Lots of their RPG books are on sale but if you scroll down there is a bunch of games from their Silver Line for $5.

Kingdoms is supposed to be a good game, its by Reiner Knizia anything he makes is probably worth $5. Also Minotaur Lords and Scarab Lords are supposed to be good. I want King's Gate as well. On the list I have only played Atlanteon and its okay it was worth the $5 I paid at GenCon.

The FFG Fantastic Holiday Sale begins on November 21st and runs until Midnight on the night of Monday, December 4th!

Here's what I purchased for my son and I for X-mas/his birthday (Jan. 1)
Wreckage
Magdar
Arena Maximus
Atlanteon
Quicksand.
I went in thinking I'd buy 5 at the most. So I left off a few others. Kingdoms and King's Gate both look fun, but similar. I went with 5 different game worlds/atmospheres.

Even if they don't pan out as being any good. It was worth trying them for that price.
Thanks Nether!

I added the BGG link for Golf Mania and the rating to your post.

I have only played Atlanteon and only once. I can't really comment on it that much. Its a strategy area control game of sorts.

Like I said before, anything with Reiner Knizia's name on it is likely worth the $5, there are 5 games on the list by him. I'd snag those up.

Kingdoms is an excellent game, for $5 there's no reason to not purchase it. The game may not look like much at first - just laying down numbered tiles to try and have the biggest score - but every single turn is wonderfully agonizing. It's so very hard to set yourself up for good placement yet so easy to screw others over. Not a game for everyone but my friends and I absolutely love it. One of my personal favorites.

Minotaur Lords is also good. I tried it out once with a friend and thought it was very interesting. Essentially it's sort of a standalone CCG, sort of like how Fairy Tale feels. What I really like is how the two sides in the game have extremely different strategies in order to win. Fun stuff.

I actually just picked up Kingdoms a couple of weeks back otherwise I'd be jumping on this. Might put in an order for Arena Maximus, King's Gate and Madgar... we'll see.

Excellent! FFG had the name listed as a single word so, of course, the BGG Search Engine found nothing ...

So far I am decided on:
• Quicksand
• Loco!
• Arena Maximus
• Kingdoms
• King's Gate
• Wreckage
• Scarab Lords
• Minotaur Lords

For a total of around $51.52 including shipping (Retail would have been around $145.00)

Has anyone else who ordered stuff from FFG recieved any updated information on their order?

My order page still just says that the order was placed on saturday, and that it's still "in-progress."

Was just wondering if anyone else's order had a more up to date status, as it seems kind of odd that at 4 days since placing it, the order hasn't been shipped yet, and everything was listed as in stock when I ordered it.

Mine is still listed as "In Progress". They did note that they would be closed through the long Thanksgiving weekend. I am sure they came back to a couple hundred orders, give them some time to update. I do know my credit card was billed.

Now, Malechi, let's not BATTLE over this, but LORE has borne witness to the fact that when ships dock w/'scape, they dock on your side of the country. Being in the middle w/only Mexico for company and limited oceanic exposure makes for slow arrival times of shipping containers bearing goodies like 'scape, et al.

Doc, that's just mean. I mean, that's like if you just sat here and described how cool the rules are for Battlelore, or the incredibly, unbelievably high production values on the components. Or if you said how much Battlelore screams to be customized, with your own Lore cards or custom armies or custom Landmarks or adventures or rules. Or how you can sit down and play a full game inside an hour, and still be salivating at the idea of playing another one. Or how you get this five-inch-deep box so full of miniatures and cards and dice and hexes and markers and rules and boards, that you can barely get the box lid back on. Or how the rulebook is quite easily one of the best looking printed pieces I have ever seen, board game or not. Or how the rules are so ridiculously easy to read, so that for the first time in my entire life, I was disappointed to come to the end of the rules, and actually went back and read them again.

Because that would just be mean.

Some play results:

Magdar sucked. Lol. I mean, really. It just wasn't very fun at all. Played 1 game of it.

Frenzy was a lot of fun. Played like 5 games of it back to back.

We played 1 game of Quicksand and enjoyed it. Was really simple and light, but quite fun.

Playing Scarab Lords and Arena Maximus tomorrow, both look very good, and much more stimulating than anything we played tonight.

Sorry for anyone else who ordered Magdar. Dunno, it just seemed really boring and bland.

Ordered: Frenzy, Kingdoms, Scarab Lords and Minotaur Lords.

We ordered quicksand and played 1 game of it. Arena Maximus and Scarablords has kept our attention more, but Quicksand was a good romp, and I'm sure we'll play it again. Worth the 5 bucks, but not a game we'll play over and over, back to back.

We've had a couple fun games of Frenzy, but scarablords... we LOVE that game. I'm actually getting ready to order Minotaur Lords. 13 bucks with shipping is a steal, if it's like Scarab Lords, and can be combined with it. Fun.

And my apologies to anyone who ordered Magdar. Maybe you'll like it, but we sure didn't.

I caught the sale at the last second,
Glad I finally checked this forum haha

What did you get?

Asked from anotehr thread, thought it belonged in here...

I got
Frenzy
Arena Maximus
Scarab Lords
Senator
and the last one I am not sure.. but I think King's Gate

I didn't just get everything, I've been reading, checking out rules for a lot of these games for a while now... and I already own a huge collection of board games. Around 50 or so.
So I didn't want to just grab anything.

I was literally buying at hte last second, it was actually Dec 5th where I live, but I guess the FF site is closer to the pacific, I think I got my games like 5 minutes before it ended so I didn't think too much haha.

I am really glad I made the choices I made after hearing your reviews.
I decided Scarrab Lords over Minataur Lords, which from what most of you are saying was a good choice!

Has anyone played Senator yet?

Woohoo! My box came tonight while I was at class! I can't wait to play some games!

Ironically, I'm almost completely devoted to playing nothing but Battlelore until I burn out enough to play something else. My GOD is that game fun.

This is what I picked up from this sale. I'm going to dispense them out to my son for Christmas and his birthday. I know I already listed them on the first page, but I got the games yesterday and had a chance to look them over (without opening them) :

Wreckage (he's going to love this one. He's a Hot Wheels/cars fanatic)
Magdar (JJ made it sound as if it's a dud, but I'm willing to give it a shot)
Arena Maximus (love the different styled chariots!)
Atlanteon (thought my son would get a kick outta this)
Quicksand (This caught me in my Tomb mode, so I had to get it. Appears there's a Tarzan type character in the game)

And I went back and grabbed:
Frenzy!
Minotaur Lords
Scarab Lords
Maginor (the components looks very neat-o)

I also got the little catalog and wow, I'm really, really interested in this game:
Wings of War (http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/wingsofwar.html)!
I enjoy those early fighter bi-planes of WWI. Any of you guys play this game? I'm going to do some reviews research and see how it sounds.

I definitely dig Wings of War. It is super fun, I highly reccomend it. The simultaneous movenment and firing, as well as scenarios make it very fun and I think do a good job of giving you the feel of flying a WW1 fighter plane. I also like how you can play standalone expansions or mix and match them.

What about 150-200 or more?

Well, what I find hard, is I want many many other board games. But we all have the same amount of one thing, and that is time (yes I know some people unfotunately end up with less, but in a single day we all have 24 hours).

I could buy way more games, but really, I wouldn't enjoy myself more than I do.
Now, that being said, I will one day have 150-200 board games like you at this rate! I am only 22, so when my children are grown, well their rooms will likely become game closets haha.

So, to answer your question, if 50 = HUGE, then 150+ = 3 times HUGE, or radical, or awesome or something like that haha.

Anyway, the one thing that gets me is, I don't buy more games unless I make good use of the ones I have. So, when I do get that many, I will feel kinda bad letting some collect dust, because I am pretty picky about what games I get! (Unless there is an amazing sale on... hahaha)

December 6th, 2006, 02:21 PM
wow, 25 eh, I would have thought with that many games it would have taken at least till you're 30!
Its not the kids, (I actually have none YET!), its more because i have a wife, and not because she won't let me, but because I care about her more than to spend all my money on games haha

So that's pretty impressive.
I hope this doesn't become a good excuse for me to buy more haha.

Ah man, you may have just sold me on the game! My brother-in-law iwns a bi-plane game consisting of two illustrated b&w books. One book was a German pilot, the other, British.
It was WILD: you would decide moves, tell the other player, then you both turn to certain page in your own books. At times, you could literally see each other's character's faces in the cockpit!
When I saw Wings of War in the Endgame store in Oakland during our NorCal Game Day, it brought back memories of those game/books.
Jormi, I'll keep my eyes open for a cheap copy of WoW and the expansions. I think I'll try to get just the expansions up to WWI.

Just a word of advice, if you got both of the Lords games, play Scarab Lords first. We love it, and ordered Minotaur Lords a couple days after we started playing Scarab Lords, and were quite let down with Minotaur Lords. The artwork is not nearly as good, and the decks are not very balanced, as the Horde deck is pretty much unstoppable.

Just my opinion, though.

So I got my 5 games

Frenzy is what my wife and I played first.
I really thought she would kill me at this, because when we play Dutch Blitz (a fast thinking, multitasking game.. also called Nerts, or a few other things) she always DESTROYS me.

This is a game you'd play instead of like UNO, or speed or go fish. That's the level of play.
But the bets part is, it has a certain depth to it, that you could like have a bunch of friends over and still have fun having like a small tournament to crown the frenzy champion.

So I taught her to play, and its very simple. We played one match and I killed her pretty good. I don't think she got a point. But the second game I only managed to beat her slightly after the 3rd round haha.
The key to the game is to get a few columns the way you like it, and try to end as fast as possible..

The game really does take as long as it suggests, maybe less, I'd say 5 to 15 minutes. As long as the game's goal was to be a fast way to pass some time, they did it. But its not epic or anything like magic, or any collectable card game.

We played King's Gate next. The most surprising thing about this was the winning strategy was a lot different than I pictured it being.

My wife liked this game the best. I guess she just like cities and tile based games. (Carcassone, Settlers of Catan are her other two favourites).
This game is probably a lot more fun with 4 people than with 2 though. Don't be fooled by its relatively simple appearance at first, there are quite a few ways to choose a winning strategy, and at least one way to choose a losing one (I learned first hand).

They give the suggestion, its better to just finish the round and lose it so you can place the next round yourself. Well... if you've played this game, you know that's true! I ignored it for a while and lost horribly.

We had a party later that night which I brought all the games too. I taught Senator to a number of people there, and we played this twice that night.
This game is tough to get used to because all your strategies are completely based on what the other players might do. I love games like this in large groups because its incredibly hard to win anything without someone throwing in the assassin.
I won the first game because everyone had used all their influence and assassins and I had a few influence left, and no competition, so I took like 4 agendas in a row, which apparently is a lot.

Good game I suggest it to people who have a larger group of friends.
Unfrotunately it only goes up to 5 players, but it seems modifiable for more, or at least teaming up!

I also got Scarab Lords which is cool. My wife doesn't like these style of games much so it wasn't a good play test, and she probably won't play many more times.

Lastly I got Arena Maximum. This was the only game I did not have time to play that night. I wish I had opened this up for the party that evening too, but I didn't get around to it. I looked at it, and read most of the rules, and it does look like a good concept.

Loco from my wife. It was a good light easy to teach game.

Magdar from my wife. I haven't played it yet.

The Hobbit from my wife. I haven't played it yet, and I know it is going to be bad, but I am a Tolkien sucker:)

Scarab Lords from my wife. I haven't played yet, but have read through the rules and it looks pretty darn cool.

Kingdoms from parents. This one is very good. I can't wait for more plays

King's Gate from parents. Haven't played yet, but I am really looking forward to this one.

Thunder's Edge and Demon's Canyon from the in-laws. Haven't played, and I am afraid it migth be a whie til this one sees the table.

Inkognito from the in-laws. I want to get this one on the table soon.

Arena Maximus from the in-laws. This one looks to be quite a bit of fun, but I haven't played it yet.

Quicksand from the in-laws. Another one that is still unplayed.

Senator from the in-laws. This one looks pretty interesting, but it is still unplayed.

An alternative rule we use for Scarab/Minotaur Lords, is that the wife and me draft our decks. My wife chooses 2 cards for her deck, then I choose 2 cards for my deck, back and forth until we both have 30. It adds a lot to the game, not that it needs much, well, Scarab Lords, at least.

I thought for sure he was the Jungle Lord, but all the while I had been advancing the Botanist as a fake-out/card replenisher. Darn - He WAS the Botanist! My Zoologist was so close!

We tried Magdar last night. Stumbled a bit remembering to roll for Magdar's Wrath and then we had to quit for dinner. We'll try again later today.

Thunder's Edge

I would recommend staying far away from this game. I tried to play it with a friend of mine a couple years ago, and by about halfway in, we were openly mocking the game. Then we began mocking ourselves for playing it, and quit.

It has a ton of tiny little cardboard pieces to keep track of, slow movement, and, from what I remember, interminable combats.

It's worse than that, though, from my (probably tainted) memory.

The chits are little pieces of cardboard. And they don't fit in the hexes.

It's long and slow not because of plodding pace and manuevering but because units are mismatched, and cities are impossible to assault (keep in mind, memory).

I absolutely love Twilight Imperium, also by FFG, also a war game with many pieces and a slow timeline.

TE just made me sad.

Yeah, Twilight Imperium is not really classified as a wargame. It is a game that deals with war, but there is a specific genre of games called Wargames.

Thunder's Edge is more like these traditional wargames that sprang out of the old Avalon Hill and SPI.

They are always played with chits, which are little squares of cardboard or paper, and they are generally played on paper maps. The rules are usually very long and gameplay is even longer:) It takes a certain type of geek to enjoy them, and they are called GROGNARDS. I really am not one, but I have dabbled.

I've noticed with a lot of the FF games that the game creator's name appears before the game title.
Even on my Return of the Heroes game I delved into last night (sorted, read, but didn't play) I noticed the designer had top billing.
What are the reasons for this trend? Actually I can guess the 'why' for several reasons (I understand there are uberdesigners out there like Reiner Knizia and people want to follow his next project - is it a European thing?), but was just wondering if you guys knew when it started? Or is there a definitive answer?

InfinityMax
December 30th, 2006, 11:13 AM
I know that you can put 'Reiner Knizia's' on a game and double your sales. I think that's crap, because I don't really think he's the genius other people think he is, but there it is anyway.

Game designers, especially big names like Richard Borg, Reiner Knizia and Bruno Faidutti, are beginning to approach a sort of celebrity status. If I put 'Nicole Ritchie's Diet Plus' on a bottle of amphetimines, I can sell more than just 'Diet Plus.' If I make 'Johnny Depp's Hemorrhoid Cream', I'll sell the bejeezus out of it. And with gamers, they play a few games by a celebrity designer, and they realize that having this particular person on a project is a signature of quality.

Until they figure out that every third Reiner Knizia game is a total waste of money.

I´m sure Knizia has to make a living. Some of the games he makes, as with anyone else, are bound to be contractual garbage, made only to make a buck or under a contract. But considering how amazing Knizia´s good games are, I am willing to considering him a small genius. Not all of Einstein´s ideas were great, yet he was a genius.

Of course, I probably shouldn´t be discussing the merits of genius with the self proclaimed "Man-Genius." ;)

InfinityMax

Knizia does make some fantastic games. Some of the best games I've played were Reiner Knizia games. But some of the worst games I've ever played were also Reiner games. And it seems that there's a pretty reliable crap:gold ratio that hovers right around 1:3.

Like Maginor and King's Gate are Knizia games, and they're two of my favorites. And then Atlanteon is Reiner Knizia (from the same publisher as the other two), and it's absolutely horrid. Then you have Kingdoms or Scarab Lords (fantastic games) with a chaser of Lord of the Rings, published by Eagle Games, which was abysmally bad. Through the Desert (fun) and Hollywood Card Games (fun), then LOCO! (less fun than getting a flu shot).

And reports of my genius have been extremely exaggerated.

I've broken out Arena Maximus and read the rules. Have yet to play it, but I'm liking the theme/atmosphere a lot.
Here are the chariot cards to entice any curious gamers. I dig the artwork.

Really? Maybe I just need to play it some more or we were doing something wrong...we got it at GenCon for $5 and I wasn't that impressed by it.

Went up to the mountains yesterday and got to try Wreckage.
My poor son had to wait while dad read the rules and struggled with first-time mechanics. He had mostly lost interest by the time we were ready to start.
He did enjoy choosing weapons for his vehicle and this re-sparked his interest quite a bit.

Wreckage felt clunky and the cardboard pieces sliding around on the tabletop was a bit trying (consider a 7-year old navigating his vehicle, but instead moving every other piece by less-honed motor skills!), but my son and I waddled through it.
Seemed too easy to score the three victory tanks of gas.

I need to give this game another try and see how it runs.

After dinner him and I played the much loved Quicksand. It was an assured fun couple of games.

Tonight, after we got back home we played Magdar for the second time. This game ran much smoother than our maiden voyage of Magdar's lair searching for Mithril and gems!
It was actually quite fun for my son and he had lots of custom rules he wanted to implement for our next game - to say the least, I was impressed with him.

So for bedtime reading, I broke out a game I bought for myself for X-mas - Maginor. I know IMax likes this game and that makes me want to like it too.
The game components are gorgeous and brightly colored. By the time I had finished reading the rules, my son was sound asleep.
But i'm chalking that up to a long day.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to playing Maginor!

Still to play: Arena Maximus, Atlanteon, Scarab Lords, Minotaur Lords, and of course, Maginor.

By the way, I'm glad I was able to get these FF games for $5+ each. They're fun, but definitely not worth the heftier retail prices!

Thanks again Nether for flagging that sale for us all.

I had read that somewhere (BGG?) and my son had a couple he'd brought with him on the trip.
We tested their lengths - sure enough they were compatible with the Wreckage movement ruler!
We'll be giving the game another try sometime soon. He kept talking about it on the way home. :D

Well hey hey! I've been gone since Saturday, but got in a lot of game time with the family.

Atlanteon
I like this game! Interesting concept and the aquatic fantasy aspect could be any other 'skin' for this game.
We went out to dinner one night at a restaurant that allowed us to draw on the paper table cloth.

My son had a great idea and decided to draw the Atlanteon grid on the table! While we waited for our food, we placed the three castle/temples and drew our playing pieces, King, and #s 0-9. What a great idea!
Also a good game for those budding math skills...

Maginor
Oh man, We loved this game! I played my son one night and got my wife to join in last night. A fun game with beautiful graphics. It's better to play with more people as opposed to just 1vs1.

Questions:
:?: Can acquired spells be used more than once? We voted them as one-use-only spells.
:?: Each wizard starts the game with 10 symbol and wizard cards. Can these ever be replenished (besides from acquiring certain spells)? The direction make no mention, so we figured they're one-time only cards.

Arena Maximus
Hecka fun for $5!!!!
My son and I played this several times. He's fond of races in any form, so this quickly became a personal favorite for him.

Did you get any of those games, Newb?

I picked up about 6 games during the $5 FFG spree. Maginor, Atlanteon, Scarab Lords, Minotaur Lords, Delta V and King's Gate.

Glad you are liking Arena Maximus. I'm gonna break it out on the next non-HS game night. My favorite of the FFG Silver Line is Orczz. Talk about fun and you have to balance the screwage factor very carefully because you can all lose the game.

I love this game. Perfect amount of theme, great components, tons of fun. The strategic elements are awesome. One of the best Reiner games ever.

No, you only get to use a spell once. Same with the special cards. The only way to get them back is to grab the spell. I haven't read the rules in a long time, but I've played it a lot, and every resource can be used once. That's the brilliance of the cards - do you get an early lead, and burn up all your special cards, or do you hang on to your ace-in-the-hole cards and hope those key players don't fill up before you get a chance to claim them?

Man, I love that game.

I've seen Orczz in the catalog or on the side of the game boxes. I'll keep an eye out for that game.
How's Delta V? Looks interesting.
As does Through the Desert.
I read the rules for Scarab Lords, but didnt' get a chance to play this (or Minotaur Lords)
Maginor is awesome.

That's how we played it. We figured as much. It could make the game pace go a little faster to receive all 10 wizard/symbol cards back after depletion, but the game plays fine as is.

Yep! Halfway through one of our 3-way games, my son goes and dumps all of his symbol cards on a 10-point oracle further down the line. My wife and I were so busy trying to screw each other over and had thinned out our influence markers, that we didn't see it coming!
It was a ballsy, brilliant move by my son, if I do say so...
He went on to win the game, my wife was second, and I was very happy to bring up the rear.

As well, little HEH was wise to getting an influence marker in on an oracle another player had dominance on. He at least would get something when that oracle was scored.

~
So, to repeat myself, I do indeed like Maginor. The graphics are beautiful too. That was a huge, attractive incentive for me, but your earlier review of the game convinced me to pick it up.

Thanks for the recommendation, Imax
and Nether, thanks for flagging down that $5 sale!

The eight FF games have become our cabin games. I left them up their for the next vacation.

Man I feel bad....I thought everyone knew FFG always holds a Xmas sale starting on Black Friday. (Of course Imax had to remind me about it. :P )

I picked up copies of games I played for years. The only "new to me" I bought were Scarab Lords and A Maximus.

My kids love a Maximus. After about three games of me coaching on what cards to play tehy are getting the hand of it. The art work is what drew them in. They fight over who gets to be the Unicorn.

Scarab Lords: Now I am not a CCG guy at all. Just never got into a collectible system/play. I would have passed on this if Just John had not said to get it. That being said this game rocks. It's defiantely going to be in my carry on for every future airport trip. 3 sets of cards some counters, and a small board. A good 2 player game.
