Greetings all -- this is my first post here on Scapers.com. I bought the game for Christmas for my son (age 5), obviously thinking it was very cool myself but also hoping I could ease him in with the Basic Rules and eventually work our way to the Master Rules. Well it took less than one day for him to whip me not only in the Basic game but in the Master Rules as well. He loves the game and I am pleased with the additional bonuses of geometry and spatial relation when he sets up battlefields, and the addition and subtraction with the dice rolls and various adjustments (which he rarely misses, once he learns the 1st time). Needless to say we have expanded -- with the RttFF and the Raknar's set as well, not to mention the Swog/Knights, Heroes of Bleakwoode, and Ninjas/Samurai!

Anyway, last night my daughter (8 1/2) joined us for her first game. I built a new battle field, set out 4 glyphs face down and decided to track it for our first "recorded" game. (Crossing fingers...this is my 3rd try inserting the pics...)

We settled on 400 point armies (with Dad obviously helping on the addition here) Our armies...

Dad's:
Grimnak
Raelin
Agent Carr
KM Agents

Son's (BigW):
Braxas
Thorgrim
Theracus
Knights

Daughter's (SuperS):
Mimring
Venoc Warlord (affectionately known as "Slither" by my son)
Kelda
Swog
Dumutef

My army prepares for battle...

Another shot of the board, showing my perspective, the glyphs, the mtns., and the bridge.

Turn 1
The battle began and I had the initiative. Rd. 1 - I headed toward the road with Grimnak, while SuperS ran th Swog toward the bridge. Big W ran Thorgrim toward the glyph on the small rocks behind the ruin.

Rd. 2 - I moved the agents toward the large mtn. in the middle, while she smartly sent the Swog up the bridge, securing the glyph - a +1 Attack. My son had the Knights selected, so he got to move Thorgrim, who made it to the foot of the glyph hill he had been seeking. He then broke the Knights in two and sent one on the road and one toward the glyph on the grass hill.

Rd 3 - Ralein moved to the center, Venoc slithered toward the sand hill glyph, and Braxas flew toward the bridge.

Turn 2
Rd. 1 -- My daughter won initiative and took the sand hill glyph (Range +4) with Venoc. My son sent Thorgrim up to take the ruin hill glyph (+2 Move). My Agents moved around the lake and fired on Slither - 2 hits! -- and missed the Swog on the bridge.

Rd. 2 - Mimring and the Knights race toward the grass hill glyph, while my Raelin flies to the top of the snow mtn and wins the Lucky 20-side glyph.

Rd 3 - Kelda moves to support Venoc, while BigW sends Braxas onto the bridge and sizzles the Swog with a devastating attack.

This shows the race for the grass hill glyph, after the Swog was fried.

Here's Venoc and the Agents battling it out, with Raelin on the mountain. Swoggie is enjoying his last few minutes in Valhalla.

Turn 3
Rd 1 - I win initiative. Grimnak uses the road to his advantage, moving to the bridge and immediately Chomps a hapless Knight, who had ventured too close. BigW moves one Knight up on the bridge to take the +1 Att. glyph, while his other 2 Knights win the grass hill (which would prove the be key) and secure the +2 Def. glyph. Kelda heals Venoc with a clutch roll and then kills an agent on her attack.

Rd. 2 - The Agents turn their fire to Kelda, tagging two hits. My son brings Theracus forth, drawing a blank when he attacks Grimnak. SuperS uses Mimring's fire breath on the Knights, but their height advantage, coupled with the +1 Def glyph, prove to be too much.

Rd. 3 - My Agent Carr moves toward the mountain, fires at Braxas on the bridge, but misses. My son flies Braxas off the bridge to confront Grimnak, scoring 2 hits with a normal attack. My daughter sends the Dumutef toward the bridge.

Braxas tries to melt Grimnak...
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10244/normal_PICT0016b.JPG

Turn 4
Rd 1 - Son wins initiative and attacks Grimnak again with Braxas - no dice. SuperS follows with another attack from Mimring on the entrenched Knights -- nada. I send Agent Carr to the foot of the bridge and miss Theracus with a ranged attack.

Rd. 2 - Theracus misses Grimnak -- I was rolling solid defense at this point. SuperS sends the Dumutef to the bridge and wastes no time in killing the Knight on the glyph. Two of my KM Agents fire on the Dumutef and miss. The other Agent moves to higher ground and holds his fire.

Rd. 3 - Big W's Knights attack back on Mimring, and they whiff. Kelda moves higher on the sand hill, attacks an Agent, but misses. Grimnak moves toward Thorgrim, avoids the "swipe" (which is what we call the disengage dice), and misses the Chomp. He attacks, tallying 1 hit.

Action on the Venoc/Agents/Kyrie front...
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10244/normal_PICT0018b.JPG

Turn 5
Rd 1 - My son takes the initiative and flies Theracus to the bridge, attacking Agent Carr and missing. SuperS flies Kelda to the mountaintop and attacks Raelin but misses. Agent Carr ghost walks to the bridge glyph, beating the Dumutef to it. He turns to attack Theracus and locks in the kill with a devastating 7 skulls vs. 0 shields.

Kyrie faceoff...
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10244/normal_PICT0001e.JPG

At this point things look bad for BigW, with two Knights and Theracus dead. However, the game was far from over...

Rd 2 - Thorgrim gets a hit on Grimnak, leaving him with 2 remaining. Mimring blows smoke again instead of fire, as the Knights will not budge from the grassy hill. Grimnak puts the Chomp on Thorgrim...his spirit lives on with the Knights.

Rd. 3 - The Knights counter with two successful hits on Mimring. Venoc realizes that the +4 Range glyph he is holding is worthless to a melee army and slides down the hill to engage an Agent, but whiffs his attack. Two Agents then combine their fire to kill Venoc, making his decision to leave the hill a fatal one.

Turn 6
Rd 1 - My hot hand with the dice continues as I win initiative. Agent Carr turns on the bridge and shreds the Dumutef Guard with one fell swoop -- 5 skulls to 3 shields. (In the last two turns, my army had laid waste to Thorgrim, Theracus, "Slither" and the Dumutef Guard. Impressive dice rolling...but alas it would not last.) Kelda attacked an Agent below her, but missed. Braxas flies to the base of the mtn. beside the bridge and unleashes her Acid breath attack -- missing Kelda and Raelin, but frying one of my KM Agents.

Rd 2 - Grimnak heads toward the bridge. Mimring gives up on the Knights, survives the "swipe" and settles at the foot of the bridge. Her fire breath attack misses Grimnak. Braxas moves into position and Acid attacks again, but misses Agent Carr, Raelin and Kelda.

Rd 3 - My last Agent moves to the sand (+4 Range) glyph and fires a blank at Braxas, who is now asserting herself with all her power and who has yet to suffer a wound. My daughter had selected the Dumutef, who's now DOA. BigW's Knights stay on their +1 Def glyph, content with their moral victory over Mimring. The last Knight boldly (foolheartedly?) moves toward Grimnak.

http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10244/normal_PICT0005e.JPG

Turn 7
Rd 1- My son gets initiative and Braxas wastes no time in killing Kelda. Mimring attacks Grimnak from the bridge but the Chomper rolls 3 shields vs. 3 skulls to cheat death. Grimnak then moves to Chomp the Knight near the bridge.

Rd 2 - Braxas special attacks again with her Acidity, but misses. Kelda was chosen by SuperS, but is DOA. Agent Carr moves off the glyph to the edge of the bridge to attack Mimring -- whiff.

Rd 3 - The Knights -- they stay put on the +4 Def glyph. My daughter flies Mimring over Agent Carr, onto the bridge glyph and attacks -- 1 hit.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10244/normal_PICT0006d.JPG
Raelin stays put on the summit.

Turn 8
Rd 1 - BigW wins initiative, and Braxas applies the coup de grace to my hopes here, wasting both a KM Agent AND Agent Carr with her Acid Attack. OUCH. My round marker -- Agent Carr. DOA. Mimring attacks from the base of the bridge and torches Grimnak. Braxas and Mimring have turned the tide against me after things had looked so promising earlier.

Braxas presides over another kill....
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10244/normal_PICT0026a.JPG

Rd 2 - Braxas misses Raelin. Grimnak for me? DOA. Mimring turns his wrath toward Braxas, but misses his attack.

Rd 3 - Braxas misses Raelin again. My Agents? DOA. Mimring moves to the mountain and tallies a hit on Raelin.

Turn 9
Rd 1 - BigW is on a roll, winning initiative for thr third straight turn. Braxas puts me out of my misery, killing Raelin. My turn with Raelin? DOA. Mimring moves up to the summit, but misses his shot at Braxas.

The final battle, complete with shot of BigW preparing to finish Mimring off...
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10244/normal_PICT0028a.JPG

Rd 2 - Braxas kills Mimring with her regular attack from below!
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10244/normal_PICT0030a.JPG

GAME OVER! My son wins again...with two Knights and Braxas left on the board! I think we're gonna like this game...

Now, which expansion do we want next? Hmm....

Welcome to the boards, SpainKiller!

On behalf of our battle reporting and family friendly community I extend to you a laurel and a hearty handshake.

What fun! I loved reading the write up and feeling the flow. I can hardly wait until my kids are a bit older - as of yet they are merely 'Scapers in training. It is delightful to see another proud dad on the board.

Cool battle report. Loved the pics, especially that ominous one of Braxas looking down on the felled KM agent.

Just for future reference, I believe Thorgrim's spirit can only live on on Unique cards (like a hero or a unique squad like Ninja's or the MS squads). I may have to double check on that, but I'm pretty sure it can't be used on the Knights.

That's right, it only works on uniques. I was doing the same darn thing on my knights until someone corrected me. It's easy to make that mistake when you get so used to being able to drop the Spirit on everything in the master set.

Awesome report and pics! Welcome to the site.

One thing to note is there are 3 Turns to a Round. This becomes important for certain abilities.

Great 1st post.

Awesome first post. I've said it before, but I love the battle reports with pictures. I've got to try to do it more myself.

Great report. I've never seen Braxas so useful, whenever I use her she falls like a ton of bricks, coughing up nary a speck of acid.

Yes nice report. Also, and this has been mentioned, but you did three rounds to a turn, when it is really three turns to a round. One question though, what does DOA mean?

LilNewbie

DOA=Dead On Arrival

Appears he means the unit with the marker could not activate that turn since all the figures were dead before they could go.

Wow... what a way to make an entrance! Great pics and a great report!

As far as what set to buy next, I'd go for Orm's Return (http://www.hasbro.com/heroscape/default.cfm?page=ormsReturn). This being the other large heroes expansion pack released the same time as 'Road to the Forgotten Forest'. Good bang for your buck, and large heroes make for dice rolling in large numbers, which is always fun for the kids. :D

I enjoyed putting the writeup together almost as much as I enjoyed playing the game with my kids.

And thanks for the helpful tip on Thorgrim -- one more thing to tell my son. He'll probably correct me on it next time we use Thorgrim!

The round/turn thing is probably a holdover from my D&D days WAYYY back in the day. My bad.

LilNewbie was right DOA is Dead On Arrival, meaning I couldn't use those players that I had scheduled for their turns with markers at the beginning of the round. (Hope I got the whole round/turn thing right there -- that may take me awhile).

Welcome to the site and great report. I have a question though. At the start of turn 3
you say kelda killed one of your agents. Then in round 2 of the next turn you say two agents
fired on Dumutef and 1 moved to higher ground. If you already lost 1 agent you should only have had 2 not 3.

Omega
January 10th, 2007, 08:12 AM
Probably one of the two moved to higher ground and then they both fired at Dumutef. Just a thought.

I think Omega is right, I'll have to check my notes at home. Wow, good catch -- you guys are observant!

Wow, ages 5 & 8 and they already have a firm grip on the advanced game. My 7 yo is no where near ready for advanced. He understands all of the principles of the adv rules but his reading ability just isn't up to the challange of going through the all the special powers. And I'm not quite ready to tackle expaining 100 cards to him over and over. As for my 5 yo, his main contribution has been hauling Nilfhiem around in his favorate dumptruck!

Where did you buy your kids from? I think I need to take mine back and get the upgraded version.

Thanks -- I have been surprised at how quickly my son (5) has caught on to the Master rules as well. Obviously he can't read, so what I've done is explain the rules and powers to him. It's amazing the memory he has -- all I have to do is tell him once and he has like total recall. Even calls me on stuff I forget. I also try to make it fun for him -- like explaining the attack dice when leaving engagement as a "swipe" and acting it out.

He also gets a huge kick out of "flicking" a figure once its been killed. He loves that and I let him do it virtually any time a player goes down.

We played the Basic rules first so he could grasp the ideas of movement, range, attack and defense. After a few games, we moved on to the Master rules but used small armies -- which allowed him to get experience with a few figures and their powers at a time. Hell, we were both learning the game together. If we forgot something -- like engagement attacks or a special power -- we would just talk about it so we'd remember in the future.

Now that we've expanded with some waves and the RTTFF, we've learned a step at a time. Like anything else with kids, it's had its ups and downs -- but he knows it's "just a game" and its something we have fun with.

I should have another "battle report" up soon with pics from a recent evening's entertainment.
