The Book of Single Hex Volcano Custom Tutorial

http://c3ggames.com/C3G/released/terrain/C3G-T_Volcano_1.JPG

-Supplies Needed-
Household aluminum foil
Sculpey Oven Bake Clay
An official Heroscape single hex Ice Glacier or a small screw driver
A conventional or toaster oven for baking
A cookie tray
Red acrylic paint
Gray acrylic paint
Paint brush-Tutorial-
Mold your aluminum foil into the shape of an official single hex Ice Glacier; this shape is about 1 1/2 inches wide at its base and 3 inches tall.
http://c3ggames.com/C3G/released/terrain/Ice/C3G-T_Ice_1.JPG
Mold a thin layer of Sculpey over the entire aluminum mold.
Place the official Heroscape glacier against the side of the model and roll the two together as you press them. This should create a nice pattern across the mold.

or, if you don't have the official Ice Glacier, you could use a small screwdriver to create a similar pattern. Place the flat end of the screw driver on the model near the top and drag down creating small crevices along the sides.
Stand the model up on your baking sheet and place it in the oven.
Bake according to the directions.
Paint the entire surface red.
Go over the raised and bumpy parts of the model with a gray brush, being sure to leave plenty of red crevices and cracks.
Your finished product can now be placed on any hex on the battlefield and used as a Volcano.

The official single hex Ice Glacier is the exact same size and shape as the single hex Rock Outcrop.
The paints used were Apple Barrel paints. They are usually less than a dollar for a bottle at any Wal-Mart or craft store.

Not in love with the paint job, but it's a great idea .

Great work Griff.

I really wanted to darken the gray with some black, put some yellow between the red and gray and splatter some orange all around. Then drip Yellow and Red on top for flowing lava, but I really wanted to keep it as simple as possible and also match the official design of the hexes.

Thanks for the support though.

Is there any way we can work the bottoms of these to get them to be flush to the hexes a bit more?

You want it to interlock?

I could do a number of things to make it more "lockable", but this really does work great, and it is very easy for just about anyone. It is heavy so it doesn't move around. Essentially, it is a heavy piece of terrain that is more stable than the RotV ruins or even the Warehouse - both of those just sit there.

I think a locking one would be more aesthetically pleasing and would be more likely to be accepted by the masses due to it looking more "official." :-)

Glue it to a Hex or Water tile.

IAmBatman

Will it rest flush on those, though?

Griffin

Oh yeah. This guy sit up flush on any flat surface, and is extremely stable - just look at the pics. Seriously, gluing it to a hex or water tile is just a waste of terrain IMO.

And I'm not really advocating it - that was your comment. :-P I just think this custom might be more widely appreciated if it has an interlocking bottom as part of it.
If that's too complex for what you're going for here, though, I understand. Just trying to offer some outsider feedback.

I personally don't see the need, but if another member wanted to create a tutorial on how to make interlocking hexes for terrain like this, that would be cool.

It's not about "need" - it's about putting forth the best possible product that will appeal the most to the masses. At least I was thinking that was the goal here ...

There is the best (which is difficult to make), and there is the acceptable (a bit easier to make). I went with a design that is easy enough for even you to make, and you don't have to invest much in the products required either, or alter any of your official Scape stuff.

This should help:

Are you guys talking about finding stuff to mod slightly (train set type things) or are you talking about make from scratch?
It would be both actually. I am interested in terrain that can be found easily and bought at an affordable price, and also terrain that can be easily made without too much skill or time. Of course I am not against a member creating a tutorial on how to make a very complex terrain either, or a tutorial on where to buy a very expensive terrain. Basically, nothing is "off the table" for us. We simply create a huge data base for others to draw from for actual C3G Book Designs. It would be at that point that the Heroes can decide what to use and what not to use. I imagine a data base with hundreds of tutorials that never get chosen, but a dozen or so that are chosen and fully designed by C3G. We simply create the ammo, C3G decides whether or not to shoot it.

So Bats, your critiques can be part of your selection process. If you don't like a terrain piece, don't choose to design it.

The only way this terrain or any terrain we make will be seen by the world or be part of the C3G family is if one of us chooses it and starts a Design thread for it.

One thing I don't like here is the grey looks too light compared to the Lava tile. But other than that it looks awesome.

I agree. I didn't have a darker gray, but I may buy one and fix it. Or I could mix the gray with some black, but I didn't want to complicate the tutorial.

I think if you just used the correct shade of grey, people could figure out how to get the color either by mixing or buying.

OK, I can do that later tonight.

Thanks for refining the goals of this project for me a bit here. :-) Clearly I didn't have a full grasp on it before.
I doubt I'll be steering away from designing any characters any time soon, and when I do it'll likely be in favor of doing DOs based on items I already have and don't need to do any custom work on, but I'll keep the stuff you guys create in mind.

Griffin

It would be great in the terrain thread if you could post a list of the items you have and are interested in. Then I can see what I can do for ya.

Also, I feel kinda bad about not giving you what you want out of this volcano, so I think I will give an additional tutorial (kind of a step further option) on how to make an interlocking Hex base.

To get the interlocking like bats is suggesting, what about if you made a bottom to it then pressed it down in the middle of 6 water pieces connected in a circle (hex actually). You know like a 7 hex piece tile but with the middle hex missing. Haven't worked with sculpey so I can't say if this would work or not.

Cheers

Griffin

That may work. The biggest problem is when you press the Sculpey into something, removing it from the mold without it stretching and changing shape.

Cutting out a bunch of paper hexes and then pasting them all together works great for creating a "Water tile". I have done that before.

Links fixed, but I think a couple of things might still need moving on the server. It did make two of the pictures pop up, though, at least. :-)

Two pictures are better than none, right?

That's what I figure! :-) I'm not sure whether or not A3n would even still have access to whatever else is supposed to be up there. When/if he sees this when he gets back next week, hopefully he'll let us know!

I downloaded all the files that were in the terrain folder from the old server to my own PC before re-uploading them, & the pics in the links were not amongst them. Also as I said somewhere else - I don't have access to the old server any more. :|

Might just have to cut our losses here, then. Thanks for the attempt, A3n!

I'd say its a safe bet that with all Griff's financial issues, he no longer has the server either.
