So the ClicketyClackCrew decides to test the waters in Texas, throwing one of their own, Pitboss, to the wolves. The event discussion thread (with rules) is here (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=4377). (Cliffs: 500 pts, 24 starting zone spaces, custom pre-approved tourney maps, single elimination, 8 players)
My army:
Braxas -210
Charos -210
2x Deathreavers (Rats) -80
= 500
Match 1
I drew Markwars in my first round. We played on Rychean's "Fault Line" (http://www.heroscapers.com/download/index.php?dlid=157). I was eager for this since Mark handed me my arse in the October tourney. We draw the Attack and Healing glyphs.
Mark brings:
Theracus -40
Finn -80
Brunak -110
Thorgrim -80
Nilfheim -185
=495
I win init and lead with the rats for my first 2 turns, nabbing the Attack glyph and putting them in good position across the middle. Mark tosses Theracus and Finn right into my starting zone and gets an uncontested 4-skull hit on my Braxas. Half dead dragon! I respond with Charos and finish off the pair within the next round but not before 2 more wounds are dealt to my Queen. Finn goes on Nilfheim.
Panicking, I race Braxas against Mark's Brunak for the healing glyph. Nabbing it first, I pitch a glob of acid on Thorgrim and manage to connect. The viking promptly boosts Nilfheim. My dragon and the mount go toe-to-toe on even ground, but in the end lucky dice outlast 7 defense and he goes down. Braxas survives the encounter with 4 life left (for those not counting, she would have been dead had it not been for the healing glyph!). Mark saw it coming and brought Nilfheim (now with 7 attack and 5 defense) up early, taking down rats all along the way.
I elect not to duke it out with frost dragon's superior attack and defense and instead lure him into the middle of the map within Charos' range. This tactic proves worthwhile and Nilf takes a good lickin' from the Queen before she drops. By then, Charos was 1 turn away. The King stepped in and mopped up.
Round 2
I draw Pitboss and the task goes to me of defending Texas' pride against a very scary army. I line up in UranusPChicago's The Grass is Always Greener's (http://www.heroscapers.com/download/index.php?dlid=162) starting zone and look across to see another Charos (210) and FOUR squads of 4th Mass Line (210 + 280 = 490). That's sixteen muskets!! D20 don't fail me now...
We draw the Move and Lucky 20 glyphs! I really had no other choice than to take those immediately with the rats and charge Braxas right down the gullet. With 8 move, this wasn't difficult. Pitboss leads with Charos who gets tied up on a couple of rats and lets my Queen by.
5 turns later, I only fail two acid breath rolls. 13/15 dead Mass line and 1 to spare. Braxas finally goes down to a hail of musketfire. Neither of our Charos' are wounded.
Pitboss brings his 3 remaining Mass Line out while I lead Charos down the right flank. I make a priority of the 4th Mass while trying to keep his Charos tied up with rats. By the time the two dragons are staring each other down, I've got 1 rat left and 2 wounds on my dragon. His is unmolested.
It comes down to die rolls. We duked it out on even ground and I just got luckier. I'm conviced this is because of two things: 1- I roll dice in a tower like a truly elite gamer should. Bowls are for hippy, tree-hugging Californians. And 2- I'm Texan ...and so is God. So poor Pitboss never really had a chance.
Round 3
Wisinger also manages to eke out a win, somehow surviving DrLivingston's Deadeye Dan with a single Rat. Yes. 1 Rat. 1 Deadeye Dan. The RAT wins. So I end up facing off against the October tournament's grand champion on the final map, Knights of the Dinner Table's Meat Grinder (http://www.heroscapers.com/download/index.php?dlid=153). Wisinger once again comes original:
Taelord -180
Raelin -80
2x Omnicron Snipers -200
1x Deathreavers (Rats) -40
=500
We draw the Move and Initiative glyphs. I win the opening init for the 3rd time, surely a good omen.
I can't tell you how important it is to establish position in the early rounds when most of your points are tied up in 2 units. You simply have to control the where and when of all your battles in order to win. This was something I learned in October that I took with me to this tourney.
Being fortunate enough to finish my previous two rounds with time to spare, I had watched wisinger's strategy closely. He would immediately take the nearest high ground with snipers and support them with Taelord and Raelin, giving them a fierce 3-dice Deadly Shot and an imposing 6 defense. I could not allow that to happen!
And so, once again, the rats charged the center of the map and took the glyphs, only this time I brought several into engagement with his Omnicrons. Since he didn't have any special attacks, I was allowed to Scatter several more rats into the area. Braxas arrived soon after and began more enormously successful d20 rolling.
The omnicrons were decimated- only 1 surviving to the third round. Braxas joined engagement with Taelord and Raelin simultaneously while keeping one of his rats in range. 3 rolls later, nothing remained of them but bubbling puddles of acid.
Wisinger graciously conceded and the tournament was over. I won this:

...a full set of Flag-Bearers (Thank you Grungebob!!!) and the right to brag about how much better Texas is in EVERYTHING. It was a very quick, classy tournament and I enjoyed meeting Pitboss and, of course, promptly knocking him out of contention. Until next time, on wit'cho bad self.
