Plus Tanga has "Daily Fun"
Which is a daily puzzle.
They are the toughest puzzles I have seen in a long time. Many of them Mensa type stuff.
Lately they've been kind of easy/cheasy, but for the first 2 months or so, they were giving away a prize (the item they were selling) to the first person to complete the puzzle.
These items they'd give away were crazy sometimes.. TVs, board games, and other things.
They stopped with the prizes in October, but after thankgiving they had a Tanga Puzzlethon, 24 puzzles in 24 hours.
They gave prizes to the top 10 people. My wife won a board game, we're waiting for it to arrive. We got cluzzle... party game, so not too exciting, but good for social groups!
Anyway, the puzzles.. though hard sometimes, are awesome.

Yeah, I avoided the second Tangathon and after looking at what was for sale I am glad that I did. My credit card bill would be astronomical! Well I guess more astronomical than it already is...
We have bought Oasis, Saga, both of the RotH games. I bought the three copies of the first mystery game deal they had and got 3 copies of Lucky Loop, I was hoping to get atleast 2 different games. I wasn't as upset as a lot of people were, because its really not that bad of a game. Its basically a Yahtzee variant and I like Yahtzee.

Friend of mine picked up Return of the Heroes and the expansion from Tanga and got it this past week. We played through a game last night and overall I thought it was pretty decent. I like how the game really focuses on quests... as you go along you'll find random quests to embark on (usually find item A and deliver it to location B) that give various rewards. You also have a main quest you need to complete before you can face the final boss guy, so you get this interesting case of getting distracted by all these side quests.
Comparisons to Runebound are certainly in order ;) Runebound is very combat-heavy and all about building your character and acquiring items and allies to minimize the effects of luck in your dice rolls. You'll get some small quests here and there but it's more about the adventure of finding enemies to conquer and building up your character. There are an amazing number of items and allies to purchase at the town markets which really makes the game play out different every time.
Return of the Heroes has you building up your character but combat is far more basic than it is in Runebound. The game focuses much more on finding and completing quests that'll help strengthen your character. There's far less emphasis on items and not even close to the same variety in "stuff" you can get.
Both are "race" games where there's little player interaction (unless you add expansion for Runebound) and players are competing to be the first to kill the final boss character. It seemed like both games probably take roughly the same amount of time to play although there's less downtime for each player in Return of the Heroes as each player turn is relatively short (whereas combat can drag out a bit in Runebound). Both also suffer from similar problems where the early game moves fairly quickly but the end game can drag on a bit as there's less for the players to do as they move around to try and complete the last few things they need.
I am curious on how Return of the Heroes scales with more players... there's a static amount of content in the game and you'll even reach a point (bad guy comes out) where no more content will even hit the board; seems like that could make things stuff but it certainly puts a timer on game end. Runebound never "runs out" of stuff on the board although pickings can get slim at times. Death is very harsh in both, especially late in the game; it's really nasty in Runebound and I think it would be a game-ender for someone in Return of the Heroes.
I do kinda wish I had picked up Return of the Heroes when I saw it on Tanga. I figured I owned Runebound so I really didn't need another game like it. Turns out that while it has a lot of similarities it does have a different feel to it while playing and I think Return of the Heroes might be a little more accessible for some (even though the rule book may be the worst ever created) as the quests always give you some tangible thing to work on rather than just running around bashing bad guys. I do think that in the long run Runebound will have longer legs due to the crazy number of expansions, especially the ones that actually change the end-game scenario, which is really cool.
Wow, hrm, that kinda started to wander a bit. Anyway, I look forward to hearing what people think of Return of the Heroes ;) Let me know if you have questions, I think I remember most of how it works.

Tonight's Tanga is Ra, which is a fantastic game by Reiner Knizia. It's sort of an auction game but not. I'm not a fan of pure auction games but Ra is one of my personal favorites. Tiles are put out and players can initiate a one-around auction. The beauty of the game is that everyone has four numbered tokens that are used to bid. If you win a bid you take the bidding token currently on the board (along with the tiles you were auctioning for) and your auction token goes in the middle. Essentially the game isn't about evaluating how much something is worth but it's all about putting other players in a tough situation where they need to decide if they should use their big tokens to keep you from getting some tiles or if they should let it pass. Bidding is purely relative and I love it.
dead_radish
December 26th, 2006, 12:35 PM
Ra is such a fine game. So many aspects to it to enjoy - you can try to build sets, try to have the most of various types, go for straight points....
I've had it for a couple years, and keep trying to get people to play it. The strategy involved is very deep, so it takes a while to get the hang of it.

Die Macher on sale now on Tanga ($22.99 + $6.00 S&H):
http://www.tanga.com/
NS, I changed the title to reflect new game.
From BGG:
Die Macher is a game about seven sequential political races in different regions of Germany. Players are in charge of national political parties, and must manage limited resources to help their party to victory. The winning party will have the most victory points after all the regional elections. There are four different ways of scoring victory points. First, each regional election can supply one to eighty victory points, depending on the size of the region and how well your party does in it. Second, if a party wins a regional election and has some media influence in the region, then the party will receive some media-control victory points. Third, each party has a national party membership which will grow as the game progresses and this will supply a fair number of victory points. Lastly, parties score some victory points if their party platform matches the national opinions at the end of the game.
The 1986 edition featured 4 parties from the old West Germany and supported 3-4 players. The 1997 edition supports up to 5 players in the re-united Germany and updated several features of the rules as well. The 2006 edition also supports up to 5 players and adds a shorter 5 round variant and additional rules updates by the original designer.
Massive game but would love to get this on the table at least once a year.

It does look like a good game not sure how well it scales from 2 to 6. After reading the reviews and quick how to play it seems like something that I could get on the table here.
Just one note on the OOP (out of print) tag: This game is still available from most online stores (I checked the prices before buying one on Tanga). Most small print games (i.e. most games not from Hasbro or Mattel) are technically out of print after the print run unless the manufacturer is slated for more print runs. :D

Not that great of a "deal" on the price because most of the online retailers have it for $12.99 but then you have to either spend enough to get free shipping or pay $6-8 for shipping. So I'm getting it. :D

Same here; and yes, FedEx does indeed suck. Christmas '05, they lost a power supply I'd ordered for my (now dead) laptop. Okay, I paid $20, was re-imbursed, it was a busy time.
Not!
Last November, they lost my son's birthday present - a 125 pound desk that was heavier than God himself and in a huge box. Now we did get a desk, but it was a month late. I told my wife, we should get him something small. My lovely (cheap, neat-freak) wife, "No, he'll have plenty of other gifts."
When it finally arrived and we told him it was his belated birthday present and why, he said, "I wondered why Mama and Daddy didn't get me anything."
I told my wife that next time, I'm going with my first instinct about things like that, my son doesn't miss anything. He's sitting in my game room right now as I type this making up his own version of D&D. He started out copying the dungeon plans from the D&D Fantasy Adventure Game, so he could cheat when we play. (I have to give him credit for his Kobayashi Maru creativity.) :P

Wow Ninth, that must have made you feel about 2 inches tall. I feel for you. At least you have a good kid and he didnt throw a tantrum about it. And it worked out in the end...
Yeah, so anyway, FedEx screwed me too. They picked up the Racers from Tanga on the 20th, in Georgia. Supposed to be here in time for my son's birthday party on the 23rd. They still have not left Georgia and they keep postponing the arrival date. I am up to March 2nd now! At least this was an impulse buy and I hadn't really planned on getting these for his birthday anyway. Still, 2 weeks to move a package HALFWAY across the U.S. Welcome to the 1970's... :?

Me too, I can't figure out the best way to store all the parts! I am thinking a plano tacklebox but I want to keep the stat strips (which I am not a big fan of, because they don't like up right when you put a bunch together, its kind of annoying) with the parts so I know what they are...but then you need long compartments...ugh....

Every now and then they have woot-offs which are like the Tangathons and sometimes they'll have the infamous woot "bag of crap" where you get a bag of some sort and three "craps." I love Tanga but I don't think their user base is large enough to keep having as many repeat items as they do. It's not a good sign when even the board games are sitting up for hours at a time. Yeah, the unusual ones that they only have a handful of copies of sell out fast (like T&E did this Tangathon) but when Die Macher and Hoity Toity sit up for hours on end you know that they just don't have a big enough user base. Everyone buys stuff up the first couple of times it's up and then there's not enough demand to keep reselling these items.
Which is too bad. I think it's a good site and they have some decent offers from time to time... I've even purchased a handful of non-board game related items from them. Just need to get more people in somehow.

Ticket to Ride for 28 including shipping. You can get it for 27 from Thoughthammer but that does not include shipping. Thoughthammer has free shipping for orders over 150 but I'm not going to make an order that big so this is a decent deal for me, if not spectacular. I ended up buying a copy of that. It sounds like the kind of game I like - simple abstract rules that create complex decisions. Those kind of things are great for developing thought processes in kids too so from the sound of it I'd love to have my kids play this one as soon as they are ready. I also absolutely love the novel Lost Horizons so the theme is right up my (v)alley.

I read the description ...
Players take on the roles of leaders of a specific tribe. There is a battle raging over the empty villages of the land and players must quickly fill those villages with their tribal leaders. As players migrate tribal leaders from one village to the next, they must not become too weak or they risk losing leaders to opposing tribes. The ultimate object of the game is to have the most leaders on the board at the end of the game.

With my friendly local gaming group I get to play a large variety of games, many that I've never played before or even heard of before and so far I've got a long list of games that one of us owns that I'd love to play again.
Vegas Showdown
Hollywood Blockbuster
Red Dragon Inn
Last Night on Earth
Settlers of Catan
Carcassonne
Ticket to Ride
BattleLore
Munchkin
And then there are games one of us have purchased and still haven't had time to play yet, like

You may still be able to find Vegas Showdown on clearance at a TRU. It's out of print now, but still surprisingly cheap on ebay.
If you're mostly playing with a game group, I don't suppose there's a reason for you to pick up copies of many games that someone else already has. Quite a few of those are great kid/spouse friendly family games though, and are nice to have. Maybe worth while to keep an eye out for a good deal? I also know cardhaus has 10% off its games now....

If you can find it cheap (like under $20) it might be worth getting, but as an auction game it just pales in comparison to Hollywood Blockbuster. In VS, players bid on one of several lots available simultaneously. In practice, people end up bidding on different lots so there's not a lot of competition to drive up bids. In HB players bid on one lot at a time and there's a lot of bidding competition for each lot. VS does have the nifty geometric tile-laying mechanic but to me that alone isn't enough to make it a better game than HB.
So I guess what I'm saying is, if you can find Vegas Showdown cheap, great; otherwise save your money for Hollywood Blockbuster.
ej
November 10th, 2007, 05:20 PM
Hollywood Blockbuster IS indeed a good bidding game. The theme and the mechanics play well together. Vegas Showdown offers simultaneous play, so I tend to rate it higher than some might (and I like the tile-laying aspect of it, too).

Tanga today has 2 Marvel Heroclix Starters and 2 Boosters for 9.99 plus 5.99 shipping. Don't know if that's a good deal, but some people might like it for customs. That's actually a really good deal. The reason is that these are from the very first series of Heroclix. Still, good for some solid basic figures, and not a bad deal for those looking for customs.
They are actually from the 5th Marvel set released "Universe". "Infinity Challenge" was the first. Unlike Infinity Challenge's starter, the Universe starters are not random, so you will be getting duplicate figures, maps, and bits. The Universe boosters only hold 2 figures, so you're getting 6 known figures (x2) and 4 random figures for $10. I'm a sucker, I bought 3.
