The 2 movies that scared the *explitive deleted* out of me are; Dr. Giggles and IT.
Keep in mind I saw both of these movies at a pretty young age, Dr. Giggles was when I was like 10 and IT I was 11-12 (I think). These were the first "scary" movies I saw.
I still find clowns creepy to this day. Everytime I see one all I can think about is Pennywise.

While the original "Aliens" almost got me, the scariest has to be the "Exorcist." Try watching that as a 12-year-old Catholic school kid at your neighbor's house. I had to call my mom so she could watch me cross the street (so the devil didn't get me) and then I slept in the parents room for 2 days after. That movie scared the hell INTO me, know what I mean? Then, top it off with the fear of my parents wanting to kick the crap out of me because I saw the movie in the first place. Very scary times.

IT was definately one of the big fears from my youth. As for more recent, aliens scare me a lot for some reason, so Signs was a real kick in the pants for me.
My worst/longest lasting fear from anything (other than aliens) was from Unsolved Mysteries: Bigfoot. I grew up in Alaska, 25 miles out of town, and our living room had this HUGE window that looked out into the blackness of the Alaskan winter wilderness. I had visions of Bigfoot or an abominable snowman just crashing through that window and...taking or eating me or something.

"The Ring" creeped me out a bit. Friggin' scary little girl coming out of the TV all twisted like... *shudder*
But don't see "The Ring 2"... it's lame.
As for MY scariest movie... when I first saw the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" when I was 11, that thing scared me senseless. At the time, I was with my friends so I couldn't really say anything without looking like a wuss. But when I went home that night, I didn't sleep. Seriously. I just stayed up playing with my GI Joe toys until daybreak.

That said, THIS MOVIE (http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/thereaping/) looks pretty trippy. :D
That does look pretty cool.
The Ring was definitely scary - that little girl crawling all jerky out of the TV was creepy as hell. It takes a lot for a movie to scare me, and Blair Witch, The Ring and Ju-On (sp? Japanese version of The Grudge) were about the only three movies I ever found actually scary. But then, I didn't watch scary movies as a kid, so I never wound up with that p sychological scarring you get when you see a movie like Alien as a 7-year-old. For me, a scary movie has to be really, really good to do much more than startle. Those three I mentioned are the only three movies I can recall ever seeing that cost me any sleep.
I think the difference is the brand of fear. I thought Texas Chainsaw was boring, and a little funny (Hey Leatherface! Come help me with Grampa!). I found the Nightmare on Elm Street movies to be pure campy hilarity - Freddie always had the funniest lines. Jaws was a great movie, but the fear it taps is surface fear. It doesn't stick with you. None of that fear sticks with you, unless it gets deeper than simply shocking or startling. To really frighten, a movie has to be masterfully crafted to dig through your jaded world view and get a grip on the deepest, most p sychologically powerful parts of your mind.
But then, I had a friend who saw Blair Witch after I was raving about it. Her comment was, 'It was boring. There wasn't even one 'yikes!' moment.' So maybe she would have been more scared by Friday the 13th.

IMax, you make a lot of really good points. The horror movie genre seems to have seasons. And currently, the season is grit and grime. The movies being promoted now days as 'horror' have pushed and blasted through the envelope of the severe and horrific imagery shown in the screen. The movies scare factors are often overpowered by their gore. And the gore isn't as playful as in days of old. Where as before you could easily see through an effect, knowing that the cut-away shot of a guy getting his head pulled off by a gaggle of zombies was ridiculously fake. However now, with the technology available to film makers these days, they want effect shops to make their vision look as real as possible. Couple that with no holds barred film directing and vicious scripts, and you've a vivid nightmare on screen.
The thing is, people enjoy these films. They get off on the visceral destruction of human flesh they see. And the majority of those attending these films, or renting or buying them, are youth. Teens talking about how cool Jigsaw and his contraptions of mutilation are. And I think that fact is the most scary when it comes to horror movies.

Dude! I have the same thing! At least once a year, my dreams are invaded by zombies. Of course, it's probably because about once a year, I watch a zombie movie.
HEH, that's exactly why Blair Witch scared the bejeezus out of me - since you never see the witch, you spend the entire movie inventing the horror in your own mind. The unknown is one of humanity's most primal fears, and a film that does a good job of tapping that fear is terrifying on a completely subliminal level.

Two quick hits:
1) As freaked out as my "zombie/end of World" dream is, I find myself wishing I had it more.
Frak, it's a great, free movie, that I hadn't read anything about going in.
2) "Primal fear" hits the nail on the head M.
And off the top of my head, I can't think of (right now) another example better than "Jaws".
Unlike "Jaws", we never see the "Witch".
If we could just "See her/process" said Witch, it would never be as hard to conquer.
I never saw BW2, heard it sucked from a hundred people, so I didn't bother. But, my understanding is they "Jumped the Shark" by
"Showing the Witch".
BTW, before I lay my head to sleep tonight...
"Night of the Living Dead".

I don't really get into scary movies. There was one I saw the beginning of when I was a kid (not sure what my age was) that creeped me out bad. I'm not sure what it was, but I think it was some sort of mummy movie. This guy gets drawn and quartered in the opening. Nothing gory, and it probably would look incredibly fake now, but that disturbed me really bad. Jaws was another movie that got me pretty bad. After I saw that when I was a kid I was afraid of the bath tub because I thought it could get me.

It's almost become cliche that the Exorcist tops many lists of the scariest movies.
But I was a little kid when I first saw it. Scared the crap out of me. I watched it again on DVD about a year ago (first time since I was a little kid). I was like, hmm. that wasn't so bad.

(Paraphrased) "There is nothing funny about a clown in the moonlight."
--Lon Chaney, Sr.
And he should know.
While I won't get into watching "Clownhouse," by the pedophile director of "Powder" and the "Jeepers Creepers" movies (saw the first, not the last two), I WILL comment on a scary movie that stays with me:
Evil Dead 2.
Sure, it's funny-scary, and the over-the-top gore is utterly ridiculous.
But it, at times, has very Lovecraftian elements to it.
There are incomprehensible cosmic forces out there, utterly alien to humanity, and to know them invites madness.
This sense of the Other, that you have no way to deal with, that's what sticks with me.

The Ring was better than its Japanese counterpart, Ringu, at keeping the majority of the movie's buildup to be entertaining and suspenseful. A lot of Ringu's buildup was just a wee bit boring. But I never forgave the Ring for completely screwing up the climax, which Ringu nailed down perfectly. The ending of Ringu haunted me afterwards. The ending of the Ring made me want to scream at the tv 'You don't intercut the only onscreen appearance of the ghost with a freaking CAR DRIVING SCENE, you idiots! It completely screws up all the dramatic tension of the shot! You're supposed to keep the camera unwaveringly on ghost as it walks closer to the audience very very slowly, giving the audience no chance to break free from the tension as it builds!'
Le sigh.
And a lot of people are scared by the Exorcist, but I never got particularly frightened of it. It just seemed very silly to me. Oh no, the Devil can make furniture move and vomit green stuff, I'm terrified. Maybe my Southern Baptisty heart got all primal fear of demons burnt out by way of vast theological differences with the Catholic Church, but to this day I've not seen a movie about demons, or devil worship, or demon possession that actually frightened me the least little bit.
P.S. Zombies make everything better.
P.P.S. There's nothing wrong with showing graphic gore on screen for a particular emotional effect. It isn't automatically inferior to keeping horrific things concealed as a storytelling method. However, showing things on screen does not, tis true, lead to an emotional effect of fear as such, for the most part. But then, horror films are not always meant to be scary, and that is something I'm not sure all of you realize. :)

That movie scared me as a kid too. But I think all the unexpected disruptions of what my notions of a hero were:
The cute and handsome young couple die in a fiery crash.
The cranky bald-headed guy was right - stay in the cellar. It was the safest place.
The little girl killing her mother.
Johnny getting and most definitely eating his sister.
Ben the black man surviving - and then being killed at the end.
Darn. that movie set me up and knocked me down countless times.
One of my favorites.

I can't be sure but I think part of it is imagination. I noticed my fairly young cousin who has little imagination for this kind of thing was not scared by the movie at all. He was in the "we never saw anything" group.
On the other hand I have a pretty active imagination and I think I'm more affected by the unshown bumps in the night while a lot of the chainsaw blood and gore seems really dumb to me.

It is all part of the dumbing down of America (and the rest of the world). There is simply an extreme lack of imagination in existence. With the overstimulation of the media with graphic detail movies are that are designed with no imagination required. They would rather gross you out than creep you out - this is absolutely backwards to what entertainment should accomplish! Soon movies are going to have to come a narrator explaining every part of the movie to the audience because they will no longer be equipt to folow the simpliest storyline on their own! "This is the bad man, he has a chainsaw and is chasing the blond with the big boobs ..."

I thought so too. The wife and I rarely go to movies as we don't leave our little one with baby-sitters often, really at all. The last times we went to the movies we saw shows based on previews but mostly what fell into the time we had available and what was showing then.
First movie was the remake of Poseidon, not very good. The last was Pulse and again not very good. We will stick with staying at home and playing HS when the little one goes to bed.

Since it hasn't been mentioned, how bout "Ghost and the Darkness". Fun to watch for many of the same reasons as "Jaws" and "Open Water" (see below). Real monsters lurking unseen, not too far away, waiting to eat you alive.
Night of the Living Dead - I think Joah and HEH have pretty much summed it up. Zombies look great in B&W, and happy endings are for the birds.
"Jaws" and "Open Water" - Both of these prey on primal fears - the unseen, deep water, and being eaten. The first scared me when I was younger. The latter rekindled that fear - especially toward the end.
"Blair Witch Project" - watched this at the theater a week before going on a weeklong backpacking trip in Colorado. Great timing! A few other buddies on that trip had also seen it. Genuinely spooky given the right circumstances.
"Alien" - another one that I first saw when I was younger, and still one of my favorites. Another example of how keeping the enemy unknown just heightens the chill factor.

That said, THIS MOVIE (http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/thereaping/) looks pretty trippy. :D
I agree with you hextrip...the ring is scary and Texas Chainsaw was absolutely the scariest movie i saw when I was a kid...had nightmares so much. my Mom would not let me watch another scary movie until I was in my teens.

I love a good horror Movie!!!
I always liked those movies that give you that creepy 'hey, that could really happen' feeling when it was over like "Saw" and "Misery". I am also a big fan of the "The Sixth Sense".
The one time I can really remember a movie scaring the He!! out of me was at my 13th birthday party we rented among other things "Poltergeist". From that viewing my love of horror movies was born.
Give me a good zombie movie any day! A good boarded up in the house or mall zombie movie not most of the crap remakes of today. Anything by G.R. (except "Land of the Dead"), I even liked the remake of "Dawn of the Dead". "28 Days Later" was one I liked and "Resident Evil" was Okish. To me though a good scary, creapy zombie movie doesn't have well trained marines or security personel, it has everyday guys and gals caught in macabre, surreal circumstances and trying to survive on wits alone.

...keeping the enemy unknown just heightens the chill factor.
Yeah, that's knowledge that most modern movie producers seem to have forgotten. The Village was a great suspense movie for me, mostly because you only saw the monsters about twice.
Because you can get used to violence, blood, and gore, but you can't really get past your own imagination :)

Nooblar,
I couldn't agree more! I am not really a 'gore' fan so much as I am a fan of that little tingly feeling you get on the back of your neck and that cold feeling you get in spine from the anticipation (your own imagination) of what is to come.
A great horror movie builds those moments up and down a gets you with a scare on the exhale.

My wife can't stand to watch it. she leaves the room if I put it on. There is something just too real about this movie. It hits so close to home, with our fears of what our leaders are capable of doing. Glad I found some else who likes it. :toast: :gb:

The ending was a shocker for me but was cool how they ended up in the tar pits at the end with all the other extinct animals was classic.

I have to admit that I have never seen the "Miracle Mile". As I was reading your posts my mind was thinking "Green Mile" and I couldn't understand why that would be considered scary, but now I am with you.
Miracle Mile = looming nuclear war right??

BannisterA guy oversleeps and misses his first date with a gal he met earlier that day. He goes to the diner where she works, but she's not there. He talks to her coworkers and patrons a bit and then goes to the payphone to call her. When he gets there it rings and on the other end is a military guy panicking. He is stationed at a missile sioh and is trying to get a hold of his father to warn him of a nuclear attack. The movie ramps up from there as they try to decifer if this is the truth and how to escape the city before the bombs hit.

One more thing you should know is that from the point of the phone call on the movie is in real time. This is one of the major factors adding to the tension. Don't watch this movie on TV with commercials added they just ruin it.

Huh. What's scary about nuclear bombs? Particularly if you're in the direct target area. You get hit, you die, the end. I'd be more scared of stepping on a land mine, or suffering some other assault that had a better possibility of severely maiming me than killing me outright.

Well I dont know about the best but I think I saw the worst the other night called the Hazing. Teens/college kids stuck in a haunted house, one guy is possessed by some evil spirit, something about a gateway to hell, hilarity ensues.
