I just went through the member listings and realized I am the only one, posted that is, in Alabama. I am new to these forums and looking for players in the Mobile area, so if there is anyone out here, give me a holla.

I just changed mine listing from AL a few weeks ago. Arrived in my new city of Tallahassee, FL last week. Not that it would have been much help to you, I was on the other end of the state. But if you are willing to come on down I-10 for a few hours we'll make it a game day.

I'm a completely addicted heroscaper in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, wondering if there's anyone else in this state who shares my fervor? I have a casual playing buddy, but no one who gets quite as excited about this game as I do.

I agree completely, actually. If I knew of more people in Alabama who were on here and knew of anyone interested in the game who had a place to host such a thing in B-Ham, I'd be all for it.
All I know for sure is that I don't have room in my apartment in Tuscaloosa or the supplies to run one all on my own.
But, yeah, a Bama tourney would be a dream come true for me.

All right, how about this? Everybody interested in an Alabama tourney (in Birmingham, since that's probably the most centralized location, and it sounds like Joe can get a place together, writes a single entry with the following:
1) What dates in July they are available for.
2) How many people they would be bringing to said tourney.
That way we can settle on a date and get a range of people. I'll start.
1) 1 person
2) July 12, July 19, July 26 (all Saturdays)

Anyone have preferences on how we're going to run this tourney? Such as round time limit, swiss/single elimination/double elimination, max point cost (500? 520? 495? 610? etc.?). These are all things we should settle on in advance, as well as what maps we'll be using, how many we need, and who's bringing what.
jogrimm
June 11th, 2008, 08:25 PM
My suggestions: 1000 pt battles, single elimination.
Can bring 2 tables 30" x 60"
At least 3 different maps.
1. open terrain
2. tight terrain
3. moderate terrain
I will bring my terrain ( 3 RotV, 1 Marro set )
All I need is your input. Thanks .

My suggestions: 1000 pt battles, single elimination. Be warned: 1000pt battles are going to run around 1h 45m each. With down time between rounds, you're looking at 2hrs/round!
IAmBatman
June 12th, 2008, 02:31 PM
If you need more terrain than that, let me know. I might bring some just in case we need an extra map to help things go well.
As far as input, though, I'm thinking 1000 points and single elimination might not be the best option. In a tournament setting, I'd rather play more, smaller games than one or two big, big games, know what I mean? The more people we compete against, the more it seems like a true tournament.
Therefore, we might be better served doing a Swiss Style tourney and lowering the points to somewhere between 500-700. Just my opinion, though - if you're doing the set-up work, you get final say, as far as I'm concerned.
jogrimm
June 13th, 2008, 08:31 PM
Battles of 500 - 750 are good for me.
In turn limited battles we usually play 1000+ pts.
I will go with whatever you guys agree on.
How many battle fields are we going to need?
The ticalla jungle arrived at the house today. Do we want to use these pieces & the new rules?
Peace is only a respite between wars.
IAmBatman
June 14th, 2008, 01:42 AM
I say that yeah, I'm all for using the new jungle - especially if there's a BoV map with it by the time we have the tourney.
I think we need to settle for sure on one of those dates in July and try to figure out as well as possible how many people we're getting.
Am I correct that the only ones who are definite right now are me and you and the (three?) people you're bringing?
That'd put it at five, which means we probably wouldn't need that many maps ... but that we could definitely do more than single elimination. Having a better idea of the numbers is going to make it much easier to plan the rest of the tourney.
jogrimm
June 15th, 2008, 12:23 AM
I can bring 4 people maybe 5 counting myself. I was thinking 19 July as the best date. Idea, 750pts., 10 - 12 turn limit per battle. If you would bring some terrain and help decide on battle field setup it will make things move easily. 6 people total, I think 3 battlefields will be enough.
What do you think?
No greater love does a man have, than he who would give his life for a friend.
IAmBatman
June 15th, 2008, 02:14 AM
July 19 sounds good. Let's make it official.
I think it'd make more sense to have a time limit than a turn limit, that way we'd know for sure how much time we'd be spending, and also there'd be a chance to get in enough turns to finish every game (hopefully).
I think a starting zone limit of 24 spaces helps larger games stay shorter too, so I'd suggest that.
With 6 people, 3 battlefields should be great, and make things run quickly. I think we should look at the BoV thread (I'll link it at the end of this post) and pick three maps that work well for us.
I plan on using Jormi_Boced's Hot Heights map for a tourney I'm doing with family in Maine, so I'd be happy to bring/set-up that one.
Here's the link to the map thread: http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=5725
I'd say figure out what you have the terrain for and choose two from there to use. I can bring more terrain than just for the one map if you need, just let me know.
If we put an hour limit on matches and had three maps set up so people were playing all the time, I think we could easily do double elimination, if not swiss style. I think a good goal is for people to be able to keep playing (and keep their games relevant) up to as close to the end as possible.
jogrimm
June 15th, 2008, 10:12 PM
19 July it is. I looked at those maps and my suggestion would be swamp thing & road rampage. Double Elim. is good for me.
What is a good start time for the tourney?
If we limit each game to an hour will that allow every player to play ever other player?
Do we need a prize of some sort? If so, what type?
I could use some help making sure all battlefields are setup prior to start.
I'm good with the 24 start zone. If you will bring some more terrain that will be a great help.

June 16th, 2008, 01:42 PM
I like your map choices - that will give us a road map, a swamp map, and a lava map - some nice variety.
Let's see ... if we end up with 5 players, then every player could play every other player on 3 maps in 5 hours. If we end up with 6 players, then every player could play every other player on 3 maps in 5 hours as well. Actually, the only difference would be that we could only use 2 maps at a time with 5 players, while we could use all three maps (and have everyone playing) at a time for 6 players.
I think 5 hours max is good for a tournament - obviously some games would go shorter than the 1 hour time limit, though with 750 points, probably not many.
I think it'd be reasonable to want to end around dinner time (maybe 6?), so we could start around noon or 1 pm, possibly? I'll be driving up from Tuscaloosa, so I really wouldn't want it to start any earlier than that.
I'll definitely bring the materials for Hot Heights and set it up when I get there.
As for prizes, I don't know. This will be the first real tournament I've been to. I suppose we could all bring something small (like a booster or something) if you want, but I'm just as happy making it purely for fun, especially with it being the first one (if it goes annual or something).
IAmBatman
June 17th, 2008, 03:55 PM
Also, we need to make a decision on glyphs. I usually don't play with them, so I'd be fine going without, but if you want to have them, let me know if I need to bring any, and which you think we should use. I assume if we use any, it'd be face down on the spots designated on the BoV maps.
IAmBatman
June 17th, 2008, 04:01 PM
And, also, I was thinking, if we just want everyone to play everyone else, we could just do 5 rounds of swiss style and that way we wouldn't need to worry about double elimination and some people playing irrelevant games after a couple rounds (like if I lose in the first two rounds, my next three are worthless to me, even if I win them all). Then we could stop after 5 rounds and make the final determination of the winner based on record and then tie-breakers like Total Losing Points (amount of points you killed in games you lost). No more than one player should end up undefeated, since we'll all be playing each other, so we wouldn't really need any playoffs.
So, this way, everyone would get to play the whole time, and every game would be relevant. What do you think?
jogrimm
June 17th, 2008, 08:54 PM
We don't use the glyphs either, so I was thinking no glyphs. If only 5 players show, we go 10 turns per battle with everyone fighting 5 battles each and tally up all points at the end to decide a winner. We can run a tie breaker if need be. I would like to start the tourney at noon if possible.
We don't have to do prizes at all it was just a suggestion. As far as the turn limits we could require each player to place markers and be ready to for their next move within 2 minutes. This should allow all games to be played well before 6 pm and allow time for any tie breaker if needed. What do you think?
" To lead by force is tyranny, to lead by cohersion is leadership."
IAmBatman
June 18th, 2008, 12:30 AM
No glyphs is good.
I still don't see why we couldn't do a hard time limit instead of a turn limit - but maybe a turn limit is easier to keep track of? Either way's fine, I suppose.
Noon as a starting time is good.
Let's stick to no prizes - it's not like it's going to be a large group or anything. I don't think there should be a strict time limit on moves or time between moves, just a civil understanding that no one wants to be a jerk and waste a bunch of time setting up instead of playing (I know I don't!). I think 6 pm as a cut off point is good too.
Sounds good! Anything else we're missing?
jogrimm
June 18th, 2008, 08:05 PM
With a turn limit everyone plays an equal amount of turns. This allows us to have points figured based on all fifty turns and the winner can only be decided at the end of the day. This way, all games played are important and no one plays an unimportant game as all game scores will count. As for marker placement time limit, no one spends more than two minutes placing markers. I can't think of anything else we need.

June 19th, 2008, 01:48 PM
Oh, yeah, one more question. Are we allowing Marvel figures in tourney armies?
jogrimm
June 19th, 2008, 08:26 PM
No. Heroscape only. Idea...I would like to start a southern league for heroscape players in and around the Al., Ga., Fl., Tn. If you have any ideas, it sure would help.

Batman, question, how many fieldable points could you put on a field at one time? Fieldable points (per common & unique rules)?
IAmBatman
June 20th, 2008, 12:56 PM
Heroscape only is fine.
Let's leave the southern league discussion for another thread (and maybe another time, after we see how this tourney goes!)
I'm not sure I understand your question about "fieldable" points? We agreed on a 750 point, 24 starting zone space limit, right?
jogrimm
June 20th, 2008, 09:10 PM
Fieldable points: The points of all your heroscape figures that can legally be put on the field. I am not changing the tourney points. The tourney is still set at 750pts.
IAmBatman
June 21st, 2008, 09:13 AM
OK ... still not completely sure what you're asking here, but let me take a stab at it ...
By Fieldable points do you mean what all, for example, I might bring (like I might bring 1000 points worth of figures) and then I can choose an army of 750 out of that each round? I'm not sure if that's it or not ... if not, please try to give a better example. I'm usually not this obtuse, but I'm just not following you here.
And also, I have a sort of big favor/question to ask. Is it too late to change the tournament date from the 19th to the 12th? After talking with my girlfriend, I realized she's moving on the 19th and I'd really like to be there to help her. Hopefully with this long before the tourney it's still possible to move it?
Let me know, and thanks!

I think we can move it to the 12th. I'll call everyone and see. Give me a few days. If you had to field every heroscape figure you have, how many points would be on the field?

I really appreciate you trying to move things around. It'd really help me big time.
So that's what fieldable points is. Ah, ok, I gotcha now ... hmm, that's a good question. I'm going to have to do some major math for this one (and take some guesses on how many multiples I have of some commons, since I'm at work).
My best guess (unless I'm forgetting something) is 17,030 fieldable points. (19,605 if you include Marvel).

Hey All,
I'd be interested in coming from Atlanta to your tournament if there is still room, I could probably bring some more 'Scapers with me as well. I see you are deciding between the 12th & 19th of July. I'm good for the 19th, but the 12th is my group's monthly 'Scape game. What are the details of this tournament, they seem to be spread around in this thread?

750 point tourney, 24 starting zone spaces. We'll be playing on three BoV maps (though if you bring a posse, we'll increase that number - I'm bringing one myself, but can bring at least one more). Still deciding on final dates, as you said. I, personally, am really holding out for the 12th, though, since it'd be very difficult (I've discovered) for me to do it on the 19th.
It'll be in Birmingham - Jogrimm will have to comment on the location. I'll be bringing myself, and Jogrimm said there will be 5 or 6 people in his group. I'm not sure if we've completely settled on tournament style (double elimination, swiss style, etc) just b/c we didn't know for sure how many people would be there. Oh, and no Marvel. Am I leaving anything out?

Hey Krug, It looks like it will be the 12th of July. I would love to have more scapers at tourney. Rules are simple, each battle lasts 10 ten turns, everyone plays a total of 50 turns, all points destroyed in each battle talleyed up at the end of the 50 turns to determine the champion. If I missed anything, let me know and I will correct it.

Sorry Guys, the 12th of July is bad for me. I could have made your original date of the 19th. I'll just have to keep checking this thread periodically and try to make the next one!

Krug before you run off. when do you guys play regularly? Are you & the guys willing to meet half way between Birmingham & Atlanta once a month? If so, give me dates and times & I'll make arrangements. We would like to meet some new players.

We meet for 'Scape once a month, usually the second Saturday. I'd have to check with the group to see if they would want to caravan your way on a monthly basis. Did you have some kind of location to meet up at in mind? We welcome new players as well...

We meet every Sat. if possible. We could meet somewhere around the state line. I can look and find a location if your group is up for it. What point size battles do you guys usually play? We play anywhere from 1000 to 2000 pts. Usually we play 1250pts.

I'm still trying to get answers from everyone about meeting up with you guys, everyone seems to be quite busy right now! As for point sizes for battles, it varies for us. Sometimes playing large epic battles with teams and 1000-2500+ point armies, and sometimes smaller 1 on 1 skirmishes of about 500-750 point armies. We always play on one giant battlefield that I redesign for each 'Scape night. To get an idea of what we're playing on, check out my pics in the gallery. I'd put a couple in this post, but for some unknown reason I cannot attach pics to my posts any longer :|.

I checked out your pics. Very nice set up. Still looking to meet up and play some scape. If you can give me when and where, I'll get the guys together. We usually play 1 on 1 battles from 1000 to 2500pts. We would like to start a league that plays on a regular basis. Schedule games and throw atourney about every 3 or 4 months to name a league/season champion. Let me know if you & your crew are up for it.
