miniatures could hide behing, and blocked line of sight. I went with just some material that matched the color of the hex tiles. The material can be cut in different lengths and easily tucked under the hex tiles to hold it into place. I through a couple cotton balls down to add some foam. Simple and quick, and very effective.

Ok, here are some stock buildings I made.
I call them stock because they can be made into different types of buildings. I can add a steeple for a church, a sign out front for a bar. (I wanted to make a Ninthdocs Tavern.. still might). There are a number of things you can do to these buildings. You can even attach them to make a larger building. Anyway, here are some of the stock buildings.

I wanted to make a two hexed wide stone bridge. These come in pretty useful for a lot of our games and we can save our tiles for short walls. Here are some pics of the stone bridges. These could have been painted in brown to greay, these are all grey.

I hear so much about the well springs but hasbro doesn't make any. :( I wanted to make a well spring to match up with some of the different armies represented in HS. Hopefully you enjoy.

Here is the first one, It is a universal Stone Hedgeish well spring. I like it. :)

Lil newbie wanted this hedge. Perhaps to go with Einer a bit. I like the way this turned out and it some pieces you can lock in, or take out depending on how you want to use it. i was thinking the entrance of a cave would look pretty cool.

The Marro are just sweet in my opinion, of course I have always been a sucker for monsters. This here is a bone hedge that could be put around a well spring for the Utgar army. These are great objectives for a game!

Imax is the king of dice towers as far as I am concerned. I did want to make my own however.. how could I resist? They are great fun! I wanted to make one that would fit in to the rest of my terrain for HS and be a part of the table and the action!

Here is what I came up with.

Ok, this is one of the larger pieces I did for HS. HEH drew up an awesome picture of it for the Codex. That looked amazing! I wanted to make a building that the scape figs could fight in. (mind you this was before castle sets). The one story and two story buildings really did not give me a lot of room to play with, so I went with something much much larger. I decided to make an Utgar crypt. It is pretty cool I think. There is plenty of room for battle inside and outside the crypt. I would love to do another large scape building like this... perhaps a pyramid... hmm.

I think it's "office depot" name is insulation board. It is sold to insulate more northern homes underneath the siding. If i recall you can only get the 1" down in the southern states. Where we can get 2" and more here in the north.

For the most part it is compressed styrfoam. It doesn't leave little white beads all over, and it is flexible and easier to cut to the size you want.

Ideas, (Since you asked):
...Rock Bridges
...Other Henges: Trees/vines for Ullar, Tech for Vydar, Pagoda style for Einar
...Docks / Boat Launches :)
...Portals similar to one used on Stargate
...Loose Boulders, sort of round that can be pushed or used as barricades
...Buildings with Balconies for Ranged guys to get a perch :D

I don't have any made right now and I would rather trade then sell. Tradeing is soooo much more fun and it is more motivation to me then money. Just so you know. This is my "relax" time doing these. :)

Insulation board i what I use too. I've just never heard it called dow.

What do you use to cut it to get those nice lines. I use a hot wire cutter which makes a nice textured look but those seem like they were cut with something else.

bad_calvin
January 16th, 2007, 08:06 PM
I use a knife to cut with. Sometimes I use my buddies band saw. Depending on what I am building I use textured paint, filler, sand, glue, stones, rock and boogers. Whatever works for what I am wanting it to look like. :)

The risers could easily be painted white. :)
The thing is though is their are no large snow tiles. So they would all have to be small ones.

I could always make a really large snow moutain, that fits unto an existing map. :)

Not sure I have anything to trade but would love one of those curved bridges. A) what are you looking for in trade.

and/or

B) could you post instructions on how to make?

A- I will post when I have made some extras of the stuff you see here. Right now I have nothing made up. :) Most of the time I will just trade for random miniatures or HS commons. I like comics, movies, etc just like the next guy. I make these for the fun of it, and to see others enjoying them so it's not a big deal.

B- I would like to post instructions like Grimshak does, but I really don't have the time for it. i would suggest checking out terragenesis.com for some great how to's. You can probably figure it out from there. If you need help though, i can answer questions for you on technique, and such. Not a problem! :)

My biggest suggestion for making terrain is to look around your house. Even take a look at some of the stuff you throw away! It is amazing what kind of things you can make from trash. :) Cereal boxes, plastic containers and etc have potential to be other things when some paint and imagination are applied. :)

Hi Bad_Calvin

very nice and creative stuff. :D CityScape is an impressive collection and must have been quite a lot of work to build all that http://home.arcor.de/fellechner/smilies/jo.gif

I want to ask you something about this bridge...

.. as i´m planning to build an arc bridge similar to yours and you wrote that you have already used the stone bridge in a lot of games:

- Is the curved surface a problem, does 2 hex figures wobble to much on it? I seem it´s a problem to place them on a ground tile and the first bridge tile? (last picture)

- How do you determine height difference/levels, as there are no steps on the bridge, do you assume the bridge spaces are all on the same level?

Thanks for your thoughts/solutions on that, it would help me with the bridge i´m working on.

Bye, Chicano.

Yep, I like the way it looks and having it two hexes wide allows you to have a brawl on it.

- Is the curved surface a problem, does 2 hex figures wobble to much on it? I seem it´s a problem to place them on a ground tile and the first bridge tile? (last picture)

Sometimes yes. When I made mine I tried to put a "half" hex at the bottom so that the first step (if it was steep) could still be used by putting the miniature on the ground level of it before they "step" up into it. Some of the miniatures do slide a little so i put some "moss" on it to help steady them.

- How do you determine height difference/levels, as there are no steps on the bridge, do you assume the bridge spaces are all on the same level?
We actaully "eye it" . It is easy enough to see if the mini is higher or lower. the bridge is not so tall that no miniature would be able to not shoot them. But no Melee takes place "over" the edges.
I try and cut a little bit of an angle out of it as well to take away some of the steepness. There are problems from time to time depending on the miniature, but nothing that you can't deal with it when playing amongst friends.

Thanks for your thoughts/solutions on that, it would help me with the bridge i´m working on.

No problem, and if I was not clear let me know. Thanks for looking!
BTW. I really like your bridges too !

What material did you make the bridge out of?

If you ever make more I definitely would be interested in trading. I have HS stuff, games, books, etc.

The bridge was made out of thick cardboard for the walls, insulation board for the floor, thin cardboard for the stones, wall spackle for small stones and texture, and of course paint to not look ugly.

it just takes time man. :)
Start of by painting your project all one color. lets say for this "black".
then take the black paint and add a little white to it, to make it a dark grey. Then drybrush it over the black (not to dry, but not so wet it is dripping. be sure to go in the same direction). Then add a little more white to it making a grey color drybrush that. Then a little more, and a little more until you are happy with it.
