Running Tally of Extra Players
In addition to the official registration, this section is for me to keep track of posts made here that mentioned other people who may come:
it will be me +2
I'm sure my friends and I are up for it (3-6 of us). <one is MattserTruckRally, so 1 extra for sure and 3 extra maybes>
Better make the count me, 3 more definites and 1 maybe. This just turned into a minivan trip!
here's the current solid number. I will be bringing along only one person with me for the tournament. I don't foresee that number changing.
It will be me + 3 others. Hopefully none of them back out on me.
Okay, Madhatter is confirmed so I'll be bringing him, and maybe 1 more
----------------------
Tourney Rules
Set Up
-Each player is responsible for bringing a 500 point army, order markers, dice, and wound markers (you may want to mark your figures.)
-No customs or proxies (custom repaints of official figures are allowed.)
-No sideboarding.
-No house rules.
-A copy of the official FAQ and 2nd edition rules will be available.
Maps
1. Soulrazor Canyon (http://www.heroscapers.com/download/index.php?dlid=93) (Official Hasbro map)
2. Forsaken Waters (Official Hasbro map from MS)
3. Arctic Divide (http://www.heroscapers.com/download/index.php?dlid=161) I am declaring normal ice and heavy snow. (UPC map)
4. Meat Grinder (modified for tourney play) (http://www.heroscapers.com/download/index.php?dlid=185) (KOTDT #100)
-Starting zones will be the standard 24 spaces. If your army does not fit in the starting zone you must chose which figure(s) will not be in play.
-Glyphs: A group of glyphs will be placed glyph side down next to each map. Each player will pick one, then place it glyph side down in their designated spot. After starting zones are chosen, the glyphs will be flipped glyph side up. The pool of glyphs is:
[list:2ca31fb938] +2 Move Glyph (Valda)
+1 Attack Glyph (Astrid)
+1 Defense Glyph (Gerda)
+1 D20 Glyph (Lodin)
+8 initiative (Dagmar)
Heal Glyph (Kelda)
Summon Glyph (Erland)
Gameplay
-Swiss format.
-Each game will last up to 60 minutes.
-When time runs out players will finish the current round. The winner will then be determined by scoring who has the most points left on the board. Example of scoring: 1 Krav Maga left alive would be figured as 100 points for the army card divided by 3 squad figures= 33 points per figure, with decimals rounded.
-Dice towers are acceptable. Any dice that do not lay flush at the end of the roll will result in a re-roll of the dice in question.
-Rychean, netherspirit, and ChaosChild are the designated judges to decide all rules questions.
Prizes
-First place will receive a custom trophy by CupidsArt, in addition to their first choice of available prizes. . .
-Second place will receive a custom Silver Mimring Trophy Dice Box (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=3556&start=65) by funrun, in addition to second pick of available prizes. . .
-Last place receives a custom-designed "Fodder" T-shirt by CupidsArt
-"Dice Dungeon" Deluxe Dice Tower (http://www.vixentorgames.com/dungeon1.html) by VixenTor Games (InfinityMax)

-(3) Wave 5 Soulborgs
-Wave 5 Elves

-A $5 entry fee per person will go towards prizes and food.
-Each participant also needs to bring some sort of prize. This means everyone leaves with some prize of their choice, usually something they preferred to have over the prize they brought. The prize can be worth as little or as much as you want and does not have to be Heroscape related. Prize ideas range from unique D20s to CDs to HS expansion packs. Expansion packs with common armies will be opened and separated by army to create extra prizes.
Food & Drinks
-Free donuts, danishes, and donut holes from the neighborhood bakery will be provided in the morning. Come early to help setup or register yourself early and you'll be rewarded with your pick of flavors!
-Yottaquest offers snacks for purchase on-site at below vending machine prices: cold water and soda, candy, gum, and other snacks.
-Yottaquest's owner encourages us to visit local eateries for lunch, which includes: Chinese, 2 family diners with burgers and Cincinnati style chili, a bakery, and more. Fast food is a short drive.
-No alcohol is permitted, but may be consumed afterwards at Vincent's Sports Bar .[/list:u:2ca31fb938]

Hey Funrun, I am interested in all tourney's, especially in Ohio, but Alas I will be in Costa Rica, where it is 90 in the shade, I saw Snow for the first time in 14 years, and that is enough for me for a few more years.
I am sure you will get enough people for a tourney. We only had 9 people and it rocked. If you would have won our tourney you would have received cash, a certificate for $ , and a piece of gold, now that is something to write home to the folks about.

I have decided we will each bring and play 500 point armies. I have added this detail to the first post.

I just totally rewrote the first post of this thread, so go read it. The gears are now in motion to pull this thing off and there is potential for some cool things at this event. I will post about it when I can confirm them. Also, the 9 registered members is deceiving because I just tallied us at 19-23 people with the extra people mentioned in the posts here!!!!
noodles, I meant for that affirmative category to include maybes, Cinci in Dec is either a possibility or it isn't. The real tourney registration thread will be where you make the definitive decision and confirm it.

I'll go down as a 'maybe' - it's a four hour drive each way, and would be my first tourney, but I think it would be worth it for the experience, and to meet some other HS players.

What about Skyline? Will there be Skyline available??
I understand the Skyline addiction, but luckily it turns out to be sort of like smoking cigars. If you have too much, you'll never want it again. I used to love Skyline and then I started working next to one. After a couple months of eating now and then I came to hate it. Not sure why.

The weather will definitely play a factor in my decision. With the number of interested people and the prize table that's starting to form, this is looking to be a tourney worth a long drive. The best part is that when everyone brings a prize everyone leaves with a prize, and usually it's some booster pack you had been wanting but couldn't find. I hope with the weather part you weren't expecting snow on Dec. 9?! Please register yourself in the count above, it doesn't mean that you are committed. There will be a separate thread to officially register once I get the location/ date details set.
Last night I saw my extra Mimrings and huge bottle of silver metallic paint and thought "I'll make a second place trophy!" Mimring now looks awesome completely covered in shiny silver, but I am undecided if I should add any colored details, and what kind of base to mount him on. . . pics to come when I am done.

I just finished making the second place "Silver Mimring Trophy Dice Box." Images and full descriptions are now in my gallery here (http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/thumbnails.php?album=283). I have discovered this thing functions 3 different ways:
-Second place trophy
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10083/normal_box_closed.jpg
-Storage box for all the accessories one person needs to go to a tourney.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10083/normal_box_open.jpg
-Quiet and compact dice rolling area.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10083/normal_box_diceRoller.jpg
I am quite pleased with myself as I have never made something like this before. I painted Mimring, cut off his feet anchors, bought a plain wooden box, distressed it, painted it several times, cut felt to match the sidewalls, then glued it all together. Actually I like it enough that I may just have to come in second place just to keep my box !

Hey Funrun,
Looks like you will host the biggest Ohio tourney yet. I just might send a piece of gold for the winner, since all the previous Ohio Tourneys have had gold go to the winner.
Sorry I will be in sunny costa rica at the time.

So perhaps for the benefit of those people, I should order a party pack of those hot dog chilli covered things that I ate once and thought was the most pathetic excuse for a hot dog meal ever.
Any takers for the party pack?

In High School my spanish teacher would give out extra-credit if you stole something from a Skyline Chili and brought it back to him. Basically he'd give you extra credit if you stole something from anywhere he liked to eat and brought it back to him. He said it was the Latino way. :) He said if they didn't want you to take it they should leave it lying around. His office was filled with silverwear, napkin dispencers, cardboard standees, etc.

We had a similar teacher but his extra credit was WW2 stuff. If you gave him something from WW2 along with a 1 page description as to it's importance to the War you got 10 points added to your final grade at the end of the year.
It's the only reason I passed his class (with a 98, 40 points being from several bullets and a few medals), :D

I will pick up whichever two we do not already have, and if per chance 3 of these 4 we do not already have, I will get those 3.
I am planning on getting one or two other HS items, so would you rather have another castle/ duplicate FG, or should I get Tundra, wave 5, or something else? Let me know within the next 90 minutes!
If they have more Einar, Vydar, Ullar FB or something else you need, does anyone want me to pick something up for them to pay me back later?

Well there are a few choices, the 1st being a raffle where names would be drawn from a hat, the 2nd being a D20 anyone who hasn't gotten a prize yet rolls and the highest # gets to pick next.

In Dallas we always have a final ranking for each person; you just start with #1 and work your way to the last guy, then work you way back up the ladder backwards. The first guy gets the best prize; the last guy probably gets two prizes, but all the really good stuff will probably be gone.

Hey everyone I have an update on the tournament.
I went to Yottaquest today and spoke with Matt the owner. First Matt is a super super nice guy and we really couldn't ask for a better host. For all the Cincy local scapers I suggest that we all visit Yottaquest a whole lot more. Now to the update.
1. The place can defnitely accomodate 30 people. In fact they had a 30 person tourney 2 weeks ago. They have about 8 game tables set up in the main store area all the time and they have a sizable room attached to the back of the store that could accomodate another 6-10 tables.
2. The store is pretty cool, you will probably find some non HS stuff to buy. However, unlike the SWOGG tourney our space isn't limitless, so don't block out the payin customers.
3. We can start setting up at 10am possibly earlier.
4. Fairplay rules will be enforced in the store. Have fun, play loud if you want, but no swearing. Keep it clean and shake hands after the games. Cussin will get you kicked out, its a family store.
5. If you want to bring in some special treats its ok. But pop, water, and chips are all for sale at the store, and since we aren't being charged a rental fee it would be courteous to buy those things from Yottaquest. Its all reasonably priced.
6. We can order out for food if we want. The owner encourages us to visit the local shops for lunch and dinners. There is a bakery next door and burgers, chilli, pizza, chinese and assorted other restaraunts all within walking distance.
7. Lots of parking behind the building, and by the looks of traffic its better to park there than on the street anyways.
8. Yotta quest is totally wanting to advertise, so we may get a couple walk ins wanting to play. Bring some extra figures maybe we can get a new addict....I mean player.
9. We are all Yottaquests guests at their store. I think it would be cool if we painted a figure and maybe put it on a plaque commemorating the tournament and gave it to the store. Maybe some of you creative types can think of something.
Thats about it. Its going to be loads of fun :!:

I just got back from Yottaquest and it is an awesome tourney locale! The store is really all about hosting tournaments more than it is a store that sells things. The owner is a great guy who knows how to run tournaments from experience (they host about 5 per week.) He will have himself plus 2 people on staff to help run our tournament.
For food, we are set. I believe he said his cold soda cans are 75 cents, bottled water is 50 cents, candy bars are 50 cents. The store itself is in a cute little downtown area with Chinese, a bakery, hamburgers, and Cincinnati style chili in walking distance. It is fine for individuals to bring food in from other places, but he really preferred I didn't bring in food for everyone. With the variety available in the area I think it is best everyone is on their own for lunch whenever they aren't scheduled to play. Also, a 60 second walk away is a great little neighborhood sports bar (Vincent's) with pool tables and I think foosball. I have been there once before, so we may be having a little post-tournament celebration there. :)
The store itself sells fantasy games and strategy games, no anime or comics, so Heroscape is really in the right environment there. He doesn't sell much Heroscape because Hasbro doesn't make it very profitable for game shops to sell, but I did note a Tundra pack sitting on the shelf.
I am still actively working on a few other things for food, prizes, and giveaways

Aw man, you would have won the prize for farthest distance driven! Hopefully you can make another tourney somewhere near you soon.
Yes, I'd like to start going to tournaments. I've pretty much either been in school or studying for tech certifications for the past decade, and just this year I finally hung up my cap and gown and called it quits after my 12th cert and my master's. I actually have free time on my hands now, and it is quite amazing what having a life is like. So, if I notice a tourney and I'm available, I'm going to do my best to make it. I was actually really looking forward to this one, since it would have been my first real tournament, but hopefully there will be some other big ones that pop up. Hey, maybe yours will turn into an annual one and we can all meet up again next year...

What does "no sideboarding" mean?
This means that an "option" army won't be allowed.
Where you make a 400-500 point army and have 150 points worth of figures that you could move in or out of your main army as you meet different opponents (kind of like a side deck in TCGs/CCGs)

Can someone clear something up? When this says 500 point army, are we going to be drafting back and forth or do we just say, "This is my army."?

Gameplay: Swiss format to be controlled by special software
Please explain 'Swiss format'. I'm not sure what it means, exactly.
I'm cutting and pasting this from the forst page I found when I searched Google for "Swiss format". Glad you asked cuz I had the same question.
What is Swiss Format?
To understand a swiss tournament, you must first understand what "swiss style" is. It's actually very simple:
Round one:
All players are paired randomly.
Round two:
The winners of round one will play each other, the losers of round one will play each other.
Round three:
The players with 0-2 records play each other, likewise with the 1-1s, and the 2-0s.
Round four:
The 0-3s play each other, as do the 2-1s, the 1-2s, and the 3-0s.
Sometimes, however, it is not possible to pair players with exactly the same records (due to drops or draws), so you may have to play up or down a record.
After an amount of rounds set at the beginning of the tournament (based on the number of players), the player with the best record wins. As more than one player will have the same number of match points at times, a series of 3 tie breaker systems are applied:
1. The total number of match points earned by opponents that defeated the player. The purpose of this tiebreaker is to benefit players who lost to tougher opponents.
2. The total number of match points earned by opponents that the player defeated. The purpose of this tiebreaker is to benefit players who had tougher opponents in general.
3. The sum of the round numbers in which the player lost. Each round number is squared prior to being summed. The purpose of this tiebreaker is to benefit players who lost in later rounds. All other things being equal, losing in later rounds is an indication that a player played tougher opponents in general because they were paired against players with like records.
Finally, after the last round, instead of the best record winning, the top 8 players (sometimes top 16, sometimes top 4) go on to a single elimination tournament in which they play each other seated by their tournament ranking at the end of the swiss rounds. 1 vs. 8. 2 vs. 7. 3 vs. 6. 4 vs. 5
Swiss is designed to let the top players meet in finals instead of round one.

Playing the game without drafting is not nearly as much fun for me, so I only play in tournament situations here and there. No sideboarding is a deal breaker for me. I'd love to go, and I'm sure the day would be fun and the folks friendly, but I don't want to make the long trip out there to be dissapointed in the actual gameplay.
I find that in most tourney or pre-assembled army situations I tend to bring the same handful of army types, trying to bring something that can handle all takers. By not being able to use the true specialist troops or really work a draft and see how my opponent is planning, I find there are a lot of troops that don't get used and everything gets sort of homgenized, and thus some level of fun goes out of the game for me.

It is a chance to play competitive Heroscape with posters from the forum; a chance to meet people, game, and have fun. Just say you can't make it; don't put the tourney down as being beneath your participation because of it's format.

It should be an army that's able to beat any other army on any map, and most HS tournaments are structured to determine which army/ player does this best. You can draft armies all day long at home with the same people you always play against, or you can bring a pre-built army to take on new opponents on four different maps with a pool of random glyphs. Even if you play 6 games you will get a different challenge here every time. Why any player would not see this as a fun challenge is perplexing to me too.

What's a good way to prepare for a tournament? I suppose it would help to look at some of the armies in the competitive armies forum and try to match mine against those. Jotun, the best way to prep for a tourney is to play your army as many times as you can. Find opponents and just mix it up with as many different armies as you can find. Play against some melee, play against some range. Play against some squads, and play against some squad-killers. Just play.

I'm not making excuses, and I'm not putting the tourney down or saying it's beneath me. I think it's great that folks are organizing tourneys, and it sounds like there will be a lot of fun times to be had. Good stuff.
All I'm saying is that the game format is not for me I think....it would be like being a baseball fan and driving a couple hundred miles to play softball. Similar games, both are perfectly legit and good sports, but if you were a baseball fan you might be dissapointed that nobody was playing baseball. That's all I'm saying. The no sideboarding thing is what decided I wasn't going. I was thinking about it and thinking about it and finally decided to make other plans as I didn't want to go and not have a good game, despite the oodles of fun I might have just hanging out before and after. If I'm going to an area specifically for a gaming tournament the game is the thing, despite anything else going on. I've pulled out of Halo tournaments because I didn't like the map selection or game list. This is no different.
If the tournament were in Philly or the surrounding area I'd be there as long as I had the time free, basically no matter what the format was, because it wouldn't cost me much of anything to attend at it would be nearby. But it's not....it's a good drive away and involves a night in a hotel and loads of gas money and food money. If the game's not the type I want to play, why should I put out all that?
Again, I'm not putting the thing down at all.....good lord why must I always defend myself like this......the tournament sounds great, you're all good people, I love you, you love me, we're a happy family.......

I can tell you boys this much..undestimating funrun on the battlefield or cutting her slack becasue she is a girl will only net you a loss.
You need to bring your A game with her and then hope for some good fortune as well....
Me? I am just shooting for second....:D
(yeah right; I am kicking a$$ and taking names, Texas style)

Well, trash talkers beware. You will be facing the best Einar player from the General Tourney at GenCon. :)
Ok, I was the only one to play Einar but, I did win 3 games.
So prepare yourselves for the awesome, and dare I say, death defying feats of Parmenio and his Sacred Band.

Ha, I like soup!I had to read this three times to realize who you were and that you were talking about CupidsArt here! Most people on this forum don't go by real names, plus we have a banned member with username "Jason" whose posting style could have easily been read into your comment
I'm glad to see that your embarrassing loss to me last night encouraged you to signup for membership here

(yeah right; I am kicking a$$ and taking names, Texas style)Ah whatever, you sound like truth before CA's tourney saying that I am something to be feared and then I didn't do squat. Although I had not played a competitive game of HS in months then, and now. . . well, we will see what I can do next Saturday .
Besides, you want second so you can have my trophy box!

Almost all the tourney details are ironed out now! I just made this update to the first post:
-Rychean, netherspirit, and ChaosChild are the designated judges to decide all rules questions.
I think the only outstanding info left to fill in is what is going on with those other prizes I am working on . If anyone else sees something I left out please let me know.

Note to self: Practice saying "Do what the card says, not what it doesn't" in an authoritative voice. :D

To add some trash talking...You can all fear the awesome power of the hounds. Yeah, I like to lose, but it's still fun. Tiberius, if you need to use some other commons or anything like that if they're not going to be in use by people from my group I can let you use them for the tourney. Oh yeah CA, do you still have that hat, I've felt naked watching the games without it.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I'm looking forward to playing your army...if we get paired up in the tourney that is, otherwise I wouldn't be upset about not facing Q9.

Thanks for the offer Weesel, but the kids I am bringing along (from the youth group at church) have thier armies picked out for the most part. One is using a frenzy army and the other wanted something based around the cowboys. The other, just told me he might be called into work, but if he comes he is going to try out a sir Gilbert army.

I finally got the potential final piece of my force from an ebay auction I won almost a month ago - time for some furious play testing! (More likely: I read the army card, go "yeah that works", and see how it plays on Saturday)

Well with only a few days to go and no word from my last hope, I'm gonna go ahead and say there aren't any other prizes I am working on :(. The bright side is that the current prize table is really awesome as-is, and CA has an impressive first place trophy surprise for us all!

If everyone brings a prize, we probably wont need to split up the booster packs, right?
