I am a nerd, and I watch tons of crap. I love movies, and I watch an average of about 20 per month (ones I haven't seen already). The aren't all great, but some are pretty good. I just figured this could be a place to chat about movies that can't command an entire topic (Star Wars, Matrix, stuff like that). So here are a few movies that I love, that not a lot of people do.

Pallbearer, yes, the one with David Scwimmer.

Safe Men, a very funny comedy with Sam Rockwell.

Zero Effect, with Ben Stiller and Bill Pullman.

Check them out if you haven't, and drop a few gems of your own.

If you can get past the French anti-American message in this film, The Wages of Fear is a great film.

"What the @*^% do we know?" - quantum physics, neurobiology, ESP, theology, and even a little story thrown in to tie it all together.

"Primer" - Argh! Time travel movie you have to see like 3 times before actually understanding it. Anyone who says they figured it all out the first time is frakin lying.

"Cosmos: A Personal Journey" - Ok, not a movie but a mini-series circa 1980 by the late, great, Carl Sagan. Changed my life and got me into science. To this day, it endures as insightful, touching, and inspirational.

I don't know that any of them are worth mentioning, but I get a kick out of watching the really crappy movies that the smaller local stations play in the middle of the night on weekends. I don't know, there's something about truly aweful movies that I really enjoy.

That said, there is one movie that I had never heard of that I saw and enjoyed. Dark City. I can't remember ever hearing about it, but I liked it a lot. When I saw it there was a part of me saying that it was a low budget Matrix knock-off, but it was released before the Matrix.

Come to think of it Knock Off was one that I enjoyed. It's a Van Damme movie, so I had very low expectations. Again I never heard of this one, but I enjoyed it. It seemed like they were trying to take Van Damme's worn out schtick and turn him into something more like Jet Li or Jackie Chan in some ways, but I think they did a pretty good job. I enjoyed this one, but that might be because I wasn't expecting anything from Van Damme.

"The City of Lost Children" is a pretty cool weird Euro fantasy movie.

"Heroes Shed No Tears", which I think was John Woo's first ever film, is the greatest action film ever.

I second Velenne's "Primer" - it is a pretty interesting take on time travel. It IS very confusing, and I've only seen it once - my friend (a real life physicist) explained most of it to me, but yeah, 2 or 3 watchs is recommended.

And for gods sake "Cube", if you liked Dark City (see Agent M's) or, in fact, have an IQ over 80, you will love this movie. Part horror, part thriller, part sci-fi, part prison-break... It's got it all. A must-see.

I love, love, love City of the Lost Children! I really enjoyed Delicatessen and was very much looking forward to City of the Lost Children when I heard it was coming to video, and, as rarely films seem to do, met my hyped expectations.

I'll take this opportunity to plug one of my favorite filmmakers: Wim Wenders. Sorta fits the "obscure" moniker - but only marginally so, I mean he has made a movie with Mel "Crazy" Gibson.

Love all of his movies, but especially Until the End of the World, Wings of Desire/Faraway, So Close, and the bookends Paris, Texas and the recent Don't Come Knockin'

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension is a great movie with Peter Weller and John Lithgow (and Jeff Goldblum). Sci-Fi, action, comedy, and other stuff mixed in, it doesn't spoon feed the audience the plot. It assumes that they are intelligent enough to figure out some things on their own.

I loved Dark City. We used to do "bad movie" night in college and we rented that and were sorely dissappointed when it was actually a good movie.

I happen to love music set to animation wether it be an amateur music video to some of the more out there professional numbers. In the spirit of the halloween season here is a french number that is awesome. Keep in mind this was made by the French so its a bit more risque than what I think you'd see in the Americas.

http://spoki.free.fr/

Apart from that have to agree that Dark City ROCKED! We also loved Battlefield Earth, Strange Days, and a bunch of other ones that would probably only get a B rating from most these days.

Another movie that was horrible and obscure was Evil Toons. The best part was when Robert Carradine from Kung fu shows up in a cameo with the necronomicron wrapped in a paper bag and gives it to the playboy bunny wannabe's in the haunted mansion, saying special delivery!

Time Bandits, anyone?

Not a thriller, mystery, or battle movie. Just a fun family movie. A young boy is kidnapped by dwarves who pop out of his wardrobe. They have stolen a map of the Universe and are running away from the Supreme Being. Funny movie.

Safe Men, a very funny comedy with Sam Rockwell.

A very bizarre yet funny movie ... be sure to stick around after the credits for an additional hilarious scene.

That said, there is one movie that I had never heard of that I saw and enjoyed. Dark City.

An all-time fav with Rufus Sewell, Keifer Sutherland and Jennifer Connelly!!!

Jeramiah Johnson with Robert Redford, Great book as well.

Another all-time fav!

A few more obscure yet should be seen:
• 13 Moons with Steve Busemi, another bizarre yet funny movie
• The Cooler with William H. Macy, Maria Bello and Alec Baldwin
• Happy Texas Another with William H. Macy, starring Jeremy Notham and Steve Zahn as escaped convicts mistaken as gay Lil' Miss Beauty Pagent consultants
• Dreamcatcher An excellent Steven King
• Secondhand Lions with Haley Joel Osment, Robert Duvall and Michael Caine
• Eurotrip A teen comedy, but it just hit right on my funnybone
• DEBS Catholic schoolgirl lesbian spys; What else need I say?

Is "the cube" really obscure? I mean, it did have a sequel?!?

Chung King Express A great Hong Kong movie that experimented with synchronicity and dual storylines. Whilst some of the acting and cinematography shows inexperience, the plot and sense of mystery more than make up for it.

Der Untergang (The Downfall) A recent German film detailing the last few days of Hitlers life. This is a film not to be missed. The BBC bought the rights in the UK and it aired here about a year ago. A superb snapshot of a historically accurater and depressing 1945 Berlin.

Westworld Not sure if this counts as obscure; but Yul Brynner as a crazy android gunslinger in a western theme park gone nuts is just great. Imagine most of us have seen it though.

Sorry never saw Mulholland Drive. Never really cared for David Lynch. Hated Blue Velvet (If you haven't heard my rant about that one let me know.) Dune was an abomination when you consider the excellent source material. "Twin Peaks" (and its movie) were over rated. Should I go on?

Maybe not an obscure film, but its value may have been overlooked due to the ages of time...

Months ago, my sister lent me Mildred Pierce starring Joan Crawford. Just last week, I managed to get it in the DVD player and view it one early morning.
What a classic! It's a murder mystery and drama with a tinge of film noir.
What a gem! Although my wife (who viewed it a day later with me) and I figured whodunnit midway through the film, it was still a very enjoyable gem!

I read this thread from the beginning and found it odd that I posted about "Don't Come Knockin'" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0377800/) on October 21 of 2006 - I don't think I saw that until early 2007, but maybe I'm way off. Got to see it at a screening with Wim Wenders speaking about it afterwards...pretty good night :)

But it reminds me of probably the most obscure movie I've ever seen, and I would love it if someone else knows what I'm talking about: What It Is by Crispin "George McFly" Glover. Drove up to Minneapolis from Iowa City to see it when I found out that morning that Crispin Glover was screening it at 7th Avenue. I don't often call movies weird, but this one certainly was. All the actors had Down Syndrome, except Glover (though...) and at the time I was working for adults with disabilities. Perhaps it was the synergy, but I enjoyed the movie an awful lot...and not sure what that says about me  Plus, got mr. glover to sign one of his books after the show and chat inanely with him.

EDIT: nevermind, it was March or April 2006 that I saw Don't Come Knockin'. Oy, time is slipping away...

EDIT II: and as long as I'm here, might as well mention my favorite Crispin Glover involved movie (nope, not Charlie's Angels - though I did see that specifically because he was the Thin Man): Rubin and Ed (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102817/) (co-starring Howard Hesseman of WKRP fame :) ). It is my third favorite Blank and Blank movie, right behind Harold and Maude (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067185/) and Ted and Venus (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103057/)

AHA! while I was IMDBin' all those links I did come across What It Is--or rather What Is It? (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118141/) (the slide show that was before the screening was the book "What It Is...And How It Is Done", the very book he drew a spindle in) though IMDB lists its release as 2005 and the cut I saw was in 1996 or 1997 (hey, if I can't remember when I saw Don't Come Knockin' can't be sure of something from over a decade ago :D )...gotta hunt that down.

EDIT III: Ain't the internet great: Crispin Glover on the Tom Greene show talking about "What Is It?", sorta. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9j7ISnwaPg)

EDIT IV: I'm outta control: Da Fonz keeps Crispin "Roach" Glover in school (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GL0ew-k46bg)
EDIT V: Wildly careening: Colonel Crispin corrupts Alex Keaton (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7PdnFuhDnI&NR=1)

Night of the Day of the Dawn of the Son of the Bride of the Return of the Revenge of the Terror of the Attack of the Evil, Mutant, Alien, Flesh Eating, Hellbound, Zombified Living Dead Part 2: In Shocking 2-D

Obscure and hilarious. Known simply as "The Movie" by a certain circle of my friends.

OMFG! The title alone makes it worthy of my Netflix queue.

My contribution to this thread is Ice Pirates (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087451/). A really cheezy 80s flick about space pirates in a time when the most precious of all treasure is... ice.

I remember watching this movie over and over again on HBO when I was growing up.

Dude, I loved Ice Pirates as a kid. Watched it all the time...

My contribution is a movie that is so horribly bad, it is addictive. Watching it, you know this is the worst movie you've ever seen, yet, you can't stop watching.

The movie?

MOTORAMA.

Just know, if you watch it, I did warn you...

You guys have mentioned some great ones, especially Dark City, Time Bandits, Near Dark (a vampire movie where no one ever says the word 'vampire') and Equilibrium.

If you've never had the pleasure, please check out Hard Boiled, starring Chow Yun-Fat and directed by the untoppable John Woo. This has got to be the greatest action movie ever made. They even made a 'sequel' of sorts- it's called Stranglehold and is a video game for Xbox 360.

Another one that I love, and has never been released here in the States, is Berserker starring Kari Wuhrer (sp?). It's about immortal vikings who keep being reborn over and over to fight each other, made immortal by vampire-like Valkyries with glowing gold eyes. No, really.

Does Titan A.E. count as obscure? I really liked that when I was younger, and I can't find our VHS copy anymore. It's not a classic, that's for sure, but still very enjoyable.

Indeed a classic. We went to the theater to see this epic movie!
:toast:

My favorite movie and a bit of an obscure, French film, The Wages of Fear, from 1953.
This is a tense, existential classic.
Four European guys down on their luck in South America take a risky job opportunity from an American oil company.
They're to drive two trucks of Nitroglycerin hundreds of miles to put out an oil fire. It's a classic well worth seeing.

It was later remade by William Friedkin in 1977 as Sorcerer. Another essential movie to see.

I'll add in a movie to the list- I finally managed to score a copy of Six String Samurai (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118736/) for my collection. I'd recommend it as an oddball movie with a great soundtrack. I love the character concepts.

It's obscure in my book. A.E. scared the bejeezus out of me when I first saw it at around five. But I love it now. I'm sure I have a copy of it around here somewhere.

If you liked Top Secret check out The Kentucky Fried Movie, my favourite film by the writing (and directing) team of David Zucker, Jerry Zucker, and Jim Abrahams.
A lot of my favourite films on this thread.
If you haven't seen the animated film adaptation of Richard Adams' Watership Down, do. Probably not obscure but a great movie soon to be lost in history I think.

I saw Ice Pirates in its first run. As we exited the theater one of my friends said "Well. That was well worth a $1.50." Another friend said, "But we paid $2.50." My first friend said "Exactly." ;)

Anything by Hayao Miyazaki is worth a look. Guaranteed to be wierd. Totoro, Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle are all by this guy.

Also this movie called Sunshine. I thought it was a pretty good sci-fi movie.
