Welcome to the C3V
(Classic Custom Creators of Valhalla)
Hello!
We're glad you could stop in. This is the place where you can come to extend your Heroscape game with some amazing, community-approved customs. We hope you take the time to see what this piece of Heroscapers is all about.
Allow me to be your guide into the new era of Classic Heroscape.
Here's how to get started:
Choose some cards to play with: Check out our C3V Books of Index (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=33402). There you will be able to browse through all the cards that we have designed.
Get the figures: Each Book will list, below the cards, what figures that card uses. You can purchase these figures from many stores, both online and brick-and-mortar.
Print the cards: Each Book has a PDF link under each card. You can download those PDFs by clicking on the links. Save those PDFs to your computer and print them out at home or at a print shop. Then simply cut the cards out and take them to your gaming table. What? You want to know more about the C3V first? Sure, no problem!
What is the C3V?
C3V is a customs project with the goal of creating fun, reliable, playtested Heroscape customs that are designed to work seamlessly with all other C3V and SoV customs, as well as official Heroscape units.
Our History and Process:
When was the C3V established?
Back when WotC announced they were discontinuing Heroscape, Griffin, a well respected member of the community and founding Member of the C3G, asked if a version of the successful C3G method would work as a means to continue Heroscape into a new era. The community answered with a resounding "Yes," so Griffin, IAmBatman, and Grungebob started working on getting the C3V operational. The C3V would be involved in the entire process of unit creation: deciding which ideas to develop, designing powers and stat blocks, playtesting, and organizing them into waves.
How Does C3V Work?
We are broken down into departments just like employees at large companies. There are designers, editors and graphic artists all working towards making new 'scape for the community. Each design moves through each department in a step-by-step process as they develop into a certified C3V Unit.
C3V Method:
DESIGN DEPARTMENT:
It is the designers' job to continually discuss and create new additions to the game of Heroscape. They create the stats and powers, choose a figure, and get the bare bones of a design all worked out in their department. They are responsible for monitoring and posting in brainstorming threads and collaborating on initial designs.
EXECUTIVE REVIEW BOARD:
It is the ERB's job to review each design, discuss the big picture, and direct the group in a way that fits the Heroscape aesthetic, endowing the C3V with goals and a long term vision. The ERB monitors all threads, keeps tabs on everything going on in the C3V Inner Sanctum, and makes many of the "big decisions."
EDITING DEPARTMENT:
It is the editors' job to review the grammar and textual aesthetics of the card and correct the text if necessary. They make sure the card follows the precedents of all classic army cards and is worded in familiar "Heroscapey" language.
PLAYTESTING DEPARTMENT:
It is the lead playtesters' job to do the initial playtest on each design that gets moved into the Playtesting Department. Lead playtesters will also be the "public face" of C3V: dispersing designs among interested public playtesters; organizing, analyzing, and sharing the results of these playtests with the C3V members; answering playtesting questions for the public; and coordinating with the lead designers on each individual design.
ART DEPARTMENT:
It is the artists' job to create a finished downloadable/printable product of the design. They create the advanced and basic sides of the army card itself, as well as producing a PDF for each army card.
FINAL REVIEW:
Once an army card is created and finished in the Art Department, it is moved on to the final stage. The design and its card gets voted on by every member of the C3V and SoV to determine if we agree that the design fits into the Heroscape canon and is worthy of being released to the public as a certified C3V Unit.
Is that it?
Nope! There is so much more I'd like to show you ...
What figures are used and where do we get them?
We use figures from other games that look like they will work with official Heroscape sculpts. We list information about a figure being used right in the unit's "Book of" thread for easy reference. After C3V1 (Wave 14), the ERB decided to release information about each figure that has been approved by the ERB in the C3V Public Miniature Information Thread (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=35777). Every figure the C3V will be using at some point is listed there. It may be in the next wave or another one down the road, but we will use that figure.
How We Choose Figures:
The ERB decides on figures based on aesthetics, availability, and price. We try not to choose rare or expensive figures, and we monitor availability constantly. Now, please understand we cannot control the buying habits of the gamer population, so a figure that was in good supply when the information was released may not be as readily available by the time the unit is released. That is the nature of the beast, but please check out the Shopping for SoV/C3V minis (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=37613) thread. There you can find links to online stores that may sell the figures we are using for C3V. Also, we're always happy to provide links to places you can find figures. (We track all that information in the Inner Sanctum).
Can I contribute more to the C3V?
There are many ways to get involved. You can volunteer to playtest, you can make suggestions to the designers, you can author the public books for released C3V units, you can get voted in as a PAM (Public Access Member) by your fellow Heroscapers, or you could even be inducted as an C3V Member or SoV Judge by existing Inner Sanctum members.
Public Playtesting
After our lead playtesters do a thorough job of initially testing a design, we need to get public feedback on how a design works. So we have the C3V Public Playtesting Sign-up (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=33397) thread where our lead playtesters list units that we are currently testing. You can send a PM to the lead playtester list in the first post of the thread and sign up to playtest a unit. The playtesters will send you all the stats of a unit being designed and you'll be required to give back detailed feedback on how that unit plays. Did the unit perform well? Is the name OK? Is the unit fun? The more information we receive the better. And now we have a C3V Public Playtesting Tips & Tricks (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=42178)thread to assist in making your playtests more helpful to the C3V.
C3V Points & Rewards
Any time Heroscapers do any form of playtesting for the C3V, they will receive C3V Reward Points (C3VRP), and are encouraged to keep a record of their C3VRP in theC3V Points & Rewards Thread (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=42429). C3VRP is used as a general rewards program for the C3V, both for members and the public.
Suggestion Boxes
The Suggestions for the C3V Design Team (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=33405) thread is where you can make figure, power, and theme suggestions to our design team. Not only do they watch that thread, but all suggestions are posted to a thread in the Inner Sanctum so we can keep track of what our fans want.
The C3V Human Resources Department (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=33474) thread is where you can go to offer suggestions to the entire team, comment on how we are doing, or register complaints. The ERB watches this thread and monitors how the community perceives the project.
Books of C3V/Sov Units
C3V Books of Index (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=33402)
The C3V is a community project, so any community member can author a "Book of" thread for a unit released on the front page or in the Soldiers of Valhalla - display (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=36007) thread. Just PM Dad_Scaper (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/member.php?u=1784) and ask to author a Book. He'll let you know the format and if it is OK to proceed.
PAM (Public Access Member)
Every 45 days, the Inner Sanctum (which includes current PAMs) makes a list of candidates for a PAM vote. A thread is created for the entire Heroscapers community to vote for a new Public Access Member. The 'scaper with the most votes gets a 3-month temporary pass into the Inner Sanctum, with all the voting and posting privileges of a full-time member. Once in the sanctum, a PAM may choose what department they would like to assist in. Most have chosen design, and many PAM designs have made it all the way through the process, so it is a great opportunity.
C3V Membership
C3V Inner Sanctum members (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=35509)
C3V members are voted in by other members. There is no term limit on membership; you are a member until you decide to retire. We periodically bring in new membership after a retirement or when the department heads decide they need to expand and bring in some new blood.
Well, that's it ...
Oh, you have one more question? OK, shoot!
Why use the C3V?
The C3V is composed of many respected members of this community, and those members are trusted to follow design methods which are similar to those that the Hasbro designers followed to create the game we all love.
The SoV are thoroughly playtested community designs that are nominated by 'scapers and then judged by a panel of respected members of Heroscapers, similar to how maps are chosen by the BoV. They try to find the best of the best customs to induct into the SoV.
The SoV and the C3V now work together as partners to continue Heroscape into the future. It was determined that the SoV Judges and the C3V Members had to coordinate with each other so that one group would not approve a unit that could create issues with the other group's designs. So the SoV and the C3V became partners; all SoV Judges are now C3V Inner Sanctum Members, with the same voting and posting privileges as C3V Members and PAMs. Likewise, C3V Members get to vote on the final decision to determine if an SoV nominee is worthy to become part of the new Heroscape canon.
Since we have garnered the trust of the community, tournament directors are beginning to allow C3V and SoV units at organized events. It is a groundbreaking decision by the community to allow the C3V and SoV customs to work side-by-side with official Heroscape. We are glad the community trusts our designs and hope more tournaments begin to adopt the C3V and SoV into the future of organized play.
This concludes our journey through the C3V. I'm glad you took the time to join us on this tour.
I hoped I answered all your questions. If not, please do not hesitate to ask.
Also, one last thing: all important announcements for the C3V (new figures being used, contests, front page and blog alerts, etc) can be found in the C3V Public Announcements Thread (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=33420).
Cheers,

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this, but I just played my first game with C3V figures and they were great. I won't go into all the details, but I personally got to play with four squads of the M-43 Resistance fighters in a 3v3 match. They were a blast! I picked them mainly just to try them, but I loved getting to bring up supports/replacements after I attacked. My opponent's wizard army went essentially untouched because I wouldn't bother pitting my 2-attack resistance fighters against his Haduc-boosted elves. Meanwhile one of my allies was completely decimated, so I didn't end up winning, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Keep up the good work! I can't wait to try the other figures and see what else you come up with! I'm looking at finding a way to purchase figures to help with playtesting.

Proxies dude, proxies. Just grab some other figures that you have and use them as whatever it is you are playtesting with. If you have a friend or group that wants to playtest, you can even use their stuff. Thanks for your future playtests, we need all the community support/help we can get.

Very likely, once everything is complete.Do we know if we're going to get a "all cards this wave" pdf, with multiple cards per page? That would make them a lot nicer to print out, now that all the cards are revealed.
That's not something on our Art Team's to-do list.
There are others, not in the C3V, who may want to try to put something like that together.Three pages of one-off heroes. Two more for the five Commons, especially if you add the Zombie Hulk's card.
Any idea when this would be done (and by whom)? :grandfather: (Before or after NHSD?)

I did not have her. I want to try her. It would have been great to have her around, because I could have used her ability on Haduc and the pesky wizards near him.

Until you pick up the actual mini (or a better proxy), just use Trinity (from the Krav) or one of the Nakitas to be Kira. Any of those would be fine, imo.
I use a female Mage Knight unit for my Kira. She is a lot of fun to play, though mostly a filler, of course.

I think that is a great idea. Contact the USR people and ask them before you use their format. I think they'll welcome some FanScape posts, just be sure to post them here in the Customs area.

Yeah, let us know what they say. My guess is that they would be okay with us following their usual rules and just posting the Review here in the C3V/SoV sections.
Would be a great addition to FanScape, imo.

I am trying to get a collection of perfectly-sized PDFs of all the official cards for others usage, and was wondering if there was a way to know they are the right size without having to print them out.
Thanks either way! - Fi

The cards are created in templates that are of the exact measurements of the official cards, so that when they are printed out properly they should match up exactly.
I know I have those measurements someplace, I'll look around and see if I can find where I posted them those many months and months ago.

I invite everyone to check out the Fan-Fic contest thread over the next week or two. This is where writer's compete for glory entering submissions to ever changing prompts. The current prompt (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showpost.php?p=1616797&postcount=1303) involves C3V/SoV so I thought some of you here might want to check it out or better yet throw your hat in the ring.
Looking forward to the new release. If it drops soon enough perhaps we will get an entry for a new design.

Many thanks to you Viegon for responding and choosing to enter. At least my attempt at cross promotion was not a total failure. I am hoping that new wave releases in time for some people to write about some of the new designs. Best of luck ironing out that Einar template.
Looking forward to hopefully playing the new designs at ZB's next tournament. Get better ZB. Keep fighting the good fight C3V.

Right now is a very crazy time in C3V as we are getting ready for our next wave release so trust me that no one is purposely not paying attention. Rest assured that we will be paying attention to this contest with great anticipation. As a member of our fiction writing team I know I look forward to this and I am sure that others are as well.

Rest assured we are very busy trying to get the next wave out real soon, so our effort are focused elsewhere.

Question for the C3V team regarding Tornado's Contest: What planet are the Maraedians from?
(I know the answer is probably out there somewhere, so I apologize for this)
From the Heroscape Compendium (where I get most of my information ;))
Alpha Prime
Alpha Prime is now a war-torn husk of the glorious world that it used to be. In a time now lost to history, a brilliant race thrived there. The planet was then called Mariedian. With technology the Mariedians ended crime; with technology they ended hunger; and with technology they ended war. Life was good. Hard labor was performed by the Robota, complex machines designed to perform arduous tasks. It was one grief-stricken scientist who, after losing a child to a fatal accident, changed that beautiful world’s history forever. In an effort to save the child from death, he twisted science to preserve the soul of his child in the metal encasings of a Robota. Thus, the Soulborg were born. Three Millennia pass and now the Soulborg rule the planet, fighting amongst themselves in a constant state of civil war between factions. Mariedians still exist, mostly as slaves on the prison planet Isadora. But there is a resistance. Small factions of Mariedians, driven deep underground, still fight the Soulborg. The Blastatrons, and their counterparts the Gladiatrons, were built to mimic the size, movement, and guerrilla fighting style of the Mariedian resistance— for the Mariedians continue to adapt and survive against great odds. While that disgusts many Soulborg, others envy those traits.
Alpha Prime is said to contain a flatland region and there is mention of gladiatorial fighting pits located there.

Hello Bothi,
The C3V is made up of Scapers who work to extend Heroscape by creating new units, using figures from other games.
To be a member, you have to be invited.
But you can still be helpful by playtesting units, posting ideas, and showing interest in the C3V.
We vote on new members and PAM's (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=41474) based on the participation of a prospective candidate...so if you keep participating in our Community "events" you may be invited into the Inner Sanctum one day.

The C3V Public Miniature Information Thread is not stickied. I had to go back a few pages to find it. On that subject, there are still a number of Wave 15 Figures listed there.
Anyway, the reason I did all this was to ask a question about
ATTENTION:
Sneak Peek - A Common Squad in development by the C3V
(4 medium figures)
http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z356/SMO1971/Heroscape/Comparison%20shots/Schrih2.jpg?t=1325902522
The figures used for this unit are Confrontation Scorpion Clones Unit Box.
NOTE: There are four types of Scorpion minis: Clones, Crossbowmen, Sentinels and Skorize. One or more of those types will be pictured on the C3V card, but they are all similar enough to each other to serve as excellent proxies.
How many squads of these should I get? What's the optimum number, and what gives me the most flexibility in army building. If I wanted to run an army composed of Clones, with some synergy, how many would I want? I'm looking at getting 16-20ish (4-5 squads).
Viegon
July 5th, 2012, 02:52 PM
I don't have any playtesting experience with the Clones yet, so I could be off, but I would say that 2-4 squads sounds right, and definitely no more than 5 in most builds.

A few days ago I made some C3V logos for each general (more for fun than another reason), but as you seems to prefer C3V cards without a logo, I'll just post the main logo I made, not for Army Cards, but only for C3V topics, announcements etc...
Obviously, I don't force you to use it, it's only a proposition!

Yep. You just go to the How-to-play Question Dump in the Online Events section and follow the instructions to set up a game. You need to do OMs some other way but for the most part it is fine.

You can do it. At one point you had to have the two "players" on separate browsers in order to keep the sign-ins and OMs straight. Or you could just write them down before each round.
But yes, I have done it before, and others as well.

Okay, so since it looks like I can I probably will playtest. I'm leaning towards bloodburst thrall as my playtest. It just sucks to not have any one concerned with brokeness to play with regularly (I normally play with my ten year old sister. She's fun to play with and her strategies are improving but she's not concerned with overpowered units).

I have a question for the designers over here. Was there any hesitation with using the Skeletons of Annelitia and the Skull Demons. Atleast as far as the Ram Army Box goes, the skeletons do not match up to four different sculpts that are reapeated four times, but (atleast from a quick glance at them), there seem to be upwards of eight different sculpts. I know some other units do this too, so I'm just curious as to whether or not that posed an issue to you all, as I know the goal with C3V is to keep things as close to Classic Scape as possible.
Arch-vile
February 28th, 2013, 11:00 PM
I wasn't in the C3V when those sculpts were originally picked (I'm not a Designer either), but I believe they were chosen because all 8 were extremely close looking to one another. Since squads (especially common) are very difficult to find nowadays, the Confrontation / AT-43 boxes were an obvious choice.
Personally, I'd rather have 16 different sculpts than a 4x of only 4 different sculpts. It's a bonus rather than a bug, to me. I kinda wish classic units were like that too ... it'd be really cool for all the Zombies to look different. :p

That's an excellent question.
This isn't the only situation where we grappled with that, BB. We've had similar issues with other minis before.
Ideally, and the purists might say this should still be the case, we would have perfect sets of four.
But how could we split them any other way? Could we take these nearly identical sculpts and split them into different squads? Who could tell them apart? Or, more sinful given the need for good minis, should we choose not to use them?
The #1 thing I want us to do is generate awesome Heroscape stuff for you guys to play with. It's important for us to hew close to tradition where we can, but in the real world of FanScape, I think in order for us to do the #1 thing it's also important we fearlessly carve out a little room for us to do our own thing, too.
Thanks for the excellent question, BB.

Hey BB,
It was brought up early in his develpment that with his Blue "Color"; he would fit into Jandar. Plus he started out with One-Shield Defense, which we changed to Shield of Valor after he was changed to Jandar; which tied him in brilliantly. Overall, we felt his theme fit more into the Jandar Army.
I actually brought up this in the design process:
His ability to fight by going mano-a-mano seems kind of Gallant, so I think he fits in with Jandar. I think this is one of those cases where you have one Unit that is poached.
Examples:
Sudema (Undead) poached by Vydar.
Master Woo (Monk) poached by Aquilla.
Even in the wave we are working on we have a Elf being poached by Utgar.

I want us to steer clear of the sacred cows as much as possible, but that ain't one of 'em, in my book. Why should humans and Kyrie be the only races that span more than one general?

Don't forget the Soulborgs, and C3V made an Utgar Elf too. (Drow don't really count as elves.) Giants, though really a collection of races, also make multiple generals feel loved. I'm sure there are others too.

I'm pretty sure he was put on hold because it made more sense to playtest and/or release him along with one or more units with which he had synergy, and those unit(s) hadn't yet been designed or weren't far enough along in the process.

Locksley is a tricky unit to design, as AU described, and so he's gone back and forth in the process trying to get him just right. He's had trouble in the playtesting phase; his design is rather groundbreaking but he wasn't playing up to standards and so it's been a long process.
He will be released eventually, don't worry. :)

I think the problems with the past two sites were not enough distribution of control. Right now, there is not one person who has complete access to the server and all of its files (and all of its backups): there are four. So you don't have to worry about what happens if one of us gets hit by a bus or takes on a new job or sells off our collection--you only need to worry if that happens to all four of us at once. :D
But it's good that you're asking these things. It's definitely good for people to be concerned about these things before they become problems.

Just a quick question... Has the C3V team ever considered creating scenarios to go along with the storyline of each wave? These seem like pretty large happenings in our beloved land of Valhalla, and I'd love to see maps/scenarios like those we saw in the rule booklets... I actually enjoy playing those pretty often (Migol's Tomb!!!), as sometimes when I create a map/scenario it's horribly unbalanced.
Perhaps one campaign and/or scenario with a map for each wave, requiring the entire wave to be played?
:D
Arch-vile
April 3rd, 2013, 06:31 PM
I'd love to see some scenarios, and we've talked about it in the past. Nothing is in the works, unfortunately, but if there is huge public interest that might get something started. The problem lies in the workload of everyone: everyone in the Inner Sanctum is already pretty busy in their own department.
Good suggestion, though, and I hope we'll do scenarios eventually. :D

fwiw, having worked on several for C3G, scenarios are a ton of work. Lots of fun, but a lot more work for an individual scenario than, say, an individual unit (which is already a ton of work to get through the very safeguarded C3V process!).

Not that I know of. You could mess with Gimp/Photoshop I suppose (probably somewhat painlessly if you are familiar with the program).
I just stick the paper in the printer backwards and deal with 2-to-a-page.

One in each top corner, and the third card center down. But you'll have to put very narrow margins.

C3G has a card printing system for theirs that prints 3 a page. ;)
I don't think C3G adds the "bleed" area around the edges of the cards, so it's much easier to fit 3 per page.

I go to a local print shop to get my cards done. They give me a large piece with 8 cards on one and they are the same as the original cards. It's only a few dollars to get done.

So for all of the C3V/SoV guys without bios, would any random member of the community (me) be able to submit a bio to someone that could be posted in the book.
If so, who would I send the bio to?

The C3V Outer Sanctum Fiction Team is working hard on creating some really cool bios, so hopefully we'll be able to release some more soon. If you would like to post a bio you wrote in the book, I'll happily pass it on to the fiction team so they can look at it. Just know that nothing written by anyone, C3V member or not, will become an "official" bio without at least a small amount of editing, however.
Son of Arathorn, johnny139, and Ryougabot are the three Fiction Writers currently, if you wanted to know.

Yeah that makes sense, you all have to make sure everything meshes and whatnot. My main question was more who to send the bio to so that it could be reviewed, and now I know. Thank you very much.

Quick question:
Is the bio for Kursus that I came up with and Ryougabot wrote still going to be used? I REALLY like his version and want it to stay as it is. :)

The card on the bottom for all of the Eilain Sidhe sheets seems to be abnormally large on the screen. Will this affect printing size?

Yes, it has happened to me many many times. I thought it was just my computer acting new to the PDF versions but apparently it is happening to everyone. Maybe an error in the uploading process ?

I'll ask the Art team about it.

It's been happening ever since I started using downloadable cards. Maybe its just an unfixable glitch.
