TOURNAMENT FORMAT

FORMAT OVERVIEW: This year we will be trying a new tournament format called “Reinforcements.” Each player will build their own army but that army will be divided into two categories: (1) Core Army and (2) Reinforcements.

The goals of this format are many, but the key angles are (a) diversity in the units that are played in a tournament setting, (b) creative selection of Reinforcements from map to map, and (c) for those of that don’t want to play the same army all day – here’s a new option.

CORE ARMY:
The Core Army will be played in every match of the tournament, and must range from 240 to 350 points. For building their Core Army, players may select units from any official Heroscape set (except for Marvel) or official promotion (including Samuel Brown). Once the Core Army is chosen and registered it cannot be altered during the tournament

REINFORCEMENTS:
The second category, Reinforcements, is a pool of units that the player will use to supplement his Army. These units will come from the approved list of Reinforcements below. Units chosen for this list are from Power Rankings B and lower, along with other units that are often considered ‘filler’ for any army. The total number of points for the pool of Reinforcements equals 800 minus the Core Army total.

Example: If a player has a 350-point Core Army, then they can have a total of 450-points in Reinforcements. Of those 450-points, only 150-points can be select for the match.

Before each match, players will chose units from their Reinforcement list to add to their Core Army to create an army of up to 500-points. With this option, players can effectively play a different army in each round of the tournament or adjust their army to match the terrain.

If a player wants to have multiples of a unit (like a Common Hero, Common Squad or Uncommon Heroes), those multiple units count against their Reinforcement total.

For example, if I want to have two squads of Micro Corp Agents as Reinforcements, that is 200-points towards my total number. I don’t have to use both squads, but I can only pull from two squads as Reinforcements for my matches.

SELECTING ARMIES:
After each player is assigned to a map and an opponent, the two players will reveal their Core Army. Players may also ask to see their opponent’s tournament record sheet which will show their list of potential Reinforcements. Once each player knows their opponent’s Core Army, they will secretly decide on their Reinforcements and record those on their tournament record sheet. After both have recorded their choices, they will reveal their Reinforcements and set up for the match.

--
COMMENTS ON ‘REINFORCEMENT’ FORMAT:
Is the format too complex?

The answer – that’s up to you.

The nice feature of this format is that you can make it as complex as you want to. Players can tinker with their army until their heart is content, but if you want to bring just one army and make sure you have 150 points of lower graded characters – you are good to go.

While players *can* alternate which units are used for their Reinforcements each match, this is not required. You are welcome to use the same 500-point Army throughout the event as long as at least 150-points comes from the Reinforcement list.

For beginning players, I would recommend a strong Core Army with a short list of Reinforcements in case they want some variety. For intermediate to advanced players, you have the option for some creative freedom in army construction between rounds, and choices after you see what map you are playing on.

Please feel free to PM or post questions here.

I'm in, plus a friend. Will also be inviting the rest of the guys I play with (though we haven't played in months). Some of them have only played a few times but obfuscatedhippo mentioned last year there was a beginners bracket, so it should all be good. I'll either update here or let obfuscatedhippo know when I hear back from my other buddies.

Hey! I played with you guys for some time back when we were playing up north, but the drive was such a schlep that it stopped being feasible. Card Kingdom is much closer to me, and I'd love to come play 'Scape again. I can't confirm for sure, but I'm definitely thinking about it. I might also bring a friend or two.

EDIT: Actually, put me down for myself and one guest, as of now.

Hey Seattle players! We have opened the invitation for our local NHSD to the Portland/Vancouver WA folks .. and they are going to move their NHSD event to a special event in November so that we can attend.

Here's some info:

--
NORTHWEST CHAMPIONSHIP: We have joined forces with the Portland/Vancouver group in the effort to bring our corner of the world closer together (and to provide more opportunities to Scape). The NHSD for Portland/Vancouver is on November 5. Follow this link for more information: Portland/Vancouver NHSD. The top three finishers in combined rankings for the two tournaments get an extra "valuable" prize furnished by the tournament organizers (more information on prizes to follow and 1st place gets a trophy!).

So, start planning.

http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=37663

Contact Longy418 for possible carpooling north to Seattle .

Contact Nomad for possible carpooling south to Vancouver/Portland. The more the merrier!

obfuscatedhippo
September 20th, 2011, 04:44 PM
Hi there,

The basic format will be a five-round tournament, with maps representing the main terrain types (dungeon, jungle, lava, road, tundra).

Army size will be 500-points, using official figures only (no Marvel).

Nomad and I are still working on the tournament format. We have been brainstorming on ways to incorporate some of the lesser-played units .. and hope to reveal more specifics soon.

Thanks,
*Kai

With our fellow Scapers coming up from Portland and Vancouver, WA we are almost at 20 players! and we haven't heard from too many of the regular Seattle Scapers .. so please spread the word and RSVP as we may need more map : )

Rychean has already pinged me for my address for official Prize Support, and I will be pulling some hard-to-find items from my treasure-horde of Scape as well.

Nomad and I have been play-testing maps, so we will have a decision on those soon .. and I will be posting the tournament format by the end of the week.

Thank you!!

Here is a sample army using the 'Reinforcements' format.

I started with a Core army around 350-points, and then looked at what I could add for another 150-points from the list of approved figures (Power Ranking B or less). I built three armies of 500-points, all featuring the Core army base. After I had those three armies - they became my full list of reinforcements.

CORE ARMY
Nilfheim ……… 185
Raelin RotV … 80
Deathreavers x2 .. 80
Core Total: 345

REINFORCEMENT LIST
Dzu-Teh – Yetis ……….. 150
Deep Wyrm Drow x2 .. 140
Iron Golem ………………. 100
Isamu ……………………….. 10
Drow Chainfighter x2 .. 50
Reinforcement Total: 450

Possible Army builds (Core + Reinforcements):
# 1
Nilfheim ……… 185
Raelin RotV … 80
Deathreavers x2 .. 80
Dzu-Teh – Yetis ……….. 150
Total: 495

*This army is following the ice-theme of Nilf, and when I get on a snow/ice board, the Dzu-Teh should be helpful.

# 2
Nilfheim ……… 185
Raelin RotV … 80
Deathreavers x2 .. 80
Isamu ……………………….. 10
Deep Wyrm Drow x2 .. 140
Total: 495

* This build is for a dungeon board, but also the Deepwyrm Drow are good hero-killers - so if my opponent's Core Army is hero-heavy, this might be the set of Reinforcements I deploy.

# 3
Nilfheim ……… 185
Raelin RotV … 80
Deathreavers x2 .. 80
Iron Golem ………………. 100
Drow Chainfighter x2 .. 50

Total: 495

* This build might works on a lava map, either with the Golem ignoring it, or the Chain-fighters pulling opponents on lava-fields or maybe molten lava.

This is a very thought provoking format. Here is my first stab at a potential army . . .

Zombies and Friends

Core (300 points)
300 - Zombies of Morindan x5

Reinforcements (500 points)
110 – Brunak
90 – Feral Troll
90 – Warden 816
70 – Zettian Guards
50 – Iskra Esenwein
50 – Rechets of Bogdan
30 – Eldgrim
10 – Isamu

Potential Army Builds
1: Zombies, Brunak, Troll or Warden (500 pts, 18/19 start zone)
2: Zombies, Iskra, Rechets, Isamu, Troll or Warden (500, 21/22)
3: Zombies, Troll or Warden, Zettians, Eldgrim, Isamu (500, 20/21)
4: Zombies, Iskra, Rechets, Eldgrim, Zettians (500, 21)

This will be fun . . . only a couple of weeks!

Well I'm a little out of the jurisdiction, but I'd like to register for this. I'd be one of the 4 possibles that Longy mentioned. With my admittance I'm very sure that master of disaster and wingman will also be attending.

I really like this format(a different twist) and will have to start giving it thought. In my initial thoughts there are 2 of the top army builds that aren't heavily affected by the format.

Time will tell and we'll see what happens, look forward to meeting new scapers and having a fun day :p!

Yes, Roadrage, there are still quality army builds possible with this structure . . . but with options for counter units and terrain variations, perhaps we will be surprised with the winning army. Templar? Groks? Deathwalker? Drow? Obsidian? Yetis? . . .

Maybe not, but it is fun to think about it.

Glyphs!

For glyphs that are 'random' on a board, we will have bag to draw from that includes both Power Glyphs and Treasure Glyphs. Below is the list of the glyphs that we are using.

We will be doubling up on Gerda (Defense +1) and the Healing Potion treasure.

--
Power Glyphs:

1. Astrid (Attack +1): For each figure you control, roll one extra attack die. (RotV)
2. Crevcor (Common Attack +1): All common figures in your Army may add one extra attack die when attacking normally. (SotM)
3. Dagmar (Initiative + 8 ) : When you roll for initiative, add 8 to your die roll. (RotV)
4. Gerda (Defense + 1 ) : For each figure you control, roll one extra defense die. (RotV)
5. Lodin (Lucky 20-Sider): Any time you roll the 20-sided die while standing on the Glyph of Lodin, you may add one to your die roll. (Wave 1)
6. Rannveig (Wind): All Figures with the Flying special power lose this power and cannot fly while standing on the Glyph of Rannveig. (Wave 1)
7. Ulaniva (Unique Attack +1): All Unique figures in your Army may add one extra attack die when attacking normally. (SotM)
8. Oreld (Intercept Order): When one of your figures stops here, roll the 20-sided die. If you roll a 1-9, nothing happens. If you roll a 10-20, you may remove one random Order Marker from an opponent’s Army Card. (SotM) (Temporary)
9. Proftaka (Pit Trap): Your figure is trapped. The trapped figure cannot move from this space. The figure can move off the Glyph of Proftaka only if a friendly figure occupies an adjacent space. (SotM)

Treasure Glyphs:

1. Brooch of Shielding (Disengage): This figure is never attacked when leaving an engagement. (Wave 12)
2. Giant Hunter Stone (+1 VS large or huge): This figure rolls an additional die when attacking or defending against large or huge figures. (Wave 13)
3. Heroic Rune (Attack +1): This figure adds 1 additional attack die when making a normal attack. (BftU)
4. Talisman of Defense (Defense +1): This figure adds 1 additional defense die when defending. (BftU)
5. Bracers of Teleportation (Teleportation): This figure may use these bracers before moving. Instead of moving normally, you may place this figure on any same-level space(s) within 10 spaces of its current location. If this figure is engaged when it starts to teleport, it will not take any leaving engagement attacks. (Temporary)
6. Cloak of Invisibility (Invisibility): This figure may use this cloak at any point during its turn. This figure has no visible Hit Zones until the end of the current round or until it attacks with a normal or special attack, whichever comes first. This figure will never take any leaving engagement attacks while invisible. (Wave 12) (Temporary)
7. Potion of Healing (Heal 3 wounds): This figure may drink this potion after revealing an order marker on its Army Card. Remove up to 3 wound markers from that figure's Army Card. (BftU) (Temporary)
8. Scarab of Invulnerability (Ignore Wounds): This figure may use this scarab whenever it receives one or more wounds. Roll the 20-sided die. If you roll a 1-15, ignore one of the wounds just received. If you roll a 16 or higher, ignore all wounds just received. (Wave 13) (Temporary)

I have added a PDF file with the event format and a list of Reinforcement units here:

This is a draft, so we may make some small changes before the event.

For TREASURE Glyphs, we are using this system for Traps.

When a Hero attempts to pick up an unrevealed treasure, they must roll the twenty-sided die as normal. Under standard rules, a roll of 6+ allows the Hero to avoid any trap and pick up the treasure. On a roll of 1-5, the Hero activates a trap and does not get the treasure.

For Seattle's NHSD, we will use the following system - which we have playtested for the last year.

Follow the normal rules for attempting to pick up the treasure. On a 6+ the Hero avoids the trap and picks up the treasure. On a roll of 1-5, the player will consult the Trap List below to see what happens. For a roll of 4-5, the Hero has indeed hit a trap, but they can still pick up the treasure. On a roll of 1-3, the hit the trap and do not get the treasure.

For example, Sgt. Drake ends his movement on a Treasure glyph. He rolls the twenty-sided die and gets a 5 (hitting the trap). Sgt. Drake is affected by a "Blinding Flash" trap but is still allowed to pick up the treasure.

ROLL D20 TO OVERCOME THE TRAP:

Die Roll Result
1 -- Trapped, cannot retrieve Treasure – Poison Darts
2 -- Trapped, cannot retrieve Treasure – Fire Blast
3 -- Trapped, cannot retrieve Treasure – Back to the Beginning
4 -- Trap Triggered, pick up Treasure – Alarm Bell
5 -- Trap Triggered, pick up Treasure – Blinding Flash
6+ .. Safe, pick up Treasure

Poison Darts
When triggered, this trap fires three poisoned darts as a normal attack. The attack targets the Hero that triggered the trap and up to two figures that were adjacent to the Hero. If there are more than two figures your opponent choses which figures to attack. Roll three attack dice once for all affected figures. Targets roll defense as normal, without any modifiers for height advantage.

Fire Blast
When triggered, this trap unleashes a jet of flame that engulfs the Hero. The affected figure immediately suffers one unblockable wound.

Back to the Beginning
When triggered, this trap teleports the Hero back to their Start Zone. Your opponent choses one empty space in your original Start Zone and immediately places the figure there. Before teleporting, the Hero will take any leaving engagement strikes.

Alarm Bell
When triggered, this trap sounds an alert and can draw the attention of your opponent. The Hero may still pick up the treasure, but if they do - they must then roll 4 defense dice. For each Shield rolled, one of your opponent’s figures may move up to 2 spaces, provided that they move in the shortest path towards the Hero that triggered this trap.

Blinding Flash
When triggered, this trap temporarily blinds the Hero. The Hero may still pick up the treasure, but any normal or special attacks this turn rolls with one less attack die.

I will be bringing 4 or 5 format eligible armies on Saturday - so if anyone wants to just show up and play, you can use one of my armies.

Only a few days to go . . . I'm looking forward to the good times.

Kai, thanks for all your work on this.

Interesting traps, I'll have to brush up on my treasure glyph rules 'cause we haven't really played with them yet.

We will have Rulebooks on-hand, but I would look over the Treasure Glyph rules in the DnD Master Set (pg 14).

It is important to note that when we pull for random glyphs on a board ~ there is a chance that it will be a Treasure glyph. Only Unique and Uncommon Heroes can pick up and use treasures.

I made slight modifications to the Lava map for NHSD.

I moved the glyphs and added a few more shadow tiles.

I had a quick question about maps. Since we are playing on all 5 of the maps are their going to be duplicates or are only 10 people playing at a time(which could drag).

I ask this because of the time period being from 1:00 - 9:00. 5 games usually takes less time than that.

Thanks~ Josh

October 14th, 2011, 11:19 PM
Good question, Josh.

We have 3 of each of the 5 maps built. 15 total maps for up to 30 players. No drag going on here, unless you beat your opponent in 5 minutes like you did me last spring . . . please tell me your not bringing Braxas and Greenscales?

Nomad
October 14th, 2011, 11:39 PM
Oh, and I should add that we have schedules worked out where everyone plays on each map once. It won't be swiss-style . . . once you draw your number you'll know your schedule for the 5 games.

Experienced players will play like, newbies and just for fun players will play like, as much as possible. The schedule should also be conducive to having Seattle and north people facing south of Seattle people, just to have the opportunity to play against someone you haven't faced before.

We expect the tournament to go from 1pm - 7pm and then we have the space until 9pm for casual play.

And we'll probably take a dinner break in there somewhere ...

WOW, what an amazing day of HEROSCAPE! Thank you everyone!

Our winners of the weekend were Joshua and Remi! Both went 5-0 on the day.

And thank you to everyone that provided prize support. We had a great donation from Cornpuff of a NIB Tundra and NIB Lava. I threw in a NIB Jungle .. so we had the very rare 'Scape expansions in the pool! We also had a variety of Wave Packs (including Wave 9 commons NIB, Knights and Swog NIB, Kilts and Commandos NIB, Special Collection 10 NIB), a RotV terrain pack, and a Summoner Wars pack.

The Magnetic Headed Hydra (created by Rocktroll) and the Trading Card army cards (created by Shieldcrusher) were a hit .. and our heading to Vancouver, WA with Longy.

And the WotC support was much appreciated!

It was great to see so many Heroscapers! We had 'Scapers from ages 10 to 40 and I think everyone had a good time. I would love some feedback on the tournament format (Reinforcements) to see if it is something we should try to refine for future events.

And a thank you to my Map transporting minions: Remi, Forgehammer and the AubrienAssassyn!

And a very special thank you to NOMAD for bringing 7 of our maps, and for recruiting the Portland/Vancouver contingent and bringing the next-generation of great 'Scapers like Huskies16 and Draco! But especially for working on the format and helping co-host the event. We couldn't have done it without you!! Thanks for making 'Scape Day a grand success!

Peace,
*Kai

I had a great time at this tournament. Meeting and playing some new scapers was a lot of fun.

I went with one 495 point army for this tournament just to keep it simple for myself. I used Zelrig, Marro Dronesx6, and Isamu. I had a lot of fun with this army and it was funny to see some of my opponent's reactions to seeing Zelrig and that many Marro Drones(18 of em'). I ended up going 4-1 for the tournament, I lost my first match (those darn Warriors of Ashra:grrrr:) but then went on to win my next four games.

I also want to thank Kai for doing this tournament and also thank everyone else that was involved in making this happen. Good times. I look forward to seeing you all on November 5th.

Remi ran:

Heirloom
Krav Maga
Phantom Knights x2
Sonlen
Otonishi

What's funny is that he built this army in about 15 minutes while we were loading the maps into the car. He didn't have time to create a list of reinforcements to swap in-and-out, and all three of my Isamu's were taken - so he went with Oto.

Thanks Kai, Nomad, and everyone else who helped. It was a great tournament- fun format, excellent venue, and awesome opponents all around!

I went 2-3...
My core army was Cyprien, Sonya, and Marro Stingers x2, with Shurrak, Wyrmlings x6, an Iron Giant, and Marcu as reinforcements.

Two crazy moments-

I won one game using only Cyprien- the Vampire defeated a Raelin-protected Hydra with one Chilling Touch attack. He then proceeded to destroy Raelin and three squads of Microcorp Agents in my opponent's start zone.

In a later game, I was on a lava map with only Marcu and Sonya left on my team. I rolled an 18, which meant Marcu betrayed me. My opponent (wisely) chose to fly him into the lava, and said I should roll a d20 to see if he survived. I said actually HE should roll it, since he was still controlling Marcu, and my opponent proceeded to roll a natural 20 to save him!

It has been a slow Summer for organized Heroscape in Seattle. With work, vacations, and the lack of new releases - we have lost some momentum. But National Heroscape Day is only a few months away, so I wanted to start building up to a big event again this year.

We lost the rhythm of the Third Saturday of the month, but if folks can make that happen I would be happy to start hosting again (or making arrangements with Card Kingdom/Cafe Mox).

If we follow that schedule we'd have:

Saturday, AUGUST 18th
Saturday, SEPTEMBER 15th
Saturday, OCTOBER 20th (National Heroscape Day/NHSD)

Let me know if these dates work for you. We can move to a Sunday if that is better for casual games.

Also, there have been some great fan-made customs in the past year. So for National Heroscape Day and future events, I am going to allow C3V customs as well as a few other customs that we've playtested. So yes - there is some new 'Scape to be had!

Please RSVP for August 18th, and feel free to forward to other 'Scapers to at least get them psyched for NHSD this year.

Peace,

*Kai
