View Full Version : Marvel HS delayed at my Wal-Mart

I work midnights so after work at 7:30 I always stop at WM to see if there's any new HS. This morning I went and when I looked down the aisle I saw the Masters and the pile of Thora's and nothing else. However, four of the boosters had been turned with the flat side facing the spot where MarvelScape was to go.

I went to check it out and saw that the tag for M-Scape had been removed. Alarmed at this I searched the toy section and found no tag. I asked the two employees and they said the were deleting items. M-Scape had been deleted and the associates said when that happens it may be a few MONTHS before the item comes to WM! One said my best bet now would be TRU.

I haven't checked the other WMs in the area but I am tonight. Go around to your WMs and see if that has happened there.

:(
That kind of explains what I saw this morning.
The WM on the westside of town, that had a Marvel sticker had been replaced with a Tower expansion sticker.

Methinks this is not good.

Well, it's par for the course. They don't want any kind of NEW product in their store that would sell well. They would rather wait 6 months and then toss around the idea of carrying a by then old product.

Two days ago I decided that I was going to buy MarvelScape after seeing it for $25 on the shelf tag. Now, they aren't going to carry it?! I hate Wal-Mart like I hate the plague.

Its probably the "Civil War" that's happening in the Marvel Universe right now. That can shake up a lot of things. Wave Six sightings for one, shelf stickers, ...I'm pretty sure it pushed back the latest in the Harry Potter saga too.
Made me late for work the other day.

But the thing that bothers me is that this game is all but invisible. There are no mentions of it on hasbro.com, heroscape.com or any of the retailers that carry heroscape. There are no photos other than the ones taken at GenCon of the display model. There are no box images or logos anywhere. All mentions of it on any blog sites are months old.

The possibilities are 1) it's coming any time to WalMart's shelves and Hasbro is just not doing the job when it comes to advertising it. 2) There hasn't been enough interest in the product by the people who make the buying decisions, possibly based on the large number of Marvel games already, causing the project to be cancelled. 3) There are delays caused by the plastic regulations overseas as has been mentioned in other threads. 4) Marvel wants more money. 5) They're delaying the product until Spiderman 3 comes out... with both Venom and Spidey in the game AND the movie the marketing genii are going to keep the game off the shelves until close to summer so they can cross-promote.

I'm betting it's option 5.

Or it could be a fiendish plot... the Latverian customs agents have confiscated all the shipments... Look for Marvel Legends Heroscape to appear on eBay starting at $60 a set by the seller VvonD.

ej, The Hasbro website being extremely behind the times is nothing new. I'm dying for more info myself, but sadly you most likely won't find it there. When it's time, Hasbro will release something to announce it.

I noticed that Hasbro's Marvel Legends action figures are just hitting the stores, so maybe its just a delay with Hasbro's transition of Marvel's toy line from Toy Biz. Since the Marvelscape game seems to be carrying the "Legends" tag, maybe Hasbro wanted to push the action figures, before they decide to release the game. Heck if I know.

Isn't that about when wave 7 will come out?

Man, I wish they could space this stuff out better, it really kills the wallet this way. Like when the castles came out at the same time as wave 5.

I know, I should just set the money aside now until March, but I just don't function that way

Well when I bought wave 6 at Wal-Mart this weekend the product was still not in their system (the clerk had to manually input product title and price). So I don't think Wal-Mart knows when they are getting it.

Any word from Sandra about this game?

I PMed Sandra about this and here is her response.

According to my Hasbro rep, the licensing agreement prevents any sales, including pre-sales, prior to March 24. I don't know if March 24 is the projected release date, but I suspect the release date will be close to the March 24 date.

Really? That late, huh? Interesting. I thought the original report we got was that Hasbro was going to start selling Marvel items in January...
According to a Hasbro press release, the five-year license gives Hasbro the rights to release Marvel-based products beginning Jan. 1, 2007...
Perhaps that has changed since the news was released last year.

I believe Sandra 100%, but that's very odd info and I wonder if the source was wrong to tell her that. The new Hasbro Marvel Legends figures are already on the shelf, as are the Marvel version of Galactic Heroes, Spider-Man Operation, Titanium Marvel Characters, and on and on. Why would the Marvel Legends Heroscape be under some separate contract? We got a huge surge of Hasbro Marvel stuff since January 1st....wtf is up with Heroscape being special? And why would Wal-Marts and K-Marts alot shelf space for something that's not coming out for over two more months? Alotting shelf space for something that's coming out in a week or two or three makes sense....two months? Not so much. Tney've never done that before, at least to my knowledge...Castle shelf space was only a couple weeks in advance of the release.

I seem to recall Sandra's source giving her bad info before. Maybe Sandra can shed light on that but I vaguely remember her being given dates that didn't mesh with what actually happened.

Maybe there was a delay. They put up the stickers, thinking Mervelscape would be coming out soon, but something happened and it's being pushed back until March. It's a stretch, but makes some sense.

Here is a short article about the Marvel Heroscape delay:

http://www.boardgamenews.com/index.php/boardgamenews/comments/marvel_heroscape_on_the_horizon/

Basically, the article suggests that the game needs more playtesting before release.

True, an official delay would be understandable, but the reason given to Sandra for that delay makes little to no sense. That's what I was getting at. If Marvel Hasbro products can't be sold until March how are they already on the shelf? See what I mean?

AgentX's article sheds some light, assuming it's facts are in line. Additional playtesting (perhaps to make sure the game is 100% compatible? hope hope hope) is a perfectly sensible reason for a product delay until the date Sandra was given. An additional two-plus months of testing would be reasonable.

I think the delay is not as simple as play testing issues...I believe the problem is that for those who shelled out the $40 when MS first came out got their money's worth with 30 figures and all of the terrain.

From all we have heard MarvelScape was going to be a scaled down game. Now if Hasbro did any sort of research on boards such as this they would know that we would buy it up as soon as it hit the shelves....but there is a whole market of people who don't play HS who they need to target and thats the problem.

Who do you include in the initial MS? Who do you leave out? What will the Marvel purists think? This is what delays every Marvel Live Action Movie's release so it is only fitting the same happens for a game.

It's been designed seperately from HS, so sadly it will be compatible as Hasbro has mentioned before, but it won't make sense in terms of the power scale of Marvel figs mixing with traditional figs. Just a guess.

Something doesn't seem right with this. I wouldn't think that a game gets this close to release, shelves marked at walmart, with playtest issues. Aren't those the types of issues that delay printing?

There has been talk on different threads here about PVC content or lead being used in the paint of Heroscape figures. If found, the material is rejected. That to me would seem to be a more likely cause for a 3 month delay at this point in time.

Discalimer: Of course, that's all speculation on my part

The design team is probably taking the opportunity to learn from the mistakes of the interesting but overly complicated Marvel Heroes game. They would also do well to take a good long look at the extremely creative power combos of Capes & Cowls. Both these games were released at about the same time Marvel Heroscape was supposed to have been released.

Just checked my Wal-Mart tonight. The tags, which had been up for a few weeks, are now gone.

So something is definitely going on. My guess is that it's been canceled (can a non-random game even make it to the market these days? Especially now that WotC's hands are in it? Hope I'm wrong...)

I'm pretty sure it's not canceled. Considering Heroscape's history of delays for one reason or another, my bet is we will see this in a few months.

I severely doubt it. They seemed to be near finished with it aesthetically at GenCon last year; I doubt they would toss that all out the window. Its a possibility, but... a one in a million chance.

It's rough not knowing what's going on. I really hope we're told as much as possible as soon as possible. Like I said in a thread or two a while back, it's BECAUSE Marvelscape was coming out soon that my daughter and I started playing Heroscape in the first place. I'd hate to think that some high muckity-muck decided that there were already enough Marvel games on the shelves and axed it.

I'm working in a brand new wal-mart that opens this monday(22nd). We're going so far to open with zero holes that we're actually taking product from other wal-marts. However, we still don't have Marvelscape.

If we can't get it, no wal-mart is going to get it. Game is deffenitly delayed.

Hasbro customer service and WotC both say they have no information on the product. Remember, you are only going to get in contact with a front line rep...not designers, not marketing, not legal. It's not in the system, so the CS reps know nothing about the product.

My WalMart's tags are gone as well. The delayed release combined with Hasbro's history of ponderously re-supplying Walmarts with Heroscape product (wave 6 anyone?) ='s the shelf-space being used for something WalMart can actually stock. Can't say I blame them.
