******************Future Seattle gamedays are being handled by JanderSunstar in the thread found HERE. (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=21213)**************

Welcome to the Seattle area game day thread. We get together on the 3rd Saturday of every month at the Lake Forest Park Town Center commons. The full address and a link to the directions are below.

The next game day is August 16th (the same weekend as Gencon) and discussion of that game day starts here. (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?p=628147#post628147)

Our regular attendees include:
Bunjee (well, not anymore :( )
Elstree (well, not anymore :( )
JanderSunstar
Sexecution
David W.
Darkclown789
Jayko
Carter
Oni
CornPuff
Christy
FuzzieFuzz
Gia_Boy

Less consistent, but still having attended in the past:
Imdamoose
Adrian
Onslaught42
PhilthePhreak
Harvey
Aquaone

The windowed conference room space is inside a shopping center just off the food court area, so there are plenty of places to get food, including a grocery store next door to the shopping center (looks attached)

We usually setup about 4-5 two player maps on the smaller tables, and occasionally do a large 4+ player map on the large round table. The largest number we've had there is 20, so we have enough space for plenty. We tend to get interested passers-by asking about the game, so be ready for people stopping in to gawk!

Location: Third Place Commons meeting room
Lake Forest Park Towne Centre
17171 Bothell Way NE, Lake Forest Park, WA 98155
Directions (http://www.thirdplacebooks.com/NASApp/store/IndexJsp?s=newsletter&page=258256)

Reserved Time: 1pm to 10pm

Thought someone else in Seattle might want to snap it up:

So how are things going to work this time around? I'm new to this so I was wondering if its going to be just random maps/games or what? Has anybody tried a big map multiplayer style battle? That would be interesting.

Sorry I can't commit yet... I might have to do a payback favor for a friend that weekend. This is what happens when you use permanent marker on your bro's vinyl D&D map

Build their own thing, or print maps to build and bring. I'll have copies of all the rule books with me as well as some official map prints.

If anyone has some idea of a game they want to play, or map they want to build, speak on up!

Try clicking on the 18th in the little calendar on the right hand side, and then register for the first instance. I'll let the event module developers know something is wonky.

Bunjee
JandarSunstar
Sexecution
FuzzySadist
Kenjib

So if you are bringing others, it'll be a nice large group of people. We have some other maybes, I'm even hoping people will just show up from the general public since the event is on the calendar for Third Place Commons.

This'll be fun!

On our end, we've got the 2 of us, and Harv. I talked to Julian and he thought they had to work, but werent sure, and i was going to call them again sometime this week. I dont know about David yet, havent had an opportunity to ask him.

Bunjee

Sexecution
Harvey
Maybe 2 others
FuzzySadist
FuzzySadist's sons (2)
Kenjib
Terry (what is his forum name... Drago, right!)
friends of kenji and Terry (up to 3)

So a solid 7 people, possibly 14. cool.

I realized I hadn't posted this in the WA/OR thread, time to do that.

Well, how did it go? Wish I could have made it... Were there lots of Flagbearers? Requesting battle report, please :DOthers can give better battle reports, there was a 6 person battle going on with Kenji's graveyard map and scenario, it looked pretty fun. I was building a castle with two castle sets, I haven't had any time or space to do maps at home recently so I blew through a bunch of time doing that, talking to a kid that was asking about the game, and distributing flagbearers that I had purchased at the Bellevue TRU so that people from our group could be sure to get them. Everyone is pretty well setup now. I still have 4 each of Jandar and Utgar flagbearers.

Some photos I took, uploaded to my Gatherings gallery

Terry thinks that he might have left a jacket/sweatshirt at 3rd Place Books. It was a gray and white fleece zip up. Did anyone see it there after we left?

The graveyard scenario was a bunch of fun. We had three teams of two. Two of the teams were approaching from either side of the graveyard with the goal of capturing the holy relic buried under the statue in the middle of the graveyard and carrying it off the board on their side. The third team played an army of the unholy dead trying to keep both armies from doing just that. Each person had 300 points (so 600 points per team). The unholy dead would suffer 1 wound each time they touched the artifact, so they stayed away from it.

At the end of every round, the graveyard team could check to respawn each figure that had died at a roll of 13 or better (15 for heroes), placing them adjacent to any tombstone (rise from the grave!!!). The other teams had to use an attack with a figure to unearth the relic on a roll of 13 or better, but once unearthed the relic could be moved around the board by any character.

Here were the teams:

Jeff (came with Terry and I), fuzzysadist's son
Kozuke Samurai
orc gruts x 3
Grimnak
roman archers
krav maga agents
roman legionaires

Tim (came with Terry and I), fuzzysadist's son
Ninjas of the North Wind
Tagawa (or Kozuke, can't remember) Samurai
Knights of Weston
Roman Archers x 2
Crixus
Syvarris

kenjib, fuzzysadist defending the graveyard
Anubian Wolves x 3
Khosumet
Marro Warriors x 3
Sudema

It was pretty close at one point when a ninja of the north wind unearthed the relic and almost escaped. A couple more disappears and team 2 would have won. In the end, fuzzysadist and I won primarily due to fuzzysadist rolling +8 on the wolf attack 4 times and thereby taking down a very large number of opposing units.

He could check http://www.thirdplacecommons.org/ for contact about lost and found or just call up Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park and ask them.

I don't think it was clear in my event description, I felt that we could still play in the outer area, I'm willing to and people do that all the time, we'll just have more looky loo's. We'll probably want to minimize the total amount we bring with this in mind. Maybe only 4 master sets total plus some expansions, so if you want to bring all your stuff, that would be great by me. Are you making it for the whole day? I may have to leave early.

Well, by the time anyone sees this, it is too late, but...

Word is that coming from the North roads are obstructed and traffic is snarled, some people came from the south and it was fine but there was no terrain so no play time.

Anyway, Merry Christmas!

DarkclownI like that idea, too. And I like the idea of splitting boosters to put out on the table. I already have some extras that could be split out if people don't want to buy them off me.

We'd want to know what sort of things people would like to see on the prize table.

We were going to bring our two set package so people could see Elstree's tiles. Kenji often brings things, so maybe we should just find out what others are planning to bring. If you want to build any sort of mega map or castle, you may want to bring your collection.

Part of me really wants to draw more sucke- uh players into the game, so if we make a big showy setup, it might be nice.

I think with a tournament however, we will need to post it on the calendar at the bookstore so that we dont have too many stragglers.
If we do decide to do a tournament, it might be a good idea to get a bracket scheduled beforehand if we know enough of the players, so to keep things flowing.
I volunteer to help out with all that if need be.

We should go over the rules of the tournament beforehand, probably in this thread.
I will help run it to give other people a chance to play.

so have we decided it would be a tournament?

bunjee
February 3rd, 2007, 04:18 PM
I know I'm not up for being a gamemaster at a tournament that weekend, so if it is to be a tourney, we'd need people to take on the task. I'm starting to think that making March the tourney day would work best. I could get them to change the calendar now so that we wouldn't have un-prepared people showing up.

It may also be better for us to do tournaments at Cardhaus and leave 3rd place as normal game days. I think that if I pull some of the reservations at 3rd place, they would tack the reservations on to the end. Cardhaus has dates open in March, and we'd probably have to be out of there by about 7pm.

What do people think?

brotharon
February 4th, 2007, 12:52 PM
I certainly try not to think as often as possible, however, in this instance I agree that it is certainly a better tournament venue at Cardhaus. March is also, probably, a more logical choice for a tournament date being that it is the end of the first quarter of the year and quarterly tourneys seem to make more sense to me...hmmmm...I cannot think of anything else...I will try to be there this month...my schedule is very crazy with the new job and all...hmmmm...goodbybe...

Elstree
February 6th, 2007, 09:46 PM
I also think that Cardhaus would be a better tournament venue. It's more private and less distracting, important things I imagine when you're trying to keep a tournament on schedule.

Third-place is a good place for regular game days, but I found there to be quite a few distractions that I think would detract from tournament play. Besides playing in a fishbowl, I imagine it would be hard to keep things on schedule:

"Ok the next round starts as soon as Bob gets back with his slice of pizza."
"Well as long as we're waiting on Bob I'm going to go get a coke."
"Wait for me! I need a snack too."

...and so on.

When Bunjee and I stopped by Cardhaus last week the event coordinator was enthusiastic about us playing there again. I really like the idea of having regular game days at Third-place and quarterly tournaments at Cardhaus. If we want to do this next month, we need to let him know now. They make the schedule for each month during the first week of the preceeding month.

Ellian has volunteered to help run (or possibly run the whole tournament) to let other people play. i have this dizzy problem too, so i would hate to slow down the game play, and dont really like tournaments, so i can help out too. I would like to know if we are planning it though, to make proper preparations.

It was a little hard playing last time at 3rd place, because of the other onlookers who came by, i think that if there is an activity planned there during the day also, its going to make things tough.

It was a little hard playing last time at 3rd place, because of the other onlookers who came by, i think that if there is an activity planned there during the day also, its going to make things tough.

I've talked with Bunjee about this. What I found especially disruptive were the lil'uns. There were three kids under age ten who monopolized an entire table and map for four hours, keeping other people from playing. Since they weren't my kids I was reluctant to discipline them myself, but their parents weren't there to handle them either.

We shouldn't be a nursery service where parents leave their kids while they go shopping. In the future I would suggest that we make it clear that any child under 10 has to have a parent (or at least a high-school aged older sibling) there to play with them. Bunjee has suggested one way to enforce this is to have a sign-in list.

I'm not too worried about the older kids, in the 10+ range. The older kids that showed up were cool. They knew the rules, finished their games, and were good about sharing time on tables and maps.

JanderSunstar
February 11th, 2007, 07:15 PM
We had moments where (not the last game day) there was a kid, and he kept picking up figs off of tables, and playing with them. its nice to show new people how to play, but when the unsupervised kids start picking up pieces and interrupting game flow.
With people just playing and not having worry about a time limit or anything would be a lot better.
let us know if you would like us to set up a tournament for next month or whenever.

bunjee
February 12th, 2007, 01:40 PM
And just to make sure that people don't think we are upset about the kids being there, we aren't. We are hoping to have it be a little bit more fair and balanced. Part of the problem was that there were more people than terrain sets. In the future we'll setup a sign in, asking what people brought, and then letting them know that the play priority will go to people who rsvp'd on this site, or that brought their own terrain.

There are plenty of tables and such, it just seemed like things got a little crazy there. How were we supposed to know that 10 new people from the community of Third Place would show up?!?

As for the Tourney, I'll contact Cardhaus and Third Place and shift our March meeting to be a tournament at Cardhaus on Saturday, March 17th. I'll post when the reservation has been confirmed.

I should have set up a bunch of smaller maps. Sorry! I had a couple master sets worth of terrain left over too...

I don't think that's a problem. I liked having that one big map. After all, you had four people playing on that big map, and it was your own terrain. Even if you had broken it down into smaller maps, where would they have gone? All the tables were in use.

JanderSunstar
February 12th, 2007, 11:02 PM
the big maps are always neat to look at, i am just not so sure how balanced they are for a tournament game. If we laid out the maps better on those long tables, we could get 2-3 maps on the long tables, use the big roundtable for stuff/eating, and leave all the little ones for maps.

Did you make it out to Fantasy games yet about the space?
If we need to do a tournament, we have to get an idea of how many prizes we are doing.
It is possible to do a tournament at 3rd place, especially with the showing we had last time.

Was it just me or did the thread get all wonky?

I'm confused. In the events calendar, it says that there's a tournament the third Saturday of every month. Is this the case? If so, I might be able to make this one, and if not this one, then the next one, or the one after that, or the one after that...

So I'd like to review with people when another good day for a tournament would be. I really want to have a day where many can join us, we could switch the June date to the 23rd if that would help people, there is nothing on the 3rd place calendar for that day.

I'm really really hoping to organize a tournament and possibly advertise it. With the release of lots of HS product, I want to get people into the game. Sure, it will sell out the stores, but it will help the buyers at the stores get the power to buy more product.

What does June 23rd look like for people for a tournament?

Well, yesterday was fun, but only Elstree, Kenjib and myself made it so there wasn't much tournament talking.

I'm going to start posting the events on Craigslist, and the Heroscape Yahoo Groups. There are also a few other Seattle gaming groups I'm going to contact. If anyone has ideas of places to promote our game days, lets hear about it! If we get enough people we could possible up the number of days and make it easier for people to come if they miss one or two (like I did :( )

Here is what I put up on Craigslist yesterday, but I plan to make a much spiffier promotion posting in the future.

Woohoo! That was fun! I left early (at 7) but still got in 2 battles, one on the new official castle scenario. Don't remember who (can't associate faces with usernames yet), but two guys figured out the rest, then we played it. The inner door starts with 5 wounds, so on my first turn, Jotun comes in and smashes it down one hit. The attackers won easily, it was pretty slanted.

My next game, I've got a half hour left, so we play a 300 point game. I have Arrow Gruts x2, Krug, and the KMA. My opponent (name unsure) had Saylind, Kaemon Awa, and the KMA. My arrow gruts and Krug went down fairly fast, but not before taking Kaemon Awa and a KMA with them, as well as putting two wounds on Saylind. My KMA come up and kill Saylind, then kill the other two KMA.

In both games, I loved Krug and Arrow Gruts x2. I didn't have any of those (I borrowed them from other people) so bunjee (the one name I do remember who it's person is) sold me a Wave 2 Heroes pack for $5. Thank you bunjee!

Kenji showed up too, though I don't think you got to play with him. A couple of other people stopped by too, though I don't know their 'Scapers names.

If you've got the dough, you'll definitely want a couple of the orc packs to go with Krug. The arrow gruts also bond with Mimring, and the blade gruts bond with Grimnak. I see that both House Mouse and Hasbro Toy Shop have them for sale.

I'm really sorry to hear you won't be making it Bahde! Good luck with your August 4th tournament, I'll be in Kennewick that weekend or we'd descend upon you!

For this Saturday, I believe that Sexecution and I will be sharing Tournament Director duties.

I'm sorry I haven't gotten the maps and glyphs posted. All maps will have 2 glyphs, the glyphs will be random, and the pool will contain:
Attack +1
Defense +1
Move +2
Initiative +8
Die 20 +1 (lucky 20 sider)

Because of various time constraints, I haven't gotten creative, so for maps I'm going to go with:
Forsaken Waters (http://www.hasbro.com:80/heroscape/images/scenarios/FW1.pdf) (See master rule book or Hasbro.com)

From Battlefields of Valhalla: (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=5725)
Mole Hills
Marr Highway
Arctic Divide

2 other maps:
Highways and Dieways (http://www.heroscapers.com/download/index.php?ACT=dl&id=420&symid=426)
Forgotten Wellspring (http://home.quicknet.nl/qn/prive/gjloos/ForgottenWellspring.pdf) (with a slight shift to the red start zone plate)

I'd like to build a few others in case other people show up. I have a penchant for Searing Pass. I'm also considering Geosmores Garden Temple (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=9325&start=0)

I'm going to add this information to the first post.

Bad news and it's all my fault. For some reason I assumed that it was starting at the usual 2pm time and didn't check. Unfortunately I've got a conflict with the earlier time and can't make it. Terry probably can't come either as I didn't relay the correct time to him either. I'm really sorry about my mistake. :(

Thanks,

We had a great time today, it was very fun and we cranked out games in the perfect amount of time (not too short, not too long). I played Dragons, of course, because I love Dragons.

My team: Braxas: = 210
Charos: = 210
2X Rats = 80
Total: 500

I took third out of 6 people, 5 games played. I was 3-1 with the best differential until the last game where my mighty dragons met Krug; the dragon slayer (played by my little bro). Overall it was a great tourney and we all got prizes! It ruled. I suggest a 10$ entry fee for next time though. That way it covers a prize for each person.

Thanks for the great game,

Hey y'all, I had a blast yesterday! I played more games in six hours yesterday than I usually do in an eight hour game day. I'm wondering if we can apply some of yesterday's efficiency to our regular events.

Would having sign-up sheets for each map and scheduled time slots help, or would that impose too much structure on the more relaxed atmosphere of our regular game days. Any suggestions?

bunjee
July 3rd, 2007, 02:34 AM
I'm thinking that the regular game days could increase in pace if we take some simple steps like eating before we arrive. There tends to be a lot of talking about things before we even start setting up maps, and I like that part a lot, but we could probably setup and talk and play and talk.

I'm not sure when the next tourney will be. Not until after Gencon, I do know that. Unless someone else wants to organize one.

Yeep! Looks like a long time with no Heroscape for me.

By the way Elstree I've managed to play Hollywood Blockbuster a few times now. Once I played it with in-laws and it went over REALLY well with non-gamers. The theme is really mainstream and light-hearted and you can have a lot of fun egging people on and having fun with the whole bidding process. It also leaves a lot of space open for general social interaction so it's really stellar in this environment.

I also played it a couple of times with my board gaming buddies and they liked it a lot too. Nobody has really nailed down the economics of it yet (the fact that your contracts are all worth a point at the end might be a good starting benchmark, though I'm still not sure how relevant it is toward the beginning of the game) and I know I'm still overpaying for stuff from time to time but at least now I'm starting to be able to identify when I do afterward. There is also a certain power to having a large stash that goes beyond just what you can purchase as a meta-game thing. I know we all tended to keep an eye on whoever hadn't bought anything in a while so we knew who might be able to bid us up higher on various lots and who wouldn't.

The game is a lot of fun. Personally I would very much prefer the original German pieces from the golden age of Hollywood, but I really want the game in English and I think the English one with modern actors is probably more accessible/enjoyable to most other people anyway.

Three of us will be there tomorrow! Got to bail at 5:15ish though. Me and Jake have tested out Wave 7 (got it a day or two ago), but Carter hasn't. I'm excited to use multiples of the spearmen and see if they are worth playing (assuming I can borrow some, I'm sure that's no big deal, if someone wants to borrow our knights or Spearmen/Riflemen then that's okay with us).

Look! I am posting!!!

I think we will be able to make it to the gameday on the 18th. We wont be at Gen Con, and as far as I know that weekend is free.

As for the terrain, we can bring what we have, and we can set up some of the new hasbro maps, or just make a really big one and have a huge battle.

As for changing the dates, the group rents the room at 3rd plaec books, for the third saturday of each month. Bunjee would have to let you know about changing the date and times. [/quote]

Hello all!
November 17th (our November game day) is also at the same time as the Emerald City Gamefest.

I see this as a great time to bring new players into the game. We'll still have our room, but I'm thinking it could be a lot of fun to build some huge showy map and still have a few normal maps setup for people to play on. A few posters from Gencon that show all the stuff available will be on hand also.

I'm going to be brainstorming and working with virtualscape to come up with some ideas. If anyone has something they've seen on the boards or that they've come up with, post a link in here. I'll be looking around some of the show off threads. (Caravaggio, etc)

Ellian enjoys building flashy things, but not preconstructing (cramps the imagination) But I am sure he would be willing to build something.

I was thinking about a sign or something, I can volunteer my time to make a foamboard sign with our new logo on it (minus the date of course).

I would be nice to have a little standee so we dont have to keep telling people about the game.

Once I have a better idea of how things are going to go, I'm thinking about setting up some of the small maps like the ones we used in the tournament, and a large showcase map.

The maps I'm thinking of are:

Arctic Divide by UranusPChicago - BoV map (http://www.heroscapers.com/download/index.php?dlid=161)
Broken Skyline by LongHeroscaper - BoV map (http://www.heroscapers.com/download/index.php?dlid=894)
Embattled Fen by GameBear (http://www.heroscapers.com/download/index.php?dlid=872)
Highways and Dieways by UranusPChicago - BoV map (http://www.heroscapers.com/download/index.php?dlid=726)
HopScorch by Elstree (http://www.heroscapers.com/download/?dlid=917)
One map that uses just the Rise of the Valkyrie Master Set, but something that can do 3 or more players and looks kind of interesting.

Again, I'll be verifying our space setup this weekend and will provide more information then.

Ok, I met with the Gamefest committee last weekend to get things ironed out. This week was crazy so I hadn't posted an update, doh!

We will have one table in the outer area that can accommodate 2 maps where I will be handling GM duties doing an Intro to Heroscape. I'll bring pre-made 500 point armies for people to use on the Bloodred River Battlefield (http://www.hasbro.com/games/kid-games/heroscape/Scenarios/Bloodred_River_Master.pdf) and then have Migol's Tomb and the Mimring's Fortress Scenario.

In our normal glass room space we'll have two of the smallish tables, and the rectangular laminate top table for our normal gaming group that doesn't have to "share" with the Gamefest folks. We are also using the big round table where I would like to have a really nice looking map built that uses all the types of the terrain. They will be setting up one of the folding tables in there for games, and the bookcase/hutch and back corner are going to be used for their storage and prize displays.

I'll post more shortly.

edit: Oh, right! I would really like it if people would be up for having Marvel on one of the small tables and Swarm of the Marro on the other small table so people can see those sets in action with our experienced players.

I have a minivan so if you want me to bring my stuff it's no problem.

It looks like I won't be able to make it after all. My date to move down to Los Angeles has now moved up to the 23rd so I'm spending my last weekend here with the kids. I should be able to stop in on my way to and from various places to say goodbye and to pick up the Housemouse loot though, if you are able to bring it, bunjee.

Thanks,

-Kenji

I can definitely come, but I'll have to leave at 4:30-ish to go to my soccer party.

Actually, I'll need to know if you still want the packs that you did order before. Since I don't have enough for free shipping without the wave 8 and 8.5 stuff, the order is on hold.

I'm all the way down in Eugene, OR but there's a chance I might be in the Seattle area that weekend. It would be great to get some inter-state 'scaping going on; is there any info I'd need besides what's on the first page?

I will note that at least one person didn't find the "conference room" we are in when the came to check us out. It is a glass fronted room that is next door to Kitto Japanese cuisine in the food court area.
