I used to have a comics thread, but I can't locate it here. Must've been pruned.
:? Most of you guys are talking game systems. Haha, I feel so antiquated. But oh well, my other hobby besides Heroscape is comics. And what a doozy of releases are expected these last 2 months:
DC's Showcase Presents series gets better and better. Big thick, phonebook-sized b&w reprints (like Marvel's Essential series) of classic DC series (technically early Shazam doesn't fall in this category).
Here's what's coming up this holiday season:
Phantom Stranger, Unknown Soldier and C.C. Beck's Shazam!!

In December from Marvel,
Essential Defenders 2 & Cap volume 3!

Also in December, Drumroll please, ...................
Blade of the Immortal vol 16!!! Gorgeous artwork, sleek storytelling. Ah, can't wait for this latest chapter!
Some cool panels (but lame music) in this slideshow:

Wow, what a great way to end a fantastic year!!
Any comic fans expecting any TPB releases this fall/winter?

I'm really wanting The Essential Defenders Vol.2.
I checked out the first one last Spring/Summer and had a blast reading it.
I can't believe I didn't like that comic growing up.
That also makes me want to get some of the Dr. Strange volumes.
Another comic character I never cared for growing up, but better see in my MarvelScape board sometime soon.
"Blade Of The Immortal" for sure. I've only read the first one so far, but you were right H, very cool.
I keep scouring the used bookstores for the earlier books, I always see the later stuff.
Last, but not least, Zombies, Zombies, and more Zombies.
By that I mean, I want to get my hands on the "Walking Dead" TPBs, and the Marvel Zombies Trade too. Written by the same guy, I'm pretty sure.
I've read the first dozen or so issues, but I've been away from it for awhile.
"World War Z".
That's getting read over winter break for sure.
I know it's not a comic, but It's something else I'm *coughs* dying to read.
BTW, http://www.mikegrell.com/mikegrell/gallery.jsp?gallery=0
I'm loving this site.
Grell is amazing. I want to track down more of this stuff.
This is another one of my, "Why wasn't I reading this?" quandries. :?

The Dr. Strange stuff is great fun. Gorgeous Steve Ditko altnerate realms artwork in vol. 1.

Dug through some of my old comics from when I collected them in the 80's and found first several Moon Knight comics. I'll have to re-read them when I get a chance.
Also had first wolverine solo
Some other different ones like The Question and The Blue Beetle.
Of course X-Men, X-Factor, West Coast Avengers, Thor, Ironman and Spiderman
There is also a Green Arrow trilogy graphic novels/comics that look pretty cool.
Gosh, I havent read any of these things in ten to fifteen years.

No I didn't know that HEH. I haven't been really into comics in many years, but had dug out some recently just for kicks.
Thanks a lot for the link. I'll have to consider getting that book. I haven't heard of the Marvel Essentials (out of the comic loop), but will have to try to find time to get back into it, at least somewhat. Heck, I'm still trying to finish the Clash of Kings book that I started months ago, at least I'm in the 600's now :)
Thanks again.

I just got this
http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/P/1582406197.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_V49481831_.jpg
and it is fantastic. The second hardcover comes out in January.
I'm going to sell off the first four trade paperbacks I have, which are just plain reader copies. The hardcovers have the original cover art gallery and are printed on nice paper. Plus, Book one features a small side story that shows a little about what happened with a couple of characters that appeared early in the series and were not seen again.
If you are into zombies, these are a must read and a steal for under $20 each on Amazon.

Boom, I don't know if that'll the be the actual cover of the Essential Defenders vol. 2. I'll let you know if I find an actual cover online somewhere.
This Defenders volume is special for me - these are the issues I had as a kid (a couple of them were reprinted in Vol. 1)! My dad found a ton of Defenders out back of his work and brought them home for my sister and I . we divided them evenly, but it was only a matter of time before she handed the other half over to me. Heh, heh.
Great issues with cool characters: Sons of the Serpent, Squadron Sinister, Son of Satan,
and....
The Headmen! Look at those freaks! Ruby was the coolest. A round, red orb for a head and it sprouted tentacles and such!!!
What freaks!!!
And what's gorilla bodied Nagan doing to them? Zapping them with Yanni? Muzak???

Hey Hex, remember a Defenders issue where some reporter did a televised bio on them and at the end announced any hero could join? They ended up with lots of costumed characters at their place, mostly dudes like Ultraman and Stingray, but I remember the Falcon also showing up to "try out" for the Defenders. I loved that story.

Fun issue, I believe they separate into several teams to fight some threat and evaluate the new recruits. Favourite line from that book is a Hellcat line where she's trying to name their team that goes,"How about Herc, Hellcat and the Ripsnorting Super Hunks".
Haa they don't write like that anymore.

Not sure, my stuff is put away pretty well, but I'll see if I can dig it out. It had to be in the mid to late 70's though. That's when I did most of comic collecting. The reporter was a dude w/ beard and sunglasses or glasses, IIRC.
This issue sticks out for me 'cuz I always thought Captain Ultra (not Ultraman, sorry) was a pretty cool and funky looking hero. Lots of color on his uniform, strong, and could see through stuff ala Superman. I also remember him trying out for the "Fearsome Four" in a Fantastic Four issue. The Wizard, Sandman and Trapster were looking for a fourth, and Captain Ultra wowed them w/ his flying and strength. His allergic reaction to smoke did him in, though  . The Brute finally got the last spot.

Woah Kenjib! Didn't know you were a comic fan! Or an APE fan! Or is it your wife who's the fan?
Never was a fan of Strangers, but I like some of Kochalka's stuff.
I really liked King Cat Comics (http://www.king-cat.net/) back in the 90s. I was very big on the small press stuff. Even attempted a few of my own zines, but would always lose steam in the venture.
I sold off my small press/xerox comic collection in small lots on eBay. Fetched some great money too. I wish I still had those. Many were from the 80s.
Here are two one-page strips from my small press-inspired days:
School's Fool (http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/artwork/SCHOOLSFOOLsmaller.jpg) and Him & Her (http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/artwork/HIMANDHERsmall.jpg)

Hey, you're talented. I like the strips. What was that second one going to be about? It looks interesting. I've always been the kind of person that starts up a million different little art projects and never finishes them so I totally know how that goes. In my case it's gaming and music though. My wife and I were both moderately into the indies for a few years but now it's kind of sporadic. My favorites were Steve Weissman's comics - Yikes, Tykes, etc. She even got me an original painting commissioned for Weissman which hangs in our house. We got to know him a little bit back then but haven't been in touch in years.

I would love to see an image of that comission! I have a couple of Yikes, Tykes! There are several other titles/artists from back then that I really enjoy, but cannot recall immediately.
Gary Panter has always been one of my favorite under-scene artists.

Aw shucks, thanks Kenjib.
Him and Her was a sketch that grew. Back then, I had no patience for sketching, defining, erasing, inking, etc. So I would just draw straight to ink. I have sketchbooks full of straight to ink artwork and comics. some decent, other not so good.
You can tell by the woman that Him and Her started rough and got more defined at the end.
I just liked how everything flowed together. Total stream of consciousness. I didn't think too much where I was going or what I was doing next. When I finished, most of the images locked together pretty well. I like going back and realizing how much my mind was working on a subconscious level. The story starts with the girl's face and ends with his.
It's in the shape of a letter Z with the middle pictures bookending each other or referring back to the previous frames (hands and feet notably).
The big ugly guy is me, stumbling through life and with little self=esteem. The girl was my girlfriend and the one stable constant in my life at the time.
It sounds heady, but I'm not like that at all. I just think everything clicked for me in this strip. And came out halfway decent for being a straight-to-ink piece.
Sorry, but you asked...

A man with great taste in CB's. One book I never miss picking up every year is the Small Press EXPO anthology. Along with The Good, The Bad and The Ugly there is always a gem or two. A new comer with that spark and style that brings back the excitement.

But serious, I knew I'd have to check out those "Essentials Vols." after I saw the "Masterworks" exhibit last Summer.

I saw some of the essentials at Barnes and Noble today, looked beautiful. Kind of pricey for me at the moment, but maybe after the holiday mad spending spree winds down, I might have to pick up an essential or two. I picked up "Storm of Swords" by George R.R. Martin while I was there since I'm about to finish the second book in the series "The Clash of Kings", so I have about 1000 pages to read that will keep me busy for quite a while.
I'll keep checking this thread for reviews and recommendations though.
Oh, as aside for HEH. I was listening to a Chicago radio station today and somehow zombies got mentioned. Some caller told the dj that something he heard on the station a couple years ago inspired him to start a business for Zombie killing stuff. I guess he sold stuff/weapons and such to kill zombies. After two years, though, he's calling it quits. Maybe he didn't hear about wave 6. :D

I was reading my Unknown Soldier collection last night. Again, Joe Kubert proves he's the master of the comic war stories! Ah, great stuff in Unkown Soldier (hey, U.S.!)
Here is a page from his origin story. The nameless U.S. joins his older brother to fight for his country ( at one point, his brother Harry even forsees Peral Harbor). Harry jumps on a grenade lobbed by a Japanese soldier and sacrifices himself for his younger bro.
The younger brother is horribly disfigured (later on they actually show the U.S.'s face!!!) and becomes a master of disguise to fight the evil Axis forces!
Great cinematic page. Kubert is a god with his rough, almost rushed artwork!
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/Comic%20scans/usa018.jpg
Two exciting covers by Kubert. I've seen soooo many Kubert war comic covers and nearly all of them are masterpieces:

Btw, when comparing Marvel's Essential collection to DC's Showcase Presents, DC kicks major butt. All pages are numbered and they've reprinted the stories in such a way that each cover is displayed on the reader's right side. It's not a big deal, but makes all the difference when looking at Marvel's formatting.
Great stuff! A whole library of comics I never had a chance to read as a kid!!!

So they're running around in a circle? That was my favorite comic as a kid. I loved reading about the history of the characters. That was my bible (no offense to the religious people out there). There was also the collection that came out shortly thereafter for those who died. I think half of them have come back to life since.
What does everyone think of them bringing back Captain Mar-vell?

I never realized that the connection between issues three and four is screwed up and why is X-Factor shown, as well as Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, and Ice-man? Clones? Wonder who was the lucky A.I.M. guy that made the cover. And why is Longshot flying?
Those were the times!! Thanks Hex!!

I have it (sans dust jacket  ). It's awesome. It was published by Harmony in the 1970s. I read it when I was about 12 and loved it. I grew up w/the live action Shazam! show (which sux now that I've seen it as an adult, but I still watch it when it's on). Unfortunately, the cheapest I've seen it recently is for $65. But Valentine's Day is just around the corner. I'm telling you, it's worth every penny!
I love the old heroes. I was a huge fan of DC's !mpact series and that lead me to buy several of the old Archie publications of the !mpact heroes (which I still have :D ).

Manji, is the 'Immortal' character in the series. He's a bit like Wolverine. His body is infested
with these magical worms. They heal any wound he suffers - except the losts of one of his eyes (pre-worm infestation). Manji is scrubby, dirty, and walks around wearing a Kimono with a gigantic swastika on the back. (Note: this version of the swastika is not associated with the Nazis) Concealed within the robe he carries about a dozen weapons.
Here he is waaaaay back in volume 2 (Cry of the Worm)

Since I'm on a BotI/scanner kick, I'll share another segment of this awesome series. I've scanned these pages and uploaded them to Amazon
for curious folks who'd consider buying this series.
This is the battle between Manji and Makie in Volume 3: Dreamsong - my favorite volume in the series so far.
Makie is probably the most deadly character in the entire series. She can whomp the butt on any of her male counterparts.
Disregard the first panel of this page as it is the final frame to one of the other character's scene. We've transitioned to a fight already in progress in an alley way.
Notice the leg sliding back in the second panel. The third panel depicts Makie completing the slide and echoes the previous panel in motion and composition. I love it.
Artist Hiroaki Samura does great legs, hands, and feet. They express just as much emotion as his character's facial and overall body language:
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/Comic%20scans/DSA.jpg
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/Comic%20scans/DSB.jpg
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/Comic%20scans/DSC.jpg
This next sequence is later in the lengthy battle between Makie and Manji.
She's already taken off one of his arms. This is the quiet before the final storm:
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/Comic%20scans/DSD.jpg
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/Comic%20scans/DSE.jpg
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/Comic%20scans/DSF.jpg
The final stroke. The artist used to do these glorious, final-hit, two-page spreads in the early books. He's done away with them. I wish he'd bring them back - Looks cool!
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/Comic%20scans/DSG.jpg
And I really dig how both characters come to a sliding, skidding halt in the second panel below. Everything is caught up in the fury and motion - the tree, the clouds!!!
Violent, but man, that's some delicious artwork and storytelling.

Ah man! I'm simply lovin' reading these Showcase Presents series.
I'm into my second volume of House of Mystery and discovred a story I read as child!
The Demon Within is story I'd read in one of DC Comics' giant, Treasury editions (Anyone ever own one of those oversized reprint comics?).
Anyway, The Demon Within is a classic tale. Back in the 1972, it won a Shazam Award for Best Individual & dramatic Short Story.
It did indeed leave an impression on me. The demon freaked me out, but the ending scared me even more.
If you have a moment, read these seven pages and discover a classic of the comic short story!
The late, great artist, Jim Aparo, is in prime form with his artwork.
Enjoy...

Joah, I guess I'm just very excited at seeing these DC reprints. Especially House of Mystery. These are the comics I'd get at the flea market, or from my dad who would bring home dozens in cardboard boxes.
They're also those issues I'd only seen the cover while reading another DC title.
DC were difficult for me to find regularly, so I had spotty collections.

No, I'm not buying any comics right now. I've kind of walked away from the industry for a while. I find most of what is being produced now lackluster overworked and recycled. There some gems still out there but to find one that is stocked regularly on the shelf is a rarity. I do get to look over a lot of what come out when visiting my buddies local shop, so I know what's going on. There are a few things I want but my spare moneys are gong to other places right now.
Every one you named was/is an excellent creator. I think the reprinting of this kind of material is a step in the right direct but both Marvel and DC have flooded the market with bad trades of recent and sub par books, that are now crowding out the far superior material. As much as it pain me to say I wish both would go bankrupted. The industry need a flushing in North America and rebirth in a new direction. Unfortunately the movie rights (producing bad movies) and merchandising moneys are keeping both these lumbering near sighted giants a float.
Ok rant over.

Used bookstores -especially comic/TPB-carrying outlets - are awesome. I miss the days sniffing around the used bookstores in Berkeley.
I want to read those Byrne Doom Patrols. Here's hoping they'll collect them together someday.
Dreadstar!!! Where's Reaper, the Jim Starlin fan?!?
I have that series some where. Nice art and colors.
You got House of Mystery!!! Too cool. Many of the stories leave a lot to be desired, but there's a ton of good artwork within!
EDIT: I just noticed the price tage on SP:HoM! WHoah, Joah! Nice price there!!!!
I started in on Showcase Presents: Legion of Super-Heroes. Good, innocent sci-fi, super-hero fun.

Wow, HeH...
That is outrageous. In an awesome way.
Well, you guys got me interested in going back and reading some comix. My bro loaned me what remains of his Marvel stuff - Mostly Byrne FF, some Uncanny X Men, Elektra, etc. I'm reading some Thor first since I'd never read any before. It's all 80's stuff. I think the last comic I bought was an Eightball like twelve years ago... I am really out of it.
Geez, I never knew Thor had this cheezy alter ego dude. Yuck!

I'm a massive fan.
Heroscape has taken a big chunk of that enthusiasm away.
Easier to buy and collect something like Heroscape if others can enjoy it.
Comics are a bit of a selfish hobby unless I can find someone to read my books.
Here's a bike helmet I inked about 9 years ago. I picked a lot of favorite comic characters as well as bands (of course the Fall is on there, but it's on the bottom part of the helmet and below the Kraftwerk segment):

Pure awesome.
The first book is amazing. The second volume left me just...dumbfounded. Couldn't believe what Alan Moore does to the characters in this one!
I think the only thing that may put some people off is Kevin O'Neill's angular, thin-lined artwork.
I personally love it, but then again, I was salivatin' for O'Neill's artwork on Marshall Law and Nemesis the Warlock.

Cobalt 60 was great. Vaughn's son, Mark picked it up the story and art after his father passed on. Cerebus was a mammoth undertaking by Dave Sim.
I never finished the Bone series, but it's recently been collected in a massive 1300-page book!
What an artistic helmet you have!
Keep in mind, I haven't worn it all that much. Kinda silly to ride around town with it on! I just pull it out when I have friends over to show them the characters.
Also, HEH, How the heck did you get all those comics!? you could entertain an army with that collection!
Been collecting TPBs since the early 90s. Mostly used bookstores in San Fran and Berkeley, eBay, and my buddy's comic shop.

OKAY, NOT QUITE COMICS, BUT MANGA AND FORERUNNERS OF THE FORM!
The Argus ran an article a few days ago about the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco.
The museum is featuring an exhibit about Osamu Tezuka, the godfather of manga.
The first Tuesday of each month is free, so I'm taking my oldest son to view the works!
I went to the museum's web site and to my utter surprise, learned that they're also featuring prints by master printermaker genius, Yo****oshi!!!!
I'm gonna plotz to see some of his prints. They have a handful on display:

Finally secured a set of the Lady Snowblood volumes 1-4 for a very affordable price.
I'm anxious to read these tales.
Although the covers are trying to get that Kill Bill vibe with the black and yellow color scheme(and these tales along with a Lady movie supposedly influenced the Tarentino's movie), I like how striking and designful they look.

and it is fantastic.
I know that I am necro-quoting as Annerios posted this back in December on page 1, but I just wanted to say that I just started reading this series and its fantastic so far.
I've never really been into comics that much but after reading the Star Wars Legacy series up to date, I wanted to check out some more stuff, so I came to this thread and this was the first thing that peaked my interest so I'm reading it, read the first 6 so far and am looking forward to reading more of this and lots of other comics as well. :)

Like always, it leaves me wanting more. It'll probably be another six full months before I get to read the next installment.
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/51n3-jLzO0L._AA240_.jpg
This is high on my to-read-next list!!!
I'd never even heard of The War That Time Forgot until this reprint collection came along.
I've read reviews that the stories become tiresome and repetitive, but c'mon just look at the subject matter - American soldiers on a strange island battling dinosaurs and over-sized crustaceans!
I'm hoping this is as 100% pure fun to read as it appears.
Very excited to get this!

Adam Strange! I never had a chance to read this as a boy.

The interior artwork looks to be mostly by the great Carmine Infantino.
I'm anxous to read this.

One of my favorite DC characters... The Flash! Again, great Infantino artwork makes this a must-have in my collection.

I know I'm not the most popular person on this board, BUT I LOVE COMICS!!!!
The main reason I can never go to Gen-Con is because it's one week after the Chicago Wizard World, where I blow at least $300 every year.
I am glad to see that Blade of the Immortal is up to Vol 17, I have been waiting to pick up the last 4 books, because I burn through those trades so fast, and only want more!
This summer it's all bout X-men Endangered Species, and World War Hulk.
Planet Hulk was awesome enough, I can't wait to see what will happen to the MU after this.
As far as endangered species goes, I think it is a backlash from the loss of 90% of the mutants, I have yet to see, I'm waiting until the first 10 parts are out so I can read them in one sitting.
I'd throw some cool art up here, but I don't know how!
Until they make "Spider-Man: The Space Oddessy", MAKE MINE MARVEL!

A very good series. I push this on anyone who'll listen.
It's difficult to get new people interested as there are now seventeen volumes and to pick up any one book would leave a person considerably confused.
The artwork is so very gorgeous.

I've had a chance to read some stories from TWTTF. They're exactly like I thought they would be - army men battling dinosaurs and other large creatures on a deserted island. I would have been crazy for this title as a child. As the stories progress, the main character is paired with a robot soldier. He looks like the prototype for G.I. Robot and perhaps even the inspiration for Britain's Rogue Trooper. It's a decent collection, but very repetitive in story subject matter.
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/51CuSwseLgL._AA240_.jpg
:passout:
THIS is a very good collection. I've never had a chance to read Adam Strange before. I'm pleased with the artwork and high sci-fi adventure stories.
Strange's custome reminds me of the early Buck Rogers newspaper dailies. The artwork looks very influenced by Alex Raymond and some Wally Wood. Very good stuff between these covers. I have not reached the Carmine Infatino stories yet, but I have flipped through the back section. His artwork is very suitable for he subjec matter. Can't wait to read another Strange tale!
Both books harken back to a more fun-filled adventure comic era.
I think I've had my fill of the realistic, gritty-style comics influenced so much by Frank Miller's work.
It's fun to read these tales of comic innocence.

I'm not all that much of a horror fan or gorehound, but I'm a fiend for the pre-code horror comics stuff - love the era, the artwork, the coloring! Yes, the primitive coloring process is glorious. For instance,

Foul Play!: The Art and Artists of the Notorious 1950s E.C. Comics!
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51ZE65ZA6TL._AA240_.jpg
Ii'm so looking forward to a weekend of minimal acitivities and late-night readings of this book. It briefly details how Gaines's father was the originator of the American comic book. And how he died suddenly in a boating accident/drowning, his son reluctantly took over the E.C. Comics line, converted it to horror and sci-fi and made a success story of the company.
Then the book goes into detail of each the E.C. artists with samples of their work and a full-color reprint of one of their best stories.
The book is just awesome in its information of the comic company and its dedicated stable of artists.
You get it all: Jack Davis, Al Feldstein, Wally Wood, Graham 'ghastly Ingels, Kurtzman, Johnny Craig, Krigstein, Marie Severin, Joe Orlando, Geo. Evans (Aces High!), Bill Elder(!), Reed Crandall, Al Williamson, and Jack Kamen.
I'm loving it and can't wait to get to the mountains to continue the reading and viewing pleasure.
If you have any slight interest in the pre-code horror comics of the 50's , grab this book! It's dirt cheap on Amazon!!!!

I'm about halfway through the glorious Foul Play!.
I'm amazed how well Gaines treated his artists - ready to help an artist whenever possible with job security and a steady income.
Then the book goes into detail of each the E.C. artists with samples of their work and a full-color reprint of one of their best stories.
Very revealing in this aspect about Johnny Craig's work. He was incredibly slow and mostly unsatisfied with his work.
I knew Wally Wood later committed suicide due to his detiorating health, but I was unaware the decline of his well-being was a result of being a workaholic smoker and drinker.
And Graham 'Ghastly' Ingels life - wow. He was the E.C. poster child for substance abuse (alcohol).
He eventually disappeared from his normal life trying to squash his problems and deny the ghastly work he did for E.C.
I'm up to George Evans's chapter. I'm anxious to delve into the background of this fine, airplane artist.
All in all, a great book with excellent, reprinted stories of each artists' work.

Wow. I feel so COMPLETELY the opposite of this. I think that old comics often had better writing and more creative story lines, but I don't think art has ever been better than it is in recent years....comics now give artists the freedom to rearrange panels and pages, and new printing techniques make everything crisper and more colorful. I've been reading a bunch of old comics lately and while I love the stories I often get a sense of claustrophobia fom all the tight panels and squint-to-see-em tiny boxed-in drawings....not to mention the terrible colors and all around crude, simple look so many characters had in comparison to the more detailed, distinct looks of today's characters. Many of those early Marvel and DC books look like Sunday-funnies art in the style of Dick Tracy of Mary Worth to me....not bad of course, but not something I'd consider fun to look at. It gets the job done in a workman-like fashion.
Can you honestly look at a book by Alex Ross, for example, and say that old school art was better? Art of course is subjective, but I feel like there's no comparison....the new art just blows the old stuff away.

Ninth! I was going to PM you and tell you the news concerning the DVD discontinuation. But I got caught up haunting around the forums and forgot.
The link I provided mentions that online archiving approach from Marvel IS the reason the additional DVDs will not be produced:
...which is to place them online at marvel.com for a monthly fee of $9.99 and annual fee of $59.88 respectively. This service with not allow you the end user to physically own these publications; they are only readable from their website and not downloadable. Which means you are now only renting these publications, and when you choose to unsubscribe to this service, you will no longer have any access or own any of these great publications.

Most of the newer artist rely on slick tricks and photoshoped enhancements to achieve that which is not necessary. They ignore the main thing are meaning to be achieving that is telling a story. If you go look at a Nexus book drawn by Steve Rude, you will see a current artist who understands story telling, in a minimalist way with crisp line work. Also someone like Mike Mignola and his Hellboy's highly styled artwork follows the story first. Many of the new artists are all flash and no substance. If you want to see the best find any book by Wil Eisner, Carl Barks, Neal Adams, Hal Foster, Harvey Kurtzman, Wally Wood, Bernard Krigstein or Lou Fine. These are best poor four colour possess separation or not.

Looking at the early MAD issues, all I gotta say is WOW. These comic artists - along with Jack Davis, Bill Elder, and Severin - will never be outdone for talent or finesse.
I've only ever seen these early MAD stories in little b&w reprint paperbacks. On these DVDs, with high-quality scans, their artwork is much more appreciated. These artists could do horror, suspsense, sci-fi - heck, an genre, but when it comes to humor? I'm blown away how versatile they were.
My hat goes off to Wally Wood, who I believe has more life in his humor stuff than his other work. Wood's detail is still there, the women characters are, gulp, bubbly-gorgeous, and the expressions and body language of the characters are hilarious.

HEH the one name on that list you may not familiar with is Bernard Krigstein. He wasn't in comic for long (went on to be a well known illustrator), but if he had stayed his name would be held in the same regard as Eisner, Kirby (who I think is way over rated) and Adams. I would highly recommend you seek out some of this work. I say some because no 2 jobs are the same. He tailored his artwork to suit each story, doing allot of experimenting along the way. Kind of like Spieglemans 70's magazine RAW.

There was an appreciation of his 'The Master Race' some years back. That was my first exposure to his work.
I remember the big book recently published, but I avoided purchasing it as it seemed everyone had become 'hip' to Krigstein.

The guys I am only recently discovering for the first time are the pre-code horror artists I'm exposed to on Horrors of It All (my WWW link below) - D ick Briefer's Frankenstein, Rudy Palais, Howard Nostrand, and others.
I'm completely enamored of Al Luster's work. Especially on the story, They Dive By Night! (http://thehorrorsofitall.blogspot.com/2007/08/they-dive-by-night_04.html)

My first exposure to The Corpse That came to Dinner was in the comic documentary, Comic Book Confidential.

I really wouldn't worry about the copyright issue. First of all, you are reviewing the work, so you've got a right under "fair use."
Plus the only way you'd be accused of any kind of violation would be if the copyright holder were to object, and why would they do that? You're helping them market their work!

If you can't start off with this volume, there are numerous Slaine collections. A lot of fans enjoyed the Horned God story arc. It featured full color painted pages by Simon Bisely. This is another great story if you can find it. Mills does the writing and bases it on many Legends of old.
The book I reviewed was my first exposure to Slaine and features my favorite of all the Slaine artists - Mike McMahon. As mentioned in the review, the edition prints his amazing work in beautiful b&w and that's a big plus for me.
Oh one more thing I wish I had mentioned in the YouTube review: the cover of Slaine battling the dinosaur? Completely unrelated to any story I've ever read of Slaine.

It's kind of sad that Marvel took that direction. For ten dollars a month, people would be better off buying a trade or a few comics. At least they would actually own something.
Maybe there's been an issue with pirating the dvd's. If so, darn you pirates!! :x
I'm now on the lookout for other complete DVD collections.
I know Heavy Metal had a set, but I can't seem to locate a copy.
It would be paradise to find sets of some of the golden age stuff: pre-code horror, jungle comics and the like.

I don't want to spoil anything for anyone who will want to pick up the trade when it comes out, but there are a few things that will have a HUGE impact on the Corps from here on out.

There are tons of crossover multi-title tie-ins with the Spidey books. If the collection only has Amazing, you're going to miss out on some stories.

This guy, Rufus Dayglo, has original artwork from McMahon's Slaine tenure!
Here's his collection:
http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryRoom.asp?Order=Date&Page=1&GSub=10079
Here are two pages Rufus owns from the story arc, 'Sky Chariots' (which is what I recommend on YouTube). The battle in the sky in full force and Slaine is taking on warriors with names like Hadric Hissing Blade, Hogni the Not-Normal, Herg the Hard, Eirik Chiselspear, etc.
Love the dialogue between Slaine and the Norse Berserkers.
I think the artwork is FANTASTIC. The lanky, overexaggerated (sp?) style fits perfectly with the tales of legend.
All Slaine stories are told through his chronicler and constant companion, Ukko, the dwarf. He is the narrator and when he reminisces, he speaks as if Slaine is now dead.
http://www.comicartfans.com/Images/Category_578/subcat_10079/MM_Prog356_Pg7.JPG
Interesting to note, the Norse Berserker on this page is named, Throrgrim Ironjaw!

I left my copy of Matthias Lehmann's* HWY. 115 at my cabin.
As soon as I get it back, I'm apt to do a YouTube review of this book.
I'm still trying to understand everything in this surreal crime comic created completely in scratchboard.
The artwork is simply amazing for the medium. I still don't know how a scratchboard artist can think in that process.
Anyway, It's a story that's been on my mind a lot lately.
If you can pick it up cheap, do so, but don't pay the $20 cover price!

He's in the Foul Play! compendium I mentioned some posts back.
Haven't come across his work in MAD though. Not sure if he even did MAD?

In a related story, I frequently think of HeroScape when watching the Justice League Unlimited series. I just this past Wednesday saw the Deadman episode that I missed on Cartoon Network. It featured monks in orange robes. Several of them were using staff weapons.
If the HS design team watched this show, and sometimes I'd swear they did, we can all hope for a new monk squad to augment/support the first and make our Woos worth even more! Heck, let's hope for it regardless!

BotI and Enemy Ace came on Tuesday!
I had a grand time soaking in the new Blade of the Immortal volume.
Finished reading it, but made sure to pace myself so the experience could be sustained.
Here are some snapshots of the gorgeous interior art - chapter pages for the Barefoot story arc
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/Comic%20scans/BotI001.jpghttp://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/Comic%20scans/BotI001a.jpg
Doa (the girl with the facial tattoo), has a large partner. He's a son of a Christian missionary.
They work as an effective fighting duo.
He's a bit like a Gladiatron or Major X17 - stopping all incoming attacks with his large frame and armor while Doa zips in and out of his legs and leaps high over his shoulders to lay down the wicked attacks.
Here Doa almost loses her head (you can see the blade cut deep into her disco 'Truth' hat), but a quick strike to her opponent (not seen until the following page) ensures her survival.
This little chick is wicked:

I really, truly wish they had done this years ago, or in the first place. Thank God the graphic novel market is taking-off, because I actually loved BotI when it first started, and slowly lost interest because of the frustration of being spoon-fed 32 pages per 30 days. I tried to let story arcs accumulate, and the last one I read was the 13 issue one. That worked fairly well, except for the small fact that I had completely forgotten what had happened a year prior. So, I continued to buy them, but I stopped reading them, and I prayed in silence for the day to come when it would end.
I was gonna read them all at that time, but I likely just won't buy the graphic novels becasue it seems ridiculous to spend $15 for something I can't read.
Sad, really.

And Soberman, I agree. It's a slog waiting for those volumes to see print!
Each time the latest release is on the horizon, I go back and reread the last 2 or 3 volumes to refresh the events and characters and motives.

First of all, this needs to be moved to the comics section, stat! ;)
Second, HeH, you're the comics authority on this forum so far as I can tell, and as a general novice in this area, I feel the need to ask you something. Just a short while ago I took a trip to Barnes & Nobles, as I had a gift card. Bought some books, and with $20 left, I went to the comics section and got myself a graphic novel - Batman: The Long Halloween. I recognized the name, and it fit perfectly into my limit, so I picked it up. So far I've just read the back of the book, and I was wondering... is it a good choice for a weird, semi-neophyte such as myself?

I haven't read that book, Johnny.
From what I've read on another comics forum, it's a very good superhero read. I've skimmed through it when I go to Borders. Tim Sale's art doesn't grab me all that much. Otherwise, I know very little of the story.
I'm sure our other comics authority, IAmBatman, could shed more light on the book!

Blade of the Immortal. All the TPB covers and a few other Google-found artwork. Made this presentation in IMovie. Simply repeated the two-seconds sound bit titled, "Ambient Hit" and overlayed those repeats with the three types of "Drone Dark Suspense" sound bytes.

I had a lot of fun utilizing all the sound bytes for The Spirit clip. Lots of ambient music ranging from jazzy music, suspenseful snippets and tidbits of water dripping, coins falling, police cars wailing past. Hope you like and it gets ya jazzed for 2009 and Frank Miller's adaptation of Will Eisner's crimefighter.

Haven't been on the site in a while, and I am glad to see BotI get some love. I started reading this a few years ago and have picked up trades since then. I'm especially glad to hear that they are speeding up the trade production rate.
This series is complete in Japan correct? I just wandered how many trades there will be total to get to the end of the series? I had been told that the last one out would be the end, but since I haven't read it, I didn't know. My guess is they confused the end of the single issues with the end of the series.
I know this is an old book, but I just recently read Earthboy Jacobus by Doug Tenapiel (sp?) and loved it. His stuff is always good, but some are better than others. I would highly recommend this series. Very fun and some very original concepts.

And yet they are now off again '-Itto Ryu' members, as the former Abandonment motives void.) We also learn in passing that the immortality project but probably not a single success.

Thanks for sharing the image, Dra(gon)!
here some spoiler what happed in the 21st book.
Kagimura Habaki has not fulfilled his contract and lose so his face and position-they must commit seppuku. But to the surprise of all, this stubborn man one months time respite get to the 'Itto - Ryu' to do.
The reader will automatically Habakis internal world. (Mangaka Noonoo tries to him a human side anzudichten.) How has this man also determined their own small Meuchelmördergruppe raised, which he now all-Itto Ryu members on the neck will vilified - the Rokki Dan '. Among located his illegitimate daughter Ryo, which we have seen in previous volumes were. Two more new female sword arm women come into action, which is probably a kind of substitute for the previous wegbleibenden feminine protagonists. (At least you get the impression.) But even for male descendants thrust was provided.
So, we see dear old familiar faces again (Mackie, Sori, Koji Kashin, Abayama Magatsu, Baro, the dead monk Boa, etc.), as well as unpleasant (Shira & Renzo). Regarding the sick psychopaths Shira, the reader should remember why the government sacked him, four of contract killings special '-Itto Ryu' members (including Magatsu), in order precisely to be made. The fifth man, which he also-as a bonus should perform, Manji.
From Doa & Isaku, one must adopt provisionally. It may be questionable, to see this again, because the more the two non-Itto Ryu. (But what does this have to say since Magatsu actually also include Bd.5 & 11 mentioned his exit; Mackie just as it once did. And yet they are now off again '-Itto Ryu' members, as the former Abandonment motives void.) We also learn in passing that the immortality project but probably not a single success.
While the senior men of the Shogun Tokugawa Ienari (Habaki & Hanabusa) has exchanged tries Anotsu of more detours on the other plans of the Government & Habakis out. It seems his lucky-to-his dwindling supporters is still a considerable number of admirers too. So he goes to an alleged''ceasefire''with the government, which Anotsu's plans can not imagine. But privately, Anotsu concerns. Mackie is the fatal hit tuberculosis, which also have their parents brought into the grave. So he tried everything to prolong their life / save. He denied the inevitable tragedy. (This is also questionable whether he was only half of the plan at the invitation Hanabusa's the sword has stuck; because & Mackie was to fight.)
Rin plagued against future fears and sorrows of love. Because they know now again: Anotsu Kagehisa will occur again in action, and consequently the fate of many people. "

Been reading Showcase Presents Haunted Tank volume 2.
It's so gosh-darned good!
A great tome to pick up for a few minutes and get in a story of WWI action and drama.
The artwork by Russ Heath is jaw-dropping amazing. A lot of his stuff looks like Michael Golden coud've done it.
My favorite title in the phonebook Showcase Presents line.
Really excellent!
But there is a printing problem. Pages 107 and 152 are the same page.
Page 152 should be something else. :(

December 17, so I won't have long to wait for this gem. That's next week!
Blade of the Immortal volume 20: Demon Lair is scheduled for release!
Volume 19, which came out in the summer, was much too short in length, but Demon Lair is a whopper!
Product Description
A massive, 280-page volume brings readers back into the "Badger Hole" with Rin and Doa, as they make some shocking discoveries and finally find their missing companions! When Rin bumps into Toraemon, the unfortunate assistant to crazy Doc Burando and witness to his disgusting "immortality experiments," it seems that breaking Manji free will be a breeze. Not so. Getting Manji out of Edo's nightmarish underground cells and dank tunnel systems will be just as arduous as the ordeal of locating him was!
IMO, besides the Acme Novelty Library, BotI is the only modern comic that really matters.
Sure it's a full-throttle, elegant butcher-fest, but nothing in comics artwork can match Samura's talent. Nothing.

I think I am still one trade behind on BotI, but I do love the artwork. The statement about this and Acme being the only relevant comics out there may be a little strong.
On a side note, I am excited for the return of Tales from the Beanworld by Larry Marder next week. Unfortunately, I have the four trades, but not the 5 issues never put in trade. Still can't wait for something new with this series that is still completely unlike any other comic. Love the complexity hidden in the simplicity of the setting and the clean artwork.

You're correct - it's very strong! ;)
I will admit, I don't see much other comics nowadays, so my opinion could be a bit biased to those two titles. Have any others that excel so well in artwork and story. Not much for the superhero stuff anymore.
I am anxious to get that Louis Riel book by Chester Brown.

I remember reading Bean World in high school. My buddy and I enjoyed it for the artwork. Not really my thing nowadays, but it was enjoyable at the time

Anyone interested in seeing me narrate a comic?
It's a Tony Salmons one-shot story from Dark Horse Presents.
Always been one of my favorites for its premise and message.
If it sounds like I'm whispering, it's because I was speaking low while recording. It was late at night and everyone else had gone to bed.

Watch it in high quality! and leave me a comment!
* I've also done several slideshow sequences for Blade of the Immortal characters. I won't actively promote them here as they're pretty violent and explicit in language.

Got home last night and promptly sat down to read Volume 20 of BotI.
Another good issue, but not big enough of a fix for the half year wait!
:(
The volume ends right in the middle of a what's shaping up to be an unusual, multi-character, three-way battle scene.
I try to offer up images to share on Amazon. Here are a few I snapped off and provided:
Rin and Doa discovering and eventually wading through and battling a zombie-like army of insane, immortal experiment patients.

Gunpowder and fire are figured in critical action sequences.
Rin, who's always practiced her special attack of hurling dozens of daggers at a target, now uses them to ignite explosions and fires:

Though as of November 2008, there was a hardcover ToD omnibus released. This is in color and pricey:

20th boys cone to the usa now :D one of the best series of the last year have released in english. the series ist like lost but it was older it had fb,ff and wtf moments.
here the story
Failed rock musician Kenji's memories of his past come rushing back when one of his childhood friends mysteriously commits suicide. Could this new death be related to the rise of a bizarre new cult that's been implicated in several other murders and disappearances? Determined to dig deeper, Kenji reunites with some of his old buddies in the hope of learning the truth behind it all.
Humanity, having faced extinction at the end of the 20th century, would not have entered the new millennium if it weren't for them. In 1969, during their youth, they created a symbol. In 1997, as the coming disaster slowly starts to unfold, that symbol returns. This is the story of a gang of boys who try to save the world.

Thought I would revive this thread, as I always enjoy it. I just finished reading Palomar, by one of the Hernandez Bros. (forget which, I think Gilbert). This is a pretty exhaustive collection of his half of Love & Rockets. I loved it. I thought the earlier part of the collection was stronger, but that by no means is to say the rest is not good also. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys slice of life stories, especially if you find other cultures interesting.
I have the other brother's collection Locas, and I hope to get a chance to read it in the coming months.
