View Full Version : HS Redefining Cool

HS is having a powerful shaping impact on my children.
Right now my kids have one uncle (we'll call him uncle Bob). Uncle Bob plays HS with us. In a month, there's a family wedding where they will gain a second uncle (let's call him uncle Fred). Uncle Fred has never played HS.
Uncle Bob has been expressing concerns, jokingly, that uncle Fred will replace him as the "cool uncle."
My 9 year old daughter heard my wife and I talking and laughing about uncle Bob's concerns. My daughter was indignant.
She said, "Uncle Fred will never be cooler than uncle Bob! Uncle Fred doesn't know anything about StarWars or Heroscape!"
That's right folks. It's official. HS is the gold standard for cool.

Actually, uncle Fred was over a month or so ago, and my son dragged him down to the basement to show him our HS setup. Uncle Fred became very focused and intense as my son explained the basic game concept.
Nothing more fun than watching the birth of a new HS addict.

I can't imagine a grown man with a little kid in him not getting hooked immediately with HS. Now if you can just both uncles over the house at once. Funny, I had never thought of it before but most of my nephews and nieces consider me their favorite uncle because I play games with them.

I have my Heroscape binder in my van. My son went to a classmate's birthday today and I've been thinking of exposing this kid's dad to Heroscape. When we had some downtime, I told about the game and went out and got the binder.
He was very interested.
Also, I got a hold of Silverstoner...finally! Last night he was doing some D&D with about 5 co-workers. I asked him if they've tried Heroscape and Stoner said one person in the group bought the master set, but has yet to play it. I told Stoner to stop the D&D game and bring them to my house for a HS crash course.
I may have a whole slew of folks to play with this summer.
This just may be the 'Summer of Cool'. 8)

Told this story to Pilgrim, So I'll share with the rest of the calss.
Recently taught my sons friend how to play HS (at thier request).
He is heavy into Yugioh, (spelling) and he got right into HS.
We finished a quick game on a small board. As soon as its over its like can we play again...We couldn't as his mom was there to pick him up.
Now its "Mr. Prime can we please play HS again".
and "Your Dad is the coolest". (well at least for a few more years)

Also, I got a hold of Silverstoner...finally! That's great to hear, Hex!
At Kublacon, the tournament players were all suggesting that we get a NorCal game going, not just at a tournament - maybe a smaller group of players, and you were mentioned, and Malechi and SilverStoner...... it'd be a lot of fun if we could work something up, without convention fees, etc, to play.

Reminds me of something that happened here a while ago. My wife does some daycare in the house and one of the kid's mom just got married. When the mom came to pick up the kid with the then fiance on a Friday afternoon, the guy saw me and my boy setting up a map. His eyes kind of lit up, and he says, "I want to play". He didn't know what it was, but you could see the little boy light up in his eyes. Stupid woman dragged him away.

oh yea I fall in the cool uncle catagory. It helps that I bought them all heroscape also. My niece is 22, and she was like - no way am I playing that. I got her boyfriend hooked on it, and so now she plays all the time, the great part is she almost always kicks her boyfirends butt at it.
Not heroscape related, but the same niece when she was 10, had me as a babysitter one day, my sister promised it wouldn´t be more then an hour or an hour and a half. 4 hours later I have to feed them ( she has 2 younger siblings ), so based on the movie a christmas story ( the red rider bb gun, where the kid will shoot his eyes out ) I tought the kids how to eat like piggies, and they learned real good, they did it for the next month at home, Mom said I was never babysitting again, and I became uncle piggy for a few years....................

Hey skyknight, thanks for noticing. I have been on vacation and playing a lot of HS, so I havn´t been posting much, I have lurked some, but when I can get in game time, that is better then posting and dreaming of HS.
BadCalvin missed thge ScreamingTruth tourney, shame, I was really looking forward to meeting him.
I just spčnt over $500 on a whole 2nd set of HS for the states , and to round off some extra squad for my main unit in Costa Rica. Of course that includes $40 in prizes for Screaming´s tourney- and I bought a MS for a friend to spread the love and get more HS players out there, but I got it all. I also bought some of Endpawns killer terrian. The jungle is really cool ( we made a house rule for it that when on jungle tiles your range is -2 ). The snow is great for making large snowfields, and the sand tiles have sandpaper on them and just give the whole board a different feel, being textured and all.

Except for letting them think they are going to win their first match and then crushing them.

BadCalvin will return. He's been busy with work from what I hear. I want him to repost his terrain thread. Heck, I should take pictures of the stuff purchased/traded from him and post it.

Hey MiniVan,
Yea it was great watching them eat like little piggies, the movie is a classic, and that is one of my favorite scenes from the movie.
To be honest , it also took me a while to change from the HSHQ, it was the site that helped me get so hooked on HS, so I was sad to see it die, but everything changes. Heck I use to pick the Krav first if I wanted to win, now with all the new guys, they suck if the other guy (s) pick Q-9, go figure, change with the times or be left behind.
And remember kids, Bush is a Dope, Dope is a bush

At the risk of seeming sappy, I wanted to share the acrostic I found scrawled on a piece of paper in my 7-year-old's room. He apparently felt inspired one day and captured his moment of pure exhilaration on paper....he is only slightly more obsessed with Heroscape than me. :D

My sister is a HUGE Lord of the Rings fan. She would correct you if you said a quote wrong. She has all extended editions, theatrical editions, action figures, puzzle books, calendars, games, you name it, we were watching the Two towers and she was like I love the swog rider scene. This isn't really a big deal to most people, but to her, it is like a huge mistake. It looks like she is becoming a true hs addict.
