To register, please post on this thread or send me a pm. And be sure to mention if you have others coming with you who will be playing.
Registration deadline is Sunday, January 7
Date: January 13, 2007
Time: Board Setup - 10am, Tourny - 1pm.
Please indicate if you can come early to help setup boards, or if you want to help out in some other way!
Points: Bring your own 500 pt army, as well as dice, order markers and wound markers. Official HS figures only. No customs. Repaints of official figure are okay (as long as it looks SWEET)
Tournament Style: Swiss style, 5 rounds, 45 mintues each.
Maps: Maps will include official maps, official maps modified, and custom creations about the same size as an official map. Unlimited starting zones. We will not use any castle doors or glyphs. If you want a say in how the maps look, then come early and help build!
Scoring: Points are awarded only for what you destroy. Points are scored per figure killed for a squad or per wound marker for a hero. If you completely defeat your opponent, you receive 500 points, even if your opponent's army did not have a full 500 pts. All games are death-matches. No capture the flag, complete the quest, marry the princess or anything like that.
Age Limit: None! But there will be two tournaments running concurrently:
1. Ages Twelve and Under
2. Ages Thirteen to Adult
A BIG thank you to CurseYouKhan for organizing the 12 and under tourny!
Entry Fee: FREE
Prizes: TBA
pm me or OPrime if you want to donate something (HS products, dice towers, other games, custom minis, a new Playstation 3, or whatever you think your average Scaper would appreciate!)
Donations to date:
KMPags offers custom HS figures. His Hobgoblin customs at the RI Tourny were gobbled up quickly. You need to check his ebay store to see these customs! (lookup Heroscape KMP). Here's pix . . .

Also, rumors of a wave 6 set . . .
And finally, check out this insane HS table. Minotaur35 is donating a smaller version that folds up and sits on a regular table.

[Tournament Style: Round robin, Swiss style. 5 rounds, 45 mintues each.
Just to clarify, are you running this the same way we ran the first tournament?
I'm only asking because in a round-robin tournament, you play every other person once. So if 20 people show up, the tournament lasts 19 rounds. Which conflicts with a swiss style tournament and one lasting 5 rounds.
Also, if you want me to help out organizing the scoreboards and seedings again, let me know.
Pilgrim
November 20th, 2006, 03:30 PM
Yes, the way we ran the first tournament. I will update the front page.

Pilgrim
November 20th, 2006, 08:53 PM
Yeah, OPrime and I were talking and had a few thoughts:
1. the Swiss style does a good job of sorting out the top players, so really no need for a final four AND . . .
2. if we go 5 rounds, we should come up with a clear winner.
After doing the Sept Boston tourny and the Oct RI tourny (both of which were 4 rounds) we both felt that we could have played another round. After all, you travel all that way and set aside a day, get to see folks that you don't see that often. Why not play another round?
Plus with 5 rounds everybody plays as opposed to just the top 4 while the rest of the group trickles off.

Not that I am anywhere close to picking out an army yet, but do you have an idea on what the starting zone size is going to be? Or is there not going to be a limit.
With 500 points, I might need 40 starting spaces to fit my Dumutef x20 army.
Pilgrim
November 21st, 2006, 01:18 PM
Or 48 starting spaces for your 12X sword grut army!
Unlimited starting zones. I'll update the front page.

Really? Even if you shoot straight down route 93 to route 3?
You host a NH event and I'll be there with bell's on!
Part of my thinking in making the tourny 5 rounds instead of 4 is that if you are making a big trek to the tourny then you'll be getting more for your efforts. As long as it's a whole day commitment for you, might as well get in as much scape as possible.

The awesome thing about HS tournys is that they are unofficial and just more about playing with and meeting people you normally don't.
Do Not let your percieved skill level keep you away...Just come and have fun if you can.
This will be our third in the N.E. area and trust me when I say its just plain fun win or lose...I know cause I usually lose

Just to second what OPrime said, DON'T let your skill level keep be the thing that keeps you from coming. The fact that it's a "tourny" does not mean everyone is intense and out for blood. It's more like a Heroscape game day with some structure - that's all.
In the two tournies we've had in New England so far, we've always had newbs playing and they've always had a good time.

Ok, so I've been pondering over what to bring. After weighing in several really enticing options, I think that my army is in it's final stages.
This week, I'm going to finish up recruiting. Next week, the strict diet begins, and the jogging/flying to build up endurance. This Friday is our first scrimage, where they will participate in a three way battle for global dominance. Hopefully, it will give us a chance to see what we are made of as a team.
I'm happy to report that our captain from last season Brunak will be making a reappearance. Although, Clifford and his Big Red Army fans will be sorry to hear that the all stars, the marro warriors, are suffering from an acute bout of multiple personality disorder, and will be out for the season. Happily, we didn't lose our cheerleader.
Let's see Chad's flying sentinel army of doom win this time! Bring it, Chad!

Yeah, it was the Charos/Saylind/Denerick combo for 400 points. And people said that squads are overpowered. He placed 8th or 9th, out of 20+ with no squads.
Seriously though, I've been giving a lot of thought to the tourny scene and the viability of armies that I normally play, and I have to admit, I'm liking heroes more and more for the times when you are playing multiple games against different people with the same army.

December 8th, 2006, 11:57 AM
Braxas would have been a killer in the last tournament. Lots of blastatrons, gladiatrons, deathreavers. She would have had a feast.
All heroes . . . time to draft some shades!
We need to give out a prize at this tourny for "most fun army" so that someone who fields a fun army but gets smeared in game play still gets props for being creative.
For starters, to qualify as a fun army, you can't draft the Krav, Drake or Q9.........

Yep, the offer is definitely still open. I'm going to be swinging through Jaffrey to pick up BWS2K so the Keene area is right on my way. Actually, if you knew what my car looked like, and had really good aim, I could probably just roll down the window and you could leap in as I went by.
Actually, we were down in the Boston area visiting family in Natick. Natick is a little under 2 hours from Keene, so I'm estimating a little over 2 hours to South Shore Boston. We did pass some signs for the South Shore on the way home, and its making me all pumped to get down there again.
The army is all finalized, and all the kinks are (I think) worked out. Unless it drastically changes between now and then, its looking like I will have a whopping 6 figures in my army. Better hope that those defense dice roll true, or I'm gonna be hurting.
Shoot, now I want to bring a prize. I'll find something.

Our top story today, Ullar's Vipers were put through rigorous training yesterday... They slaughtered the all marro army in what was meant to be a training mission for the upcoming tournament, known as the Beantown Beatdown II.
Sources say, the tragic falling of the marro's were due to fits of rage carried out by the blood thirsty Venocs. Reports indicated that there was 1 round of 5 consecutive frenzies and a 2nd round of 3 consecutive frenzies, during this training session...
Reports have also said that a lonely Venoc Viper, blessed with divine luck managed to escape death 6 times! It appear's that the trainer's girlfriend had 4 marro warriors who all drew blanks when attacking this mighty reptile. The following round, dodged 2 more attacks before being met with his demise. It is reported that this particular viper was avenged and that a memorial statue is being built in his honor right here in Valhalla.
The Venocs and Armocs were interviewed last night and this is what they had to say, "Yeah! we totally owned those alien freaks! We totally got this tournament in our hands!" "yeah bring it on shades, you got nothing on the venocs!!!" "Yeah, bring it on you 'All Hero' types, we've got Mittens on our side and that trophy's ours!" "Yeah!"
And there you have it... Up next on News Center 230, sports!! Do the Sentinels have what it takes to make it into the super bowl this season? find out right after the commercial break.

Seriously, Chad stomped me last time. The only redeeming feature of the day was the Marro warriors ambushing the 4th Mass for 70 points, and then killed two Sentinels , which was the same number that the other 350 points in my army killed.

Yeah, those stupid blue dice. I swear, every time I start thinking "Alright, attack this time. Be sure to attack." but then I glance over at my lovely blue dice, and they all just stare at me, shield side up...
And I think to myself, "You know, if I roll enough shields, it won't matter how bad my army is at attacking." Talk about deceiving ones self.

During a practice session, I water-cloned a Marro warrior back on to the board and that got me to wondering. How does that affect the scoring when a destroyed figure is returned to play? I guess the same question would apply to wounds healed by Kelda.
BWS2K
December 13th, 2006, 08:27 AM
As I recall its points awarded for the status of play at the end of 45 minutes. There is also, I believe, a stipulation that if you play with Kelda you have to play at the kids table but I'm not sure about that... Lemme see...
[Checking rules...]
Oh yeah here it is:
Any player who uses Kelda, Drake or Syvarris is a weeny. They must therefore play at the younger tournament until they come up with an original army design that does not include any of those characters. (article IV, Chapter 5 "Weeny Armies")
~~BW, getting in trouble again...
Pilgrim
December 13th, 2006, 08:50 AM
BWS2K is correct. A player earns points for each figure killed/wound inflicted at the END of the round. So in effect if you re-clone a marro or heal a hero you are taking points away from your opponent.
Regarding the mindshakle - mindshakling (or soul devouring) an opponent's hero is the same as destroying that figure as far as scoring is concerned. However, it does not work the other way - the mindshakled figure does not add any points to your hand. So if I mindshakled your Braxas but you end up destroying my whole army plus the mindshakled Braxas, you don't score 710 pts. Still just 500.
BWS2K also forgot to mention that anyone who drafts Kelda does have to wear a nurse outfit during tournament play.

I'm still afflicted with trauma from Syvariss at the last beantown beatdown, so I'd like to hear what are the penalties for Drafting him in the Weeny Army Handbook.
Weeny Army Handbook, page 121 states: "Any player who brings the character Syvarris to any tournament has forfeit his or her rights to respect during said tournament. Other players may, at any time for any reason, flick said Syvarris character from the board and onto the floor or into friendly figures of Weeny Player. Also, any successful attacks by Syvarris are met with shouts of 'WEENY! WE GOT A WEENY PLAYER OVER HERE!' If Weeny player somehow acheives victory in the match/tournament, it is accepted that it is only because of Syvarris and he or she is promptly disqualified."

Terrain and luck played major roles in the outcome. The map was split in half by a massive castle wall and Theracus "carried" Sylvarris to the top of the wall in the 1st round. The map was custom made for the Syvarris/Theracus combo. Matt's army had only one ranged figure and most of his army (Romans and Greeks) had to cross a river to get to the base of the wall.

Yeah, I think that this time around, if we have any random calstle walls hanging around, then we shouldn't allow people to fly up on top of them. I don't understand the reasoning behind the summoning interference on the walls, but allowing people to stand up there. I think the levels with the ladders and actual walkways were fine, but when using the walls primarily as LOS blockers, it shouldn't be allowed.
I seem to recall that in my final game I parked Raelin up on top of a random wall piece, and she was untouchable the entire game. Plus, with the targeting marks on the walls, she could see everyone. I felt kinda bad, but it was funny to see her hop from one wall to another to keep everyone protected :)
Now, if you covered all the tops of the walls with lava, I would totally be up for allowing people up there. If Saylind somehow survived the trip up there and summoned the Obsidian Guards, then they would have a field day up there flinging lava. Maybe that way someone would actually draft them.
In an unrelated note, why are they called the Obsidian Guards? They don't look black to me. Maybe they are uncooled obsidian?

I think the "somehow" in this sentence is referring to the question "Who would ever bring Saylind to a tourney?"
Actually, my beef is that two-space characters can't fit onto a two-space wall top with battlements (try it, Charos gets ticked every time) and that played a big roll in my last game. It was on that evil lava mountain and walls map - there was virtually no adjacent spaces on the same level not lava and he couldn't fit up top. He is a king you know, it was very embarassing.
Besides, Weeny Army Handbook clearly states on page 345, under famous quotes of Valhalla: "A wall without a ladder is a rock." -Mortimer, disgruntled castlebuilder for Utgar.

From the main site Runa looks like Evil Raelin in the comic. Interesting. Hey, with the zombies - couple things:
1) They can take out Marro Warriors and prevent them from cloning theoretically, yes?
2) Does it only work on humans or anyone? I don't think you'd get a zombie from a Soulborg or someone...realistically speaking that is...
3) Is it just me or does Krug look a lot less impressive when standing next to Jotun? It's nice that he can throw friendlies, but I think Jotun is just a point-hog. 225pts? Man, I think its a bit much... 8 attack even! Even if he's half of your army you'll probably be alright except maybe against, what, some sort of frenzied vipers or maybe like the Roman Archers' special. Anyway, he'll probably be in the next edition of the Weeny Army Handbook.

We need to develop some bonus point system for the tourny, like . . .
If you draft kelda - 200 extra points to your grand total
Dund - 400 extra
Coolest themed army - 300 extra
Something like that to encourage innovation. Or maybe we ban certain figs.
Just thinking out loud . . .
B:T:L Matt
December 15th, 2006, 12:41 PM
I dunno about banning figures, but I think there should be a single prize that gets awarded to the most unique army voted by the participants.

It'd also be cool if there was an award for say, "greatest comeback".
BWS2K
December 15th, 2006, 01:39 PM
2x Minions
I'm not sure there is a word in any dictionary that effectively captures my hatred fof the minions. Ask Bobbo.
In other news, I agree whole-heartedly with the "Best Comeback" award or for awarding the most unique or daring army or something. All zombies is not original, IMHO. Original would be a combo of Deathstalkers, Gund, Hounds and maybe, what, Nubian Wolves led by Khasomet. Call it "All Dogs Go to Valhala" army or something. Or maybe combo of gladiatrons, blastotrons and X17. Or all gladiators might be interesting, but also boring...
There you all go with Kelda again... I don't think you should get EXTRA points with her seeing as you would already be DENYING points to opponents by healing friendlies. Maybe an all-kyrie army would be cool, but then that's just silly.
The real problem with all this is objectivity. I'm not watching all the other battles to see the other cool things going on, I'm paying attention to my amazing strategies...so I think I should just get 100pts for that. Anyway, Bobbo and I are coming from NH so we should get 50pts at least for that guys, come on now... :D
~BW
P.S. And an all dragon army is ri-donc-ulous so don't even try. Go with Snipers, Viper scouts, Theracus and the Venoc Warlord for the Scouty Army. The "Who Needs Defense?" team. AH! So be warned. You are officially on notice. I must say, BWS2K does really hate the minions. With a passion that bewilders me. I don't know what they ever did to him that makes him hate them so.
Greatest comeback would be a good prize, but there would have to be a judge that could award it, and I'm pretty sure that all the judges are also participating. I think it would be cool, but impossible to judge.
I do like the most unique army or most thematic army. One of the requirements should be that the army has a name, and the name and the members of the army should relate somehow. If when we submitted the armies someone typed them all out with names, I think that could be a cool vote at the end.

2) I wouldn't mind so much but he used a live chicken for this. His chicken ate one of my gorillas.
3) Mispronouncing my name during the belch. He did it twice even after I corrected him, so that constitutes taunting. That's 15 yards and an automatic first down.
4) Um .... that was me.
:jawdrop:
I believe that if he does this again we will have no choice but to hit him with the dreaded "arrow grut substitution" penalty. According to rule 3.14.159.265 that means he will have to replace one of his attack dice with an actual living arrow grut for the entire tournament. It's harsh, but fair IMHO.

Alas, I stand before all Valhala a humble bumble.
FYI my army last time did have a name, I think I said it earlier, and that would pretty much have to be a requirement I think to getting that coveted Coolest Army. Also, we should hand out a Weeny Army award.
In fact... how about this deal compadres:
Everyone has to bring a prize (could be a printout on an index card, not necessarily figures or something expensive) that they have predetermined to bring. For example, since it is my creation, I may bring the Weeny Army badge. At the tourney the point board can have a little section for badges earned. If I play against or happen to see a player worthy of my badge then, perhaps at the end of the day, I will award said player by pinning my badge on his or her badge section. If there is an accompanying figure or other prize it may also be given at that time. Maybe some slight modification is in order, but what do you think? All the "prizes" have to at least be a small badge for the board.
P.S. Last time Joe (the other Charos player, I have a pic!) was there, is he coming this time?
P.P.S. We can even have a Most Badges Earned badge!

Hey Egg, try this explanation for your wife... "Honey, I'm going to be doing a bit of travelling, and working hard y'know... I need some "chill" time, to hang out with my friends." If that doesn't work, then you're on your own my friend!
Pilgrim - wanting to talk about making me cry, what made me cry this past Saturday was when Oprime "Stone Stared" my wound-less Q9. There he was, making ground beef out of a few of Oprime's units, and there comes along the queen of the undead and BAM! rolls an 18!

Ack, NO! That sets you up nicely for the "Aren't I your friend?" or "So what little time you have at home you want to go spend with other people?" which the can only get you in trouble.
Personally, I'd go for the "You know honey, I'm going away soon, and you are going to have to take care of the kids (only say this if you have kids). Why don't I give you the Saturday off? I'll take the kids and we will just get out of here."
Plus, I'm sure things will be hectic with you gone, and she probably would appreciate some time off. Plus, tell her to be out of the house at 4:00 (or whenever this thing is supposed to end) and clean the house and buy fresh flowers. Then you can have a guilt free day of Scaping, and be meeting your wife's needs in the process. Score!
Unless you don't have kids. In which case, it's near impossible.

The first name line (in the picture, "Bistro") will be your name, or what you'd like to be called.
The second line (in the picture, "MrBistro") is your Heroscapers.com name, or your relation to a HSer (such as "Friend of TehFattestNinja)
If you are bringing people who are not a member of HSers, please let me know their information as well.

I got a couple questions. I hope to know before the 7th if I have the day off to join, but in the event my work doesnt post the schedual in time I dont want to miss out. If I do get the day off, which I should, the only thing left is a ride, which I think will be taken care of one way or another. So basically theres a great chance Ill be there, but I may not know before the 7th.
Also about Jims badges, how much notice is needed for those? Obviously more notice is better, but like I stated above theres a chance I may not make it. I wouldnt want you to take the time to make one and then not show but if its better and not a big thing to make one just incase Ill give you my info.

No minimum point value. Since you get 500pts for defeating your opponent anwyay, there's no strategic advantage in, say, fielding a 250 pt army thinking "Well, at least I'll keep my opponent from scoring big!"

If it's simply a matter of not having figures available, I'm sure someone could loan you a Dumutef Guard or Swog Rider, so the 25 points aren't wasted.
Unless you're using an all disciplined or all valiant army, there's no reason an army shouldn't be at least 480 points. But, if she wants to run light, that's fine.

Alright, you can sign me up. We will be arriving in Boston on the 12th at about 10:30pm. Now to test out some armies.
WOO HOO!
Can you bring some snow? We haven't gotten any...
Do you need help getting from Boston to the tourney?

Sorry, we've only gotten about an inch so far this year and it's all gone.
We're staying in Braintree so, I'm thinking that we can find our way from the directions on page 1.
Thanks.

If you decide to stay in Braintree for the long-term, I can give you a good deal on a condo...

And I can suggest a good therapist who you might want to talk to about said purchase...

Great news. Is it just you playing or your girlfriend as well?

Just me. She has not played much and does not want to participate.

Is she going to hang out at the tournament with you? Would she be willing to play if we asked nice?
It's always nice to have someone who there who doesn't mind if they play or not. If we end up with an odd number of players, they can step in and keep someone who wants to play from having to sit out a round.
We never know who'll actually be able to make it or not day of. There's a rumor that Bistro's car won't let him cross the Mass/RI border.

She said that she would be in the swimming pool at the hotel while I was playing, but I'll bug her about it for a while and see if she'll give in.

Nah. Let her enjoy the vacation.
If she knew how to play and was going to be hanging out with you at the tourney that'd be different.

Hmm, we do need one more person don't we? Y'know I seem to recall a few months ago when an OH tournament was being run, a certain admin dropped us a note reminding us that the NE wasn't too far a drive from her tournament. As I recall this same admin enjoys travelling to out-of-state tournaments. Hmm. Say, who moderates this forum?

Ha ha. Thanks Codeman, I will do my best to represent us. I was even thinking about buying some old coveralls and a straw hat to wear. Considering that this is a spur of the moment kind of thing, I haven't practiced at all. Maybe I should use your tournament army.
Thanks Oprime. Right now all that I need is recommendations as to where the best seafood restaurants are.

In the mall right in Braintree... Legal Seafood. A little pricey but worth it. Their Sashimi appetizer is fantastic (if you like Sashimi). Great Clam Chowder... there motto is "If it isn't fresh, it isn't Legal."

Yeah, Legal is the way to go. You gotta try their clam chowder (served regularly at presidential inaugurations) and I love their tuna steak cooked medium rare.

ok so, now we definatly need to have a trophy.
that way if Supergeek takes it all he can show off the hardware when he gets back to Iowa. :D
I'll see what I can come up with....consider it "being worked on"

That would be great... Then not only can I root for our local scapper I can also cheer on "my" army. Again have fun and I will be watching this thread for the results.

Could you please add my son's friend Zach to the tournament list (11 years old).
Thanks,

I convinced my son to play in the 12 and under group. So we are heading to the store today to get some additional figures so we will be sure to have enough. (Nice excuse, huh. Even encouraged by my wife to get him to participate.)
I knowt the point total for the army is 500. Do I have to feild the same army each round? Or can Ihave multiple 500pt armies and decide based on the opposition which army to play? Or perhaps a XXX point value sideboard that can be swapped out? That was not clear in the 500 pt army rule
Pilgrim
January 6th, 2007, 08:34 AM
Great question. One 500 pt army for the whole game. No multiple armies and no sideboarding.

I'll be attending as well, just finding out today if my friend will be playing or merely spectating.
*I like the no sideboard idea. Takes more strategy to develop a 500 point army when you know you have no way to change your lineup

wow this tournys gonna be huge....
put my friend Joe on the list, got a commitment from him to play.
Also I have convinced my wife she is desperatly needed and has agreed  to be the stand in incase of an odd # of players :D so no worrys ....

Between myself and Pilgrim we have an abundance of figs. If you or your son want someone in your army that you do not have just let us know.
we will bring them for you to use in the tourny.
I know in the past that Asmiles/Kahn have been able and willing to do this as well.
bottom line..Don't go without, just cause you don't own...

I'd like to sign up and play as well. I finished tied for 6th in the last tourney as a total newbie. I'm sure my additional experience since then will destroy my beginner's luck and turn me into roadkill, but the tourney experience is still fantastic.
Last time I fielded the total vanilla army (Syvarus, Raelin, MBS, the base samarai, and Drake). I'd like to go with something with a little more flair this time around. Has anyone had success fielding a big bad type army, like 2 of the big dragons? Or is it too important to spread your army out with squads in order to have plenty of hits?

I know back at the GenCon tourney Lilnewbie (I think it was him) had an army composed of just Braxas and Charos. Did decent with it too. It would require a bit of finesse to play, but might be great fun.

Okay folks, we are officially at the half-dollar mark for registratioin, with a day to go before registration closes.
50 players
What was the GenCon attendance? Texas? Ohio Swogg?
Could this be the largest HS tourney to date?
I sent a pm to GB to find out how big those events were. Not that I'm competitive about such things . . . .

Wow, just when I thought I was getting close to finishing the name tags...
Please, anyone who hasn't yet done so, send me your real name (or whatever you'd like to be called) as well as your HSers username so that I can finish up the name tags. I'd like to have the information by Wednesday. Otherwise you'll get a blank one and write in your own name. :D

Okay, so would a few of you volunteer to take pix of the tourney? Like, a lot of pix - prizes, players in action, etc. I really liked what Pags did at the RI tourney taking pix of the players receiving their prizes. Stuff like that.
If this is potentially the largest HS ever, then we ought to document it well.
