G'day!

I'm a newbie to HS and to this forum. This seems like the best place to ask this question:

Has anyone taken the time to compile a chart which compares one unit against another? It'd be a big task IMHO.

Or, at the end of the day with all things considered, would you say that it all balances out anyway? Isn't that the principle of drafting - that the points system becomes a yardstick?

Like I said, at this stage I'm a total noob guilty on two counts, but I'm really getting hooked - and it's only been 24 hours post-purchase. :P

Cheers!

Welcome to the board Mr. Underhill. There have been charts compiled by members that outline abilities, but you might have to do some searching as I don't believe they have made the migration to this site. You might want to check the file listing on boardgamegeek.com to see if one was uploaded there.

There is one thing that Heroscape has completely succeeded at: balance. You won't find that one unit that can't be beat. There are so many combos in the game that you can draft to beat another combo. With few exceptions, the point values are very well chosen, and that really adds to the balance of the game as a whole. You picked the right game, sir!! :D

After I posted, I began to reflect on those aspects of the game that I hadn't yet considered. The combinations of characters really can make or break an army. Having a character with a high attack value but low defense combined with a character who confers a defense aura can make a big difference.

This isn't even considering the glyph factor either. :o

Now I'm in two minds about searching for character comparison charts. I'm concerned it may provide a shortcut for a journey that's well worth taking. :D

Also, we bought the game for our 11 year old son, so I've got to make sure I don't have any unfair advantage, otherwise it'll spoil his fun. :D

Thanks for the great welcome and very prompt reply!!! :)

Cheers!

I play with my 9 year old and don't worry about unfairly stomping him at all. I show no mercy. On the other hand I do let him know why I draft figures as I do; explaining my strategies in detail and sometimes offering counter-strategy. After the game ends I go over a battle analysis with him confirming what he did right and critiqueing where he can improve. At the same time I point out my own mistakes and tell him what I plan to do differently the next time.

In the beginning I beat him at least 10 games in a row (he was 7yrs old) but now he wins almost as often as he loses against me.

So, it's not good to shake my backside at him whilst taunting and laughing raucously?

Hmmmm. I knew I should've read that child psychology book instead of using it to prop up my computer desk.

I've also been acting as coach and referee when my 11 year old and 9 year old face off against each other. They're getting the hang of it already.

Master 11 has thrashed me about 5 times already. Great stuff, can't get enough of it.

Ciao!

GaryLASQ has a chart on his site that lists all the Life, Movement, Attack Defense and point values IIRC. The points are a good yardstick IMO, but the chart is pretty nice to compare units really quickly.

Now I'm in two minds about searching for character comparison charts. I'm concerned it may provide a shortcut for a journey that's well worth taking. :DIt is, I think. Do read discussions and stuff if you;d like, but some of the things said here you'll have to play the figures to actually grasp. What can be useful, when planning for mexpansions, is to ask a bit what expansions blanace out what other expansions: if you get the romans and Bleakwoode, but no other bonding squads, whoever drafts the romans is likely to win a lot of games for a while; however, if you get Orcs or Knights at trhe same time, you should be about fine.

Mr. UnderhillNot as in B.J. Underhill, I guess?

The comparison chart you're looking for should run in the third issue of the Codex.

Underhill is the name I use when travelling. :D While at home I'm just plain old Baggins. :P

This is good stuff to know.
