yeah, and the legionaires are winning hands down. i wonder what that means. maybe people actually like being free to bond without being restricted by general. shocking.

so if you have attended a tounament, the answer is yes
If you have not, the answer is no.
As for the poll on hasbro's site, it mat very well be a precursor to official tounaments.

I saw a topic on a new poll on the official site and it asks if you have attended a fan run tournament. and someone said that we should start one up and compare the results... so i did.

It's interesting that the differences (while early here) are not all that dramatic. Does this mean that most of the folks who visit the official site also show up here?

Well I realize this now that there's been a merge. The original thread didn't mention a HS.com poll, and therefore didn't make sense.

Yea I'd be reall intersted in hearing the results as well. Everyone should really vote at the main site quick! The main site asking that question could mean that they are debating to hold tournaments someday. If they get enough of a positive response, then perhaps we could see official tournaments someday! So get over to the main site and vote!

I would say that it's almost a guarantee that most of those votes came from here. It's too bad that they don't let us know how many people voted on the poll in total, but based on the fact that it went from 46% to 86% in about 4 hours it seems safe to assume not many.

gamjuven,
I appriciate your zeal there hotrod, but one problem. If we all rush over to HS then you don't get any kind of a valuable comparison. Is the goal to evaluate the fan base (ie younger less traveled players at HS vs older folks here) or are we just trying to push for more events organized from the top.
Yeah yeah, I'm nit pickin'. But I'm juss sayin. Yo know what I'm taukin about here?
Anyway, I haven't. I'd love to. Would get CREAMED if I did (I mean really embarrsed here). Hope to start something myself on some fine golden distant day (maybe after MidSouthCon where I can gadge the interest).

The hasbro poll makes me think two things....
A) That the poll is used as a measuring stick for the hasbro suits to see that there is an actual interest in HS tourneys...
and
B) That they may be actually tinkering with the idea of having Hasbro sanctioned tournements.
Hope thats the case.

I think they should have said something like, "would you like to attend a heroscape tourney?" then we would know they are thinking about holding tourneys and it would probably get all yes's.

There's not too much point, though, in posting a poll that you already know the answer to (or a poll that is skewed to give the results you want). On second thought, considering some of the polls around here, maybe that has become the function of polls, after all.

Time will only tell if they are using this towards something. We can always hope with WotC coming in they will begin to sanction tourneys. I believe it would be a good idea to get people from other games into the fold of Heroscape.

I wonder how many people actually go to the main site and find that poll other than people who are on this site.
I would have never looked there,.. I don't even go to the main site unless someone says something here. The main site is mostly static information.
I find it odd that the main site has a higher percentage of tournament goers than does our site...
I noticed it allows you to vote multiple times, also, some may say yes hoping to get what they want, even if they have not gone. Where as, the poll here, no one has much reason to lie.

i think you just described the discrepancy pretty well.
but i dont understand why some of you like tournaments so much. i mean if its just because you like getting together with other heroscape players that's one thing (but that doesn't necessitate a tournament). to me, heroscape is an entertaining and creative thing to do with your friends. in my admittedly limited experience in gaming tournaments i would argue that the competitive atmosphere takes all the fun out of it and at that point it's less about socializing and more about prizes and ego.
i dont know about you, but i get no satisfaction in beating a stranger and the overall experience (especially if the guy is jerk) is otherwise forgettable.

Spoken like a true introvert.
j/k
I enjoy both private and tourny play. Agreed - HS is an awesome, creative thing to do with friends and that's my primary mode for game play.
But I always find it a delight to meet new people who share a common passion. Having been to two open HS tournies so far, I've only ever experienced a fun atmosphere of good natured competition free of megalomania and cut-throat play. Perhaps it's the nature of a tourny centered on little plastic figures - it's tough to take anything too seriously.
Why does it have to be a tourny? Well, I suppose because most people enjoy good natured competition, coupled with the fact that if an event seems structured and well organized (like a tourny), people are more likely to come to it for the first time. Not sure how to explain that, but it's just how people are.
I've learned a lot about strategy and tactics playing against people outside my usual group. And I've made several new good friends (OPrime and BTL Matt) who are part of my regular social circle play as a result of the tournies.

I have only been to one tournament, the Dallas one in October. It was very different from your description of what a tournament is like. It really was a group of friends playing raucously together. There were prizes, which were really shared gifts among friends, and some good competition, but no competitive spirit worth mentioning. Strangers became friends. No one was a jerk. I'm looking forward, very much, to more tournaments in the future, most of all because of the joyful and friendly spirit among HeroScapers.

Caravaggio as I stated before... that is part of the appeal of a tournament is meeting new people and playing new competition! I don't understand your competitive comment... Even if you play against friends is not HS competitive? You do play to win don't you?
Caravaggio to address you last comment - after you play someone hopefully he no longer is a stranger :D .
Did you have a bad experience at a tournament? I tried to check with everyone that has attended my tournments in an effort to continue to make them better each time.
Anyway please don't give up on tourneys as it is my believe most if not all people are happy they came. More proof I would offer is that they keep coming back each time ( thus the tournaments keep getting bigger not smaller each time )

I love tournaments. I love hosting them and being in them, and I'd love it if there were official tournaments. so much fun playing people, making new friends. I liek the competition, i enjoy playing really good players, it allows you to see strategies and armies that u prolly wouldn't know about or see otherwise. Great fun

like i said in my previous post, i totally understand wanting to get together and meet other players, i am not introverted (but perhaps a little geekaphobic... ironic huh?). Toddrew has set up a couple of "non-tournament" events that i went to and while i was generally bored to tears i did make some good friends (which was the point, right?).
glad to hear that you guys haven't had to play against any over-zealous jerks but i've observed at least a couple times at tournaments (i've never been to heroscape tournament) people getting ***** and grouchy and calling for "official rulings" from judges and in general being un-fun. i've even seen non tournament games at these informal heroscape meetings get rediculously competitive and *****. it almost completely turned me off of ever showing up again (if toddrew wasnt such a cool guy i would have never gone to the second event).
but dont get me wrong, i thrive on competition and always play to win. I just think people take the tournament thing too seriously and to me that's not fun. anyway, i'm kind of getting the impression i'm the minority on this one.

I think you should come down to DFW and see just how friendly a large group can be. The most competitive events we've had have felt more like family reunions than competitions. And I know for a fact that myself and wisinger (and we played each other for first place in the finals) could have cared less about winning. The DFW group (almost without exception) is there to have fun first. If it wasn't like that I doubt I would still be playing.
So I can definitely understand your dilemma and cordially invite you to our next major tourney in February. ;)

Caravaggio - what kinds of tournies have you played in before? Just curious.
There's something about HS that seems to keep people in an it's-all-in-good-fun spirit and squelches the lawyery, grouchy competitiveness you're describing.
Frankly, if I was running a tourny and there was someone who was spoiling it for everyone by becoming a hyper-competitive grinch, I would confront them directly and tell them they're not welcome back to the next tourny.
Again, I love the tournies. I've been looking forward to our Jan MA tourny since the drive home from the RI tourny on Oct 21!!!

I have only been to one tourny (sadly) but it was a lot of fun. It was the first So-Cal one put on by oogie and boom. We all had a great time and if it wasnt for the age diffrence we would have goined them at the bar afterwards! I wish it was not so long a drive, but now that a few more vegas players have joined looks like we might get to have our own little get together. As far as over all competiveness there wasnt any (I mean how could there be with Oogie playing the way he did! j/k)
