I dont know how probable this would be but it would be great if a national heroscape tourney would start up. Have state tourneys leading up to a national final. It would be a great way to get gamers together from all across the nation. Im sure it wouldnt be that hard to have Hasbro back the tourneys up if they got enough support for them.
Just a thought coming from a small town guy looking for Heroscape to go somewhere.
I have a group of friends who play together. and there is just four of us and it would be great for us to get out and stop beating on each other for once.
Let me know if this is a good idea or not.

Have a specific map that everyone uses and bring a pre-draft army. I believe Heroscape would get a lot of publicity for this too.
Maybe this is too big to do but hey its worth the idea.

it's called gencon.
Also, you might want to look in the Events section and see that several large scale tournies just took place this weekend.

I could definitely see something like this happening, but there are sooooo many things to consider. At the same time, I'm not trying to say it's a bad idea at all. I do know, though, that the Heroscape team (Craig, Rob, and all those affiliated with making Heroscape) have a great passion for what they do and want to expand the game to greater levels.

I'd rather just do the Reverend's Mega Heroscape idea :D
Or some kind of large tournament in teams.

Aw, thanks, Nooblar.
But, seriously, you guys need to start checking out the EVENTS section here. And put your location in your profile so people can contact you to play. I did that and have a new friend for the effort. And I hope to see you at GENCON next year. I'll be a newbie there, but I'll be there.

Yeah, like my fellow Rev says, put down your location. Remember, state abbreviation first, then town/area (see mine for an example). This lets other search for people from the same area in the member list.
Because OPrime put down his location (actually it was on frapper, but same point) he and I connected. He came over to my place for the Massive Heroscape Throwdown. We started connecting, and then decided to join forces and host the Boston tourny in Sept, which neither of us would have done solo. The Boston tourny inspired Ninja to call for the RI tourny on National HS Day, and OPrime and I are planning another tourny in January!
That's how it gets started . . . .

I guess we would need to split things up when we saw who would actually be able to come to something like this. The real question is where would it be held and when? When is the big one for me, i can travel almost anywhere is the timing is right. My work requires me in the area alot.

it would be fun if we all arranged to meet in nebraska or some central state for a national HS showdown!

I bet I could totally go for nebraska, I've got family out there, I cant even beilive we've started talking about this. Maybe we could do it over the summer? I doubt we could do it relatively soon, because not enough people would know.

Start up an Events thread about it, that will get the people on the boards updated to it. But yeah, next year is a definate, not this year.

I actually attempted to get this idea implemented months ago, before Gencon - getting a quasi-"official" West Coast champion by pitting NorCal vs SoCal (I know it would have precluded Portland HSewrs who couldn;t make it to the NorCal tourney qualifier) and then hoping the West Coast winners could make it to Gencon to crown a quasi-accepted Heroscape World Champion.
Alas, it didn't come to be, and it likely will not come to be, due to simple travelling difficulties.
Basically, it's a lot easier to talk about it and agree it's a good plan, then it is to have it become reality.
And IMO, there's no practical way it's gonna happen until Hasbro sanctions tounrament rules, provides tournament support at regional game conventions, and changes their marketing strategies to embrace more than 8-12 year old boys.

Well, I'm roadtrippin' next summer, so if the Rev wants to get MEGA HS going, I'll plan around that. I think just about everyone here can agree that it's easier to plan for big events, especially months in advance.
Good forethought with the quasi-stuff, Reap. Now we just need to get more people on board; a much easier task after so many people experienced National HS Day, right?

From a practical standpoint you are right Reaper. I could take a week and travel and do something like this but family or job would come a-calling somehow and make me not able to go. And I could see that with the majority of the people here. Most are married with children and full time jobs. But if a few people want to give it a shot, I am definately not going to discourage them and I will definately give what support I can to see it through, as I think it would be a blast to participate in.

I know a guy whose "job" is to compete in the CCG Versus tournaments. He actually makes a living at it. Or has been doing so for the last year.

Heroscape doesn't have the kind of corporate support that allows for that kind of fan involvement in the game at a competetive level. :(
Oh, well. It's just a missed opportunity for them - one that likely wouldn't pay off big enough dividends to make it worth their while.
For us, it means more than just a missed opportunity, though. :(
Heck, maybe it's better that Hasbro doesn;t foster an Envoy program and support game conventions (other than Gencon, of course) - who knows what the game we all like would become if they did support it like other game companies support theirs.
And Craig sure stepped up with the prize support for the National HS Gameday, so that's a big step in the right direction.
I wonder what secret advertising budget he had to hide that expense in.

I tell you this, when Rob and Craig pull their collective fingers out and give us some Redcoats and Royal Engineers, I shall purchase the biggest set of speakers I can find, fill an iPod up with patriotic British nonsense, and when I make the finals of the first International HS tournament, you shall all feel that ancient pride of the Motherland as the dulcet tones of Vera Lynn seduce you with "Land of Hope and Glory".
Failing that, I'll sing myself and win by default as the last man standing ;)

It has messed up that (IMO) valuable HS Event rganizer resource - please seperate this thread again, back to page 2, @ TyG17's first post in it.
Thank you, for all Event organizers.
That stickied thread needs to be as concise and direct and applicable as possible to provide the greatest benefit to people thinking of running HS events.

Yes, I merged this, why?
Because the parent topic has a ton of useful information that Reaper has been trying to get people to use. I used some of it for my Tournament day, and I'm working with part of my group on getting a little handbook together for others in our area that want to do this.
To address some of the difficulties that have been mentioned I'll say a few things.
Most all things start small. It used to be pulling teeth for Elstree and me to get even 1 or 2 people to come over and there were almost no Seattle area players in the forum. Last week I hosted the 1st ever Seattle HS Tournament and there were 16 competitors. And there are enough that want to get together monthly to make it viable. This is good growth.
Enough sets? I don't think this is that hard. If you have enough people to play, you should be able to get together enough sets for them to play on. Sure, it is great if there is 1 source for everything, but it isn't that big a deal for 2 or 3 people to agree to bring terrain to an event. I had planned to be the only terrain provider to keep it simple, but our numbers exploded at the last minute and some other people stepped up and brought sets to help out. Heck, between JandarSunstar/Sexecution and Bunjee/Elstree, there are 11 master sets, 8 castle sets, and at least 6 of every other terrain type. Kenjib and Brotharon regularly offer up their terrain for events in our area. I've never had a problem getting enough terrain together.
Finding space has always been the largest pitfall for me. But once you find a couple places, it seems to work out pretty well. Currently the spaces I have access to have a map space setup limit of about 10 (this would be really really cozy) in the smaller place and 16-20 in the larger venue. Hours of operation are more often a problem for me. Our larger venue can probably hold 16 2 player maps, possibly more, I keep forgetting to look it over that well.
More later.

Ok, split done. As a note, anyone interested in doing a tourney or large event should start by reading through the stickies in the Events area for tips. One of my group is taking a number of the tips and materials we need and making a binder that we can have handy for our events.

Thank you thank you, bunjee (well, for putting it back ;) )
I hoped that a sticky in the Events forum would be enough for serious, interested HS organizers to get to.
I hope that thread (full of collected information and tourney resources) could be found, without having to bump it every 2 weeks or so - I'm trying to keep it "pruned" so to speak, so someone interesated in running a HS event can just read 1 or 2 pages to give them everything they may need, instead of having to sift thru too much idle discussion about stuff.
Bunjee - what do you think?
Should the sticky Event Guide thread be bumped, or is being a "sticky" enough to alert interested organizers?
(Obviously important reference threads shouldn;t be required to be in the recent posts list on fear of being ignored....) :?:
(By the way - do we need that "Tournament Rules" thread stickied anymore?
It's really just discussing the concept - I moved the one good resource in there (GB's sample tournament rules) over to the first post in the Event Guide thread.....
bunjee
October 24th, 2006, 03:28 PM
Being a sticky should be enough for people to find it, though I found it interesting that it took so long for anyone to mention said stickied threads in this thread.
Tournament rules could probably be unstickied and cross posted to the event organizers thread. I'll do that.

Well, I encourage you not to leave the North out of this.. and by North, I mean the TRUE north!
There isn't a tonne of Canadians in here yet, but in Southern Ontario (which is about 40% the pop. of Canada) the game is only recently picking up like wild fire. Toys R Us can't hold onto their stock anymore, and the big stores like Zellers and Walmart now sell it as well. Local hobby stores as well now have all the sets instead of just wave 1. We had a tournament in Ontario, thanks to Atmospro and JAZZ for the location. I also know that things are moving out in western Canada too for some more tournaments.
I feel the same and would love to see tournaments leading up to International tournament. I don't think we have enough in Canada to justify having our own yet and pitting Canada vs. US, but I see no problem including Canadian regions with the US regions.
However, I do agree that this whole idea might not be realistic without the support of Hasbro, but maybe it can be realistic, and maybe we just have to dare to try.
So, East and West can fight over 2nd place, but the North will be bringing home the gold!!
Jormi_Boced
November 14th, 2006, 02:44 PM
I agree with the north taking home the gold, but it will be the Great White North of the United States. Minnesota and Iowa is what I am talking about:)
