View Full Version : Event Registration, The Heroscapers Events Section, and You!

Hey all, I'm trying to trouble shoot this problem with the error messages and one of the things I think might be to blame is the event registration mod. Luckily it's no longer needed. Its time we started making the standard method for registering for a tourney the Events Section.
Like the rest of the sections on Heroscapers it is a seperate user database and so event planners and registrants will have to sign up for the events section. It is wise to give your event a space on the calendar in the events section and a sister thread in the forums for discussion and further advertising purposes.
I appreciate your cooperation in this matter. I think your event will be easier to find by the public and easier for them to get a better idea of the size of the tourney. The sister thread will help in ease to find by forum members. just make sure you link them to your event in the events section for the purpose of registration.

Feedback on the new Events section is welcome here. Was it easy to use? Does it look good? Be specific about what you did and didn't like.

The new Event section looks great!!!
Glad to see events already posted.
Did anyone notice the little hexes in the background???

After I muddled through it it wasnt too bad. It would have been easier for me to know what to expect (I had to register, then log in, and it finally let me sign up). I kept trying to enter my login for these message boards thinking that was what they wanted. But I am old and computer illiterate so that is no suprise.

My theory is that if one person is willing to admit it was difficult, there are up to 10x as many who found it slightly confusing but didn't say anything. I am going to see what I can do to make the login more intuitive and obvious that it is not the same login as here.

No I'm the one to blame. If I could write code we'd have one database for users as you would expect. But I can't so instead all of the sections are separate existences and so all have separate user databases. I really wish a trusted member with coding knowledge would step forward and proffer time to make site improvements that I can not. But alas, that has yet to happen.

OK I tried to link directly to the event but it does not work that way. What am I doing wrong and how can we make it so that at a glance members can quickly look at an event?

Okay I just finished giving the layout an overhaul that hopefully makes it more uasable. I also added categories for different types of events (contests, tournaments, game days, etc.) At this time though I can't add a piece about needing to create a new login account there. I think that is important, but I need to wait to get to my computer to access the source files (I'm at work now.)
Feedback on the changes is appreciated!

The events themselves pop up in a separate window without the Events nav bar, so if you linked directly to the event the user would not be able to navigate back to the calendar. However if you don't care about this, if you right click anywhere in the event details pop up window, one of those Properties, More Info, Copy Link, or Send Link type of options will give you the full URL for that pop up page. Copy that URL and paste it in your thread.

I went backed and checked out the new layout. Even better!
This time I actually registered and put an event in. It seemed to go pretty easy (can't comment on the old system).
I also did a RSVP test. I RSVP'd for the event I created (GenCon SoCal) and for the Toronto Scapefest.
When I click on GCSC I see myself as an "Attending Member".
Point of interest: If you want to view what you've RSVP'd for Click "My RSVPs" (on left - simple - I know). It will tell you what you've RSVP'd for and allow you to un-RSVP from an event.
I had a heck of a time trying to unregister for the Toronto Scapefest (sorry guys won't be able to make it).

OK maybe I'm just being daft, but does anybody else think that this thing is confusing and somewhat clunky? I mean I go to the event page and I just want to look at March to see what is going on and it is a confusing mess trying to get there. How are my attendees supposed to find my event if it is such a hassle getting there?

I had it as a calendar set up you could advance through. Funrun seems to have changed that. Hopefully she has an idea in store for navigating through calendar months.
The search bar is quite predominate. I clicked on it and typed in Texas and your event popped up.
However, funrun, typing in Ohio didn't cause your event to show up. A lesson to all include your state in your gameday description for seach purposes, not just your city.

Okay, I set it to show 6 months out. This should include any tourney currently in the works.

I tried it when it was a calendar layout, but I never could get it to accept a posting. I'll give it a try and leave some feedback later today.
EDIT: just tried it again and I got the same thing. I fill out my event and hit the add event and get this:
DB Error: syntax error
I've tried changing things and simplifying things, but I always get the same thing.

Where did the people who registered for the events go? It was displaying who was registered for an event. That let you know what kind of interest level it was generating.
Also I wasn't able to figure it out by copying and pasting code, but the events page needs a navigation menu like the rest of the pages for getting around the site.

OK maybe I'm just being daft, but does anybody else think that this thing is confusing and somewhat clunky?Of course it is clunkier than the in-thread Registration feature.
The question is - if that was taken away (to fix the "p s y" error), is this the best solution possible? (edit - IT DIDN'T FIX THE PROBLEM. SO BRING BACK THE IN-THREAD REGISTRATION FEATURE)
It probably is. There are probably a limited number of popularly-accepted and tested Calender mods out there.
Does it impose a handicap to registering for events? Yes.
Does it drastically reduce the number of people that will be motivated enough to register a new account, log in and properly navigate that database? Yes.
Does it make it harder for interested event attendees to know who all is gonna be at an event? Yes.
But that's just the way it is.

It's brand freaking new and we are working on it. I wasn't talking about fixing the P s y errors I was talking about connectivty errors that we've been experiencing. And I dare you to find a better calendar/events function with registration features out there for little to no cost.

I must have been in admin mode or something. :P That means you can't see who else has registered unless your running the event. Not sure I care for that. I guess if an event runner really wants to let people know who is attending the event they'll have to copy paste into the event details. Maybe when you RSVP for an event you can see who else has for that event.

Since you mentioned NorCal ...
I can only see the RSVPs via the "My RSVP" link or a seach
If I click on the event from the "home page" it only provides an option to RSVP (which I already have)
On the plus side, the event only lists me once when I double RSVP, however, the event shows up twice on "My RSVP" page. I was able to unregister from the extra RSVP without effecting my orignal RSVP.

I was wrong and phase shifted for bit, but I've got it figured out.
A doble RSVP adds you to the event linked from the home page, but then creates a phantom event of the same name in your "My RSVP" page ... in the future (6 months). I deleted the actual event and was lost for a while, but now I'm found.

Another thing to keep in mind, for the most part only those of us whom are most active will be planning events. So once we master the setting up of events we'll be in better shape.
I think Fun is really on the right path here with the making it plain that you have to register for the events section to participate (RSVP).
I think many forum members lose sight of the fact that they only account for about 20% of all visitors of the site. Sure they visit the most, but they are not the majority. Not too many people have mastered the art of forum navigation. I remember my first visit to a public forum was quite disorienting and off putting. If I wouldn't have by pure accident stumbled on Atarak's cards on .net and got excited about the idea I never would have bothered with the site, thinking its not for me.
That is why when I took over the site I wanted to make it accessible to average joes. Thus the front page articles. (P.S. if you fancy yourself a writer PM me about the possibility of writing front page articles I'd like the thing to update more and find myself pressed for time.) And now the events section. A listing of upcoming events, when we get the kinks worked out and make it a pleasant experience, will help to include that other 80% of site patrons.
If you'll be patient with us I think all of our events will benefit. If you are too lazy to put your name in an auto-approve database... (I wish you didn't have to, but until a code writing god send shows up who can rebuild the back-end of the site without killing the front end you'll have to spend the 60 seconds it takes to fill out a couple fields)
Not to mention more is coming to the event section as well. Standardized methods of setting up events, event checklists, and other such tools to help facilitate the running of events. I also hope to engage a fun point system, whereby event winners receive recognition and "points" for their victory. The number of points hinging on the number of attendees to the event. I hope to do a full standings board, which will hopefully give a ballpark of who the top players are around the nation. I think it'll be a fun little addition to really help fill out heroscapers as event planning central for Heroscape.
If more people will be like Saytr (understanding and adaptive) and less like Reaper (condescending and a complete ****), I think we'll really be able to work together to make this thing take off.
Any other ideas about helping to make heroscapers a fun and happening place for heroscape events are more than welcome here.

I went into the database now and deleted everything that I could tell was a duplicate entry. HEH had many attempts at signing up, and all traces of who signed up for the first NorCal event are gone, so hopefully things won't be conflicting now. However it appears in the database that 6 unique users are signed up for NorCal event and yet in no area of the calendar does it show more than 3 people. Similarly for my Cinci event there are about 12 unique users signed up and only about 8 are actually displayed in the calendar RSVP. I need to look into this more later.
Please let me know if what I did this morning seems to have changed anything for anyone.

~ dnutt and seymama are the only ones in the RSVP window from the NorCal event link on the "Home" page ... the rest of us only show up on the RSVP window from the link on "My RSVP" page.
hope this helps with trouble shooting

Thank Gawd. I thought it was just my ineptitude! There is some whackiness with that Events feature.

Yeah, my Nov 18th event is whacked out too. If you click on the link to it in the home page, and register there, you get registered for april 30th 2007, but if you click the 18th in the little calendar on the right hand side and then my event, you get registered for the correct date.
Whacky.

heh. yeah the RSVP feature is pretty messed up. i get the 4/30/07 business.
plus, on reoccurring events, trying to RSVP for one of them signs you up for all of them. (and yet the "RSVP for all occurrences" is still active.)
think i'll just keep track of this in the first post of my Event thread back on the forum. :(

In my trying to figure out the database I discovered that in registering for multiday events (GenCon 2007) most people only actually RSVPed for one day instead of all of them.
To register for all the days of a multi-day event, you must click "RSVP for all occurrences" You can tell if you did this because in your My RSVPs list it will say "Gen Con Indy 2007 - All Occurrences" instead of "Gen Con Indy 2007 - Occurrence Date: 8/16/2007".

with the reoccurring "Chicagoland Heroscaping" event, i RSVPed to just one (the occurence on December 2). then in MyRSVPs it says the date of the one i RSVPed for is 4/30/07.
but here's the really weird thing. no matter what other occurence i click on, it shows i'm attending it (all of them) even though i only signed up for one. and the option to RSVP for just one occurrence is no longer there (but the one for RSVPing to all occurrences is still there).

I gave it a try and I see what your saying. The thing is all buggy. Bad code I suspect. :( I'll try and contact its creator and see if he's working on or has a fix.

Unless it is already in there somewhere and I'm missing it, it would nice if the events section had a link to get back to the forums.

I have discovered I get different RSVP lists for my event if I click on it from the calendar versus clicking on it from My RSVPs area.
Gary I think if you unregister for your event, then you should be able to re-register for just one day. I had to do this for myself with Gencon 07.
This whole area of the site is a high priority for me, but so are other things in my life.

Syntax errors mean you either typed an apostrophe or a quote or perhaps some other non alphanumeric character. I don't think it has anything to do with length, when you shortened it you probably took out an apostrophe or quote too. If this doesn't work. take out everything that isn't a letter or number and try again, it should go through.
I am not sure if there is anything I can do about this syntax error, but at the very least I want to make a Help doc that lists stuff like this.

gave it another try but it behaves the same way. i think the problem is i'm expecting it to behave in a different and more logical way than it does. plus i still get that bogus date of 4/30/07 in the MyRSVPs view.
when i click on "Current Month" view, i see all the occurrences for "Chicagoland Heroscaping". so you would think that if i clicked on the one scheduled for say 12/02, the popup window that shows details would show a date of 12/02. but it doesn't. it just shows the same "start date" of 11/18 for the first occurrence of the series of events and who is attending ANY occurrence, no matter which occurrence i click on. it would be better, i think, if the "details" window showed the date of the occurrence that was selected and who is attending JUST THAT occurrence.

I have found that the events db does not like '
so no contractions (We've don't we'll) and I've seen some internet urls include that character. You can convert urls using http://www.tinyurl.com/ to get rid of extraneous characters.

I'm still getting weirdness with the events section.
My RSVPs section it's listing our Jan 20th event way out at May 31st 2007.
From the MY RSVPs section it does not show me as RSVPed and provides an option to RSVP (very strange considering the section).
From the My Events section it does not show me as RSVPed and provides an option to RSVP.
Only from the Home view am I shown as RSVPed.
Also, when creating the invite, my formatting kept getting altered ... minor annoyance.

UPDATE: H_E_H RSVPed, but he is not listed on the event from the Home view, only when the event is viewed from the My RSVPs and the My Events sections. I had to RSVP a second time (from the My Events section) to see him listed. When I RSVPed a second time, however, it created a second NorCal event on the My RSVP section with the correct date ... both HEH and I are listed as RSVPed in both events.
I'm not sure how the Events Section is coded, but if it were a database, I'd say it may be creating a records for each view of an event and having problems keeping them reconciled. :2cents:
UPDATE 1/4/07: When checking the events section I found that I was no longer RSVPed for the 1/20/07 NorCal Tourney from the Events Home view. At first I thought I was logged out, but My Events showed otherwise and I still had my two previous RSVPs in the My RSVPs view. RSVPing to the event in the Home view added a third NorCal Tourney dated 6/30/07 in My RSVPs. HEH and I are listed in all three events.

I'm still planning to try and figure this out. I played with the creators test site and didn't have the types of problems we're having, so I'm guessing there is just some file mismatch. It is a heck of a lot of code :(

I had a similar problem with my calendar mod.
I found that when I went back to the original setup and started from there the only difference in the 2 sites was google ads.
With google ads the calendar would not work.
Without google ads, calendar works great.
Maybe you could look there?

Yes, we seem to be having a problem with the calendar section. I'll see what we can do.
Sorry for the inconvenience. You can check the Events and meet other scapers forums for meetups, there is the start of an index of regular gatherings here:

Alright so Gencon signups begin this saturday. Do we know about the Heroscape events yet? I know WotC hasn't done anything official yet but I was wondering if we were still planning on running some events. I have missed out every year and I want to make sure I'm going this year.
I also didn't want to start a thread about this cause I know someone more capable will do it.

Gencon event registration isn't available until mid-April per the Gencon website. Grungebob and other excellent people are working on ideas for events, per his post in the Heroscapers @ Gencon '08 thread. (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?p=486574#518352)
