After the success of the last tournament and everyones desire to have another within less than a year, I took it upon myself to have a 520 point tournament. GrimFoe Games agreed to host us. Some may recall that Brian (Kinseth) hosted a tournament there a year or so ago and Alex/Tim hosted one there as well in January.

If you think you can make it or might be able to make it please post here on the site so we can begin creating our list of potential players.

If you have any questions feel free to post them here

My wifes Birthday is April 17th, though I am on vacation that week, SO I think I can swing it.

Can I suggest doing something a little different, perhaps 500 point armies? 520 Point armies... Just something to change it up a little.

Dankarabinhatesyou
January 31st, 2012, 10:19 AM
Absolutely Brian. Guys, lets do a 510 point army for this one.

Dankarabinhatesyou
January 31st, 2012, 10:24 AM
Would love some suggestions for maps. Would like to get 9 or so so we can do a good dispersal of playing and maps. I believe there were 8-10 for the last two tourneys so that would be good. Even still, with that many, we should be able to do this so that you don't have to play the same map more than once

Kinseth
January 31st, 2012, 10:28 AM
Are you planning on using glyphs on maps?

Dankarabinhatesyou
January 31st, 2012, 10:31 AM
I remember they were almost universally hated at the first tournament by most, but I'll leave that one open to those playing. We'll poll some people. Tim? Kinseth? ZK? Any interest in glyphs or just normal maps? I believe Coyote refused to play if there were glyphs so that may be a reason to not. I'm not a huge fan myself but if the demand is there lets do it.

Kinseth
January 31st, 2012, 10:49 AM
I liked what they did with the online tournament. Had a pool of 5-6 glyphs that can be used for each board. Randomly decide at the beginning of games what glyphs are placed. Have like say, 75% chance they have glyphs and 25% chance they don't have glyphs on the map.

Something like that.

I don't like glyphs at every tournament, but I do like them from time to time. Up to you Dan, Id suggest going with what you like for tournaments, if you don't like glyphs leave em at home :)

Dankarabinhatesyou
January 31st, 2012, 10:51 AM
Ok, then that is what we'll do. This is a tourney for the people. I just wanna play the game and have fun, enjoy, and of course, rig the door prizes so I win them all. I kid I kid. Glyphs it is!

zombieknight
January 31st, 2012, 11:05 AM
Hey there - first - obviously - count me in. I will be able to get my nephew Chris to come if he isn't on maneuvers. As for glyphs, definitely have 'em - I have yet to play a tournament with them, and would love to see how they change the dynamic. I have some other peeps that may be able to attend, but will have to check with them first.

I like the 510 points, challenging to sneak in all my soulborgs. ;) I'd like to see some maps with slippery ice and on them, just because, well, I rarely see them, or am unlucky enough never to play them. Might be fun. But since my record is abyssmal at tournaments, I think I should try to encourage large, open maps that work with my /cough/ ranged army /cough/. :)

Dankarabinhatesyou
January 31st, 2012, 11:07 AM
Haha, well we'll see how that goes Jer but fantastic. I'll put Chris down and if not, well then, thats how it goes. Steady at 6 now. Just gotta double that and we'll have as many as before and that was great!

Ok guys, after doing a little picking and some consulting, I think that this is a good 8 maps to pick. I'm being given suggestions so this list will surely change as we continue on before I post the final maps. As always, I appreciate anyone who can help bring maps. I'm sure with everyones help we can put these together. Any input I'd be more than happy to listen.

Hi Dan -

We are a strong "maybe", April is a busy month for us, but if we can swing it we (Joseph, Patrick and I) will come, I do not know if my son Andrew will come or not.

My son Joseph has created 3-4 really good maps which he would like to see in a tournament, he is currently entering them into the map software Brian forwarded to me, once they are done I'll try to figure out how to post them on the site for review.

I have played at LongIsland Scape twice, they like glyphs, I didn't really care for them myself, but that won't deter me from playing.

Be Well-
Tim

Definitely open to suggestion on maps. Kinseth is looking at some, so I'm definitely willing. And hey, if it gets you guys there we'll use as many maps as you create. Hopefully Alex will come with you guys as well. I know the whole crew I rolled in with is in so far so hopefully you guys as well. Even if we have the same exact people as the January tourney its much better than no tourney at all. And if more people wanna come, we'd love to have you. Thanks in advance guys.

I like the map selection, Dan - nice choices. I'll contact some other peeps to see if they're interested - might get the Hesters to attend this one. I'll probably have Zman there, but I am not sure how much he'll be able to compete, having just turned 6 and not having really played the game a lot. :)

I am so glad you chose ember canyon road I was a little ticked it wasn't in the other tornement. if I go I will love to bring maps and glyphs I will build ruins of pine tree marsh if I go and supply the glyphs consider forbiden waters because I can build that as well. glad you decided to do another one can't wait to see your old faces and hopefully some new ones. I definatly want to go thats great timing theres no cow shows that month.

Just invited the Hesters, too - so there's a chance (50/50) that Alex H will come.

I have a lava set so can combine that with Brian's to make the Ember Road. I will check on the other sets and see what I can contribute - can definitely make a couple.

Dankarabinhatesyou
February 13th, 2012, 11:21 AM
We have 5 maps confirmed as long as Alex and NEO make it. I spoke to Kinseth and he stated he could do 3-4 maps and that he'll do what needs to be done. If Tim comes, I think they can do 2-3 maps as well (as they did last time) so with 9 selected we only need 4 more. We may pick one or two more depending because i've heard from people in NYC and Syracuse about interest in this tournament, so we may need to do 11 maps depending. If there isn't 20 people I'm gonna try to keep it to 9-10 maps only for setup time purposes, but we'll see how it goes. I'm sure not opposed to having more!

Hey guys,

I live downstate a bit, but not impossible for me to get up there. I'm going to try to iron out a few things and see if I can make it up there.
By the way, I only got into Scape recently and have never played anyone besides family, let alone a tournament. So I am clueless as to what it entails and what I should bring (outside of the 510 pt army). Well I might as well ask, would I be welcome up there, seeing how I know very little about everything? At the very least I could be a confidence booster for whoever plays me :D. Let me know. Thanks.

Bring a prize for the prize table (one booster is the typical prize) and the five dollar entry fee. Also, bring all order markers, wound markers and dice. Also, you don't need to bring one but it would be appreciated if you were to bring one of the maps that the host posted previously in this thread. Also by tournament, he doesn't mean anything hard core at all, it means friendly play with prizes given out in order of the structure (usually win-loss rate determines standings with fractional scoring as the tie-breaker). It is almost never elimination because it's supposed to be fun for everyone.

FuriousMufasa
March 15th, 2012, 04:51 PM
Alright sounds good. And by booster you mean....one set from a wave right? The only unopened ones I have are D&D is that alright? Well thanks for the help. I'll try and make the journy up there. And just to confirm is the time 11:00 at night?! Thanks.

Dankarabinhatesyou
March 16th, 2012, 07:30 PM
Hey guys. It is not elimination. Its a 520 point army. And yes, one unopened set from a wave (or 10 dollar gift card). Ok guys, its less than a month away from the tourney so can I get some confirmations on who will actually be there and bringing what maps? That would be outstanding. Thanks

Dankarabinhatesyou
March 19th, 2012, 01:22 PM
Hey guys. Definitely swiss. Planning to do 4 rounds I think and then a finals maybe, but we'll see how that goes. Round 4 may determine the champs. Using the app kinseth provided to do the tourney. I'm hopeful. I don't have anything planned for that day and it's unlikely anything specific will pop-up. However, it's also going to be a pretty intense work week that will spill out more than usual into the weekend. It'll be a decision I make that week, possibly as late as Thursday or even Friday.

Sorry not to be more definite, but I don't want to promise to show (with maps, especially) and then bail out at the last minute.

I spoke to one of the Grimfoe guys and if needbe, he will fill in the spot in the tournament if we are uneven. Tim's daughter may also be coming as well, so we should be ok for players to be even matchups.

Kinseth,

This is Ember Canyon Road v2. I just looked at the schematics. It should be the way it's listed up there.

Alex,

Thats ok. I'll see if anyone else can bring that. Do you or the Sweeneys have the guide for Forbidden Water?

Neo,

Outstanding. Any chance he can bring a map or?

Gah, I'm out for sure. :(

It wasn't looking great anyway, but now there is something else happening in VT that requires me to be physically present. (I'll be moderating a session of undergraduate presentations on their research in math and quantitative social sciences by students from all over Vermont; open to all if you think attending this is a more tempting option than the tournament!)

Have fun everyone.

Just a heads up on the glyphs guys. The way it will be structured is there will be five glyphs per map. Two will be randomly chosen and then placed on the board, one face up, and one face down, before the match. It will be different for every round what glyphs are on which map. Hopefully everyone is ok with this. This was suggested to me and I think it sounds like a very exciting way to do things

I think some boards have 3 glyphs. Do you plan on placing 3 glyphs for those boards?

Can you just put both glyphs face up, because otherwise, it isn't fair.

If there are his and her glyphs on a map, then one player is left hanging and the other knows what they are guessing, also players will step on a glyph with no way of knowing what benefits it provides increasing the luck factor.

I haven't looked at the maps to know if there are any His and Her Maps(Meaning maps where a glyph is closer to Player A than Player B.) Most BoV maps are symmetrical, so this won't be an issue, as it looks like most maps for the tournament are just that.

I'd suggest either going all face up or all face down for a given map. A mix would be nice.

Hey all,

I am bringing a map and I'm just curious. Should I bring a set of Glyphs as well? If so how many, should I bring all I have and then we randomly pick them there. Or will we pick from Glyphs that are aleady at the place. Thanks.

What does this mean? I can't comprehend this post but I think you mean the following:
Dan, I'm not telling you how to run your tournament. I think that you should allow people whom do not want to bring maps not bring maps and have people how are bringing multiple maps bring only one or two maps.

If that is what you mean, why? No one would bring a map if the didn't want to, and it's pointless to limit how many maps one can bring. Sorry, but your post just makes no sense as far as I can comprehend through all of the errors.

Forbidden Waters - Haven't seen what this map is, can't find an image for it.

While I think forbidden waters is a good map,it was too large of a map for my liking in a tournament game. Took several turns for armies to just meet on the battlefield.

Dankarabinhatesyou
April 11th, 2012, 10:44 PM
Ok right now Im leaning towards leaving off Forbidden and Fulcrum, which would put as at 9 maps, which should be plenty for 14 people. Two maps left over a round (barring sudden surprise entrances in the tourney hopefully) should be fine. I'll make the official announcement tomorrow but as it holds up, Alex, you may not have to bring forbidden, and Kinseth, you may not have to bring one of your three maps ;)

Alex Karasavidis
April 12th, 2012, 08:25 AM
Dan I say forbidden waters waters is important to use because it is a fun map if you have a lot of short boards it will only be good for short ranged units but if you use a few long boards it adds some variaty plus its also good for ranged units. I really want to build it.

Dankarabinhatesyou
April 12th, 2012, 12:41 PM
Taken into consideration Alex. Like I said, I'll make the formal what 9 maps we'll be using tonight. Or maybe we can make ten and just let the pairings go as they may :) Doesn't mean anyone will end up on any specific map

Hey Dan & Everyone -

...just wanted to say that while Dan is the boss and what he says goes, I personally think Alex brings up some great points and while I generally agree with Brian on things, in this case I do not. I think Forsaken Waters (not Forbidden) is a good map for a tournament.

...in addition my daughter Mary has decided she wants to come to play at Saturday's tournament, so add another to the list!

Be Well-
Tim

Neo, It is just one map. If Dan decides he wants to keep it, and I am paired up on that map again. I will gladly play it. I might even be bringing range :)

But I don't think that is the right attitude to take into an event, sometimes in life we don't get what we want.

Turret rocks wasn't a symettrical map, my opponent agreed to switch. We cleared it with the tournament director because of that reason. Not because I didn't like that map or because it didn't suit my army. I think you are taking the wrong attitude on this.

EDIT:
I would also like to apoligize for any harsh or rude comments I made about any players, rules or maps. It's just that I like everything in my life to be as 'fair' as possible, and sometimes I can get carried away and try to micromanage everything. I still do believe in my previously stated opinions it's just that I could have said them in a more respectful manner. I promise that at the actual tourney I will keep any lingering negative opinions to myself.

EDIT: After looking at Forbidden Waters, I will be happy to play on any map.

Hey Dan, and everyone…
This is Patrick Sweeney.
I just want to thank you Dan, for having it and I had a great time!
These are my battle reports…
First battle: Dan.L
Dan’s, army as I remember it is: Zelrig, Railin, Tenth Reg. x3, Marcu and Isamu.
The battle started swiftly, I killed Zelrig, but he evened it by killing Sujoah. I got both glyphs but lost them later. My elite soldiers started falling like girl scouts  it was a good game. I always enjoy playing Dan! It was Mohicans VS Red Coats. I was 0 for 1.
Second battle: Peter
Peter’s army was: Q10, Elite Venocs, Obsidian guards, Otonashi, Sir Hawthorn, 4th Mass.
This was a rather short battle mainly because his dice rolled BAD while mine rolled GREAT!!! I still had fun. But I had a stroke of good luck. I’m 1 for 1
Third battle: Brain, (a.k.a Kinseth)
His army was: Cutters x4, Eltahale, Raelin, Krav.
He defeated my army. He kept scurrying with the Cutters. With Eltahale, the Krav and Raelin I was over whelmed. But a good game none the less I had fun. I’m 1 for 2.
Fourth battle: I’m a Dragon
His army was: Braxas, Green scales, x2 Stingers, x3 Otonashi.
This battle went fast, early in the battle two stingers killed Sojoah!!! I wounded Braxas 6 wounds but he got the glyph of healing! I lost, but had a lot of fun!
Thanks again Dan. Good night.
Patrick S.
F.Y.I
My army was: Sojoah, spiders x3, Indians x2, Brave Arrow, Drow Chain Fighter.

Bloody Bogle

Had a great time, too, on Saturday. Tim - had a pleasure competing against your daughter - you have awesome kids and should be proud of them - very well mannered, articulate, and respectful - always a pleasure.

Dan - thanks for a great tourney - and I am proud to have defended my title of"coming in last amongst the over 20 crowd." It is a distinguished title and I cherish it. Next time I will play an all Gorillanator army to keep the dream alive. Can I get a trophy next time, please? :)

Fun playing everyone - great crowd - it was nice to hear some of the people at the store comment on how well we all got along and helped each other. Great to hear. Looking forward to the next one - and Grimfoe is a great location - easy to get to - good eats around there, and lots of space.

Glad everyone had an awesome time.

I played IMADRAGON and we had a back and forth battle till I was able to take out Braxas. At that point, the remainder of my militia and there Sgt in charge were able to handle to rest of his evil forces., green scales and marro stinger alike dropped like flies.

In round two I played my friend Dan, and we reenacted the revolutionary war, but the results were different. Three 10th reg beat three 4th mass. Though, I did build his army for him. In the end, Sgt. Drake was able to destroy Zelrig and then started taking out redcoats. 2 down

Third round I got my butt whipped. Joseph Sweeney decided to play a perfect army to counter mine, and it didn't help that Sgt. Drake died in one shot. When your best range is 6 and your opponents is 10, well, you lose fairly quickly, which I did. Q9, Q10, Raelin and Laglor. Ugh. No fair. At this point, I knew what the finals would be

Round 4 I played my arch nemesis (and oddly enough, the person I played in the last three tournaments in the 4th round), Tim Sweeney. Tim immediately took out Raelin and I was ready to throw it in. He took out some militiamen and I was ready to quit. Then, comeback city. Sgt drake and my air elementals were whooping butt and the dice finally came my way. Then great roll for Tim and bad roll for me and Sgt. Drake bit it and the game was done. I hate the Krav Maga agents but I took out like 9 drones, the agents, but 3 more drones and guilty mccreech prevailed.

All in all, a great time, and hosting is a lot of fun. I recomend everyone do it. Hope you guys all enjoyed. Look forward to the next one
