Well, if you decide to sell me one let me know.

Also, I wanted to see if you guys agreed to the following. Since we never officially finished our last tourney and the only game remaining was me vs Prospect, and with the next tourney coming up, I figured we declare prospect the champion by default. We will probably not have a chance to play the final match before the next tourney since I would rather practice for Dallas. Also, since prospect went undefeated on the games, I see no reason not to declare him a winner even without playing the champoinship match. At least he could then sport the title until the next tourney which is still about a month away.

Wow. Thanks. Even though I do not really want to win this way, the match will probably never happen. I don't think I can make it the 16th unless gaming goes on past 7:30 and I don't know when you guys plan on starting. Even so I know it is for practice and testing but I would be glad to figure out your armies and show you your weaknesses and strengths.

Absolutely! I didn't mean for free bro. No, just that I figured I could get a more reasonable price form you than the stores. My nephews B-day is in April so that would cover me great. But if you can't then no biggie.

I looked over them and you can have 2 of them at the low low price of $9 each to cover the tax.

I'll keep one and may donate the other to get them started. Remember like all drugs. With heroscape the first one is free.

Here just try it once, you can't get addicted by trying it once

Yep! I've given away two copies of Swarm of the Marro lately. :)

And I agree with declaring Prospect the champ. That Taelord army was devastating!

Yeah, although I think that the battle would be interesting considering the maps favor me a bit, I just don't see when it could happen. Not only that, I would have to play him twice, which is even less likely. Besides, he played an awesome tourney so there. :D

The University of Houston at Clear Lake has a gaming club. Lots of RPGs but I've been getting them into more boardgaming.

They are open to the public if someone wants to drop by.

Right now the only open slot is every other friday as there is a 7th Sea campagin that takes up the whole guild. 5pm-? midnight usually

I've been bringing in new stuff every open week to teach them new stuff.
I want to see if I can hook some of them on heroscape as I just got my stuff unpacked and out fo storage.

When I get the website and yahoo group, I'll post it.

Sweetcurse
February 25th, 2008, 05:07 PM
The Gamer's Guild is a gamer student organization I started way back at UHCL. The organization has offical recognized status in the campus and is even sponsored by professors (who run games from time to time). They play every friday and do various games, mostly RPG, but also a plethora of board games and at some point, video games on the schools giant projectors. They have a yahoo group by the same name and a webpage I believe.

My school group went great and we may be doing it again soon. I hope to ge tthe same group but that may be unlikely. The kids were amazed at the game and ended up very happy. It was unfortunate I couldn't get them each a set like I had envisioned but oh well. Hopefully I made them Scapers in that time.

Elflord, try to keep the games at lower points in smaller maps. I have found that fast and furious games tend to engage new players more often. But the again I may just be nuts.

In response to the tourney thread:

I take a bit of offense at the thread maintenance remark. I think I have kept it very up to date with atendees and maps. As soon as the maps were proposed I put them up on the front and I have kept pretty much every other change in the front page as soon as I'm able to. It is hard to keep it all straight when we keep changing ideas though.

Also, wanting to have it all in stone that far in advance is tough when we want to be populist about the thing. We could just have someone be a dictator and decide for everyone, but luckily that isn not how we do things.

We have had pretty much all other events on saturday so I don't get the complaint there. As Jonathan pointed out we are only doing Sunday because we're excited AS is coming down.

Another reason we have had difficulty settling things down is that we lack a reliable venue. While Omega's place is killer, it can't very well hold 40 people. In that same regard, I keep hoping not to be disappointed and someday realize the Westbury dream. We have tried to find other places but it just hasn't happened for us.

I'm very irritated at all this negativity. If I was allowed to be Dr. Doom and simply dictate what we do, then things would be that smooth...but not everyone would be happy and have fun. I wanted the 400 point vanilla as much as its initial suporters did, but things happen. I actually think we have done the best in organization this time than ever before, so at least we are moving forward in that regard.

At first everything WAS decided and set, but then it became a conversation of two mostly (Jonathan and I) trying to get everyone's input. Input which tends to deteriorate into either "whatever" or simple complaining. It hurts because I think J and I have tried very hard to be accomodating to all in the spirit of fun.

Anyway, I'm glad we're coming out with all this as I think the head-butting will result in an evolution of the way we do things. In the future we could assign people specific jobs within the event organization to keep things smooth. We could have:

Thread Maintenance Person
Map Scavenger Dude (to find and examine maps)
Social Network Person (to barrage people with pm's and calls to make it happen)
Venue Manager (ehich includes all aspects of it from food, tables and anything else needed to make the venue ready)
Venue Helpers (1 or 2 people to help Venue Manager with all the details)

There can be other tasks too, we just need to discuss them for the future.

elflord
February 25th, 2008, 05:44 PM
I think you are doing a fine job. If you want to dictate, Go right ahead. If some one thinks they can do a better job, you can let them.

I'll play whatever you want, the challange for me is in design of the tourney.

If you want my input, I give it.

BUT, if you organize it they will come. Or at least I will.

I don't think anyone's actually COMPLAINING about Sunday. I only responded to Ricksta, pointing out that it wouldn't be a fair evaluation of Vanilla attendance because it was on a Sunday. Not complaining, just heading him off at the pass there. :)

On the UHCL Gamer's Guild... do they meet on campus? I remember a CL gaming group back in the 90s that I attended a few times, but it didn't meet on campus.

I acutally do not go to the school. I met some of the people through Apollocon.

Right now there is a large D&D 3.5 game going every two weeks. During those times, since I don't like or play 3.5, I run board games or whatever I feel like bringing. I have tons of stuff to bring over the next few years.

The opposite weeks, most of the guild is in a 7th Sea RPG. When that campaign dies down, I'll most likely be running Hackmaster.

There is no main focus. Just what we feel like playing. There is plently of room if you and a few friends want to set up a Heroscape league or something.

As for the next tourney. I'm going with.

1. Orcs. I love orcs
2. Samari and elves. I want to see how well counterstrike goes.
3. Morro. I love morro too
4. Undecided. I'll have to run through my sets and see what pops out to me.

Elflord:

I saw the poster on the wall at UHCL for the gaming group. I wondered what their main focus was. It would be great if you can get them into HS. I'm not much into RPG's though.

I've been going to UHCL since 1999. I'm working on my Masters in History right now.

What are you taking?

I'm hyped about the upcoming tournament. I'm just trying to figure out what armies to build. I want to put together at least one oddball group. Definitely include Dünd. haha

Spartacus

Perfect 400!

Replace Taelord with the other two gladiators. I did that the other day in a three-way 400 point game and I actually WON (against two much younger people...).

I might make that one of my four armies just for the heck of it.

Hey, jus for future reference - I went by Midnight Comics' new location today and they have a game room again! Now the room could only fit about 20 or so, but the tables and chairs are all there, which is a nice plus, and it is separated from the main store so there wouldn't be too much interference or hassle.

The problem being that it's on the outskirts of town (seems like all the game stores are) at Hwy. 6 and Westheimer, so I don't know how the rest of the Houston scapers feel about that.

Well, that's only 50 miles away from me driving across the worst stretch of 610 possible. I'd rather drive to Dallas than go there, but that's just one nonHoustonian Houstionian's opinion. There's really nothing closer than 30 miles to me. :)

Not to hijack this thread too much, but doesn anyone frequent Nan's Comics & Games? I was curious if they carried any Heroscape.

On topic: I haven't been able to stop thinking about armies for the tournament. 4x 400 pt.'ers is hard.

Where the crap are you? The worst possible stretch of 610 is the one by the Galleria... is there a worse one?

I love the West Houston area, I live in Sharpstown, but I went to high school just up HWY 6 from Midnight's new location.

They didn't carry any Heroscape last I saw, but John (the owner) would happily get some and sell it to you (for more than you'll ever pay at wal-mart, or many cheap online retailers). They do have a lot of great euro games though, as Brax-u-liscious and I have been playing those (since I can't get her back into heroscape).

Nan's comics and games is the most overpriced store I've been in. And it reeks of nerdiness in the form of MTG players and comic geeks with horrible stale dorito breath. AMAZING selection of games and reaper miniatures if you're into customs, but not for anything mainstream.

I found an ROTV there marked at $65, long before it was ever announced it was going out of print... oh, and an RTTF for the bargain price of $45.

There's a WHOLE THREAD of 400 pt competitive armies... check that bad boy out in the Competitive Armies section... I use that alot.

Junge Roman
March 4th, 2008, 07:07 AM
Yeah, I never planned on buying anything from Nan's, I was just curious because I haven't been in there in years. I am not actually looking for any 'Scape right now, unless someone has an extra RTTFF or two. I need more bridges and Dumutefs.

I was exagerating my difficulties with 400 pt armies a little. I've got my 4 already, but I'm also putting 4 ideas together for John Smith. It is hard cutting people out of your army when you have gotten used to 500 pts, though.

I'm actually in the Northeast part of Harris County. I guess I would not have to drive by the Galleria to go to that other location, but 610 between 45 and 290 is pretty rough as well at certain times of day. (again, I exagerate a little)

It isn't hard to post a sign up and get some players together. Making it official however is a tad more difficult. You need to check with your campus for requirements. But usually this involves having officers and such, holding elections, yadda, yadda. The benefit of being official, is that you get full access to the facilities, like any other club and that can be a big boon.

I saw about 30 packages of 1 halo guy, and one alien guy (i do not keep up with the halo universe, sorry). The pack of 2 guys was marked down to $1.24. They all seemed to be the exact same two guys, but if you were intertested in making some common squads of them, the figures are pretty cheap. There's a story about the ring, she likes antique/retro kinda things, and she picked it out a few months ago...

And I wrote down the number pretending to be aggravated with the whole shopping experience (because we went to every single store in the galleria that has a ring with anything remotely resembling a diamond in it).

And I went back that evening, and I bought it on the spot, and looked at it some more.

So there's another mission... look a little bit closer at the ring... you'll notice it's not one stone, but it's actually 7 small stones... in a familiar configuration...

I love her... so much... (This totally gets its own thread later...)

Hey finrod, if you can help me, I need Flash and Torpedo. If you see them please pick them up or let me know. Thanks!

Will do. The new Target had Stalker and lots and lots of Cobras.

Amish, I'm out this week. Gotta prepare for the weekend. NEXT week is a brief window of opportunity, before my wife's relatives show up on the 29th and occupy the following week. The week after THAT, I might have some time...

How did you guys like Descent?

I thought it was a lot of fun, definitely less competitive than Heroscape. Itried to get a last minute game together Saturday night, and it ended up being a pretty long game (about 4-5 hours until they got into the boss room) but I think that was mainly due to being unfamiliar with the game, and checking up on rules, etc. I played as the overlord and really enjoyed it, you will have to ask Jonathan about the "fun-ness" of the hero side

Are you free any time this week to come give it a shot?

Just to let y'all know, I'm still interested in getting together this week to do some gaming, if Lauren's working, I'll get into Heroscape or descent, but if she can/will come along, it's just gotta be one of the new eurogames...

Those are: Zooloretto, Carcassonne (and all but one expansion), Container, Mamma Mia, and For Sale...

She loves these... so time spent on these is time well spent for her... drop me a note, give me a call, or pm me if available..

I think we had Thursday set aside for Heroscaping, due to the schedule of ProSpecT, but I still have no idea where we'll meet up.

As for Descent, I'm good for any evening (other than Thurs) past 8, so just let me know.

Descent was a lot of fun, and I think would go faster the second round we play. From the hero side, I really enjoyed my big beatstick (Steelhorns) who got some fun ability cards. It upsets me that I don't know the stats for every character, but it seems like the publisher wants to keep that secret, so I'll go along with it.

And Amish, I don't mind switching with you next game if you want to "hero" it up.

Ricksta and Jonathan, want to play a game of descent tonight? Also, if your g/f wants to play too, I have Carcassonne (The big box), Puerto Rico, Ticket to Ride, Settlers of Catan

(I haven't played Carcassonne or Ticket to ride yet, so I would be up for it, but I am being sucked in by Descent and would prefer that the most!)

Also, if anyone else wants to play, please let me know which day (Mon, Wed, Thurs) I can do all 3 if there is enough interest!!

I don't have ticket to ride, but I know that I may be able to get Lauren out and about for Carcassonne, if its either Puerto Rico or Descent or anything that's too complicated, you won't see us...

Regardless, I'm free from Lauren tonight, if we wanna get a game down, gimme a call...

(I know, not even married yet, and I'm a bit whipped when she can actually spend time with me...)

Just wait till she gets full swing into clinicals, I might try puerto rico...

Descent was fun tonight, but far too complex for Lauren to ever try, so unfortunately not a game I will be purchasing in the remotely near future.

I did like it a heck of a lot better than mordheim, but I just am still struggling with spending sooooooo long on one game... when I could have played like 3 different eurogames in that same time...

It was fun though Amish, thanks for inviting us over...

Hopefully Thursday during the day or Saturday is up for grabs, or even Wednesday evening...

Thanks a ton for coming and playing! It was a blast. I think maybe it would be better off with 4 heroes on some of those quests, so I definitely think we should try that out sometime.

Sweetcurse, please join us sometime. (Finrod too!) :: Oh, and anyone else, too ::

One weird thing about the way Descent works is the randomization of the ability cards. Our "tank" last night was also the acrobat, which seemed to make the character needed in two places at once. I wonder if allowing us to trade ability cards would make it easier to not get totally hosed and allow for some much cooler synergies?

As far as gaming goes, I should be good past 8, so just let me know what works best for everyone else.

(Spring Break rules!)

Jonathan, I agree that that made it much better for the heroes to not get hosed when you had more control over your skills/abilities. There is a rule I saw somewhere that got erratta'd or something (I forget where I saw it) that was you get your 3 cards, and then you can choose to send one back to the deck and get the next card. We could do that or do one card trade between each 2 players.

I think if we got 4 heroes to play, (hint hint sweetcurse & finrod) then the random abilities would be a fun thing to keep and still be balanced. I checked on the monster cards and going from 4 to 5 players only changes the monsters hitpoints +1 or defense +1 or on a couple cards both. So I don't think changing a skeleton from 3life to 4life will have as much as an impact as 4 heroes getting to attack. (Most times you killed a basic monster, it was overkilled anyway)

What do you think guys?

Lauren wants time with me tonight, so the only way we're gonna come close to finishing is promising not to keep playing descent, and moving on to a carcassonne, or zooloretto or something...

My newest additions are cathedral and container, both of which I think are awesome.

Jonathan, you might look into cathedral for your classroom it's like a fast chess game... Container takes about an hour to 1.5 hours, once you know the 4 actions.

(Otherwise I see that pouty face again...)

 I am confused about this first line in your post...

1) Lauren wants time with you tonight alone or playing a game with others?

2) Come close to finishing another game by not playing descent at all and playing another game, (or) finishing up the current descent game and pomising not to play quest 3?

3) Does this mean she wants to be with you tonight so we can play Descent on Wednesday? :D

We did play some cathedral, but mostly spent some time in a "marital happiness quiz" book that her mother is requiring us to fill out by friday.

I don't know if I can be there at 7:30 tonight, we've got an appointment with a potential wedding reception place at 6:00, and it's like one of higher probability places we're looking at, so it might be a while.

The player who had the most trouble understanding the game and blundered around in the beginning, ended up winning. My point being that is is very accessible for anyone.

We almost played Ticket to Ride last night, but played Carcassonne since none of us knew the rules to TtR. Hopefully we will play it sometime soon! Also, definitely need to get more games of Descent in. I have painted 2 figures so far!

I wouldn't mind coming out to Clear Lake if there was some interest, (also, you guys are welcome to come up to Houston as well!). I may do another race Saturday morning if my bike is fixed by then, but I should have some time to play Saturday afternoon.

Also, we need to get a regularly scheduled game night set up, and rotate what diff games we play. (We could even get multiple ones a week).

I will start making a list and comparing schedules, so please post here (in blue) when you are free, with changes that may occur as well

I am currently free about 50% of mondays, 25% of Wednesdays (Soccer game Rainouts), Friday Night, Saturday All day, Sunday All day.

She actually seems remotely interested in descent, because it is teamwork oriented...

She's working a 12 hour shift tomorrow... if it's in Houston, be it Jonathans or Coreys, we will most likely be there, at least for a little while...

If it's in league city, the only way I'm down is 12pm or so, get a few games in , and she'll be out of work.

So the jist is, without her, I am down all day, but if she's not tired when she gets out of work, she doesn't want to go down south to play...

Let me know as soon as you get less busy with things, and we can possibly plan a weekly meeting (alternating locations if wanted so not the same people driving far every time) and then you can let your significant other know of a weekly day you get off to game, and maybe she can decide a weekly day she gets off to go out with her girl friends :D

Involuntary things like Kids, work, or any other thing that I cannot think of really makes sleep sound like a beautiful word (and thing).

This is an interesting word. Is Descendants actually correct in this case?

I should be free saturday from around 1pm-6pm. (got plans for the night)

Which means I am recruiting descenders :D

If you dallas folks wanna come and play some descent in the afternoon, I would be welcome to have you. You could then hop over to another place for the night gaming you were talking about.

Anyone up for descent Saturday afternoon? 8)

Finrod...

We are playing Descent on Saturday, April 5th, at 1:00pm.
Mark your calendar!

Who else is up for playing on Mar 29th or April 5th?

 (Yes I do realize that this is a Heroscape forum... but Descent is my new passion for the moment)

That's a good date & time for me, I believe. The only thing is... my first priority in gaming is monthly game days with a friend who lives down in Hitchcock. He wants to play Descent, too, but I doubt he'll be willing to drive THAT far. We were planning the April gameday to be at his house, but it could be at mine...

Plenty of time to work this out.

He drives to League City, you drive the rest of the way to Houston. Everybody wins!

I will actually be at zube park that morning (35 miles northwest up 290 from my place), so it would be a very long drive for me to get to league city when the event is over, so I would prefer if we could do it at my place...? I wouldn't mind driving to League City/Clear Lake another day though!

Hopefully Jonathan & Sweetcurse & Ricky will join us well!

Yeah man, I'm always interested in getting some gaming going on!

We would need more than just the 2 of us for Descent though...

I'd be interested in coming down to your school on a tuesday or thursday, sometime...

Sweetcurse, that's a pretty awesome avatar... who did that?

AB, what about tonight?

Thanks Rick, I feel like I finally got the right one. My cousin did it for me as a B-Day gift (even better gift than TTR). The actual image is much bigger and has a hex floor and me running around with a lightsaber. But it was much too big so I cut it up to this size. Hopefully I can get someone to do some animation on the dice for me, like spinning around or something.

He's a published comic book artist in Mexico and is helping me do a comic strip too. I'm penning it and he's doing the art of course. Hopefully we'll have it done in the summer .

As far as playing here, maybe you and J can ride together. Tuesdays or Thursdays should be fine, though friday would be killer too. I have the perfect gaming table in my classroom.

I won't be able to do T/Th until May, as I am taking a class those nights. When does your school end btw?

An Amish Game Day!

Hey everyone, As Finrod, I, and some others were talking about playing some Descent on this Saturday. I am proposing that we make it a full fledged game day, with a schedule like:

1:30pm-3:30pm :: Risk/NexusOps/Battlelore (Turn Based Strategy)
3:30pm-7:30pm :: Descent (Dungeon Crawler)
7:30pm-9:30pm :: Carcassonne/Settlers/TicketToRide (Lighter Strategy)
9:30pm-Midnight :: Taboo/ApplestoApples (Party-ish Games)

Let me know if you are interested! If we have enough people, we can always set up multiple games at once (Even 2 simultaneous Descendings if Finrod brings his copy!) Also, if you want to only come to part of the day, thats fine, I will try to keep the schedule! (Goes for your fiance too Ricky!)

Hmm. 1:00 might be too early. But I'll find out by this evening... or at least I'll find out a little more likelihood.

Party-ish games? Bah. Humbug.

hmm. I can easily bring my Descent copy... and maybe A Game of Thrones? I haven't played it yet, either.

Also I have a copy of Pandemic on the way - hopefully before Saturday!

If you switched the first two timeslots, I'd have alot more chance of her coming for more than just the last two. She's actually remotely interested in descent... but anything turn based... forget about it. She has played some risk before... but on the computer, so tracking bits isn't a big deal.

Playing scape this weekend really made me miss it... :( I've got to find a way to assimilate her back into it.

But until then... here's my basic schedule, so it's out there...

School ends for the most part within the first two weeks of may.
Monday
School 10:00-11:00am, Work 12:00-7:00pm
Tues
School 8:00-11:15am, 2:30-4:00pm, No Work
Wednesday
No School, Work 10:00am-12:00pm, 1:00pm-8:00pm
Thursday
School 8:00-11:15am, 2:30-4:00pm, Work 5:00-7:00, School 7:00-9:00pm (online)
Friday
No School, work 8:00-12:00, 1:00-5:00.
Saturday
No School, work 8:00-3:00
Sunday
Usually homework day, and in and of itself is not enough, as I pick the most important assignments and do those.

Cramming 32 hours of work in with a full time (more than 12, 13 in my case) school schedule is horrible.

Let me take the time to advise parents with young children to please start saving for college now. The greatest gift/encouragement that you can give your kids when they are college age is allowing them to go to college and have them working less than 10 hours/week, just for their own spending money. Time management is so key, and I really just schedule a game or two a week just to keep my own sanity. I don't watch tv on a regular basis anymore, and I hardly pick up the PS2 controller. I can't even understand where I have time for a fiancee or even any homework. My GPA isn't shining, but I average B's in my classes. I can EASILY imaging having straight A+'s (different than an A at UH or AiH, as an A+ is the only way to a 4.0, 92 only gets ya a 3.7, because it's an A-, ask me how queer I think that is) if I didn't have to work, or only worked 1/3rd of the time that I do now. Parents, please give your kids time to be students when they go to college.

I'm also "cogitating" my summer scape and/or gaming gimmick, as I imagine I won't be taking summer school this year.

Any interest in doing the league again? We learned the first time that we need to start earlier, and need to establish some kind of standard for maps.

I was also thinking about organizing some sort of huge single elimination bracket, similar to the NCAA playoff, (possibly in lieu of the league) and 16 people can have 4 armies (one in each bracket) and if two of your armies get to the final four, regardless of what the brackets would dictate, you still get to play both games, instead of playing against yourself.

This way, a map is determined for each region, and the final four is played out on one map. Maps would probably be BOV approved or nominees.

Just thought I'd start airing those ideas out now, before they go stale in my own mind.
