I think it looks great. It'll probably be the best one yet, but I hate that they're cramming SO much into one movie.
Sandman, Hobgoblin and Venom?
I had heard Sony Pictures was wanting to shut down the series, (why I have no idea), but it only looks like they're opening more doors.
I can't see the principles wanting to stay with it much longer, but I guess I'll wait and see.

That's great! I was just reading Essential Spider-Man vol. 1 to my son two nights ago.
Introduces the Sandman, Green Goblin, and all the other cool villains. Delineated by the great Steve Ditko.
I can read these tales to him and then watch the movie.
I love the quick shot around 2:23 of Spidey grinding Sandman's face against the inside of the subway tunnel wall!!!!

There's a scene in the trailer where Spidey gets his fist and arm stuck in the Sandman's mid-section. That was directly from the early, Ditko issues. I came across that the other night in Essential vol. 1!

I am pretty sure that the hobgoblin will play a limited role in this one. That will be spidey 4. This movie just shows how the hobgoblin came about. I can see the movie being divided into four segements.
First Segment:
This is really the introduction of the movie's world, and Peter's current problems. Spidey has his first encounters with Sandman. He probably does not do to well in those battles. Oscorp creates the symbiote, and Peter is introduced to it. It becomes absorbed into his suit.
Second Segment:
This part is all about the battle inside the spider. Peter is slowly consumed by the symbiote, and he begans to exceed where he never has before. He also begins his romance with Gwen Stacy. After a while, he realizes that he has become a different person and he tries to change it. (AKA belltower scene) This is also where Harry Osborne finds his father's suit.
Third segement:
Spidey is the normal (but wiser) spiderman again. The symbiote finds his new host and creates Venom. Harry Osborne may be supporting Venom in some behind-the-scenes way. Venom faces off against Spidey several times. He becomes the main enemy of Spiderman.
Fourth Segmant:
Venom and Spidey fight their ultimate battle. It is here that Harry Osborne's (now the Hobgoblin) plan reaches its peak. The hobgoblin is revealed, and he comes to desrtoy Peter. Gwen Stacy is drastically affected some way. The Sandman might come and help Peter fend off the Hobgoblin. The Hobgoblin gets away, plotting his next attack. Mary Jane and Peter make up. End of movie.
This is my prediction anyways. You guys are free to pick it a part.

I just caught this on TV today. I don't know how much I missed of the beginning, but I saw quite a bit of it. When I saw the thread title, my first thought was saying how cool the sandman meets the subway train part was. I think that has to be the most excited I've been for a movie from the trailer since the LOTR trailers hit (and that had a year and a half buildup).

I'm hoping they start it off as if a long amount of time has passed. We are missing some Baddies between this movie and the last one. It appears that they have changed the actor for Eddie Brocks Character, and if he acts anything like he did in that 70's show, I'll cry.
I was expecting this movie to have the Dr.Connors story in it, but it looks like they are going right past that storyline, :?
I do like the introduction of Sandman and the fact the his costume really echos the comic costume, :D
But altogether, the fact the Venom has something to do with this movie at all kinda' turns me off but in order to cram all of this together you guys are right on the 4+ hours, :)

Well, Sandman will be the main villain. Lets say it's an hour and a half long. He'll take up... a good hour of it. Then, Spidey will give up the suit and have a showdown with Harry, and directly afterwards Venom will appears, they'll have a tussle, and one of them will run off.
I'm just guessing, though.

Yeah! I thought for sure The Lizard was going to be in this new Spider-Man movie. But if Chimpy is correct - the series going beyond a trilogy - we could still see the Lizard in a future film.
I do like the introduction of Sandman and the fact the his costume really echos the comic costume, :D
HAHA - me too! Nothing beats those green stripes and brown pants! Sandy's a total bully thug and that outfit is perfect for him. It's a bit retro, but if they had made him modern-looking with a dark, brooding x-men type outfit, I'm not sure it would work for me.

It's not the fact that Venom is in a movie, it's just that it's a little early for him to be appearing.
There is a MASS of other enemies that they are passing up just to get to Venom.
In my opinion, Jackal, Carrion, Kraven, Morlun or Lizard should be showing their faces instead of Venom.
Venom is kindof a 4th movie thing, where Spidey would get the costume in 3 and it would give him the ability to defeat an enemy in the 3rd movie.
Towards the end of 3 you would see the change in Peter's attitude and have a final sequence that cuts off. That final scene would be fuel for the hype for the 4th movie where Spiderman would have the "Big Battle".
I feel Venom should be the last Villain in the series of movies, you know, the big FINAL BATTLE type movie.
If they go on from this point, the directors only real option is to keep flooding movies with enemies to the point that you end up with all of his enemies teaming up together.

Actually both movies far exceeded by expectations. The portrayed Peter and spiderman in the way that was true to the comics adn I really enjoyed both movies where I consider them some of the best made superhero movies of all time. That is my opinion. I am really looking forward to number 3. Though like X-3, there is alot of hype and expectations and we will see if they blow it like X-3 did.

November 10th, 2006, 12:48 PM
Oh, come on. X3 wasn't that bad. The only problems were that they killed Scott, Xavier, they didn't have the Phoenix flame effect (broke continuity with comic AND X2), they used the "antidote" on Magneto, and Xavier broke his own moral code in the post credits scene. It's not like those are big problems.
Tiberius
November 10th, 2006, 12:50 PM
And some of that I was okay with like killing cyclops which I beleive is what initially sent Jean over the edge anyhow, she though he got killed and went dark, right? But they didnt wrap up a ton of loose ends in that one and it was really missing something the others had. Maybe that was the difference the director made.
Agent Minivann
November 10th, 2006, 12:59 PM
I figure the director was responsible for dropping the flame effect. I guess it really shows the stupid kid in me, but that was one of the big things I was looking forward to seeing.
X3 I liked some stuff about it, and I didn't like some other stuff about it. I thought it was a good movie; I thought it was a bad adaptation.
[/threadjack]I get the sense reading this thread and watching the trailer that it looks like they are trying to do a lot in this one. I think there are a lot of things that we're seeing in this trailer that remind us of X3 (beyond just the hype and expectation) and throws up the red flags. But I do think Spidey3 should succeed where X3 failed.

I could see something like this, but I actually am hoping for a pseudo cliff-hanger (which I never hope for!) that leaves us with the Venom issue unresolved. That could then make up the bulk of the fourth movie. Sandman and Harry (I hope he doesn't call himself Hobgoblin) could be the main focus of this film, with Peter just discovering the black suit and realizing it's not enitrely wholesome by the end. Perhaps Eddie could get his hands on it late in the film, in much the same way Harry got his hands on the Goblin gear in Spider Man 2.
The one thing I'm VERY dissapointed in after seeing the preview is that they are changing the death of Uncle Ben. They are now saying that Flint Marko (aka Sandman) really did it. I think that takes away from the first movie's impact (ie Spiderman had a chance to stop the killer), and I hope it turns out to be untrue over the course of the movie.

She's portrayed as more of an outsider, toughie punk kinda girl in that series, which I think works with Bendis's portrayal of Mary Jane a lot better. Mary Jane is more of the brainiac good girl (but with a firey temper) and Gwen is more the rebel, bad girl daughter of the cop, with a real shell on the outside to mask her feelings.

I think he brought her character into the series as a way of fixing the old Gwen/MJ/Bridge crossover in movie 1. They may revisit that scene where Gwen dies but as a type of "Green Goblin: The Son succeeding where the Father failed" type of thing. A kind of way for Lil' Osborne to avenge his father and make Spidey suffer.

I think all of you are all getting too worked up. 4+ hours? yea right that would be a miracle. I hate to ruin it for everyone but I guess I'll be Mr. Negative. I however, wouldn't mind if it was 4 hours. Also just because the black symbiote suit is in the movie, doesn't mean Venom is going to be in it. I know that Eddie Brock is shown going "whats he up too" while looking up from the bell tower (teaser trailer). Still though I just don't see it happening, I see that becoming Spider-Man 4.
Most people tend too get there hopes up for big movies like this because the past ones were so good, but in the most part for a sequal too any movie the trend tends to start its downfall of the storyline. Some have surpassed this and you can name those movies, but its all based on opinions. Take mine for what its worth, but I'm just trying to look at it from a different perspective. All in all this movie is still going to be badass. The End.

The director has publicly said Venom is going to be in it. He said that most of the CGI effects are gooing to him, so I do not see him playing a minor role either. I am pretty sure Venom will be taken care of in this movie. Harry will be the one Spiderman will have his "ultimate" battle with. That way it will be more of an emotional struggle, not a physical one. I mean that is what these movies have always focused on. Peter vs. Harry, the battle of two life long friends; it deserves its own movie.

Topher Grace (That 70's Show) is playing Eddie Brock. I believe the third installment is setting up Eddie's character. It appears that the good part of the movie has Peter in the alien symbiote costume, which would mean that Venom won't exist until Peter goes back to the red and blue. Venom is too large a character to share screen time with Sandman and Hobgoblin (if that's what Harry is supposed to be), so I wouldn't be surprised if their just setting the Venom character up for the fourth movie. Venom will be in the third movie, since they'll already released some statue or bust images. Hopefully they'll end the Osborne story arc with this movie and move on to other things. The whole love triangle, jealous friend thing is getting a bit old.

It's a totally different thing. Not alternate reality, not flashback, not anything like that. Ultimate Marvel is a whole separate universe, if you want to think of it in those terms. It does not cross over into the existing Marvel titles at all, and has nothing to do with their continuity. It was created as a way of getting new readers into comics via titles that didn't make them feel like they'd missed out on decades of back issues or complicated multi-title cross overs and such.
They are made quite visually distinct by the "Ultimate" heading at the top of the book and the two colored bars that run down the sides of the cover.
The main books, at present, are Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate X-Men, Ultimate Fantastic Four, and The Ultimates (now in it's second maxi-series volume, making it Ultimates 2). There have been various mini-series such as Daredevil, and some mini-series cross-overs between the books, like X-Men and Ultimates mixing it up in "Ultimate War" or Spidey and the Ultimates battling the Green Goblin and his cohorts in "Ultimate Six." There was even a Galactus epic consisting of three mini series.
In Ultimate Spider-Man, Peter Parker is 15 to 16, living with his Aunt May, and attending High School with Mary Jane, Flash Thompson, etc. Gwen Stacy comes into the school during the Doctor Octopus storyline and is quite an interesting take on the character. Overall the book is pretty close to the feel of the original, just with less baggage and a few new twists and turns. Think of it as a more streamlined take on the character.
Ultimate X-Men and Ultimate Fantastic Four (especially their take on Thanos and his crew) are both a fun ride too, but The Ultimates is my favorite of the lot. It's kind of like the Avengers but much grittier. It really takes it's time too, but always pays off. It's a slow build series that rewards you with battles that are EPIC and diaglogue that's actually interesting! Imagine that! The book features Captain America, Iron Man, Nick Fury, The Wasp, Thor, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Giant Man, Scarlett Witch, Quicksilver, Hulk, and others and is told in two volumes, with a third on the way sometime next year. It's a real pull-no-punches sort of book, and that's not everyone's cup of tea, so flip through the first chapter or two of the trade before you buy. Some folks like their super-heroes squeeky clean, and hate it when they are portrayed as "real" people with issues. Characters also kill in this book....Captain America is a soldier, after all.
how can a 16-year old be in colledge? :?
Um, because he's in high school in the ultimate series.

I'm glad he won't be the "Hobgoblin." I always hated that whole character. I like that he's just Harry, armed with his father's Green Goblin weapons. No reason to give him a stupid nick name that implies he's as loopy as the old man. Far more interesting if it's just Harry, driven to kill.

Here is the Wiki article on Ultimate Marvel:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultimate_Marvel
I personally do not like the Ultimate continuty as much as the 616 continuty. I kind of get tired of every super power orgin being some failed super soldier project. There are some good ones though. Ultimate FF is one of these. On the other hand I dislike anything involving Cap. America. Cap is more about brawling and less about thinking in these books.
P.S. It is fair to say that most of the Marvel movies take just as much from the Ultimate continuty as they do the normal one.
EDIT: Now that I think about it there are a few more things I like about Ultimate Marvel. For example, the comic book death is nonexistant. Some of the costumes are cooler too. Like the X-men's.

God, that's a relief. Harry becomes Green Goblin, not Hobgoblin. Hobgoblin is some rich crook who steals the Goblin gear.
I agree that it's too much in one film. I do like that they're recreating the scene from Web #1, where Spidey goes into a belltower to rip off the black costume.
I sincerely hope the following:
1) Sandman did NOT kill Ben Parker.
2) Venom has no more than an end-of-film cameo.
3) The 'symbiote' that came out of Spidey's Secret Wars vacation has a different origin - the original story is stupid.
4) They don't completely screw up the whole thing.
I haven't been as impressed with the films so far as I had hoped. It started with the web coming from his arms, then went to Gwen Stacey replaced by a victim-wannabe Mary Jane, and included a dead Doc Ock. I've enjoyed them to a certain extent, but every time they totally screw with the storyline, I get more annoyed.
And I'm with everyone else who would have liked to see Dr. Connors, the one-armed scientist turned rampaging Lizard, star in this film. Only instead of going all Hollywood and killing him in a tragic finale, I want Peter Parker to actually save him, the way Spiderman would do.
But mostly I just wish they would put Sin-Eater in one of these movies. My favorite villain ever.

Here is an even better article. (Not just a news update)
http://movies.ign.com/articles/736/736956p1.html
It gives an indepth look at the two main villians in the story. It has several insightful quotes from the director, and hypothosizes how the villians come about. They say Venom's orgins will probably be like that in the Ultimate universe. I suggest you guys read this one.
P.S. Imax, the first article said that Harry was neither the Green Goblin or the Hobgoblin.

I like the ultimate continuity a LOT more than the classic. I think the super soldier arms race adds a nice cohesion to the universe, and seems somehow more plausible to me, not that plausibility really matters in comics. To date, Spider-Man, Goblin, Doc Ock, Sandman, Captain America, Hulk, and Giant Man have origins that are somewhat tied together...am I missing anyone there? Spider-Man was bitten by an OsCorp research spider....Oscorp research was working to make a bid for Nick Fury's super-soldier program and thus created the Green Goblin by mistake. Doc Ock was created out of the ensuing carnage. Sandman was a competitor's attempt at a super-soldier, and Captain America was the original 1940s model. Hulk was a failed attempt to replicate Super Soldier serum, and Giant Man was a side project of Hank Pym.
Venom and Carnage and The Lizard and The Scropion and so on are also somewhat tied, but not really to the Super-Soldier Project. Carnage is a direct offshoot of Venom, a project Peter's father worked on. It wasn't really meant to be a military application though. The Scorpion's origin hasn't been ottally revealed, but it's clearly a result of experimentation with Parkers' DNA and the Carnage/Venom projects. The Lizard was created separately from all this, but Doc Connors then helped create Carnage, so he got wrapped up in the whole mess.
I too, love the ulitmate looks of the characters, and the way that they actually (gasp) die!
I also like that Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, and others actually kill. Cap's a soldier, he should shoot someone here and there. I'm not bloodthirsty or anything, I just think a soldier is trained to kill and should, well, kill people if they need to. Ditto for Iron Man....in the Ultimate Universe he's charged with protecting the US and it's interests from threats beyond the regular military's ability.....ie he's the "Utimate" line of defense, get it?......towards that end he should be willing to laser-blast the heck out of someone if it's in service of the greater good. And Hulk? Don't even get me started....Hulk goes berserk, people should get squished. I'm sorry, but they just should. Imagine what would happen if a raging, child-minded, super-powered colossus decided to freak out in Times Square.....people would get real dead, real fast. I like that the Ultimate universe isn't afraid to admit that and deal with the consequences. I like that they aren't trying to stick to antiquated codes designed to protect the industry during the kneejerk reaction to "Seduction of the Innocent."

Here is an interesting article from IGN's comic-con team. http://movies.ign.com/articles/720/720537p1.html
Among other things, it states that Harry will NOT be the Hibgoblin.
P.S. I can not believe I missed this article. It is almost 4 months old!

I agree with all four of those numbered points, but I have been quite impressed with the Spidey-movies so far.

Really? That was the big news from Comic-Con (though it had been leaked before that), that Venom was going to be in the movie. Played by Topher Grace (aka, Eddie Brock), no less! Heh heh... which is kinda funny, but I think he can pull it off.

I wonder if he's in the movie, or really IN the movie, ya know? Like how much of a factor is he? It seems like Topher as Eddie is going to be all over the thing, but is Topher as Eddie as Venom going to be a major factor or just a end of movie quickie that leads into Spider-Man 4? I hope that Venom is sort of a quickie that gets resolved....I hate cliffhangers that go on for more than a year.

This pic only helps to fuel my new belief that Venom's appearance in this movie will be brief.
Anyone else think this looks like a good closing scene imag? You know into Venom's mouth and right on to the credits, :D

Like you said, but this is what I'm expecting. It is a cliffhanger series anyway.
i.e. Eddie, while peeking at Peter Parker removing the symbiote decides to get in for a closer look. After he takes 4-5 pictures he stands back to look at his camera revelling in the fact that this moment is his final break. This moment will turn him into a celebrity, and as he looks towards the bell tower with a proud smirk on his face, the symbiote rushes towards him. In a panic he throws down his camera and hits the ground trying to remove the creature, but it's too late. By this time Venom has seaped into his veins slowly changing his genetic structure.
Eddie digs his fingures into the stone walkway he was standing on moments ago. His body overcome with pain, he looks up towards the screen, but he is Eddie Brock no more. Now, they are Venom.
*Venom opens mouth, camera goes in, cut to black. Cue music and credits.
At least that's what I'm seeing.

I agree with CA on this.....it seems like there will already be enough happening in the movie (sandman, hob/greengoblin, and parker's inner struggle).
I would be surprised if venom was a bigger part of the story for the 3rd one, but I'm not counting on it as of yet.

Venom needs to work out. I think Tobey might be bigger than Topher.
Heh heh... too true. Especially after seeing how ripped Tobey was for the first film!
However, I don't think any actor could actually play Venom. They NEED to CG the villain... or else you'll end up with a much lamer rendition of a large scale comic book character than was Juggernaut in X3. Seriously, I was really disappointed with that translation. But I really don't see that happening. Raimi is too smart for that...
Though the more I hear about this film, the more I agree with CA's "cliff-hanger" theory and carrying over the true Spidey vs. Venom storyline to the 4th film. Which, honestly, would suck.
I mean, no offense to T.H. Church, but fans don't want to see Spidey vs. the Sandman. At this point in history, that clash in comicbook lore is irrelevant. The true battle fans are looking for, and have been SCREAMING for since even Cameron was signed on to helm the Spiderman project, is Venom vs. Spideman!
Looking back over the history of Spiderman, the villains from films 1 & 2 were great (though the Green Goblin costume translation was pretty bad). Both of these villains played significant roles in the life and legend of Spiderman. So why this somewhat peripheral character of Sandman getting good play? I mean, Spiderman first defeated Sandman in the comic books with a friggin' vacuum cleaner!! But now Raimi is trying to elevate the status of this character by making him the robber who killed Uncle Ben. Whatever...
If anything, why not introduce the Lizard?
:soapbox:
Okay, enough ranting...

He's also fighting Harry w/ the Goblin Gear, so they're probably going to end that battle. And I remember hearing that when brainstorming for villians, they counted out the Lizard because they didn't want to do another "normal man corrupted by an expirament". Which makes, sense, I guess. I, personally, want to save Venom for the 4th movie, so they can put Harry in the hotseat. Three villians in one movie would be overkill.

Actually it might not be too bad of a plot for 4 if they brought in the Lizard for it. Poor old Peter keeps trying to help out Dr. Connors but each time he gets close Venom pops in to toy around with old Spidey.
The entire movie could be the build up with Venom messing around with everything in Peter's life as well as Spidey's. The whole Lizard thing could just compound and add to that tension and make for a Half way descent movie, IMO.

^ Looks nice! Not as buff as the traditional Venom, but it still retains the feral, insane, demonic vibe. Spidey's symbiote costume is nice, too, not pure evil but it still has a negative feel to it.
