View Full Version : Custom Human Plank Bridge - done =)

Hi Scaper!
I made a little wood Bridge for HS (my first custom terrain :) )
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/21_bridge.jpg
Thanks for your advice & ideas :) Here are some step by step images:
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/01_bridge.jpg
first i placed some small wood pieces to make the bridge snap on the hexes.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/02_bridge.jpg
glue three wood pieces as base on the edges.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/03_bridge.jpg
Place the little plankes on the base sticks to check spacing.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/05_bridge.jpg
Glue them, but not yet the edges, as they will be hexshaped and cutted before glueing and left some spaces, these will be planked later...
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/06_bridge.jpg
Time to check if the bridge snaps onto the hexes in each directions, yep :)
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/07_bridge.jpg
On a little height.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/08_bridge.jpg
The black rope.
Next steps:
- Brush the wood into a darker brown tone.
- Make more of the little poles to hold a black rope on each side.
- Some more eyecandy, to make it more heroscape-ish... not sure yet what it could be... any ideas? thx!
ok... second round ;)
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/09_bridge.jpg
missing poles and planks are ready and i think iīm gonna use that spit :)
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/10_bridge.jpg
one side ready.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/11_bridge.jpg
structure ready! now iīm going to paint it, so that the woods gets darker, weathered like Dennys said.
Third Round... Paintjob =) Well not yet the Kroot Warrior, but the Bridge (-:
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/12_bridge.jpg
Does it look good? mmmh, to late to change the color anyway... :P

really looks a bit like old wood now.:)
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/16_bridge.jpg
I put the ring screws on one side again to check the rope. the black rope is 4mm this one is thinner, 2mm.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/17_bridge.jpg
Thinner rope hangs down a bit between the poles that looks good, black rope doesnīt... Perhaps it will be the golden one, letīs see...
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/18_bridge.jpg
So i think this is the last round on this Bridge, there wasnīt missing much, just... The Rope:
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/19_bridge.jpg
a bit of weight to make the rope hang down a bit between the poles.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/20_bridge.jpg
itīs done =)

Hey by the way, those figures? Nah, they couldn't be....could they?
Are those the Kroot warriors from the glyph contest?

I agree.
Ch1can0, would it be possible to bulid two sections, and make it where they slide into each other? That way you could make it "stretch" longer and shorter? I hope I am explaining well what I mean, but if you were to build two pieces that would make one hell of a long (but compact) bridge for varying terrain.

WONDERFUL!!!
Very great idea.
Question: the two "semihex" piece are build by you? so you have cutted/shaped/glued 3 little wood pieces?
About make it more HSish :D i think you should not paint it TOO MUCH realistic. Give it the aspect of a piece of plastic with a " fake wood toy paint" and you're in HS style :)
Very beautiful :)

You could splinter some of the cross planks, make holes, making it look old and weathered.
Optionally, a trap door?

... yes :) and thanks again! Actually the blisters lay around quite a while and i decided to assemble and paint them. In the hobby store i saw some wood pieces so i had the idea with the bridge. The kroots arenīt finished yet, but i think the minis are really cool and the size fits well for heroscape. Then the bridge is done i will finish the paintjob on the kroots and make them hs custom.

interesting idea! But i think that would be pretty tricky to build with wood. I should have considered it from start on, but perhaps on the next bridge!

Thank you parduz =) yes, the semihex are made by me, itīs really no big deal, you could place some matches in the gaps between the hexes and then glue something on it, ready :)

Old and weathered, sounds good, i hope that the paint i choose will give that effect. A Trap Door.. mmh, tricky i canīt make it on this one, perhaps the next!

If the finished bridge looks good, perhaps i make some other. First i thought of general-themed bridges, but the themes arenīt to... different i think perhaps i will try it with races, to make an orcish bridge, an evlish bridge and one metal painted soulborg bridge. perhaps +1 defence for figures standing on their bridges..
But now iīm going to paint this one... see ya later scaper... ;)

The Kroots look fantastic. If I had kept them, they'd most likely still be in the box unpainted, unassembled. Glad you're getting use out of them!
Again, the bridge is really nice. I like the half-hex bases the bridge ends rest on. Great idea. The black rope is a nice touch and I keep envisioning the bridge with a few poles and overhanging lanterns.

As far as spaces, the area between the poles looks like 1 space each.
Looks really good. Only other option is to cut the ends of the decking sticks of in a hex like zig-zag to match the hex grain, but prefer it natual like you made it.
No way to make it expandable, but you CAN make it modular.
Take the stringers under the deck, and have one set (left) wide, second set (right) narrower to slide insde the left ones. Drill holes in all 4 stringers 1 hex width apart. That way you can expand the stringers and use a toothpick or a thin wire to secure the correct length.
Now, make decking universal 1 hex wide pieces that have 4 cut semistringers under them.. 2 wider than the left main stringers, 2 narrower than the 2 right. That way they can interlock with any length bridge. Have the modular decking already have the posts on them, so you can just thread the rope after its built.
That is an awseome bridge, great work.

Incredible work! I am very impressed with the results so far...I agree with weathering the screw eyes a bit, and also I wonder if you could give the bright yellow rope a black wash.
How hard to you think it would be to make a bridge with an arc? Like the type of bridge you would see in a Zen garden. Not too much arc, otherwise the figures would slide off unless you could coat the wood with something that would provide traction for the bases of the figures.

The bridge covers 5 spaces, between each poles is one space as dennys wrote. If you see the bridge on the beattlefield itīs clear enough i think. I will test it, should work without extra marks. On a bigger bridge iīm planning, i think i will make some kind of mark.

Hi and thanks for the suggestions :) That is a nice bridge with the arc. I think iīm going to try to make a bridge like that. There should be arcs on the outside, but kind of a flat stairway up and down on the inside, there the figures are placed. Otherwise the figures would wobble on the curved ground, what do you think?!? http://home.arcor.de/fellechner/smilies/gruebel.gif ...need to test it :)

teekay, parduz nice to read the comments from so creative scapers. =)
The Popsicles... I saw them in a hobby store and those gave me the idea of making a hs bridge. Actually those are called "mini craft sticks" and are 5.5cm long so they fit well for a 1 hex wide bridge. I realy didnīt thought about cutting off all the tips, but i would have been too lazy anyway. ;-) For the next bridge i think i will use different sticks.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/sticks.jpg
The missing Hexmarks: The Bridge is one hex wide and 5 hex long. Between each pole is a hexspace. I donīt really think that placing could be an issue while gaming but i will check it out. The next bridge iīm planning will be bigger and i will mark the hexes on that one, thanks for the suggestions!
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/22_bridge.jpg
The Arc Bridge... The bridge will be 2-hex wide, that will help placing of the doublehex figures. I think stairs at the inside would fit better to hs than a curved surface, for playability and game rules...
Here is the basic layout of the bridges iīm planning, on the left actual bridge, on the right a bigger one, 2 hexes wide, 6 hexes long with some kind of crowīs nest attached to the bridge and at the bottom the arc bridge.

Here is the undersid of the bridge. I used standard sized popcicle sticks (bought 1000 craft sticks at wlamart for less than 4 bucks).
The entire bridge save the pillars and the 2 end pieces is craft sticks.
I chose to paint my pridge a dirty brown with a bit of a black wash. Enjoy.

EUREAKA!!!!!! I've found an alternative to "paining" bridges. since the ones I built are just prototypes right now. I made my variant of the Human Bridge AND I found out w/ a bit of experamenting that I can use my PrismaColor Markers (which are alchohol-based NOT water-based like Crayola markers). The Color seems to absorb into the wood. Only thing is these markers are about $1 - $3 roughly. (I'm not sure since i haven't bought any in awhile). SO, Ch1can0, try those for next time.
Oh and as where to find them, any craft place that also sells art(drawing supplies) 'should' have them. (Pat Catan's where I live). So have fun experamenting.
