View Full Version : "Cartoonizing" an image?
Rhetoric

I was looking into creating some new custom characters using the HCC program. I have some pics of some miniatures but would rather not have a photograph as the image on the Army card I create.
Does anyone know of an easy way to take an image and "cartoonize" it to make it look like a drawing? (To better fit in with the rest of my cards) I have Adobe Photoshop but haven't found an easy way to do this.
Thanks!

not any easy way i am aware of.
I guess you could paint over the lines with big lines and it would look like a stick figure

I've used some image editing software that did "oil painting" or "pastel" (unfortunatley don't remember the name of it -- it is an older product). These took a photo image and made it look like and oil painting or pastel painting. There were controls on how long brush strokes were, etc. Something like this might work - won't be a cartoon, but may get what you want. I'm sure photoshop has something along these lines.

Try Filter/Poster Edges. It's not as good as an illustrator, but it can fudge it for you.
You might also try shooting the mini you mean to use, clipping it out and placing it.
You might also just screw around with the filter gallery and see if something grabs you.

If you have Photoshop... You can try "Cutout" in the "artistic" filter folder. It should be a big image to start with though. If it's 72 DPI, change the DPI to at least 150 or 300 first. After you do "Cutout" duplcate the layer and on the top layer use "find edges". Play with the edge thickness until you like it and then set the blending mode for the top layer to "Multiply".
It's not great but it will give you a quick and easy comic book look - sort of.

Runehardt,
You really need to learn to step a little further back from your subject. Or; at least aim the lens a little lower, I mean, do we really need to see the top of her head?

Turn A Photo Into A Sketch For a Coloring Book Look in Photoshop
STEP 1 - Duplicate The Background Layer
First duplicate the background layer. Go Layer> New> Layer via Copy. Now you have 2 layers, the Background Layer, and Layer 1.
STEP 2 - Desaturate The Photo
With Layer 1 selected, choose Image> Adjustments> Desaturate. This gives us a grayscale version of the photo.
STEP 3 - Duplicate Layer 1
At this point you must duplicate Layer 1. With Layer 1 selected, go Layer> New> Layer via Copy. Now you have 3 layers, the Background Layer, Layer 1 and Layer 2.
Next you’ll be working with Layer 2.
STEP 4 - Invert Layer 2
With Layer 2 selected, go Image> Adjustments> Invert. This will make your photo look like a negative.
STEP 5 - Change The Layers Blend Mode To Color Dodge
In the Layers Palette change the Layers Blend Mode for this layer (Layer 2) to Color Dodge. This will make your photo almost completely white.
STEP 6 - Apply The Gaussian Blur Filter
Go Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur. When the dialog box appears start by moving the Radius Slider all the way to the left. Once you’ve done that you can start to slowly move it to the right. As you move the slider your sketch will start to appear. At this point take time to experiment and make sure you are getting the desired effect.
Bigger numbers create a more pronounced effect, but at some point this will turn your sketch back into a photo, which you don’t want, so when you reach that point simply nudge the slider to the left just a little and that should do it.
Experiment With Settings
This technique will also work with the Motion Blur Filter and the Radial Blur Filter. The reason I mention this is sometimes an image will not work as expected, and so you have to try different methods.
Afterwards you can play with the Brightness/Contrast of the image and maybe even use Threshhold to fine tune it some more.
Hope that helps. That will be $29.95 please. :D

Here's what I came up with. You did not convert the image to a black and white first. Granted it's not exactly like line art but it's a good starting place. With a little bit of drawing and erasing you could really clean this up nicely.

If you have or can get your hands on the latest version of Illustrator you can also use Live Trace to convert it. Set the options to color and the max colors to 256. That converts it to a set of color objects, that makes it look a bit tiled or stain glassed, instead of bitmap image. At that point you can select colors or whole color groups and change the colors or apply gradients easily, etc.
Or you could leave the settings at black and white for a whole different look, save it, put it into photoshop and apply some layer styles or other effects.
May not be quite as easy as you are looking for but lots of options there as well.

invalid IMAGE ID Rune
I have been lookinf online for a good tutorial to do this but most I find don't come out looking right.
Grish's has a little bit different filter setting then what I have tried (inverting the image)I will have to try it my self though

Another great open source software you can do this easily with is InkScape(I know, even the name is better!)
GET IT HERE
http://www.inkscape.org/
In Inkscape it is as easy as: File->Import.. Select the bitmap/photo and Path->Trace Bitmap... adjust some setting based on the desired result and your are done!

I may be wrong, but I think gorthan's referring to how many actual pages of threads did he have to go back and look through.
Either way, you're right. Huge :reaper:
