Just checked the poll (Chicago time 10:00 pm) and the new poll is up.
I voted for the Heavy Gruts and at this moment in time, the Heavy Gruts are the runaway favorites with 23%. In my opinion, this is cool because it means that (among the people who voted so far) players want to see common squads. More large-scale battles rather than individuals fighting.
Now if we could just get more army men.

All the samurai (including the hero) are sporting bows. They will be unique.

Logically, I dont Hasbro would bring up the thought of a possible dwarf figure w/o there actually being one. Ill bet that Hasbro knows that even suggesting that Eldgrim may possibly be a dwarf then later confirming his Viking-ness would make everyone dissappointed. I also don't think that they'd just release just another Viking hero alone from more viking counterparts.

I was thinking the same thing, but the "xxxx-grim" name argument is also pretty compelling from the Viking end. Let's dissect this further, shall we? First we must calculate the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow...

"Craig, when you grow up you should make a hex based miniature war game and call it HeroScape." and He'd say to me " Colby, that's the dumbest idea I've ever herd." So long story short, I can tell when he's joking. And he was not joking, its a viking.

I was thinking the same thing, but the "xxxx-grim" name argument is also pretty compelling from the Viking end. Let's dissect this further, shall we? First we must calculate the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow...African or European?
Well, a Viking would be too heavy for a European swallow to carry, so perhaps it is a dwarf.

Huh, the new Kyrie are soldiers? Marcus is the last class boosting hero I would have expected to get new units (given that there are good many soldiers already)... still, I suppose I wasn't too far off guessing the Kyrie might be Ashigaru...

So, not to burst the feeling of celebration, but do we actually have any ideas on what these powers of these units might be? (According to the poll.) It seems Ke-Mo-Shi will have some marro plague type power. It also seems like the ghosts might have an interesing power.

I've always thought it was a Dwarf Hero, but I agree the 'grim'ness of the name is a good argument towards a viking character in line with Thorgrim.

I believe 6 will be much like Zanafor's. It will have a few units that folks thought would be great but will later forget about. It will also have many units that will become common in the fact that each person will play those figures frequently.
I see units like the Shades and Runa (depending on ability) becoming the next Krav or Drake (maybe even in the same army, ).
I see units like Imperium and Eldgrim having a place, but going the way of the monks from JO in less than a month.
Kaemon Awa and the Tagawa will have a steady use, but will only see heavy play with the dedicated Einar fans.
The Moridan will have a huge blowout at first but after a few monthes some folks will wonder why they have 8 sets of them when 4 work just as well, :D
Depending on her cost I can see Ke-Mo-Shi taking the place of a few Marro heros (can I hope she's a Warlord without being punched).
Empress Kiova.....each time I see that name I think green. I'm certain she will be Einar, but I just can't shake the feeling that she will somehow help a few Ullar units.
All of this is just mearly a "feeling" and nothing more not sure why, but I am sure of one thing.
If all of the "Undead" figures in this set aren't Vydar, I'll cry (yeah I know Utgar gets a little of everything).
Out of everything, I think Teamski is right. I believe this set will take the title as best booster, and not because it has the best units or best sculpts, but because I believe 6 has a little something, that makes everyone happy.

I voted for the Runa lass, on the assumption that Runa = the badass swordless Utgar-looking kyrie. Definitely my favorite sculpt of the whole set. C'mon, she looks like an evil priestess or something, you gotta love that. And some sort of Mitonsouly high risk, high gambling factor special ability definitely sounds like it would be fun to play with.
As for the dwarf/viking thing, I'll believe it's a non-dwarf viking when I see the card. (I'm assuming that no one's gonna try and fake one after the last time that sort of thing happened... ;)) Not only does the figure conform visually to the archetypal Tolkien fantasy dwarf, just saying that it's a viking that happens to be short is a rather unlikely explanation because significant height variations amongst humans are very very rare in fantasy mini games, especially in cases where it could cause confusion with the archetypal 'wee' races. What's the point of making a figure that looks exactly like a dwarf, only it isn't a dwarf? I find it much easier to believe that those present with Craig misinterpreted his comments and/or tone in a potentially loud, crowded, perhaps slightly chaotic setting. Like, some people say he couldn't have been joking because he didn't laugh... meh, I say sarcastic jokey things without laughing all the time. If any of you actually talk with him regularly then you'd be in a position to know when he's serious and when he's not most of the time, but then, if you were in that sort of position, you could just ask him again for confirmation instead of relying on that one conversation, so to me that says that y'all ain't in regular contact with 'im.
You can't rely on Wikipedia for information that might be contested or new. I mean, take a look at the fanfiction.net entry right now, lol.

Dwarves are often depicted as very viking-like because they are based on Norse mythology. He looks like a stereotypical dwarf because he looks like a stereotypical viking. The height thing is pretty hard to tell as there is no picture with a neutral camera perspective. One thing I'm sure of though - he definitely weighs more than a coconut.

not positive if it's known for sure this is how they are packaged, but on the HS wikipedia it is listed
Heroes of Durgeth
Zombies
Archers and Kyries
Shades and Orcs
IIRC this is also how sandra was informed they would be packaged...
Yeah, and last month it said the wave would be called "Markar's Wrath". Very reliable
This is also how the sets are listed on FunAgainGames.com. So I think these groupings can be labeled as 'true' at this point.

What?!? Are you assuming they weighted the plastic or something? None of my small Heroscape figures weigh more than a coconut!
Or did you perhaps mean half a coconut?
Taelord
November 21st, 2006, 12:29 PM
I think he meant a coconut husk. because the ratio of husk to innards of a cocconut is 3:1 and a Heroscape figure wieghs roughly 1/3 the wieght of a coconut. did that clear matters up?

Well that explains it! You're right Taelord. I forgot that I had made macaroons the night before I performed my experiments. Furthermore, the liquid to solid mass of the coconut is a further 1:1.5, rendering the husk alone a mere 22.222% of total mass.

Some aren't so sure that the new Orcs are common.
Like me.
In fact, now that I know they are called "Heavy Gruts" I'm even more inclined to think they are elite or specialist, and thus unique. Plus if the soul stealing Shade power is as cool as it sounds, it may be a unique ability.

Because neither of those words are "Heavy"
Heavy to me implies that they are a bit more elite or specialized....not just cannon fodder.
Plus their being packaged with the Shades make me think they are unique, unless the Shade power is kind of weak.
It's not a certainty, just a thought.

3. I believe Rob and Craig frequent this site often or how would they know there was speculation of a dwarf?
.............outtakontroll
They were repeatedly asked this question at Gencon, by myself and others. That's how they know about the speculation.
Oh, and to those that think the wave isn't called Dawn of Darkness or is packaged as follows: Zombies, Kyries and Archers, Shades and Orcs, Heroes....we have more evidence than Wiki. Wiki was put up after we got the info from HMG, Funagain, and other sources. I think it's quite likely that the packaging is correct seeing as how Hasbro is apparently telling retailers that those are the titles.

Go to the new poll on the official site.
http://www.hasbro.com/heroscape/content/poll.cfm
There are the:
Zombies of Moridan: mmmm Brains!
Shades of Bleakwoode: Devouring Souls is fun!
Ke-Mo-Shi: Her Toxic skin should be a great addition!
Eldgrim: Is he a dwarf? is he a viking? Only time will tell.
Tagawa Samarai Archers: Ranged Samarai??? Einar armies here I come!
Heavy Gruts: The name says it all!
The Einar Imperium: A squad of all kyrie souldiers!
Empress Kiova: What is her Gift?
Runa: Any figure with the word Mitonsoul in one of their special powers is a winner!
Kaemon Awa: Quik Releasing his Arrows away!
I love that a "children's" game has a figure that eats brains and another that devours souls. Wholesome. :-P
I'm thinking Zombies are for Vydar, but I could easily be persuaded that they are for Utgar...wouldn't surprise me in the least to see that red card for them. Mmmm....brains.
Shades I think are for Vydar, but Ullar would be my second choice. Soul-devouring seems more Vydar-like though. I think they may be unique.
Ke-mo-shi is of course for Utgar. Toxic Skin solves the question some had about her Marro Plague ability....it must just be similar in wording or effect. I know I wasn't the only one wondering how they'd finagle the wording of giving a new figure Marro Plague without having to errata the cards of the Wulsinu to make her immune to their plague or put some really awkward wording on her card. New power solves this. No mention of her actions from the comic, but I think she'll have a second power that ties into that.
Eldgrim....I still say he's a dwarf for Einar. They are teasing us too much with that Dwarf thing. Plus he's tiny in person, not even 4 hexes high. A cheated height of Small 4 wouldn't surprise me. They're mocking us!
Samurai Archers....I think these are common.....the question marks make me think their class will actually turn out to be Ashigaru, despite the historical innacuracies some are concerned about. We've heard nothing about ranged counterstrike and I don't think they will have it....too powerful unless they really do some odd tweaks.
Heavy Gruts...I think they may be unique. I'm picturing slower moving, non disengaging Orcs with higher attack and defense than Blade Gruts. I'm thinking they are "Orc Warriors" so that they get the boost from the recently released Ornak.
Einar Imperium....I think these are common. I wonder if the class really is "Soldier" or if that's just a tease. Having them be soldiers would be nice...a fun little boost for Marcus. Odd that there's no mention of their rumored powers. I wonder if that info was off base.
Empress Kiova....gotta be the Einar gal, since Einar has an Empire now it seems. Makes sense given their "Imperial" type troops (Romans, Japanese). I wonder if her full name is "Empress Kiova, the Kyrie Warrior" or if she will be the Kyrie hero that breaks that naming trend? I wonder if her class is Warrior or Empress or something else?
Runa....she's the Utgar gal. I wonder if she will be dropping the "Runa, the Kyrie Warrior" convention that we've grown so used to. Her Mitonsul power I'm thinking is in the title of an ability. Perhaps she has an Aura of Mitonsul or some such? Maybe those that specualted on an Aura of Pain weren't far off the mark.
Kaemon....I wonder if Quik is a typo. Probably is, but ya never now. I'm picturing an ability similar to Rapid Fire, but who knows (besides all the testers on this site of course!). Counterstrike or no counterstrike? I think he will probably have an ability similar to Agent Carr's sword of reckoning, as a way of preventing him from being a pansy in close combat.

well, i'm with noodles on this one. Could care less about names. I want some stats. We know what they look like, who cares what they are called? Until we get some stats. Anything.
As for the dwarf. who cares if he's a viking or not? Can't he be both?
Heavy Gruts. Probably going to be 3 defense with the same 2 attack but move of 4. With some weak special ability but cheap drafting points. maybe 10 more than grut orcs.
What about the Highly detailed unique samuri guy? I didn't see much about him on here.
I have to say, wave 5 did not impress me, with any sclupts. Could have cared less when it was comming out. As far as this wave goes. I have much anticipation for it compared to other waves.

The names tell us a few things, or at least hint at possibilities. Plus the little blurbs..."Toxic Skin" etc...give us some hints.
As for the Samurai....I'm thinking Einar, with range of course because of the bow. As for powers....Quick Release implies some sort of multi-attack I think. Maybe counterstrike and sword of reckoning to go with that.

To me, quick release sounds like he can fire off a shot at units that are trying to close to melee range with him, or moving within his range, or something like that - i.e. something that happens when it's not his turn. Maybe he has to have an order marker on him for it to work.

Time to post opinions!
Zombies of Moridan - Eh. It seems... so plain.
Shades of Bleakwoode - Nice. Shades of Bleakwoode... it seems so epic. And prooves that they're from Valhalla!
Ke-Mo-Shi - Duh.
Eldgrim - Seems Vikingish (I made a new word!). Like the Zombies, however, it's a bit plain. Wonder if there will be more.
Tagawa Samurai Archers - Really, really boring. It's just "Tagawa Samurai" with "Archer" at the end.
Heavy Gruts - Somewhat plain, but it gives off an impression of Orcish Elite. I like it.
The Einar Imperium - Kickass! Must... buy... now!!! That is just awesome! A regal, yet powerful aura is given off by it. Definitely my favorite.
Empress Kiova - Interesting. Thank god it's not Durnipia!
Runa - Uhh... yeah... I don't get it.
Kaemon Awa - Seems like fake Japanese. But hey, what do I know?
Here's my ratings...
1. The Einar Imperium
2. Shades of Bleakwoode
3. Heavy Gruts
4. Kee-Mo-Shi
5. Empress Kiova
6. Runa
7. Eldgrim
8. Zombies of Morindan
9. Kaemon Awa
10. Tagawa Samurai Archers
A good run, however.

And according to the link Heroes, under the google search http://members.optushome.com.au/bletch/seventh/pages/heroes/borstenn.html
But Henrik did not enjoy this lifestyle, he had no friends, always referred to as 'the bastard' wherever he went. He resented having to play the part of a model Vendel when his heart cried 'Vestennmannavnjar'. And to add to his troubles, his younger half-brother Eldgrim, son of Magnus and Jofrid, and heir to Magnus' title, did not like him at all. Eldgrim resented the regard Magnus had for his elder half-brother, and rumours that Magnus would one day legitimise Henrik only added fuel to the fire. Henrik knew that his position was precarious.
2 years ago, Eldgrim, then just 18, boasted a large fraternity of friends and followers, who openly scorned Henrik. Henrik jumped at the opportunity to accompany a trade delegation on behalf of his father. Eldgrim had wanted to join that voyage to Avalon, but Magnus forbade him, saying that he knew nothing about the wool trade. The look in Eldgrim's eye as Henrik joined the ship convinced him that he should not return. When the ship docked in Northern Montaigne on its way to Avalon, Henrik took the opportunity to jump ship, and left for a life of adventure.
Eldgrim is a viking as well.
Edit: Also look at the pic of the Viking Borstennskoldmund.
He could pass as a dwarf also. But he is not.

What about the Quik attack being like Syvarris's Double Attack, only a Triple Attack? That was my first thought, anyway.
A Rapid-Fire type attack certainly sounds nice. What about an ability that allows him to fire at every enemy figure in his range (5 perhaps?) once per activation, no matter if he hits, kills, or whatever, unless he's still engaged? Kind of a blend of Rapid-Fire, Queglix, Blood Hungry, and Ice Shard.
Something like this:
Quick-Release Special Attack:
Range 5, Attack 2 (3?)
Kaemon Awa may attack every enemy figure in his range once during his turn. He may not attack the same figure more than once.
Counter-strike:
The usual
Elite Samurai:

Not as much. I think that these guys should have not reused the Tagawa name. Grut seems to be sort of a species term...like a variant of Orc. So I'm not as bothered by that. I think Tagawa Samurai Archers is lazy though. The only way I can see it being justifies is if these guys have a real synergy with the Tagawas in some direct way, like move bonding or such. But even then....kinda weak.
I like the idea of different Samurai units from the same province/clan. I think it adds to the theme a little more.

Actually, Grut is the planet that they are from.
Tagawa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tagawa) is a city in Japan, or the location that they come from.
Not too different in my opinion :P
I know Grut is the planet, but it also seems to be a term for the Orcs themselves. Kind of like Martians from Mars or Earthlings from Earth. Gruts from Grut. It doesn't bug me all that much.
The Tagawa thing I think is kinda weak still....why not name them after a new region of Japan? I beginning to wonder if they have some particular bond to the Tagawa Samurai we know and love. I've heard essentially nothing about these guys, so I don't know anything about their powers like I do some of the others, making it hard to guess what's in store.

The Tagawa Samurai really dont need movement bonding, which feels like a probable ability of the Tagawa Archers. If its movement bonding for all Samurai, thatd be grand - id love the Izumi to get some love.

Yeah, you and me, and about 50 others. :D I still see them as a common squad since the are packaged with the Kyrie.
If they make the Archers Unique then the Kyrie squad will be too and that isn't fair to Einar's army at all. You have the Sentinels, Minions and Imperium, it seems like a really dopey move if the HS team has made the Kyrie unique seeing the other two squads being common.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think they are just named Tagawa to help link two sets together. Yeah it's great to have so many Samurai groups in one game but honestly on Earth, how many times would these guys be working together.
If they start making more of the Samuria groups link together I could see more theme-in-theme armies.
ie:
"What are you going to run"
"I'm thinking of playing an all Tagawa Army"
"Yeah Iwas going to do that but I decided to run a Kozuke themed army, I just like the speed. Plus their Ashigaru are wicked in close combat"

I would not mind if the Imperium were unique. It would make them the elete of Einar's army. Plus, it fits with the theme of the three lesser generals having less suport in Valhalla. They would have less kyrie to call upon.

Tagawa would be the clan/family name of the daimyo (warlord) under whom they serve. There is no need to share any bonding or thematic powers whatsoever for the Tagawa Archers to deserve the same clan name as the Tagawa Samurai. (Furthermore, archers are samurai themselves.) It makes more sense to me than for Hasbro to come up with another Japanese clan name to herald under Einar.

Yah, but then it's not the obvious. As I read Neurosion they would have the exact same stats except for rang which would be 6. That would be a 175-200 pt. unit. Lower the attack and defense and, yes, that does make it more reasonable, but less obvious.

Just when I think I'm finally done purchasing any more HS stuff, out comes another wave with really nice figures. I had planned to stop after getting some castles as I wasn't that impressed with wave 5. But then I saw the stats and realized that there were some nice units there. So I ended up getting 3x for the commons as well as the uniques. When the flagbearers were announced at $13 a pop I thought, "What a rip off!" Now I have all five flag bearers. Surely that would be the end, right?
Now here comes wave six - samuri archers, zombies, ghosts, spider chick...I'm not even going to try to fight it. I just hope I have some time to play this game again. I haven't played in over three months!

How about Jane Goodall, the famous naturalist. I'm trying to remember, what was it she studied again?
Or, there's that MTV show, the one where they take somebody's trashy old car and deck it out. Does anyone watch that?
What about old-time video games. Anybody remember the Activision console? I'm trying to remember who the spokesman was in all the commercials they ran for that thing.

I don't mean to imply that jacques posted poorly, I just think that a discussion of Nicktoons could further implode this thread. Impertinent information will only serve to further implications that we have gotten off track.

Ill bet that Hasbro knows that even suggesting that Eldgrim may possibly be a dwarf then later confirming his Viking-ness would make everyone dissappointed.
African Swallow, I hear they are much bigger?
Yes, but African Swallows are non-migratory.
But suppose two swallows could carry him together?
Yes I imagine they could, but you would have to tye a string to each bird, wouldn't you?
No, I think they can only carry coconuts. Or was it horses? I don't know? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
(Pathdoc goes flying off of a rope bridge over a gorge.)
It was coconuts in the movie...But a Dwarf may weigh as much as a couple of large coconuts...
Therefore, I must go with African Swallow...and Im sticking with my original vote from the poll...He is a viking. In the pic, he looks to be 4 hexes high...still shorter than Finn and Thorgrim, but still a viking.
but if you took a 1 of each with the dwarf and 1 of each with the coconuts and tested the velocity of each, you'd find that the dwarf/viking is too much of a waste of time to arg bargy about, because we can't really answer it until the set comes out.

[quote:0d28af42b8="kenjib"][quote:0d28af42b8="Venandier"]Ill bet that Hasbro knows that even suggesting that Eldgrim may possibly be a dwarf then later confirming his Viking-ness would make everyone dissappointed.
African Swallow, I hear they are much bigger?
Yes, but African Swallows are non-migratory.
But suppose two swallows could carry him together?
