Can't wait to see what they do with it but hopefully the price isn't outrageous since Black Industries is the RPG arm of The Black Library which is the Book and CCG arm of Games Workshop. (So many arms and so little time) :D

I'm fairly excited. I used to love Talisman, and introduced many non-gamers to it with success. Since then I've turned to Return of the Heroes for that kind of fix, but I will watch this with great interest.

I would love to get the game, but if they charge more then $50 for it, they can stick it where the sun don't shine. They have a nack for taking the value of a product.. doubling it and then adding a little more to top it off. I wrote off GW and all those associated with them many years ago.

But the game IS awesome! :)

The last re-release of Talisman third edition (couple years ago) was priced somewhere between $50 and $75 dollars. I got lucky and found it for $35 at a game store that really didn't realize what they had. I just hope this newest incarnation follows along the lines of version 2 mechanics more than version 3. I guess I will find out later this year when I add yet another selection with version 4 to my ever growing Talisman collection!

Good deal. I'll look at it, maybe buy it, who knows. I'll probably still stick with my 2nd edition though. I would LOVE if they brought back the 2nd edition art.

This sounds cool. Talisman takes a lot of flak, but I always enjoyed it. I hope they come out with the expansions as well. Some new sculpts of the minis would be nice also, but I have a feeling that we'll get the same ones, not that that's a bad thing. I could probably paint some of them much better a second time around.

That is what kills me. They will want $25+ for a miniature and a card and call it an add-on.

dam them for making such a fun game. :)

Hopefully, Black Library will treat the fans better this time around. They've done pretty good with the new version of WFRP, so I have hope that the expansions will be more like the boxed expansions with more cards, a map tile and 4-6 new characters rather than just an overpriced character.

Now if they'd just get the OK to release an updated Warhammer Quest...

I'm hoping the newer version is updated and doesn't suffer from some of the drawbacks of the older versions. The older game could drag since it is a roll-and-move and sometimes no one would land on the spaces they needed but I enjoyed the game at that time. Part of the fun was the group of people playing in the game. It hasn't aged well compared to some of the other great adventure games out there (Descent, WHQ, etc.) Here is hoping that the newer version will address these issues.

Talisman holds a specail place for me since it was the game that got me into much better games along the same premise such as Return of the Heroes and Runebound. It's true though that Talisman hasn't aged well and is greatly overshadowed by better games. Maybe this new edition will fix many of the issues that people have with the game, but I fear that doing so will cause it to lose much of it's original appeal and therefore lose a lot of the gamers that really like the game as is.

im wondering about the comeback i read very bad things about the 3rd version.
http://www.harris-authors.com/talisman.html

.The end of an era
A lot of games now had huge plastic pieces as their selling point rather than lots of beautifully illustrated cards. We had discussions about expanding Talisman into a series of separate games each with lots of plastic bits, but nothing came of this. In the end a large, glossy third edition was published. By the time this version had run its course, the chaps at Games Workshop were a completely different bunch from those I had dealt with at the beginning. We exchanged letters and phone calls regarding the future of the Talisman. In the end they offered me a generous sum of money to buy out my interest in the game. In the life of every creative individual there comes a time to take the money and run, so I did.

I have no idea what plans there may be for Talisman in the future, but it is difficult to believe that a game which has proved so successful all over the world will not one day return to delight a new generation of gamers.

and i want the 4th edition as all in nobody wants to wait the regular 3 expansions.

fans want 3d charackter , paint if it is possibel and many of them, cool looking cards like wow and old and new cards and some new.

maybe some more 3 like the tower in 3rd and all the good staff from the second

Two of my favorite games....I guess I'm just a shallow repetitive kinda guy :(.
I can understand that Talisman can sometimes be longwinded, but no two games I've ever played have panned out the same. It has a pretty big character pool and all the expansions add a ton of cards that you can mix right in with the main deck. Many many college nights spent playing this instead of studying.

He was supposed to be this dandy with a rapier sword. So the character was a master swordsman and could easily hit any creature no problem, but his whimpy rapier had a hard time actually causing a wound. The bad part was that his main ability allowed him to attack again if he hit but failed to wound. So when we played and somebody had the Noble we would sit there while they spent 10 minutes attacking. We would chant as the player kept rolling and it sounded like this:

I never actually played Talisman. I wanted to, but couldn't score a copy. I love dungeon games, but they can get wearisome. I played about half the quests in the basic Heroquest box before I just got tired of it seeming like the same thing, every time.

it is a cool game i like it the i has some fantasy flair.

you must only spinn a story about the monsters on the field. sure the game play ist not like has but if you pay with 8 ppl or more you have a good fantasy monopoly. and some thing like a personal hero.

not like heroquest, warhamer quest or heroquest advance, or like real p&p. the simpel battel system.

i hope the 4th will be the best have many 3 figures .

Now that I took that statement out of context, could that also not describe a battle between two low Attack/high Defense HeroScape combatants?

Anyway, one of the main reasons that Talisman has had the longevity it does is the fact that it was so easily expanded upon by fans (sound familiar?). Recently Jon New, Talisman enthusiast extraordinaire, held a four part card creation contest utilizing art from the game Dragon Masters to which I outright won two heats and a close second in another.

For anyone owning Talisman and hasn't been there lately, check out Jon New's Talisman Island (http://www.talismanisland.com/). He has collected so much information into his site it is ridiculous! He has information on the history of the game including official never released items, all different versions worldwide* and more fan created expansion than you could ever play! It also includes the Talisman song Great Adventures In Wonderland by The Tables off their album Shady Whims and Obstacles.

*Jon busted my @ss for stating I had all things Talisman in my collection. I was referring to all US expansions; of course, Jon really has all expansions from every set worldwide!

This just in from Boardgame News (http://www.boardgamenews.com/index.php/boardgamenews/comments/convention_report_new_york_toy_fair_2007_february_11_2007_day_one/), a report from Toy Fair:

Black Industries was showing off the 4th edition of Talisman, which BI rep Vince Rospond says is based on the 2nd edition of the game, to “get back to the roots of Talisman.” As such, the game includes stand-up cardboard figures instead of molded plastic ones. Rospond also said that while the company has the basis for the expansions in hand, Black Industries has no plans to release expansions for now. “We have to concentrate on getting this out first,” he says. “If this goes rah-rah, then we’ll look further.”

The new Talisman will be released on October 7th and retail for $50. The game will be available in the U.S. only through Alliance Game Distributors, which might be an issue for game stores that don’t currently order through Alliance.

Excellent news! They are indeed going with the 2nd Edition rather than the childish 3rd Edition!

Generally, 2nd Edition had a more free spirit to the game whereas 3rd was caught up in correcting every little detail so no two things contradicted themselves (I will say that second edition expansions were put out to quickly without playtesting and not by the original designer so this did become a problem). 3rd edition art was the horrible 90's GW art all skulls and bones everywhere. 3rd edition was homoginized so much that game play seemed repetative. Think about what the rule lawyers here are trying to make HeroScape into and you see what 3rd edition turned out to be! GW designed the 3rd edition for the rule lawyers and everyone knows (except the rule lawyers) that no one ever wants to play with a rule lawyer! And, this killed Talisman outright!

Interesting. And the artwork you're referring to is the product of Wayne England, a fine decorator of margins in rulebooks, but someone whose work was a bit lacking when produced on a large scale. He sure does love his evil skulls and is continuing the tradition working for WOTC now.

No figures and for $50...That's pretty pricey considering that all you're getting is a board, a few cardboard stand-ups, and something around 130 cards. Yeah, it's a GW game, so I should expect to pay more...I don't know. I've already got a copy of the game, so I'm really going to have to check it out once it's released to see if it's going to be worth it for me to pick up or just wait until the inevitable expansions come out. After all, I doubt that there will be too many changes to base game to make the expansions unplayable with my old set.

Thanks for the release info!

No the point is that the mechanic was broken so that it caused this situation each and every time the player took a turn. You could hit but rarely wound and when you didn't wound you got to roll again until you either missed (not likely) or wounded your oponent (also not likely).

G-Bob, reread the bolded text above. I do not have nor ever played the Impirial Noble from WHQ, I only have the main game (plus an extra set of monsters) and the 3 Treasure decks. I never got around to the Hero Boxes as I got in late and they are priced much like the Barbarian and the Elf Quests from HeroQuest. So, the only way I could read that statement was out of context.

Yes, I remember the Imperial Noble player would always be desperate to upgrade his gear as soon as possible. He had the sweet gun he could use a few times each battle, but oh that rapier. That mechanic was a perfect example of why rules should be fun and not be forced into matching reality.

this is the 4th edition i find it ugly. the 3rd board looks more color full. i wish the art for the 4th would be better. an advance 2nd edition . hello cgi pics.

why no plastik figures? , sure the second hat more than 400 charakters but the 3rd edition had not less figures. so we must buy the wd to become new characters.

i hope the cards art will better when the 3rd cards.

in other way if hs grows on we can use hs figures for talisman :)

The new version is based on the much more popular 2nd edition, not the third edition. The Character Pieces are indeed like the 2nd edition paper stand ups as to keep the production costs down.

i hope the expansions will came fast after the basis game.
This has yet to be confirmed at all and is one of the largest contention points. It needs to sell well, to get expansions; yet most fans do not want invest in a new version unless the expansions are confirmed. A catch-22 situation!

Warhammer Quest game (now there is one that should get the reprint)

Games-Workshop used to have a puplication called The Journal. In it, you could find all kind of player submited house rules and articals for all GW games. Even the ones GW no longer produced. Back in the early 00s, they split The Jorunal into several different magazines. One for each 'off' game they had. (40k and fantasy stuff just got moved to White Dwarf). WHQ had already had 3 of it's own books at this time.

Shortly after they split The Journal up, the big shots at GW told the Journal guys that they couldn't print a magazine for any game that wasn't still in production. For Necromunda, Mordiem, Inquister, and Battlefleet Gothic this was easy. They just reprinted the rule books on their own. They were able to come out with a new bloodbowl game too because it was cheap and easy to make.

Finally one day, the guys at the journal apologized(in white dwarf I think) to all the WHQ players. They could no longer support it. Try as they might, they couldn't find away to rerelese WHQ for under $100, so the company wouldn't produce it. :(

When the game came out, it was an incredible deal for what all game in it. It's a deal they don't know how to duplicate.

I usually played a chaos warrior (my friend had this crazy orange book all about chaos warriors, so I had HUGE charts to roll on for my mutations) or the dwarven dragon slayer (is that what it was?). I tried a Skaven Rat Lord once...that was interesting.

Close, the base class was the Trollslayer, but as you worked up the levels one of the titles was Dragonslayer. Fun class. I loved playing a suicidal dwarf that would throw himself at the biggest and toughest monsters and then roleplay getting ticked as yet another monster wasn't man enough to give me the honorable death that I desperately wanted!!! :D Good times...

Yeah, but do you know who he bought a complete set of 3rd Edition (including the three expansions) from?

Me.

Small world, isn't it?

Though I could weep when I think of how little it cost him, and how much Talisman was selling for last year.

I'd bought the set cheap at a remaindered book shop - GW must have offloaded Talisman there when it didn't sell so well in the GW shops. i think I paid £10 for the base game and £5 for each expansion (about $50 in total). Never played it, so sold it on.

To John, as it happens. I know it was him, because we're both running games at the UK Games Expo - Talisman for him, Heroscape for me - and he messaged me on the organizers forum to say "are you the Richard that I bought a set of Talisman off?" and it turned out that I was.

Of course, another big difference between us is that he's getting some official support from the publisher for his demoing of Talisman at the Expo. Whereas I'm not getting anything, not even an email from marketting in reply to mine. Well, actually I am getting one thing; bitter and jaded. Ho hum.

I saw John at the Expo. Talisman 4th ed looked pretty much like a finished, production copy. New artwork from what I could tell (I only glanced at it TBH - I was too busy demoing Heroscape!)

shallow repetitive gameplay.

I hate to say it, since I know this statement will elicit some negative reaction, but...

that's why I don't care much for Heroquest.

I know exactly what you mean. Bunjee and I picked up a copy of Heroquest at a thrift store a couple months ago. We were excited when we first got it and ended up playing the first four quests in a week. After that our interest fizzled, and we haven't touched it since.

Having little experience with RPG's Bunjee seemed to like it ok, but I grew up playing D&D and found it sorely lacking. There's no real roleplaying involved, and even the combat is too simple to make it an interesting tactical miniatures game.

By the third game we had added a few combat rules (flanking, engagement) to make it more interesting, decided to let the monsters defend on a white shield rather than a black shield to give them a little more staying power, and allowed the Zarquon player play the monsters intelligently (i.e. lay ambushes, etc.) This seemed to help, but I was still dissatisfied.

We've played Descent with some friends of ours recently, and I found it contains a lot of the detail I found lacking in Heroquest. Unfortunately it feels more like a boardgame version of a video game than a boardgame version of a dungeon-crawl RPG. (And the magic system sucks, even compared to HQ.) My quest for the perfect dungeon-crawl boardgame continues, but maybe I just need to give up and go back to playing D&D.

Anyway, Talisman doesn't look much better. I got to check out a buddy's old copy (3rd edition?) and it looked pretty much like a roll-and-move boardgame with a fantasy theme. Not very exciting...

The board in those pictures looks... boring? Uninspired, maybe? I dunno, it just doesn't look all that good. The 2nd Edition board has more character, I think. This one looks too uniform.

Nice little review http://www.talismanisland.com/review_4th.htm

I really like some of the changes. We sometimes used to house rule gaining craft for killing craft enemies. Now it's official. Limit on the number of spells a person may cast each turn is also good.

Talisman for XBLA? Good - there's 4-800 points I won't need to spend. Pureto Rico or Alhambra, please; not some tired old rubbish like Talisman (sorry, but there you have it - it's an old, outmoded sort of game with nothing to it beyond the nostalgia factor).

I'll take your Talisman: Dragons expansion off your hands!

I own all except that one, but have a duplicate version that is actually better than the original as I went through and corrected the wording to Talisman Standard on the cards (something a good editor should have done before sending to the printers)! Putting all of my homebrew Talisman cards in Talisman Standard is what probably allowed me to win 3 of 4 Talisman card design contest heats in the recent Dragon Masters Competition at Talisman Island (http://www.talismanisland.com/competition.htm) with Wood Ogre, Wood Elf and Dry Season (you might note that my entries were not only worded correctly, but used the correct fonts and formatting which the TCC cannot do).

No you won't. Se the word "most" that I used when talking about the expansions I have? That means there are gaps. No Dragons (and I'm not sure whether I ever bought the City either). Timescape was enough to convince me that GW had been to the well to drink once too often.

Timescape was enough to convince me that GW had been to the well to drink once too often.Time Scape is the only 2nd Edition I don't have. Never really appealed to me, although if I played it I might change my mind.

If they make expansions for 4th edition, I wouldn't mind some completely new characters or areas to explore. The only section we really use is the Dungeon. I've made it to the center more times with the dungeon than I have going up through the regions. We have the City but feel it adds to much extra time and hassle to the game.

mmh but i think the 3rd edition expansions were nice , add on the game board.+ the 3d drogon tower..

the 4th edition board is so big that if city and cave expansions came need more room.

if you look the game trailer you can see the fantasy 3 level world , that is cool, if you could set the expansions on a desk in the middel of the board.

Boardgamegeek's entry for Dungeonquest includes some accessories by fans that include paper figures. I too got a copy of Dungeonquest without figures and I play the game just fine with the paper heroes. The accessories also include a good set of house rules for more balanced play. Well, not really more balanced, just more survivable as the original rules only allowed for a 15% chance of finishing the game let alone winning it.

I have Talisman 4th Edition by Black. Now I'm torn as to whether or not to buy the new 4th Edition Revised entire set, or the Upgrade pack.
I am having the same quandary, as I own all of the US released versions of Talisman so far (I had to state 'US released' as Jon from Talisman Island (http://www.talismanisland.com/) jumped me when I stated I had "all" versions considering he has all international and promo releases most of us have never even heard of ;) ). I am thinking, due to the close release of 4th edition and 4th edition revised, I may just stick to the Upgrade Pack, at least for now ...

the upgrade pack is real the best thing for the bi version.
the game is the same. you got many things new
card
charakter sheats
figures
fate token
und the talisman 3rd "hat" marker(?)
and the rule book.

but in all the the upgrade pack is
a talisman without gameboard, dice and gold.
the real new talisman will start with the reaper expansion(but i hope for a fast date for the regular expansions city and ect.)

so far i have seen english vs german board the fields are the same.
but there was also rumor about stickers(maybe the changed some text on the map)

I know this is like a four year old thread, but does anybody still play Talisman? As far as I know, they are still releasing expansions for the Revised 4th edition. My brother and I have been playing Talisman lately, and it's a lot of fun in our opinion.

I know a lot of people feel that luck is too big a factor in the game, but if you don't play it hyper-competitively, then it is a ton of fun.

Always loved Talisman although I think the newest version with all the expansions have made the game too disjointed. Looking forward to Relic- the Warhammer 40k version of Talisman.
