View Full Version : NorthEast Ohio (Cleveland) SLUGFEST Tournament - May 26

March 28th, 2012, 06:54 PM
Time for another Cleveland / Northeast Ohio Tournament, and I am making it a

SLUGFEST!!!

I.E. melee and hero friendly high point tourney

Date & Location: Saturday, May 26, Noon - 4 pm at my folks house (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=41.4702%C2%B0+N,+81.2488%C2%B0+W&z=12) (see link for address) in Newbury, OH (nearby Diversions Game Store (http://maps.google.com/maps?view=map&cid=4358379481657286198&q=Diversions&z=15)). My house can hold about 20+ if people don't mind sitting in different rooms, and it will be stress on setting up maps if I could do it at home. I will provide snacks and drinks, but feel free to bring your own food/drinks, but this will be a family/kid friendly environment.

Format: 4 round swiss style tournament. Players bring a pre-drafted 565 point 24-hex Heroscape army, C3V, SoV, & Marvel allowed. Bring the army you are going to play and a set of dice and order markers. If you don't have figures for the army you want to play, just ask on this thread and I or someone else can provide it.
NEW SLUGFEST RULE: All figures except Raelin (v1 & 2) and Deathreavers get this additional power: "Evasive 1: When a figure rolls defense dice against an attacking figure who is not adjacent, add 1 defense die to the defending figure." This defensive bonus works against normal and special attacks and is on top of other powers and in-game bonuses such as height or jungle. You can still bring Raelin and Deathreavers in an army, they just don't get the defensive bonus (it would be broken if they did). This will encourage more melee armies, but ranged units are still viable, just knocked down a grade or so. Marvel is being allowed, as they are not overpowered and also more FUN in this format. I changed to make Competitive Unit Congress cards NOT allowed this tournament.

Entry fee/Prizes: No fees or prized required, but "Bring a prize and you'll take home a prize." Also, I will have stuff for trade/sale (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?p=1080099#post1080099), some of it will be on the prize table.

Glyphs & Trap:
Glyphs, Traps, etc
All maps will have 1-2 power glyphs and 1-2 treasure glyphs, total of 2-3 glyph per map.
Power Glyph Pool Same as last year's gencon pool, unless someone objects.
Glyph of Dagmar (Initiative +8 ) - When you roll for initiative, add 8 to your die roll.
Glyph of Valda (Move +2) - For each figure you control, add 2 to their Move number.
Glyph of Lodin (+1 to D20) - When you roll the D20, you may add 1 to your die roll.
Glyph of Kelda (Healer) - Only figures with one or more Wound Markers may stop on this Glyph. When one of your figures stops here, remove all Wound Markers from its Army Card. Temporary/Single Use.
Glyph of Wannok (Wound) - At the end of every round, roll the 20-sided die. If you roll a 1, the figure on the Glyph receives one wound. If you roll a 2 or higher, you may choose an opponent who must give one wound to any figure he or she controls on the battlefield.
Treasure Glyphs
All released treasure glyphs (besides Brandar) will be in the pool, with master set glyphs (Attack +1, Defense +1, Healing) having double the chance of being on a map.

Treasure Glyph Trap: On a roll of 1-5, do not reveal the Treasure Glyph. Instead, roll a battle die. If a skull is rolled the figure receives a wound and rolls again. If a skull is rolled a second time in a row the figure receives a second wound but does not roll again. On a roll of 6 or higher, reveal the Treasure Glyph and place it on that Hero’s Army Card.

Maps

I have 6 RotV, 2 SotM, 2 BftU, 2 Marvel, 3 RttFF, 2 Jungle, 1 Lava, 1 Tundra, 2.5 FotA, and a bunch of lexan mats. I can make about 9 maps, but I wouldn't mind more Tundra and Lava maps if people can provide them. But with less than 10 people who RSVPd, 6 maps should be good.

I can bring:
Party In The Park (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/downloads.php?do=file&id=3142) - 2 Road Lexan, 1 Rotv, 1 RttFF

Any hints as to what Slugfest means? I don't pay attention to these formats. :p

You can put me down as a possible, I'll have to check with my ride (or someone else who happens to live in Cleveland would work just as well ;)). Geoboy might come, depending on what his father says.

Personally, I'm fine with CUC (I might be one of the few of course).

Either location would work for me. If we get enough players, I can try to bring a board. (Not sure what I'll bring though...or more importantly how to move it...)

I'd like to come - haven't scaped in a while. Memorial Day weekend is probably tough for me, though, so I'd rather go into June. Not sure if I can make any of them, but it's a better shot then.

Crap, didn't even realize that was memorial day weekend. I looked at my calendar of events and it worked out because it was after spring semester before summer semester started, and DUH that is because memorial day splits them. I could push it back into june, but hopefully others will chime in.

And SLUGFEST is a usually high point tourney that has some extra rule to help melee armies, and traditionally it gives extra attack when attacking an adjacent figure or straight up reduces everyone's range to 1, but I figure I would try the opposite and give extra defense against range. Hopefully it will have the same effect of a lot more melee armies and high point heroes, but it does help to have some range in an army to counter raelin and rats or just counterbalance knowing most people will be bringing melee. At least with this version we won't see Taelord + RATS*4 that won Gencon's slugfest.

What would the availability of extra troops be? I generally only have 1 of every common at this point in time. Would I be able to get more to round out a decent army?

I'm sure various people wouldn't mind loaning out units. If its heavies you need, I've got an extra 2x. In fact, I've got 2x (at least) for all of Wave 6. That being said, the date is too far away to begin planning armies. We don't even know the exact date. ;)

Never too early to think about armies. For instance, I've wanted to play Elf Wizards in a tourney my whole life, and this is a chance to do it, since the points are over 550. The only problem is the format is TERRIBLE for them. In fact, if GenCon's Main Event happens to be 550+, I'd work extra hard to go just to play Elf Wizards in it.

Might plan Einar Imperium too though - CUC or not.

lefton4ya
March 29th, 2012, 12:01 PM
IF CUC was allowed, this army would be Sweet:
Einar Imperium (110) * 3 = 330
Marcus (100) = 430
Atlaga (90) = 520
Theracus (40) = 560
3 squads of 7 Move EI plus a MarcusBomb to boost EIs double attack = carnage! Without CUC, just take out Atlaga.

I think I am nixing CUC for a couple reasons. One is that they were designed and playtested in current tournament metagame against range and melee, so might be overpowered here (as in the example above). And if CUC did good this tournament, then people will backlash against CUC and that is the opposite of what I would like to accomplish, so for now I am banning them in this tournament.

However, I think Marvel will be good in this tournament, as most of the melee armies will have higher attack/defense than the normal ranged fare, so Marvel heroes will be actually less overpowering in this format. Plus, its SLUGFEST, so c'mon!

Bottom line: CUC out, Marvel in!

If it is moved to the second week in June, I could possibly make it. Origins is either Memorial day weekend or the weekend after. I would like to be able to make it to both, assuming Ignatius summer school doesn't kick me in the butt. I'll check my calander and see if I'm open. If it is moved to June, it will be on a weekend, correct?

Lefton4ya, you might finally get your wish of meeting and playing me:D.

OK, after checking my calender, the 26th actually works out best for me. It would have to be that Saturday because that Sunday I have an ox roast a my beach club.

lefton4ya
March 30th, 2012, 07:34 PM
Well it look like memorial weekend it best then. Origins is May 30-June 3, 2012, and the only Saturday I can do in June is June 9, but I know a lot of high-school graduations are around then. People can let me know if you can make June 9 and not May 26, but I will only change it if enough people voice their opinion.

Start letting me know some maps suggestions (especially if you can bring one) and I will pick out some maps in a week or so (I can make about 6-8 with my terrain alone).

A few Army ideas...

Orks and Orcs
Grimnak
Brunak
Ornak
Nerak
Marcu
Blades x4

I really wanna play this one, anyone have 2 extra teams of blades?

Orcs are Green!!
Hulk
Grimnak
Heavies x1

Flameslayer's 6th Sense
Kiova
EI x2
TSA x3

I'm almost tempted to play this one. The CUC TSA's have Evasive anyways, so I'm sorta playing them without having to play them. :p
Of course, I still need another unit of Tagawa Samurai Archers...

Siege
Eldgrim
Warforged x5

Cyprien
Sonya
Zettians
Zombiesx6

I'm sure I'll come up with more. :p

Remember, no more CUC allowed. Once you pick out the final armies, let me know and I can bring whatever you need (unless multiple people want the same).

Some armies I would consider:
Medium Orcs:
Death Chasers * 5
[Ogre Warhulk ] OR Ogre Pulverizer * 2
[MeBurqSa ]
Nerak
Swog Rider * 1
Isamu

Heavy Orcs:
Heavy Gruts * 4
Grimnak
Nerak
Ornak OR Tornak
Isamu

Most annoying army ever:
Thanos
Deathreavers * 4
Isamu
Otinashi
Marcu

Choose your Lizard King:
Greenscales * 3
Braxas
Zogross Hardscale (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=37537)
Tarn Viking Warriors
>> This is actually my favorite as you can switch who your lizard king is each game based on who you are playing. If you are playing someone with range, disengage/flying, or 5 attack w/ bonding, then Zogross is better, otherwise Braxas is better. Plus it would be fun to play a C3V card (Zogross) in a tourney, and with him and this format it gives an excuse to play the Tarn Viking Warriors.

Remember, no more CUC allowed.

The rules say all units get Evasive 1. The CUC's version of them already has that. Assuming I bring them, I'd be playing CUC...sorta. :p

Gotcha flameslayer. Some more armies:

Crazy steamroller:
Capuan Gladiators * 5
Spartacus (Hope you don't play someone with stealth flying)

Tormented Knights:
Phantom Knights * 5
Sir Dupuis
Kee-mo-Shi? (this format makes her playable)

EnThralled:
Nicholas Esenwein
Preyblood Thrall * 8
Zelrig

Wolves:
Wolves of Bardu * 4 (or 3 & Khosumet)
Werewolf Lord
Van Nessing

Heal Me:
Fen Hydra * 3
Kelda
Rhogar Dragonspine
Isamu

Howzabout #3 for the slugfest (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?p=1585456&posted=1#post1585456) in Ohio

Scarcarver 110
Captian America 220
Woa x 3 150
Raelin v1 80

560 points
I think Warriors of Ashra are going to do well in this tournament and Captain America & Raelin will help. Scarcarver is a good filler.

I'm sure I missed this, but what time is the slugfest?

I know the date and location, but not the time.

And for some of the maps, I would suggest Highways and Dieways here (http://heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=5725), and Guardian here (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=14686).

Hope this helps! See you at the slugfest.
I am guessing it will be from 11 am - 4pm unless, someone wants it after lunch or earlier. The big issue is if I have it at the store on Rocky River, I need to get there at least 2 1/2 hours earlier to start setting up maps, whereas at my folks house I can set up the night before.

Basically imagine any army and someone can bring it.

We have had Highways and Dieways at a Ohio tourneys before. I think a fortress map with uncapped walls would be good as well. I think the more maps with road on it, it will be even more melee friendly and help speed up games as well. i am planning on bringing a couple of maps with lexan mats as well, including Party In The Park (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/downloads.php?do=file&id=3142) and one in am mid-design that has a shadow mat as the base layer. I will be picking some more BoV and other high profile maps but am taking more suggestions.

lefton4ya
April 2nd, 2012, 03:44 PM
Don't worry - I will be adding some range friendly (or at least neutral) maps with perches for your elves to snipe ;)

My only fear is that many people (including possibly me) will bring Braxas, Black Wrymlings, or other auto-wounders that bypass the Evasive 1 rule. I thought of adding to the slugfest rule "You may add or subtract 1 from an opponent's 20-sided die roll if it prevents one of your figures from getting a wound or being destroyed." but that might be too convoluted a rule to add.

killercactus
April 2nd, 2012, 06:50 PM
I think all melee units should get Evasive 1 and all ranged units should get Melee Defense 1.

lefton4ya
April 3rd, 2012, 04:17 PM
Interesting mechanic kc. I am having a hard time comprehending what this would do to games. As long as you didn't do the powers for Rats or double the 10th's power, it would be very interesting to see how this would effect the unit rankings and what armies are viable.

As it stands with this being a SLUGFEST, I am keeping the Evasive 1 power only, but I might have to try that format out sometime.

Would my Warrior army work better than this?

DCoT x3 165
Nerak 50
Captain America 220
Fen Hydra 120
Isamu 10

I really don't want to be the n00b who brings Warriors of Ashra to a melee- friendly tournament, although, if the Warrior army is better, then I will take it...

flameslayer93
April 5th, 2012, 05:45 AM
Guardian looks like it's only 1x Rotv and 1x FotA. We should be able to bring it.

Here's another army idea:
Swordsmen of the Coast
Kaemon Awa
Raelin 2.0
Isamu
Tagawas
TSAx3

At range, everything (Raelin Eexcluded) will have +2D. Even when the swords clash, the Samurai are still under the influence of +1D as your opponents are going to be scared of the CounterStrike.

I did try to have variety of terrain, but 2 are ones I made using lexan maps and 3 out of 4 others are by Dignan, so it is kinda biased - but let me know if you think I should change the map selection.

Anyone planning on bringing a prize to the tourney? If so, what do you guys usually bring as prizes that aren't Heroscape?

lefton4ya
May 21st, 2012, 06:55 PM
Things a heroscape player would want. If buying new, something between $10-$15 is usually a goal (carrying the legacy pricing of a Heroscape booster). I am going to put a rarer set of Ninjas & Samurai plus a LOTR: Tradeable Miniature Game Starter Set (www.ebay.com/itm/140754455849) I couldn't sell.

The best non-heroscape items are either customs good for Heroscape (C3V\C3G is really nice but anything can be fine) or other games that are fun and a heroscaper might like. As long a one person coming will pick the prize, you can feel like you brought a good prize.

I still need to pick an army, and may pick one of the ones I suggested on the first page, but really want to do at least one C3V\SoV unit just to try it. Another options is 4 or 5 Quasatch Hunters, as they are awesome in a high point mostly melee tournament with a lot of forest and jungle maps, but I only have 3 squads now, so I would have to borrow some.

One of my friends is coming too, so I think the total is 10. I will have 6 maps ready (5 are made already) and a couple of extra armies for any wayward souls (plus I can pick mine at the last minute).

I will fire up the grill and have about a dozen each burgers and dogs, and some frozen egg rolls I will heat up, but feel free to bring any snacks/drinks or if you are adventurousness, some meat I can grill.

See you all there!

If anyone gets this in time and has one squad of Greenscales or zombies, please bring it. I sleep now!

Sorry guys, last minute plan change for me. I was given tickets for Cedar Point today and I can't pass up the opportunity to take the kids.

I will not be attending today. Have a great time and a nice holiday weekend.

Well that was a great tournament! I had a ton of fun and played really well too, winning with 4-0. Got these cool new figures to makes customs out of too!

Thanks a ton LeftOn4Ya!

Congrads to Fedex Worker and thanks everyone for coming. 8 people is a small tourney, but it was a good amount and pretty fun. I am doing this on my smartphone and will post all the armies and matchups (including my battle report) tomorrow, but here are the results:
Fedex Worker 4-0 2260 points
Fedex's friend David 3-1 1980 points
Flameslayer93 2-2 1910 points
Scaper Nerd 2-2 1500 points
LeftOn4ya 2-2 1270 points
Geoboy 2-2 1205 points
Phaethon 1-3 1285 points
LeftOn's friend Lee 0-4 1230 points

I can also figure out SOS rankings too, which might switch some of the 2-2 places up.

All in all a good day.

Thanks for hosting, it was a great time!

By the way, you didn't add the two times I killed Thanos in one game and got zip to show for it!
