Tourney Rules

Entry fee
$5 + bring something for the prize table or $10 and don't bring anything. I just want to make sure there are a couple of decent prizes (Like a shiny new MS!).
This is still up in the air.

Prizes
If you are planning on bringing something for the table let me know so I can add it to the list.

:!: InfinityMax has promised a dice tower if we have 10 or more participants (which we do). This is a really cool prize. Check out his website!
http://www.vixentorgames.com/
:!: A dice tower made by Damja out of a Wave 5 display box inspired by a thread from a while ago. I'll get a pic so you all can laugh at it too :neener:
:!: Sir Glbert Flag Bearer of Jandar
:!: In store Credit to host store

Army
-Each player is responsible for bringing a 500 point army, order markers, dice, and wound markers (you may want to mark your figures.)
-No customs or proxies (repaints of official figures are ok.)
-No sideboarding.
-Starting zones will be 24 hexes. If your army does not fit - too bad!

Maps
-Maps will be be official HS maps from Hasbro, including expansions or custom maps that include 1 MS and up to 1 expansion set.
-There will be no castle doors.
-Glyphs will be used

Table of Giants (hasbro MS map)

Meat Grinder-modified (http://www.heroscapers.com/download/index.php?dlid=185)(In downloads section)

Spring Thaw (http://www.heroscapers.com/download/index.php?dlid=282)(In downloads section) I declare normal snow and slippery ice this day.

We will see how many people register to see if we need more maps.

Scenarios
-All games will be a deathmatch.

Format
-Swiss style tournament.
-Each game will last up to 45 minutes. When time is up, players must finish the current round quickly.
-The winner of the game will be determined by who has the most points on the battle field at the end of the time limit if necessary.
-Points for squads will be found by dividing the point value of the card rounding decimals. For example, if you have 2 Marro warriors left when time expires you would count that as 25 points. For one unit you would earn 13 points.

Scoring
-Win/Loss Record takes precedence over points
-The total point differential will break ties for seeding of rounds for players with the same record

Set Up
I will need some help setting up maps and will need some people to bring in terrain. I will have 3 (maybe 4) maps worth of terrain, but we will need more. Set Up will take place an hour before the start of the tourney. Let me know if you can help with this.

That's it for now. More to come!

So Feb puts it, durring the toys r us buy one get one free sale time... good to use the sale to aquire more maps for torny ;).

I am leaning towards Oakland County right now, I just need to make sure there is room at the location I was thinking of. So I need to get some RSVPs.

Let me know if you would be bringing other people so I can get an idea of how many maps and how much room we would need. I will have myself, at least 1 friend from Grand Rapids and maybe up to 5 more people there.

If there were to be any fees it would be to cover prize expenses. The max would be $5 + bring something for the prize table or $10 and don't bring anything. I just want to make sure there are a couple of decent prizes (Like a shiny new MS!).

Nothing is set in stone yet it all depends on how many people show up.

I mostly just wanted to know if there would be a fee, it was not in the original post.

Anway I may or may not show up depends on weather...

Prizes have to be Scape related or not? I have a few ideas of stuff I do not want but others might (I have too many of them), its new in box, even an out of production item.

I do not expect to win, or pose much of a challenge, I have not played many scape games, just looking to play some more games... heck I do not have many figures to make up a worth while army even.

Heh, my wife just looks at me like I'm deranged when I start fiddling with the army cards and figures.

Though she DID offer to play once. I checked her meds and she'd taken them all, so I think she was just colossally bored...

Don't know if it matters or not, but there is a place calledx Fun 4 All in Ypsilanti that has tons of tables for gaming. It is a comic store that usually hosts Magic and stuff like that.

If it is out this way (ann Arbor) there are 4 of us that could play.

Hartland (one of the locations mentioned as a hosting site) would be too far for you, MainMan?

Have one of the 4 of you hop on a Glyph of Valda and then send the other three up Hartland way...

I was play testing my army 500 vs 500-700 point armys on my own, its silly as hell to play oneself... especially when I actualy lost once LOL. I am mostly doing it to make sure I know all the right rules for the tourny... and so I dont forget things like syvaris's second attack etc... cuz I know my oponent is not going to remind me ;).

I keep changing what figures I want to bring for my army LOL... if it was 600 I think I know what I would want to bring, but 500 I keep changing my mind... (which means 500 will be more fun).

I will play anyone who is in my area... playing alone is very boring.

monte_kev
January 7th, 2007, 06:23 PM
well I thought had an idea till this weekend, now it is back to the drawing board to prep for this tourny.

played a 1k games after the RIW tourny and I used gilbert for the first time, and I am liking the:
1x Sir Gilbert - 105pts
1x Alastir MacDirk - 110pts
2x Knights of Weston - 140pts
2x 4th Mass. Line - 140pts
Total - 495

but I am not sure if it has quite the crushing ability I am used to playing.
oh well plenty of playtesting before I have to decide.

BTW which maps are included in this statement?
-Maps will be be official HS maps from Hasbro, including expansions or custom maps that include 1 MS and up to 1 expansion set.

just want to know the boards I can expect to see.

thanks guys, should be a blast.

Yea I was curious what maps too... I saw the no castle door, but I was also thinking no castles at all... so now I am wondering if there will be castles.. not something I would like to see in a tornament.

Also... the hasbro maps are often lop sided... who picks what side?

Would having lower total army points be of any benifit? tie breaking? deciding who gets what side?

I was going to take charos, but after rolling some weird rolls in my test games I decided I do not like loosing a large chunk of my army value all at once ;)

Wish we could take 800 pnts, then only field 500... or something like that. ;).

Having looked over the "official" maps, I have to agree that most are probably too one-sided for tournament play. And I'd second the "no castles at all" vote.

My guess is Damja is going to favour some of the custom ones found on this site designed for tournament use.

I'm still curious whether all scenarios will definitely have glyphs or not. It can make a difference...

If there are castles pieces they would be evenly distributed on the map.

Also... the hasbro maps are often lop sided... who picks what side?

Would having lower total army points be of any benifit? tie breaking? deciding who gets what side?

No one would get lower points, just the maps would be used - not the scenarios. All matches would be a deathmatch. A d20 roll would determine who picks their starting zone first.

Wish we could take 800 pnts, then only field 500... or something like that.

That would be called sideboarding. This is something that would change things considerably. There is much discussion about it and how to implement it into a tournament. For the first one, I don't really want to play around with this. Maybe in future tournaments.

Draconious
January 8th, 2007, 12:27 PM
I know about no side boarding ;) I think it fits with the games theme, bringing in heros that fit the mission etc... but its complex. However with out it, I want to know if the armies we choose will be kept secure until they are all chosen, and the game starts... other wise everyone will try to be the last one to submit their army choice... after they see everyone elses army ;).

I just dont want to see a lot of people pick squad based armies, and then have some one pick grimnak... or everyone pick a lot of charos armies and have some one pick squads... cuz that is worse than any side boarding issues.

So I propose we write down our armies, and put it in a black box. One that even a tourny host assistant cannot see. Then it gets opened when everyone has submited their army... and the torney host can write down the armies in the master list or something to make sure they dont get changed

Anyone stupid enough to tell or show others what their army actualy is... well then it becomes their own problem.

I am sure you have thought of this though. ;)

damja
January 8th, 2007, 01:05 PM
Yes, armies will be kept secure. Upon arrival you will submit your army to the tournament director (me likely). I will be the first to submit mine and your army will be kept secure until play begins. There will be no changing of armies after they are submitted.

Of course if you all want to post your armies now so I can pick mine based on what you are doing go right ahead.

(Hmmmm....maybe I should post a fake army) Oh crap! Did I say that out loud?

I worry about that too, being the only adult. I am 33 my son is 8. He is a bit flighty at times and defenately not into the competitiveness as I am. He likes to just have fun, and will even run his guys away if I am beating them. It is fun though, but you wouldn't want to show up to a tournament and be the only adult. i hear what you are saying.

I like the idea of putting the tournament in Howell. As I am coming from all the way across the state (Muskegon) it would be really nice if it were in Howell. If it's not in Howell, I don't know if I'll be able to make it or not.

I would really like to go to the tournament that would be a lot of fun.

I like the map idea above, but I think one of the ruins on the left should be placed on the right side of the river.

I pretty much echo that. Howell is a hike from where I live (which is in the boondocks outside but near Okemos/ e lansing). As long as the weahter is good I can do the Howell thing with no problem. I am more available to travel when i don't have the worry of ice and snow however. I am not sure of any space in Howell that we could use though. the game shops out there are kind of small. :(

When I was in high school my friends decided to host a Magic tournament, and they were able to use a conference room at a local hotel for a minimal fee. If there is a motel or hotel that is not a corporate chain, they would probably allow us to have a tournament in one of their conference rooms for cheap, especially if there isn't anything going on that weekend, and depending on the time of the tournament, some of us may prefer to spend the night in the hotel/motel instead of driving 3 hours to or from home, especially if the weather is bad.

There is one game shop in Howell that could work but I don't want to give them a plug or a reference link yet because the owner has not yet contacted me (I left him information a few days ago and asked for a contact in return to discuss details).

There would be room there for about 10 maps or so in the game room + one or two outside of it if they would allow us the space.

I think I know who you are talking about. They are in a strip mall? It is a pretty tight fit in their store. he does sell HS marked up pretty good. You might have to call him again.

thoughts on tables:
table of giants: long shooting lanes, range will win here.

meat grinder: a bit open but alot more elevation changes to slow things down espesially the water...flight will be a good thing. I still see range grabbing the high ground the having a field day with the melee units bogged down in the water.

spring thaw: looks cool, alot of stuff to slow things down...the ice will cut down shooting lanes, I think this will be a very cool board.

just my thoughts out loud, deffently re-looking at my builds

again, appreciate you posting this info early so we can be prepared.

i wouldnt worry about the inexperience factor-a couple of the guys who are thinking of coming out with me from GR have only played once or twice. I myself am far from being some sort of strategic mastermind and am pretty non-competitive. The idea is to have fun playing a sweet ass game and meet some new people. Hopefully, everyone will be accommodating and patient with any newbies. Shame on anyone who losses sight of the whole idea of having fun.

Shame on anyone who losses sight of the whole idea of having fun.
It's not fun to crush one's enemies and watch them squirm in the dust and detritus of their own miserable failure?

Nah, kidding...

I agree with Notorious 100%.

These "tournaments" shouldn't really be about competition. They're about fun. About playing a fun game with new and (hopefully) interesting people.

I used to live back east and play a good deal of board games with a large group of people. And generally, for most every game at most every session, there was at least one person who didn't know the rules of the game we were about to play and thus had to be taught.

And there's nothing wrong with that. Teaching can be fun. We all remember how bad we were with the rules in the beginning and just grin and nod when a mistake is made.

So c'mon down! Watch! Play! I think you'll find it's not a big deal either way...

Just to piggyback on what everyone else has said - Come and play. I would bet that most of the people registered have not played HS in a tournament. Notorious and I pretty much only play with each other (and sporadically as we live on opposite sides of the state).

The main reason why we are doing this is so that we can get a group of people together and play. Just to make it more interesting and to see who sucks the least on that day we're doing it in a tournament fashion.

Hope to see you become active in the forumns (theres a lot of good info out there) and see you in February!

I play tested my army on the meat grinder last night...the board is alot of fun compared to my initial thoughts.

it was shooting fish in a barrel if the range grabbed the hills and just started capping the melee units crossing the swamp.

overall it was fun tho.

one question regarding the meat grider? are we using the starting positions indicated in the build? or are we using a must be touch back edge then build in from there? I ask this cuz range 10/9 can shoot the other starting zone without even moving if we use the whole start up area, and if the deployment is done correctly. dead-eye dan picking units off first activation scares me...haha

I may move them a bit. If we take the 3 closest starting hexes and shift them to behind the ruins that should work out ok. I will play with it a bit more.

I may have to cancel my plans to attend this, due to a car accident... I do not really want to drive my truck anywere but where I have to (class/work). but its a month away so who knows...

All because I had to make one more trip to TRU to find flag bearers..........................

I got a month to go, but right now if I need to I can limp the truck there... now that time has gone by and its not imediatly after the accident, I dont see the damage as beeing that bad, its just things that got damaged that I do not know about that scare the crap out of me lol... so I guess I am still good to go... and parents might be in town around then so I might be able to use their car incase mine is in shop or something. And I managed to find half of 2 more sets of FBearers last night ;).

And I managed to find half of 2 more sets of FBearers last night ;).

Sorry to hear about the accident, Drac...

Did you happen to see the Einar FBer (a spare, that is). That's the only one I've not gotten yet (after hitting abput 6 TRU's in the south-central and southeast parts of the state).

I went to Novi, Telegraph, and Ann Arbor TRUs last night... Telegraph had
some master sets that were opened (first edition, but larger number so I doubt they had sparkle water) I was told I could get 7$ off, but I didnt buy them... I only took 2 blue flags and a red and gray one... they didnt have any purple/green... there was only 2 or 3 left here...

The Novi one that I expected to have all of them, did not have squat, although they had a large pile of Playstation 3's lol... the ann arbor one

The ann arbor one, had a crap load of Blue Flags (10+)... but only one gray other then the blue ones, that I took ;).

I still need 2 green and 2 purple to complete 2 sets.

Friday was not a good day to check, they are usualy cleaned out on friday, in MI most stores get restocked Mon/Tues or Wed... depending on the store.

Gratiot, Madison Heights, and Lakeside TRUs do not have squat either, they did not even have master sets lol...

All of the stores had like 100 packs of wave 5...

January 14th, 2007, 12:05 AM
you can count me and my friend in. we played friday night from 11pm - 8am the next morning. The second game he played as Einar and had a 1300 point army and I was Jandar in the Castle with my 900 point army. he quit after 4 hours because Nielfhiem was dispatched to reak havoc on his Legionaires and Sacred band.

I am going tomorrow to TRU hunting in Ohio. In the oregon TRU they always have every set imaginable except wave 3 so I'm gonna pick up all the flag bearers as I have none.

I did score some Zombie and Heroes from Wave 6 at the Taylor Walmart today, but I think they put them out there on error because the scanner didnt even recognize them. The cashier had to add them manually.

Tourny sounds fun. You can definatly expect us there.

I may have one more also, I'll let you know after I call them tomorrow

So I've now come up with three army ideas that I've tested and discarded. One wonders if I am that bad at designing armies, or that bad at playing?

Anyone else having better luck?

Oh, and is anyone open to the idea of loaning units to help people out in rounding-out their armies, if they don't happen to have a needed unit? Like a 3rd set of some common squad, or a rarer unit (like EOV or Nerak).

I'd be willing to help others in such a way, as I am able...

I'll be brining all my figs so if you need something I am not using, my figs are marked so I will loan out figs.

damja
January 18th, 2007, 11:10 AM
I've experimented with a couple of ideas too. One of my armies is a Marro and Orc Killer! (I'm just not sure if it good for anything else)

I even considered play testing an army consisting of only 4 cards just to see what would happen!

I had to sit back and ask myself...do I want to play for fun or for competition.

I was thinking an all mind-shackle/soul devour army...but its not very effective, just a whole lot of fun.

the other army has won a couple games with friends on the listed boards, and i am happy with its performance thus far...

damja,
RIW hobbies game rooms are completly booked for this day. So no dice there man.

anyone have a condo/apartment cummunity center we could rent for the afternoon? usually its just a deposit and then if you leave it clean you get your deposit back.

other ideas:
church meeting rooms
hotel confrence rooms
or
someones big ass house to host this deal.

damja,
two weeks away can you toss a progress report at least?

If you guys wanted to come out to Morrice (between lansing and flint on i-69) I could probably get us some space somewhere. on short notice I am not sure, but if we were planning out a bit it would not be a problem.
pm me if you are interested at all.

2 and a half weeks, thank you.

I have been in contact with the Manager of Fun 4 All Comics and Games in Ypsilanti. He said he was definatly interested in hosting the event for us. I am going to call him Wednesday to confirm everything.

The guy in Howell flaked out (never returned follow up emails or phone calls). Needless to say, I will not be doing business with him anytime soon.

I have updated a couple of things in the first post of the thread. Please re-read it if you have not done so in the last week or so.

*edit*
I talked to Richard at Fun 4 All and it is a go - so our location is set. I am going down there on Saturday to check out the space and work out final details. He did mention that there is a MtG Tourney that day later in the afternoon so if anyone plays they might be able to make a day of it.

He also mentioned that he had a full set of wave 6 in stock, so if none of you has it yet, you might want to go get it before I get there on Saturday, because it will likely be gone when I leave. :D

Richard seems like a cool guy and is already talking about a semi-regular tourney if this goes well!

Recheck the original post when you get a sec and let me know if you can help set up/bring terrain.

Happy 'Scaping!

Slight change to the time allowed for each round. Because I want to have rounds start every hour I have changed the maximum time for each round of play to 45 minutes.

I am headed down to AA today to finalize details and I will post further updates this afternoon.

A round or a game in 45 minutes? ;)

I've played some slow games... so who knows.
I guess if you play vs some one that started with 5-10 points less than you, you just have to keep running and not get killed and when time is up you win LOL :)

Fun 4 all is going to work out great for us. Rich pretty much gave me the back 2 rooms of the store for our tourney if we need them. The biggest thing is that we cannot bring in any food or drink (he has pop/water and snacks). So, everyone will need to eat before we get there, or we will need to schedule a lunch break. The way I see it we have three options,

1. We start playing at 11:30 or 12 and play until we are done and either eat before or after we play.

2. We start at 11:30 or 12 and take a lunch break after the second round.

3. We start later (1:00) and play until we are done.

Should I make this a poll?

I hate to do this, but I won't know if I can be there until shortly before it happens. I'm kind of in limbo right now with my life. I've been busy trying to get a job in DC, and in so doing, I may be moving out to the DC area that weekend or before. It just depends if I get some of the jobs for which I've interviewed, and with the tournament being in Ypsi, because that guy in Howell is a flake, that adds an extra hour on my drive. I'll see what I can do, but what's the latest that I can RSVP?

TheMainMan

I say we start at 11:30 and play until we are done. It would be easy to grab some NcDonalds or something on the way and eat in the car. Also, if you need a snack to power through, they have candy bars and stuff.

Nice organizing! I am extremly excited. I talked to Rich Friday, and he said he would be happy to order us Heroscape stuff direct and he would get it just like Sandra does. That saves me shipping!! And we could pick it up the day it comes out! Now there is no more waiting for mail!!

Think he would aquire one of every figure expansion and sell them at or near wholesale? in a bulk deal? ;) it might make my drive there worth it, and I dont have many addons, I refuse to pay 12$ for 5-6 plastic figures... and I can never find those 7-8$ sales...

I tired to get the figures i wnated to build an army out of but they are too hard to find ;) -- dont really want to barrow them either... so I will be bringing a rather crappy army LOL...

There is also a chance I wont be able to go due to the longer drive now... and I will be even less likely to go if there is snow/ice that day... although I might go anyway if I get bored enough.

I have no real input from the last one besides making sure we don't use maps as small as the Meat Grinder again. Maybe some more melee-friendly maps? (Lot's of trees and other LOS blockers, no ice in the middle).
