The day is fast approaching and with the departure of Vydar, the NHSD Peoria has a new face. All discussion for this event will be located in this thread, so post or PM if interested in attending. I am also sending a PM to all previous attendees.
The Peoria tourney has a added feature this year, CASUAL PLAY. If you are not interested in playing a tournament, you can use one of the unused maps and play 500 pt armies against other casual players while tourney games are going on. Bring any army that you have always wanted to try, or any combination of 500 points that would be fun to play. These armies can include Marvel, SoV (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=33458), and C3V (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=33420) IF YOU HAVE THE MINIATURES
Hope to see as many of you there as possible.

After NHSD report.
We all arrived and began setting up. We had 9 beautiful tables to work with and we had all maps built by 11:00.

Aquilla - myheartshakes
On a personal note: I have never seen a more gracious and well behaved group of people.
Everyone received a good sportsmanship ballot. All participants voted for the most sportsmanlike opponent the encountered. The winner was Mac122 with three votes. There was a 2 way tie for second with two votes a piece. Every other vote was for a different person. Statistically, this tells me that this entire group was sportsmanlike.
JFF also told me afterward that this group was one of the best behaved groups they had ever seen.
The best compliment came from a mom who drove her kid up from St Louis (3 hours). She sat through all 8 hours of the event and was still smiling at the end because her son was having a good time.
JFF noted that we had some beautiful maps and many happy gamers in their back rooms...and they didn't have to scrub pizza out of the carpet. There were $60 worth of store gift certificates as prizes and I am sure people bought things on the way out.
We had one kid off the street want to learn to play, and there was a nice casual game there.
If you will have me, I would love to host next year...with or without prize support.

I will almost defiantly be there. Theres a slim chance something will pop up though. I might even be able to bring friends. (@Boromer.) :D You can put me on the list. I dont know what board we will bring yet, but I`ll PM you when I decide. Thanks! 2 of my brothers will come also. Will I need to bring 2 boards? We have enough terrain just wondering what we need to take.
EDIT: Also I would like an answer to boromer`s question too. :D Will SoV and CV3 be allowed?

About the boards,
We will need 1 board for every two people in attendance, so if every other person brings a board, it will work out perfectly.
Only official units are allowed. No SoV (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=33458), CuC (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=27657) and C3V (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=33420)
The event is only 1 day old and we are already half way to prize support:woot:

Just curios but what does just for fun get out of us using their building?
Just for fun gets us in the building. To get to the tables, we have to cross through their shelves, they are hoping that we impulse buy on the way to the game. The prizes are gift certificates, so they win that way. The biggest thing is while we are playing, we are smiling and having fun. Other customers will see this and, subconsciously, they will feel at ease. When their friends ask about the place, they will remember the fun and tend to be more positive in their reports. Word of mouth is very good for small businesses...a win again

:o First post here, searching for a good five player map, and I stumble across this. A tournament in my hometown! This seems like a great tourney, and I will likely be attending. Count me on the list! I'll begin making my army soon. My dad might also want to come, I really don't know. If you need some tiles, I have 5 master sets worth so I could probably build a board or two if needed.
Just an FYI, this IS the day of RHS homecoming so if there is a time conflict with that, (probably not, dances start at 7 usually) homecoming will probably come first. Just trying not to be TOO socially awkward.

Welcome! Bring all that want to come. In years' past, we're done by 5:00pm, 5:30 at the EXTREME latest. And if you're not in the final match, by 4:00 + tear down. There is usually another group that meets after us and they need to start their setup (Flames of War?)

Sorry for the double post but I have news concerning me going to the tourney. The date for the wedding has been scheduled. Its the 15th. BUT! Mom says since I was already planning on going to this event then I may be able to go instead and be dropped off at the tourney early.(HA! In your face Mac!) So if I had to choose between the wedding and the tourney which should I choose? (I`m choosing tourney if I get the choice. You all can just tell me that its the right choice so I feel better about missing the wedding.) ;) Also boromer might be able to caravan with me. So keep us on the maybe but if everything goes well I should show up with boromer and my 2 brothers. :D See you guys there! (Hopefully...)

Hello, I've got a quick question. What is your opinion on proxing in this tourney? I'm missing one of my Krav, and one of my Nakita, and just before I possibly construct a Vydar army, I'm curious if I can use a Nakita agent to take the spot of a missing Krav.

It would be up to Ryougabot, as the TD, to rule on proxies. Borrowing a figure or squad would be a good route to take. I have several extra Kravs - which one are you missing?

I'm missing the guy with his gun on his knee, slightly hunched over. It's OK though, I probably won't play a Vydar army. I don't have enough squads to make a competitive enough one. My collection of figures is far from complete. I'll probably go with either a Jandar Einar or Utgar army, depending on how the practice battles I do with my dad go.

I read in another forum where a Scaper built a map on a piece of thin plywood or foamcore board except for trees, walls, etc. He was able to transport the pre-built map and then just add the obstacles. I'm going to experiment with this to see if I can make it work. It would sure save a lot of set up time.

Our 1st year I had most of it assembled in a large flat box. Really helped in set up and for tear-down I just shoved it all in the box and sorted it out at home. Last year I just brought the pieces I needed for my map(s) and built on site. If you're familiar enough with the map you bring, it won't take long. It is also helpful if you put stickers on the starting spaces and glyph locations for ease of play during the matches.

I always bring my maps assembled on a big piece of cardboard once I arrive it need a little touch up walls, trees and top single tiles some times need to be placed in the right spots once I slide it off the cardboard to the table usually saves me if I run later then expected. I know I'm not holding up tournament start time because I'm late and still have to setup a map. ;)

We have a Walmart here that had every set through wave 9, so getting HS was not a problem. I first saw MS1 in a Farm and Fleet in Geneseo and it reminded me of Battletech and Gurps. I then saw it in TRU in a large city with the full display. I did not pick it up until later though...around wave 1. I was quickly impressed with the rules and simplicity. Once I had wave one, I started my first Synergy Chart, because I love how characters are interrelated.
It became hard to get, so I stopped hunting Walmarts and went straight to HMG.
I had no TV so I had never heard of it, the only thing that sold me on the game was shelf appeal. Exactly why they spent so much on that type of marketing...One of the things they did right.

I had seen Heroscape at a friend's house. He had bought it for his kids. While the mix of genres was interesting, I was thoroughly unimpressed when I watched them play. Whoever had Mimring won. I passed up tons of stuff on clearance at Target except for a Marvel master set. I picked it up for my young son thinking that he might enjoy the Superheroes when he was a little older. 2 years ago, we had a silent auction at our church and there was a box of Heroscape that had an RotV and an FotA. I put $10 on it and won. When I got it home, I started looking through the rules and realized my friend's kids were playing a heavily house-ruled version of the Basic game. From then on, I was hooked.

It was a heavy decision to make, but I put it in again because I really did not want to see any Major Q9, Raelin, and rats armies win again. By keeping it faction, it encourages better playing, and more fun.

It will keep the tourney more fun, which was the goal from the very begininng. Last years' was the same limitation. The year before that was no "A" rated units according to Spider Poisons' Power Rankings (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=6171&highlight=power+rankings). (my favorite so far)
Faction wars get the creative juices flowing, and throws together those synergies and themes that are lost in an all-out cutthroat tournament where Q9, Rats, 4th Mass, 10th Reg, Zelrig and the like take center stage. When else will you see a Mohican army in a tourney except one where they may be the only Aquilla representative and win their faction by default? It will bring out figures that never play with each other or otherwise see the light of day. I, too, am having trouble filling in those last 20-30 points. Personally I'm working on not just having one General (obviously) but theme them together within that general and still try to be competitive. :ponder:
And yes, I think Utgar will have the most showing due to the large figure pool you can pull from. That leaves little competition for the other 5(6) spots.

BTW, can someone bring a small portable CD player so we can play the music CD while we are playing, so everyone can hear it so they can decide if they want to pick it as a prize? I do not actually own a CD player anymore.

I personally would have liked to have seen more gift certificates to the store hosting the event. They are and have been very generous in letting us take over their game room each year. Even though they may not have Heroscape for sale (I don't know if they do or not), there are plenty of other things there to spend our GC's on. TONS of games and accessories - board games, card games, D&D, puzzles, dice, miniatures, paint and craft supplies...just because it's a HeroScape tournament doesn't necessarily mean all prizes have to be HS related.
Giving back to the host location in appreciation for their services should be given more attention IMHO.
I'm assuming the entrants' fees will be used for GC's at Just For Fun, or is that the money that has already been spent?

I used the money that I would have put toward them and bought some Heroscape specific stuff and to cover printing costs and such. I tried to go for a theme in the prize table...all Heroscape stuff...you can't buy it in stores anymore.
That is a good point. I took each confirmed guest and multiplied by 5 to create a budget. The prize money has been split to cover the costs of most of the prizes that were not donated. Right now there is $20 left that I will use to purchase gift certificates. If any of the maybes show up, or anyone else joins for 5 off the street (it has happened), that money will go toward GC. I have planned for two GC prizes, but I am expecting 5 before the day is done. Do not worry, each of us just being there will generate lots of revenue for the store.

I'm with Briaka about the GC's. Just for Fun lets us use the space for free, and the $5 is a way to thank them for letting us use the space for this event.
Also, I don't know if we will get to listen to music while we are playing because usually there are other games going on while we are playing.
BTW, has anyone had a chance to stop in and see if the size of the space is compariable to the last location?

Who of us that are attending has already selected their final army that they will use? Who has several armies picked? Who plans on taking a few with them and deciding at the last minute?
I fall into mostly the second category, maybe a little of the third.
(But that's just me and actually I feel like playing Stingers x5, Deathreavers x5 with a 35 hex start zone.)

I am posting from an airport in Tulsa, so excuse the grammar and spelling. I have all prizes but the official ones, the room is reserved and all is well. I am not planning on entering the tournament, rather I will be ready to play casual games with people off the street. I have been approached by people who would come if they did not have to play competively. (I guess rabid gamers have a bad reputation :)
As there has been some questions as to prizes and costs, I will post my budget here to keep everything transparent...to much time in industry I guess.

I have my armies narrowed down to 2 with two different generals. I still have some playtesting to do to make a final decision, but I'll probably bring both and make my decision the day of.
Also, aren't most the maps 24 hex starting zones? Seems like you'll be leaving off a lot of rats with 35 figures.

I am back.
Most of these maps are 24 hex starting zones. A kind request to all map buiders for this tourney. Please place some temporary stickers on the hexes of each start zone and the glyph locations. This will speed up setup and allow us more time to play. I have found that yard sale price stickers work well.
Also, please place stickers with identifiers on the bottom of you figures. With this many people, odds are we will have a few of the same figures.

Ryougabot, I know you are working very hard to put all of this together and we do appreciate your efforts. I just don't think that $46.25 in laminated versions of your Synergy posters & Charts are what our entry fees should go towards. If participants, sponsors, and WotC want to make donations for prizes, then I don't see a problem with that, but if we had to pay for those prizes, I know at least I would want a say in that.
If I am the only one that feels this way, then please speak up, I just think that most of our money should go back towards the FLGS that is hosting our event for us.

I don't have an issue with the posters and charts. Those make for a varied and interesting prize pool. The FLGS is getting $40 for gift certificates along with any cash the participants may spend. From the (admittedly few) FLGS owners I've talked to, they usually don't expect much upfront, but allow the use of the space knowing they'll have a good size group of gamers at their location for several hours. It gives the location some buzz and excitement which attracts other gamers. It builds goodwill with the gaming community which in turn will sow the seeds for future sales.

Looking at the front page, we only have 19 confirmed now, do we still need 14 maps? Wouldn't we only need 10-11 maps? With only 8 tables, I don't know if we will have room for many more. Some of the tables only were large enough for one map, while othes would hold two. I'll stop by tonight after work and check out the size and qty of the tables.

Yes, we only have 19 confirmed, but we have 5 maybes. If those maybes show up, that makes 24 participants. There needs to be 12 maps, plus one for any surprises, for everyone to play on. That makes 13 maps. At two maps per table plus the prize table, That makes 8 tables. Also, the more maps you have, the less likely you will play on one twice.

I would have preferred to get a vote on how the prize money is being spent. The amount of money being spent on the charts and poster do seem excessive for the amount of prize funding available.
That being said, it's not a big deal for me, I think it's just something to think about for next time. I have no problem donating $5 to whatever for a full day of playing heroscape. I also thank Ryougabot because I know that there is a lot of stress and time dedication involved with putting this kind of thing together.

Greetings,
I owe everyone an apology, so I am sorry. I jumped the gun on my inclusion of the charts and poster as prizes for this tournament. I can say that I overestimated the desirableness and underestimated the cost.
Let me take everyone on the journey that got me here and get some opinions on where to go from here.
The call went out for a host. I read up on the tourney rules, and got the insight from hosts and decided to do it. I started the thread. I booked the shop. I then went to work on prizes. I really wanted to keep the tradition of giving everyone who participated in the tourney prizes. I also loved the idea of picking the prizes in the order of your standing in the tournament. I also wanted to give prizes they could not just buy with their $5 entry fee. I also wanted a HS theme for the prizes, since this is probably the last year we can get this many HS things. I decided on $10 gift cards. I went around my house and found all manner of HS stuff. The tower, the tray, the comics, and wave 9 heroes unopened. I still did not have enough stuff so I made the CD. I still did not have enough prizes, so I thought about adding the poster of the synergy chart master because it would be a cool thing that the average person could not get. I could not print anything that large, so I approached a local print shop. They came back with a cost and a long lead time. The lead time was long, so I had to jump on it. I thought about a set of laminated charts because they look cool. I started to work on them. Morally I could not bring myself to print and laminate at work, so I had the print shop do that as well. I won the weekly drawing and donated the Ornak prize as well as my high quality Skahen repaint…since I had the real thing now. I also found a great deal on two castle sets. When all is said and done I have enough prizes for everyone with $40 for the shop. If the maybes show up and pay, I can buy two more certificates ($60 for the shop)
I am in the position of deciding what to do, and want the opinion of everyone.
1. I could keep the charts and buy two more gift certificates
2. I could drop the castles and buy one more gift certificate
3. I could drop the poster, but I will have to sell the Ornak (or more) on Ebay to make my personal budget work out for this month
4. Leave the prize table as it is.
5. Some other solution I have not thought of.
I certainly do not want to create negativity in this fun event, so I will apologize again and put it in your hands for a disposition.

Addressed in order
1. I personally have no use of the synergy charts and would rather have GC's to Just For Fun if I had to choose.
2. No. Who wouldn't want more HS castles?
3. There shouldn't be any reason to disrupt anyone's budget. God knows I can't keep one. Praise the ones who can.
4. Probably the best solution at this point.
5. There might be other solutions but I'm not going to ponder on such things.
It seems there is much ado about how the prize table was handled and how much was spent without input or direction. At this stage of the game I say (4) leave it alone and learn for next year. If I recall this issue came up before and Joel brought it before everyone attending to voice their opinion on how prizes should be handled. I think it should have happened here, but it did not, leave it alone for this year, and have a FUN tournament.
Which has always been the intention, hence the best Sportsmanship award choosing 2nd.

Dude, don't sweat it. Even though I'm sure all of us are going to be competitive, it isn't really about winning and the prizes. I'm paying just because. Honestly, if you had told me that you were pocketing the money just as a fee for setting up the tourney, I'd be fine with that. You set it up, you made the decisions necessary. If people aren't happy, they aren't obligated to play.
That being said, my army and I are waiting to be unleashed upon Peoria on Saturday.
Just before coming though, are custom dice a problem? Mine have three skulls and two shields just like official dice, just that they are larger and have Indianapolis Colts horseshoes as the shields. Will they be allowed? Canuck would be bringing his custom dice also.

I don't know who made the custom dice, but they have it all wrong. The colts should be the skulls and the bears should be the shields. ;-)
Ryougabot, for the prize table, leave it along for this year and we will do it differently next year. I really did like the purchasing of used heroscape for prizes though. Terrain and commons are always a great addition!

Even three days from the event, I am still undecided which General to field.
I will probably bring each possibility with me but need to know if someone can lend me 1 of any of the following:
Agent Skahen (I don't have the time to repaint my extra Nakita)
Black Wyrmling
White Wyrmling
Red Wyrmling
It might make my decision making easier.

I have a Skahen I will bring. I will be bringing all of my figures and cards incase anyone needs any. I think I decided on my army yesterday and plan on playing a test-and-tune game on Friday to confirm.
The Place
I checked out Just for Fun and they have WAY more space than last year. We will have our own separate room from Flames of war and Yugio (sp?). We have 8 of the rectangular banquet tables. Also, the other games that day must go through our area, so we have keep it picked up and not block traffic.
FYI, no food in the play area, and any beverages must be in a lidded container. This will make it difficult to eat lunch, as I usually brown bag it. Do you think there is anyway to schedule a 30min lunch break in the days events? Within walking distance is a Taco Bell and a Little Caesars.
Sadly, J4F has no more Heroscape in stock, they said they sold the last of it about two months ago. But, they do have some neat painted mini's that would make good customs and they always have HeroClix.

Do you think there is anyway to schedule a 30min lunch break in the days events? Within walking distance is a Taco Bell and a Little Caesars.
Ask and you shall receive. The event now goes till 6 and there is lunch break.
If we bring a lunch,Where can we eat?
If we are within walking distance of a TB, I am sure some are going there. Just go with them and borrow one of the tables.

Hey I'm going to bring at least one map, and Boromir is going to bring one also. But I have a question. If the map I want to bring has a glyph, and I hate glyphs could I remove it, and not bring the glyph? There's one map I just love but I hate glyphs, especially in tourneys. Thanks!

The way glyphs have worked in the past is that the organizer brings the glyphs and they are randomly chosen for the map at the start of each game. If your map has 1 or 2 glyphs, then it has a glyphs for the game unless both players agree to not have a glyph.

I will end up bringing my collection of figures (it all fits in one large tote and a small one) and you or anyone else are welcome to borrow any for the tourney. I have 3 squads (I think) and probably won't be using them. My son will be building his army from the same collection, so whatever is left will be available.

That is a great idea. If you are providing a map with suggested glyphs, doubletape them down.

Either way is fine with me. If a later break doesn't unduly disrupt the flow of the tournament, that would be nice. I've never been to a tourney, but it's my understanding that unless the battle takes the full 50 minutes, there would be a few extra minutes between rounds to grab a snack.

My 2 cents would be from 1-2. Gathering and set up in the 10:00 hour. We won't start playing until 11:00. Do we want to play one game then break for lunch? I suggest a big breakfast and a later lunch.
50 minute timed rounds has usually in the past been enough time. I can remember only a few games that went to time so yes, there will most likely be extra time between rounds for snacks.
And I will bring a timer that beeps at T-minus 10 and 5.

Good evening.
It is t minus 14 hours (give or take). I have everything set up and ready to go.
I thought long and hard about the lunch issue. I decided to leave it at the beginning and here is why. If someone shows up at 10, registers and sets up their map quickly, they can have a leisurely lunch and be there by 11:30 to start. If we move the lunch between games, it is rushed and not much fun. I went with a half an hour lunch because an hour lunch would get the tourney out late. As someone who has driven to Chicago at night, I think our friends from up north will appreciate the extra half hour.
Thank you Briaka for the use of the timer.
Please bring a pencil, a smile a and a calculator if you would like one. Familiarize yourselves with the rules and we can start off quick and have a good time.
See you all there.

Thanks Ryougabot for a great tournament! It appeared everyone had a great time, even those that went 0-5. And the prize table was awesome (thanks to R˙chean and generous local donators).
In a nutshell: I went 2-3 with Vydar. I had problems against Zelrig's 10th Regiment and Cyprien's stingers, but handled Aquilla's spider, wyvern, wormling assault and Ullar's viper and elf attack.
Yes, Boromir, it would be nice to play together more often for us in the area. JetJake, KevinDola, and I may try to get a play date or two together. Not necessarily a tournament, but maybe just a 'Scape day or two. We could try different scenario's in preparation for next year's tourney.

Just a comment about the tournament format.
This is the second year for Faction Wars. Two years ago, the B-list tournament. Our event has always been rooted in having a good time. Hence the entrant voted having the best sportsmanship of the day getting the second pick of the prizes, as well as their tournament standing pick.
The faction limitation really had me bouncing between 4 different general builds, most of which lacking in something. (maybe ut's just me lacking ;)) A couple of ideas I had for changing it up for next time:
Super general: Armies including 1 Marvel figure, then mixed HS.
Rainbow warriors: Armies including only one card of each faction (Aq, Ei, Ja, Ul, Ut, Vy) Valkrill to be included in Utgar, where they belong in the first place IMHO.
HERO Scape: Heroes only
Squad Scape: Squads only
Go big or go home: Include 1 (or 2) large or huge figures. Or 1 of each.
Many of the armies this year had a large or huge figure already. Braxas, Nilfheim, Zelrig, Krug, Dumutef I recall seeing yesterday. Personally my favorites would be one of the first two. As long as the point total is adequate to get finished on time. I was thinking 600 for Rainbow (avg 100 per general) but our game at home took longer than I thought. And I guess a lower point total would make for some really interesting builds.
Maybe it's too early about thinking on next year already but my mind is stuck in 'scape mode right now. What are your thoughts on these or your own ideas?
kevindola
October 16th, 2011, 11:28 PM
I've been pushing the idea of a draft tournament. Here's my initial format thought which could be tweaked or modified:
Each person brings 500-550 points of heroscape figures. Each round you combine the figures you brought and the figures your opponent brought into a 1000-1100 draft pool. (Maybe for 450-500 point builds)
Roll the d20 to see who picks first from the draft pool of army cards. whoever gets second pick also gets the third pick and then alternate from there.
I would give 15 extra minutes per match to accomplish the draft (for a total of 65 minutes matches) and reduce the day from 5 round + championship/casual play to 4 rounds + championship/casual play. (If we reduced the point total to 400-450, I'm sure we could get 5 games in comfortablly)
So as far as variety, you would play a different army each round. And there would be an extra element to the game with strategic drafting and counter drafting and I think we would see some figures that aren't normally out there. After all, will you bring Cyprien in your pool when there's a 50/50 chance that your opponent could be drafting him out of your pool? Or will you draft Stingers if there's only 1 squad of them in the draft pool?
I'm sure there's a better explanation for this type of tournament somewhere on the site, but I think that covers the gist of it.

I didn't make it into any pics, but at least Nilfheim and my dicebox did.:D
Before I get into my battles, I had a great time playing, thanks to Ryougabot for hosting, and thanks to GFF for giving us such an awesome place to play.
I deliberated long and hard on which army to bring, and finally decided upon a strong defensive army with a big powerful and hopefully speedy hero. With that in mind, I brought along Nilfheim, Eldgrim and Knights of Weston x4 (ok, I only took KoW's x3, I borrowed the last group from Mac122. Thanks again, dude.)
My plan was for Eldgrim and the Knights to go out and thin my opponents' ranks a little, then once Shorty dies, my 7 move dragon could swoop in and help polish off the rest of the enemy. Battle reports are below, if I messed up on someone's army, I apologize.
Match 1 vs. WarriorOfEberron on Arctic Divide (deep snow and slippery ice)
My opponent brought Cyprien, Krug and Stingers x3. I thought that the snow and ice would be my downfall since the bulk of my army has a move of 4. The kid brought Cyprien straight up against Nilfheim in my start zone where the dragon and a couple of height enhanced knights were able to make quick work of him. The other knights truged up and over the snow and ice to deny Krug from getting onto the same level as they were. The potent stingers whittled away at the knights, but fell to the dragon and eventually, dragon and knights polished off Krug.
Match2 vs. Boromir 96 on Fire Isles
Boromir briught Cyprien, Sonya and Stingers x5. This map was made for Cyprien and Boromir used every bit of cunning to work the vampire to his fullest. Boromir had Stinger Drain kill him 5 different times in this match. By the time his Stingers were dead, all I had lost were a pair of Knnights and Eldgrim. A speed enhanced NIlfheim jumped into the fray to work on the vampires. And then disaster struck. Cyprien jumped out, chilled the ice dragon with one casual roll of the d20 and then proceeded to feast on the blood of 14 additional knights. I think at one time, I had given the vampire 4 wounds, but he just kept coming back. He'd lfit across the board, never landing in a spot where more than 2 knights could attack him.
Match 3 vs (all I know is his last name) on Swamp Thing
My opponent brought out Tor-Kul-Na, Isamu, Stingers x3 and Nagrubs x3. My knights took to the edges of the map while his Stingers went through the middle. I tried to hide when I could, and limit the number of attacks he could make as I closed in. I had to bring in Nilfheim earlier than I wanted to or get shredded. Nilfheim stayed on the perimeter which kept him higher than Opponent's forces. I worked over some Stingers and the occasional shot at Tor-Kul-Na and the 'Grubs. Once Tor-Kul-Na got to the Knights, he trampled every one he encountered. It wasn't pretty. I was finally able to bring the Hivelord down as I split a pair of knights who had Tor-Kul-Na against the edge of the map. Tor-Kul-Na moved to trample one of them, disengaging from the other. Both disengaging dice found their mark and saved me from utter disaster.
Round 4 vs Jetjake on Ticalla Sunrise
Jetjake brought Cyprien, Marcu, Phantoms x3 and Stingers x3. I don't remember much about this game right now, except that I had discovered the wind glyph and had to keep a knight or two close by to keep Jetjake from putting a Stinger on it and keeping Nilfheim from flying all over it. I was able to avoid the chilling touch, and whittle down the Stingers. He brought Phantoms out lastly, but they weren't much use against the defensive minded knights.
Round 5 vs Infectedsloth on Marr Highway
Sloth came at me with a different build than I had seen all day: Cyprien, a Fen Hydra, Sonya, Drow Chainfighter, Marcu and Phantoms x2. I was able to jump his Hydra with Knights boosted by the movement glyph, plus a road movement glyph and take off two heads before the beast could begin attacking me. Cyprien jumped into the fray only to be hunted down by Nilfheim and the Knights, Marcu turned on his master, attacking and wounding someone (not sure who) and perishing before he could hurt my troops. In the end, I surrounded Sonya with Knights and Ice Sharded (?) her from afar with the dragon.
4-1 on the day, losing only to Boromir, who finished 2nd. I missed winning my faction by one SoS point. I had a great time playing, was happy to bring Ryougabot's synergy chart home with me. It'll go on the wall at school for my club members to use. I also brought home Ryougabot's 'Scape CD and can't wait to listen. Thanks to everyone who played, and I hope to do it again next year, maybe even dragging a son or two along.
If you will have me, I would love to host next year...with or without prize support.
I thought you did a tremendous job, thanks for making it all happen.
Oh, for everyone who asked about the dice, they were ordered from Chessex (http://www.chessex.com).

This is my brainstorm of tournament ideas from last year. If I had run the tournament in Peoria this year, I probably would have used #1. I've always wanted to do a draft tournament as I think that is the way HeroScape is best played, but the extra time required always deterred me from running one. (Note that there are three approaches listed below.)
Another idea I've been toying with is limiting the starting zone size (say to 12 hexes) to see how that affected the armies played.
I doubt I'll be running another event in the future and I didn't want these ideas to be lost, so feel free to use them if you like.
Ideas
1) No unique squads or multiples allowed.
(Only unique heroes, lone uncommon heroes, and solo common squads/heroes.)
2) Sideboard: Bring 600 points of figures, select a 450 point army after you see what your opponent has brought.
3) Draft #1: Every map has a set of figures assigned to it (e.g. RotV Master Set figures). Players draft from that pool prior to playing at that map.
4) Draft #2: Every player brings a set of figures. Before playing the game, player's figures are combined into a pool and armies are drafted for play.
5) Draft #3: Players draft from a single common pool prior to the tournament.
6) Jexik's Shake-up (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?p=903162#post903162)
More Rules
1) Limit Starting Zone to 12 Hexes

Four Cyprien armies, four armies with Stingers. Yours was the only vampire that took me out.
By the end of the day I was sure I was going to have vampire nightmares.

kevindola’s battle report
My Army
185 Zelrig
300 10th Regiment of the Foot x4
485 Point Total
We played faction wars last year and My Zelrig Einar army went 6-0 en route to winning the championship. That year I brought Z, 10th x 3, and had Crixus for gladiator support. In only one match last year was Crixus useful and then only marginally so, so I decided to burn the extra 15 points and take a 4th squad of England’s finest anti-revolutionary boys. Then see if Z and the 10th could do it again.
Round 1: vs. briaka (#???, 2-3)
Army: Nakita Agents, Krav Maga Agents, Dund, Mika Connour, Black Wyrmling x 2
Map: Burial Marsh
Glyphs: Move +2, Summoning, Move +2
First Round and I’m facing an army with NO unique squads. Zelrig was feeling a little disappointed but we must carry on. Briaka took initiative and sent out his baby Braxi out to claim some glyphs. Glyph #1 was move +2, this allowed the wyrmling’s twin brother to have enough oomph to get glyph #2 which was….another move +2. Super speedy Vydar army forthcoming. My #1 sent Zelrig out to the NE perched on height and sent a Z bomb into his base targeting Mika and 2 Kravs. My 1/3 produced no damage however. Turn #2 saw the Wyrmlings go again and claim Glyph #3 it was the summoning glyph. Used to bring forth a Nakita Agent. My 10th moved out next and fired upon the wyrmling taking one down. The nakitas responded by hitting Zelrig for a wound and killing a 10th Reg. The end of the round saw smoke powder fail, and a Nakita goes down, as does the last of the Wyrmlings.
The 10th Regiment take over from here for me. I claim one of the move glyphs and use the road to tie up some Kravs and spear them with the bayonet. Dund makes an appearance, but his crippling gaze (which would have been devastating for my all order markered up 10th Regiment) fails twice. The bayonets eventually take down Dund. I lose some more 10th but the move glyph with the road on this map proves very valuable as I am able to quickly engage Kravs, and the smoke powder only hit once. Mika gets tied up and is unable to use any fancy shadow tricks even on this shadow map. Mika takes down a few more 10th regiment and puts a few wound on Zelrig, but eventually…and I mean it takes a while, Mika succumbs to the firing squad.
Casualties: 7 10th Regiment were lost, 4 wounds on Zelrig
Round 2: vs. Jonathan (briaka’s son) (#X, Y-Z)
Army: Major Q9, Krav Maga Agents, Microcorp Agents x 2, Otanoshi
Map: Ruins of Pine Tree Marsh
Glyphs: Massive Curse, Move +2
I’m taking the tour of Marshes today as I go from Burial Marsh to the Pine Tree Marsh…or at least what’s left of it as it appears to be in ruins. Oh No! Q9. I did not have to face Q9 last year and was glad for it, but now after facing a unique heavy Vydar army. I have to do it again while squaring off against Q9.
Jonathan claims the first initiative and sends the 10 move Otanoshi over to the first glyph. Massive Curse (I hate this glyph), now we roll for the 29 figures on the board. Otanoshi herself is killed with a 1, as well as one of the Microcorp agents. I lose 1 10th regiment to the curse, but the big boys are spared. Zelrig flies out cautiously on turn 1. Q9 enters the fray in turn 2, but his Queqlix fails to find the mark on the heightened Zelrig. I contemplate ignoring Q9 to go for the microcorp in the base, but decide that the Major must be dealt with. Zelrig claims height against Q9 in the center of the map, but his 3 skull bite is blocked. Q9 manages 1 wound to the heighted Zelrig on his final turn, and Zelrig’s teeth bite again this time hitting Q9 for a wound.
Round 2 sees the 10th regiment come out as well as the Kravs and the Microcorp. Kravs claim a big move glyph which help the microcorp take height. Zelrig takes a few more wounds, but the all 10th regiment assault with height and wait then fire takes down Q9 by the end of the round.
The bayonets end the Kravs reign on the move glyph and the 10th regiment take over on the move booster. The Microcorp and Kravs continue to take down 10th here and there while pinging Zelrig. Eventually though, the move boosted 10th regiment are able to gain height or bayonet. And the microcorp are not rolling for their armor. They all fall as the 10th regiment are able to overrun the remaining agents.
This was a good match. I thought the heighten agents were going to be too much for the 10th to get to, but Zelrig still on the board was able to draw some fire away from the 10th and let them get close enough to use their bayonets. Great match.
Casualties: 6 10th Regiment were lost, 5 wounds on Zelrig
Round 3: vs. infectedsloth (#X, 3-2)
Army: Cyprien, Sonya, Fen Hydra, Phantom Knights x 2, Marcu, Drow Chainfighter
Map: Mole Hills
Glyphs: Removed with agreement from opponent
Sloth sent out his Phantom Knights first. Zelrig flew in to meet them but whiffed on his first Majestic fire, allowing the targeted Phantom to gain height and ping him for a wound. Zelrig was able to take one out (honest to goodness, this was his first kill of the tournament…don’t know how I won 2 matches with Zelrig not making a single kill), as the Hydra advanced and then the 10th.
Somewhat of a blur, the next turn saw a few more Phantoms go down and a few more wounds on Zelrig as the Phantoms pounded on him. The Hydra moved into striking distance.
Round 3 saw the Hydra finish off Zelrig with his 4 attacks, but it was costly as some heighted 10th regiment shot off 2 heads. Hydra moves in deeper and takes out a 10th but doesn’t survive another barrage. A phantom knights goes down too, leaving 2 of them.
Round 4 sees the Phantom knights take out some 10th and Cyprien move into striking range. The 10th regiments wait then fire does not manage to take down the 2 remaining phantoms despite the wait then fire. The range bonus and height is too good.
Round 5 was the clincher. I had about 12 10th remaining when Cyprien swoops in and takes down 1. The wait then fire counterattack puts 3 wounds on the vampire. He flies in deep trying to take out 2 10th but another failed CT and a failed attack leaves him at 3 wounds, and the 10th counterstrike hits him hard felling him and the 5th phantom knight.
Round 6 has the 10th finishing off the last Phantom Knight. And Marcu coming into the party. He takes down a 10th regiment reducing me to 10, but Eternal Hatred activates and I plop him in the water where 4 attacks of 4 from the 10th finish him off.
The rest of the game is the chainfighter and Sonya getting taken out, although the Chainfighter does take down 2 more 10th to score infectedsloth another 75 points.
This was an intense match. Some great rolling taking down Cyprien early was really crucial because Zelrig didn’t do hardly anything. The Hydra getting taken down without being able to do much after killing Zelrig was huge too.
Casualties: Zelrig, 8 10th Regiment
Round 4: vs. Tomrza44 (#3, Jandar Champ, 4-1)
Army : Omnicron Snipers x 5
Map: Embattled Fen
Glyphs: Exposed Wound Glyph
Very poor matchup for Tomas. And on top of that, it was a bad map for his snipers too, as this is a very flat map. Zelrig wins initiative and on the second turn, (after surviving a few potshots from the sniper) is able to score a Z-Bomb into the starting zone wiping out 3 Snipers. Z takes a few wounds after the snipers take height on the level 3 zone on the top of the map, but he retreats south taking out a 4th sniper. Tomas also sends a sniper in the height above my base and takes out some 10th.
Round 2 has Zelrig taking out 3 more snipers while absorbing another wound or 2. The 10th finally take out the pestering sniper after he had taken out 3.
Zelrig goes down in round 3, but this leaves 6 snipers vs. 13 10th regiment. Despite height, the 10th are able to charge at the snipers and even take down 1 of them with the wound glyph. Eventually the snipers are overrun. Too many whiffs from them and it was as tough map and matchup.
Casualties: Zelrig, 6 10th Regiment
Round 5: vs. Boromir96 (#2, Utgar Champ, 4-2)
Army: Cyprien, Sonya, Stingers x 5
Map: Invasion
Glyphs: Removed with agreement from opponent
Boromir and I were the last two undefeated people at 4-0. I was nervous about this map, because the jungle could allow his figures to get the extra defense against Majestic fire. Plus Cyprien could always put a hurt on you. This was the second game facing Cyprien and I felt I got luck the first time.
I win initiative and send out Zelrig. Some Stinger advance but Z blocks. My second move since Zelrig to the barricaded 7 spaced tile right above his base. The Z bomb takes out 3 stingers in his base, though Sonya blocks. Cyprien is #2 and fails his CT, but hits for a wound. Zelrig retreats (disengage miss) slightly on turn 3 and takes out a 4th stinger. Cyprien double fails.
Round 2 sees Zelrig again disengage (miss) and firebomb another 3 stingers in the base. Zelrig takes another wound or two before retreating. He takes out another couple of stinger, leaving his death toll at 10 (maybe 9) stingers. The 10th start to advance, and as they do Cyprien after 3 CT fails, hits Z with a 20. Dead dragon. Thankfully he had already put a huge dent in the stinger force.
Cyprien skirmishes with the 10th regiment for a while. He has height and jungle from attacks from my starting zone. I am reluctant to move them and lose the wait then fire bonus, but Cyprien is able to eat a few stragglers. Finally, Cyprien retreats with 3 wounds on him and having eaten some 10th.
The remaining 5-6 stinger come out advancing north. I send some 10th regiment that way to meet them, but send another south to encroach on the retreated Cyprien. The stingers and 10th trade casualties, but the 10th are more numerous. The single soldier I sent at Cyprien hits him for his 4th wound.
The stingers try to back up Cyprien, but the jungle now works for the 10th and they hold off the attacks. On the final turn of that round, Cyprien succumbs to wait then fire, the stingers aren’t far behind, and Sonya can only cry as her true love perished.
Zelrig broke the stinger force which is really what would win me this match. If Cyprien had hit the 20 CT on Z on his first try instead of his 4th try…..well I don’t think the British flag would have been waving at the end.
Casualties: Zelrig, 7 10th Regiment
Tournament Championship: vs. Boromir96 (#2, Utgar Champ, 4-2)
Army: Cyprien, Sonya, Stingers x 5
Map: Ember Canyon Road
Glyphs: Removed with agreement from opponent
There were 3 people sitting at 4-1 after the 5th round. Boromir96, Tomrza44, and legoboy. I hadn’t played legoboy yet (Nilfheim and Knights army), but my opponent for the championship was chosen by Strength of Schedule tiebreaker, and that turned out to be Boromir96. So after using a d20 to decide the championship map, we started setting up on Ember Canyon Road for a rematch
I won initiative and Zelrig Fired off a Majestic Fire into his base that wiped out 4 stingers. The stingers counter attacked but missed. Zelrig responded by destroying another 3 Stingers. This time though a stinger drain and 4/4 attack with a 0/5 defense put 4 hearty wounds on Zelrig. He retreated to the road to avoid the lava roll, but still killed an 8th stinger.
Round 2 say Zelrig take down a 9th stinger before succumbing. Cyprien became involved at this point and tried some funny business in my base. He retreated though after taking 3 wounds and only killed a few 10th regiment. This time he didn’t have the jungle cover and wasn’t as sturdy. The next advantage this map gave to my army presented itself as the 10th regiment were able to use their higher range from atop the mountains to better against the stingers. Eventually there were only 2 stingers left, Cyprien, and Sonya, vs. 13 10th Regiment. Cyprien ate one of his own Stingers to heal himself to 3 life and flew in to give a last stand against the 10th. He double failed of course and the 10th Regiment bayoneted him back to the underworld. The lone stinger managed to take down a 10th, but they charged the canyon and eliminated the stinger and the Wife.
I really couldn’t have asked for a better map against Boromir’s army. The 10th being able to outrange the stingers and Zelrig getting starting zone blasts off on turn 1 were the critical points of this match. Boromir gave me two good games, and I know I’ll have my work cut out facing him next year.
Casualties: Zelrig, 4 10th Regiment
Summary: Zelrig and the 10th took back to back General Wars Tournament Championships in Peoria, and I was quite happy with how they played. I was nervous against some of my opponents who didn’t lean on squads, but the 10th took up the slack and then some when that occurred. Again, there were a lot of new faces at the tournament which is great to see, and I look forward to seeing them all again next year or hopefully sooner. Rumor is that General Wars won’t be back next year, so Z and the 10th maybe be put on the shelf, but they’ll always be lurking ready to return when called upon

Great event! Thanks to Ryougabot for pulling it all together!
Had a blast at my first tournament! My only regret is that with my "perfect" 0-5 record, I couldn't help anyone's strength of schedule.:D
I don't remember all the details of the battles - a couple went so quickly they are just a blur.
In Round 1, my Aquilla Wyvern-Blue Wyrmling-Spider-Deathchaser army was soundly defeated on Bad Moon Rising by EvarScarcarver's Braxas-Evar Scarcarver-Gorillinator force. Learned a valuable lesson: if you wound Evar, finish him off right away. Frost Rage with a few wounds is devastating. Braxas did well with her Acid Breath, too. I only managed to finish off 90 points. Evar and Braxas were both wounded, but I didn't finish either.
In Round 2, my army fell almost as quickly to a Stinger-Nagrub-TKN build. The battle lasted a bit longer than the first due to the heavy snow and slippery ice on Arctic Divide (who's bright idea was that? Oh, yeah, nevermind ;)). TKN moved up for a closer look, didn't even work up enough of a sweat to eat a Nagrub.
I fared a little better in Round 3 on Ember Canyon Road. My troops fought bravely against Briaka's Krav-Nakita-Mika-Dund-Black Wyrmling army. Destroyed 290 points, but took too long to get rid of Mika. Mika was on a shadow with Dund occupying a defense glyph. If I had knocked her out a few turns sooner, I had a chance.
Round 4 started well for me against a Marcus-Legos-Archers-Parmenio-Sacred Band-Guilty army on Broken Skyline. The Deathchasers earned their battle pay by tying up the middle. Parmenio fell quickly to the DCs and a Wyvern. I hacked through several Legos before the DCs fell. By that time, the Spiders were in the mix and helping out. My first Wyvern wreaked havoc for a while, but after he fell, and the second entered the battle, it was quickly destroyed. The last of the Spiders and the 2 Wyrmlings did what they could. In the end, I had taken out Marcus, Parmenio, all the Legos and I believe all the Sacred Band. Unfortunately in the process I had lost all but a single Wyrmling. An Arrow Volley took him out. Still, I destroyed another 290 points and had a chance to win, so it was a good match for me.
In Round 5, I faced off against Briaka's son and his Q9-Microcorp-Krav force on Fire Isles. DCs did a little bit of damage as did the Spiders. The Wyvern and Wyrmlings took out a few figures, too. I managed to knock out everyone except Q9 (I think?) who did take 1 wound. I benefited from a few bad Queglix rolls which kept me around longer. Destroyed 300 points before falling and had a chance to win.
The best thing about the day was how much fun it was. I knew going in that I would probably not win a game. I was right, but it didn't matter. I got to play Heroscape all day and met some great Scapers.
Thanks to those that voted for me for the Sportsmanship award! That was humbling. Used my GC (along with a little cash - don't tell my wife!) and picked up some Star Wars minis for customs. My son enjoyed seeing those and the Heroscape comic book I brought home as well.
Thanks again to Ryougabot and to everyone involved for making it a great day!

You know,I was thinking about this Tournament the other day,And I realised that I had never practiced with my army before:D I had used Variations before,But I had never even played with that army:D
On a side note,I saw this,
Everyone received a good sportsmanship ballot. All participants voted for the most sportsmanlike opponent the encountered. The winner was Mac122 with three votes. There was a 2 way tie for second with two votes a piece. Every other vote was for a different person. Statistically, this tells me that this entire group was sportsmanlike.
And I thought,How can every person get a vote,And some people get more than one? statistically, that's impossible, unless some people voted twice.

"Every other vote was for a different person" not "Every person received a vote". So, assuming everyone voted, there were 4 people who did not receive votes - 2 extra votes for winner and 2 extra votes for the 2nd place finishers.

I had an idea for a tournament.
I call it "The end of Valhalla Tournament"
Every participant must bring 7 250 pt (12 hex) armies that are general specific. Each player will be seeded according to Swiss rules...but they will also be teamed with another player and they will be given an army to play Ja, Ei, Ul Aq. The opposing team will be given Ut, Vy, Va. No team may have the same general. This way each team will have a blended army with the new Valhalla breakdowns. The game will be played with the cooperative rules from Shadow caverns (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/downloads.php?do=file&id=3719). At the end of each game, the players will be divided by win/loss record, and they will have new teams and new armies.
The ultimate winner will be the player with the highest win/loss
Based on this you are not likely to face the same army with the same army twice. I think this will be a great way to find the good players vs the good armies.
What so you guys think?

But that doesn't mean I like spamming stingers, it was my only Utgar common squad lol.:D

I'm actually toying with the idea of a draft style tournament looking at how other people have done it.....unless I get a ferocious amount of negative feedback. Probably start a thread at the end of August for the 2012 NHSD.

I like that idea, would it be a pooled draft?

I know my opinion doesn't really matter since I am not going to your NHSD Event if I go to any, but I've been fascinated by this type of tourney: Silent Auction Tournament (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=42203&highlight=Auction)

I like the pooled draft idea more than the silent auction, as a pooled draft is actually almost like a Reverse the Whip tournament, because you don't want to bring anything too strong. The silent auction seems like it just adds unnecessary time to the setup of a tournament.

Yeah, I'm thinking of a pooled draft from the two opponents and reducing the army point totals to 400 to compensate for the added time of drafting.
Again nothing official, but strongly leaning that way.

A pooled draft event sounds like a lot of fun, General wars and a limit on commons don't really interest me. Have you given any thought to allowing C3V/SoV?

We just had a silent auction tournament in California. Though it was a fun idea, it didn't feel like it was really a test of my ability to design a tournament army within the parameters of a tournament. It felt a whole lot more like a test of my ability to bid efficiently. I failed to get any of the armies I really wanted. Because of the way I bid (conservatively, I thought) , I ended up with two third-choice armies, neither of which lived up to tournament-level play, though they would have been a blast in casual play. I was outbid on the armies I really wanted in every case.
I played them as well as I could, but they just weren't up to snuff.
A year or so ago we did a pooled-draft tournament and it was loads more fun!
