Scenarios/Maps Team
Team Lead: White Knight
DeathDoom
Consultant: wulfhunter667
Purpose of the Scenarios/Maps Team
The purpose of the Scenarios and Maps Team is to design the Scenarios and Maps for the Project Pokemon Master Set.
Types of Scenarios
- Classic Scape (we won't be designing any new scenarios for this)
- Pokescape army battle
- Pokescape one-on-one battle (like in the video games)
- Capture that Pokemon!
- Series of battles (with simple evolution rules)
- Regional campaign (with advanced evolution and power up rules)
Scenarios/Maps Team Rules
- any member of Project Pokemon may submit designs for scenarios and maps
- each scenario and map will be evaluated and voted on by the Scenarios/Maps Team
- after approval by the Team, the scenario or map will move to a playtesting phase (TBD)
- once a set of scenarios and maps are generated, the scenarios and maps will be presented to the Project Pokemon team for final approval
- after final approval, PDF instructions will be produced for the scenario
Important Design Considerations
- each Pokescape scenario needs a good storyline
- the more each scenario can build on each other, the better
- scenarios should highlight at least one of the Pokescape specific rules
- the Master Set should include enough scenarios to highlight each of the different Pokescape rules (with the possible exception of advanced evolution)
- W/R/I
- one-on-one battling
- capturing Pokemon
- Trainer Cards
- simple evolution
- advanced evolution (campaign style)
Terrain Allowed
(Thanks to the BoV for some of these guidelines.)
A) General Guidelines
1. Maps are generally not to exceed 1 Master Set and up to 2 terrain expansions.
Keep in mind the fewer expansions a map includes the more likely it is to be used. Submitted maps must state what sets are needed.
2. Use of the Marro Hive as a line-of-sight blocker is allowed with the SotM set.
3. Submitted maps must include build instructions.
4. Glyphs/Items are not required, but any number may be used to enhance a map. Scenarios must state how glyphs/items are to be used.
B) Army-style Battles
1. Maps for army-style battles shall contain exactly 24 hexes of start zone for each player.
2. Start zones must be identified in the build instructions and must accommodate the Marro Hive in some capacity.
3. Maps should be balanced for 1-on-1 competition between two (2) 400-600 point armies
4. Maps should not heavily favor any one special ability to the point that it makes the map non-competitive if an army does not contain that ability (i.e. range, flying, etc.).
C) One-on-One Pokemon-style Battles
1. Maps for One-on-One battles shall contain exactly 1 hex of start zone for each player.
2. Start Zones will be for the non-battling Pokemon Trainer figure only and must be placed so that the Trainer Figure does not create a blockage from one part of the map to another.
3. Start zones must be identified in the build instructions.
4. Maps should be balanced for 1-on-1 competition between two (2) 300-600 point armies.
5. While balanced maps are prefered, theme is more important than balance. For example, a Rock-type gym should favor Rock-type Pokemon and Water-type gyms should favor Water-type Pokemon.
D) Pokescape Campaign Maps
(Rules to come)
Classification of Heroscape sets:
• Master Sets. One of the following may be used as a master set:
o Rise of the Valkyrie
o Marvel: The Conflict Begins
o Swarm of the Marro
o D&D: Battle for the Underdark
• Expansions: Up to two of the following may be used:
o Road To The Forgotten Forest
o Volcarren Wasteland
o Thaelenk Tundra
o Fortress of the Archkyrie
o Ticalla Jungle
• Hybrid Master Sets: One of the following may be used in place of the two expansions:
o Marvel: The Conflict Begins (Except when also used as a master set.)
o Swarm of the Marro (Except when also used as a master set.)
o D&D: Battle for the Underdark

Our Pokescape Scenarios/Maps Team is pretty small, which means more work but more focus as well.
There have been several ideas suggested for scenarios:
The inital Project Pokemon Scenarios thread is here: Initial Project Pokemon Scenarios Thread (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=32550).
Ideas for simple evolution can be found here: Simple Evolution (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showpost.php?p=1102163&postcount=1962).
Ideas for a Kanto Campaign can be found here: Kanto Campaign (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showpost.php?p=1102781&postcount=1978).
Ideas for different types of scenarios can be found here: Types of Scenarios (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showpost.php?p=1111808&postcount=2069).
Rules for Catching Pokemon can be found here: Capturing Pokemon (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showpost.php?p=1114181&postcount=2084). (We probably want to factor in Status Effects as well.)
Rules for Advanced Evolution can be found here: Advanced Evolution (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showpost.php?p=1114196&postcount=2085).

Project Pokemon Scenarios/Maps Team Direction
I'll be honest in that I have no interest in a simple evolution series of scenarios. If there is still a desire to put those together then we'll do them later.
The Kanto Campaign with experience markers, advanced evolution, and permanent Protein, Carbos, etc... (that can be purchased with experience markers--for those Pokemon that don't evolve) can be presented in the expansion waves (although we might do it here). Either way, it is not the first priority.
First Scenario
The way I'd like to run this is to try to come up with a training map that we can use for either the Pokescape army battles or Pokescape on-on-one battles (with switching out of Pokemon).
I'm suggesting something like a Pallet Town Training Field.
This Pallet Town Training Field (or whatever we name it) would be like a BoV map for our Pokemon. It would also serve as the first map of my Kanto Campaign--a one-on-one battle between Ash and Gary.
I see the Kanto Campaign being for 1 to 4 players who are Trainers (and travel together like Ash, Misty, and Brock) and 1 Game Master. The Pallet Town Training Field would teach the new players the basic of Pokemon battling.
Terrain Allowed
But before we can get to the Training Field map design contest, we first need to set ground rules on the terrain.
What terrain is allowable for the Project Pokemon Master Set scenarios?
- should we follow BoV rules?
- should we allow just 1 Master Set?
- Tundra?
- Lava?
Any comments on terrain allowed?

I would suggest that, at least for the master set, we should make a number of maps with various terrain sets in order to allow people with limited terrain to use the set. As well, I think that the BoV format for mapmaking materials is a good idea, but the balancing of map is unnecessary, at least in the campaign.
As for using Tundra, Lava, Road, et cetera, I think they will greatly add to the Kanto campaign, especially the gym battles- imagine Blaine's gym full of fire and lava!

Since BftU is the most recent and probably most available set out there I think we should add at least two maps using just that set, just to make our project more accessible to new scapers.

I agree. I was thinking about that as well.
I think you and I do the most playtesting, so it also makes sense to try to make most of the maps for the Master Set using terrain we can both playtest. What sets do you have?
I have (I've gone a little crazy with terrain):
- 4 RotV
- 2 SotM
- 2 BftU (thanks to that Amazon sale!)
- 1 Marvel
- 1 Jungle
- 1 Road to the Forgotten Forest
- 1 Tundra
- 1 Lava

1-on-1 Battles
I've been putting together rules for one-on-one Trainer versus Trainer battles and finally tested my ideas last night versus my 9 year old son. He really enjoyed it! :D
Rules
Before the Battle
- each player chooses a non-combatant Trainer figure and places the figure on any space in their starting zone
- Trainer figures cannot be attacked or moved by any special powers or abilities. They are treated as solid obstacles for purposes of line-of-sight and moving.
- each player chooses 6 pokemon
- no more than 360 points per team
Starting the Battle
- before placing Order Markers, each player rolls the 20-sided die. The player with the lower roll must choose 1 Pokemon from their team to be their Active Pokemon and must place that Pokemon on the battlefield within 3 clear sight spaces of their Trainer figure.
- the other player then chooses 1 Pokemon from their team to be their Active Pokemon and places it on the battlefield within 3 clear sight spaces of their Trainer figure.
- both players place all their Order Markers on the card of their Active Pokemon
Battling
- only the Active Pokemon from each player's team can be on the battlefield. Other Pokemon are considered to be on their player's bench.
- after revealing an Order Marker, instead of taking a turn with that Active Pokemon a player can recall that Pokemon to their bench (from anywhere on the battlefield) and send out another Pokemon to be their Active Pokemon
- sent out Pokemon must be placed within 3 clear sight spaces of their Trainer figure
- if you recall a Pokemon and send out another Pokemon, transfer all Order Markers to the new Active Pokemon's Army Card. The Pokemon that was just sent out cannot move or attack on the same turn that it was sent out.
- All wounds and Status Effects (and ailments such as Curse) remain on Pokemon recalled to their bench, but benched Pokemon do not suffer any effects or wounds while on their bench. Status Effects and other ailments only affect Active Pokemon.
- if a Pokemon you control is destroyed, you may immediately choose one of your benched Pokemon to be your Active Pokemon and place it on the battlefield within 3 clear sight spaces of your Trainer figure. Transfer all Order Markers to the newly sent out Pokemon's card.
Victory
- the battle is over when all Pokemon on a player's team are destroyed.

- Charmeleon took 1 wound from Curse.
- Team B sent out Scyther
- Team A recalled Charmeleon and sent out Paras
- Paras hid in its start zone
- Scyther took out Paras (it was put to Sleep on its first Fury Cutter attack, but its second Fury Cutter attack took out Paras). Then Scyther fell asleep.
- Team A sent out Charmeleon
- Charmeleon rolled 4 skulls, Scyther rolled 0 shields, and Scyther was out:shock:
- Team B sent out Abra
- Team A recalled Charmeleon and sent out Bulbasaur
- Abra avoided Bulbasaur for a while, and inflicted 1 wound, but Bulbasaur took out Abra
- Team B sent out Pikachu (with 3 wounds)
- Bulbasaur took out Pikachu
Team B wins with Charmeleon (2 wounds), Bulbasaur, and Squirtle left.
PS My son loved it so much he's upstairs doing another battle by himself!

That's awesome. There's a lot of similarities between this and the TCG, but that's at all a bad thing. Basically we're recycling the system without power creep or blind purchase. Great report!

Why is Battle for the Underdark listed as allowing it to be used as a master set and an expansion set on the same map?
White Knight

Why is Battle for the Underdark listed as allowing it to be used as a master set and an expansion set on the same map?
There were two thoughts behind this:
1) The BoV allows for maps with 2 Battle for the Underdark sets.
2) The Battle for the Underdark Sets are the most readily available terrain sets right now.
I don't know what sets people have, or even who will be using these scenarios, but I know we want them to be usable by as many people as possible.
But the sets are not set in stone (despite being on the first page). I'm willing to change the allowable terrain if anyone has any suggestions.
Maybe we need to start designing first...

I still like the "Wild Onix" scenario. We could probably start with that. It's simple and will definitely use a BftU.
A wild Onix has been sighted in a cave north of here. You arrive at the cave with the intention of catching it, but you’re not the only trainer after the prize.
Setup.
Each player drafts 300 points worth of units. Player 1 places his figures in the red start zone. Player 2 places his figures in the green start zone. Place the Wild Onix on the yellow spaces.
Special rules.
Onix is considered to be a neutral figure.
Neutral figure: Both players may place order markers on a neutral figure’s army card. Order Markers should be placed to either side of the neutral figure’s army card so that they are not accidentally revealed as the card changes hands throughout the game. When an order marker is revealed on a neutral figure, that player controls that figure for the duration of its turn. After that turn that figure becomes neutral and is not controlled by either player. While a figure is neutral all players treat it as an opponent’s figure. A neutral figure cannot pick up or activate any treasure glyphs, but like all figures, it can stand on a treasure glyph.
Victory conditions.
Player 1 wins when all of player 2's figures have been defeated. Player 2 wins when all of player 2's figures have been defeated. After five rounds the Onix flees and the player with the most points remaining wins.
This is meant to be played on a small map made with dungeon terrain with a few scatter water hexes. Shadow and stalagmites are to be kept to a minimum. Onix is a two hex figure and must be able to move around a lot. Please keep that in mind when drafting a map. If you have a map that meets these requirements please post it to be considered for this scenario.

Wild Onix Scenario
I like the idea of an Onix scenario, but I'd really like to wait on it.
1) We don't have Onix designed or playtested yet
- with no Onix card, we can't playtest the scenario yet
- with no Onix card, we can't accurately plan the map
- we can't accurately determine points
Another thing to consider: Can the players actually catch the Onix?
If not, why not? If they can, what kind of Pokeballs do they have--regular or Great Balls? We also need to know how many points Onix is worth so we can calculate its Catch #.
Later we can work on the Onix scenario and work it into the rest of the scenarios. I'm thinking that maybe Prof. Oak tests the young trainers by asking them to go in and capture the wild Onix that's rampaging in the Pallet Town Sea Cave. Or maybe he needs their help and gives them each Pokemon to use.
Current Focus
Right now I'd like to work on some scenarios that we can playtest right now (and even use for playtesting some of our future Pokemon).
I'm thinking of two BoV type maps:
- the Pallet Town Training Field
- the Pallet Town Sea Cave Training Gym.
The Pallet Town Training Field would use one RotV and maybe an expansion set. The Sea Cave Training Gym would use one or two Dungeon sets. They would be used for both army battles and 1-on-1 Pokemon type battles and would introduce the W/R/I and switching out concepts to the players (and Trainer cards).
DeathDoom

I can go ahead and try to do a quick VirtualScape of the Pallet Town field. 1 RotV should cover that, if we just want an introduction to the PokeScape system, right?.

Pallet Town Training Field Unofficial Contest
I'd like to get 4 or 5 submissions of these maps for us to vote on.
Submission Guidelines (and these are negotiable):
- use 1 RotV Master Set (and possibly 1 expansion set)
- 2x start zones of 6 spaces each
- fairly well balanced (so neither Trainer has an edge)
- must not handicap water Pokemon (such as Lapras) too much--need to provide plenty of water for the water Pokemon
- only pictures right now--build instructions can come later
- Pokemon glyphs/items are optional

Great looking Maps there WK. Just by looking I like Submissions 2 and 4.
The difference between Classicscape and pokescape is we need to design for a balance between water and other pokemon whereas they look for a balance between range and melee.
While we still need to look for that balance, the sheer volume of water pokemon also demands this. I don't know how they'll play out, but I'm just saying, I like the looks of those two.

They are pretty similar, but one has shadow and the other has a larger lake area. In both, there is a single hex passageway from the outside water/shadow to the inner lake.

Wild Onix Scenario Map Unofficial Contest
A wild Onix has been sighted in a cave north of here. You arrive at the cave with the intention of catching it, but you’re not the only trainer after the prize.
Since Onix is being voted on and will go to playtesting soon, I think we can begin working on the Wild Onix Scenario Maps.
Question: Do we want to use the Pallet Town Sea Cave Training Gyms for the Wild Onix Scenario?
If we choose to make new maps, I'd like to restrict them to 1 Battle for the Underdark Master Set.
Wild Onix Scenario Map Rules
I'd like to get 4 or 5 submissions of these maps for us to vote on.
Submission Guidelines:
- use 1 Battle for the Underdark Master Set
- 2x player start zones of 6 spaces each
- 1x Wild Oniz start zone (2 spaces)
- fairly well balanced (so neither Trainer has an edge)
- only pictures right now--build instructions can come later
- Pokemon glyphs/items are optional

Question: Do we want to use the Pallet Town Sea Cave Training Gyms for the Wild Onix Scenario?
I'm not sure about using either of these maps. Onix is usually found in tunnels that don't feature a lot of water.

I've been meaning to post some maps I have for a Wild Onix scenario, but I wanted to put the scenario description into the .pdf file.
Here is Charder's original idea:
Since the premise of the scenario is to capture the wild Onix, I'd like to use this scenario as a way to teach new players how to capture Pokemon in campaigns. So here are the Capture Rules as they now stand:
Formula
Catch # = point cost/10 (rounded up) + 10
Roll d20 and add ball bonus, status bonuses, and wounds on the Pokemon
A roll of 1 always misses.
Ball Bonuses
Great Ball +5
Ultra Ball +10
Master Ball (automatic)
Status Bonuses (these are just suggestions)
Paralyzed +4
Asleep +3
Poisoned, Burned, Frozen +2
Confused (no bonus)
Onix is worth 150 points right now, and it has 4 Life (for a maximum of 3 wounds before it is knocked out and no longer capturable).
150/10 + 10 = 25 (needed to capture)
To capture Onix, we would roll the 20 sided die and add wounds (max 3) and Status modifiers.
Regular Pokeball
With no wounds, you couldn't capture Onix with a regular Pokeball. even rolling a 20 with +4 if Onix was paralyzed only makes 24 (and 25 is needed).
Great Ball
With no wounds and no Status Effects, you would need to roll a 20 to capture Onix (20 + 5 for Great Ball).
If you can put 2 wounds on Onix and put Onix to sleep, you need to roll a 15 or greater (15 + 2 wounds + 5 Great Ball + 3 Asleep = 25).
ONIX SCENARIO
I suggest that we give each trainer 10 Great Balls, and make the goal of the scenario to capture the Wild Onix.
Pokeballs are used instead of attacking, so on your turn you would have to decide whether to attack Onix, place a Status Effect on Onix, attack your opponent's Pokemon, or try to capture Onix.
Any comments?

What happens after you capture him? The scenario is over? You add Onix to your Army? He goes into a pile of unused figures?

Wild Onix Scenario (White Knight's Version)
An angry wild Onix has been sighted causing damage inside the Pallet Town Sea Cave. Its tunneling is threatening the stability of the cave--and the seawater is injuring the wild Onix.
Professor Oak wants to capture the Onix and release it in Mount Moon where it can be with more of its kind. He has asked two of his young trainers to go and capture the Onix. To assist them, he's allowing each trainer to borrow up to 6 of his Pokemon to battle with. As a reward for capturing the wild Onix, Professor Oak will give that trainer a rare Dratini to keep on his or her journey.
Who can capture the wild Onix first and win the prize Dratini?
Setup.
Each player drafts up to 6 Pokemon totaling 300 points or less. Player 1 places his Trainer figure in the blue start zone. Player 2 places his Trainer figure in the green start zone. Place the Wild Onix on the yellow spaces.
Trainer figures cannot move during the scenario. Follow the rules for campaign battling.
Special rules Option 1 (2 players, no Game Master).
Onix is considered to be a neutral figure.
Neutral figure: Both players may place order markers on a neutral figure’s army card. Order Markers should be placed to either side of the neutral figure’s army card so that they are not accidentally revealed as the card changes hands throughout the game. A neutral figure cannot pick up or activate any treasure glyphs, but like all figures, it can stand on a treasure glyph.
Special rules Option 2 (2 players, 1 Game Master).
The Game Master controls the wild Onix. Both players and the Game Master roll for initiative and battle like a 3 person battle.
Victory conditions.
A player wins when he or she has captured the wild Onix.
If the wild Onix is destroyed, or all Pokemon belonging to both players have been destroyed, the game is over and neither player wins.

Two more Pallet Town Sea Cave Training Gyms:
(I don't know how well they're going to play, but I wanted to try something smaller with some height and character.)

I really need to build this, for reasons related to your project or not.

After building these, I found out that the cave passageways underneath were just too short for anything but the rats and wolves.
Try this version:
(it has more height and a more room through the caves.)

Made a few more changes:

The caves underneath are wider now, there is a solid passageway from one start zone to the other, and the water passageway goes almost from one side of the board to the other.

So here is what we have for the Onix scenario right now:
Wild Onix Scenario
Uses 1 BftU Master Set
Setup
Each player drafts up to 6 Pokemon totaling 300 points or less. Player 1 places his Trainer figure in the blue start zone. Player 2 places his Trainer figure in the green start zone. Place the Wild Onix on the yellow spaces.
Trainer figures cannot move during the scenario. Follow the Pokescape rules for 1-on-1 battling.
1-on-1 Battling
Starting the Battle
• Before placing Order Markers, each player rolls the 20-sided die. The player with the lower roll must choose 1 Pokemon from their team to be their Active Pokemon and must place that Pokemon on the battlefield within 3 clear sight spaces of their Trainer figure.
• The other player then chooses 1 Pokemon from their team to be their Active Pokemon and places it on the battlefield within 3 clear sight spaces of their Trainer figure.
Both players place all their Order Markers on the card of their Active Pokemon
During the Battle
• Only the Active Pokemon from each player's team can be on the battlefield. Other Pokemon are considered to be on their player's bench.
• After revealing an Order Marker, instead of taking a turn with that Active Pokemon a player can recall that Pokemon to their bench (from anywhere on the battlefield) and send out another Pokemon to be their Active Pokemon.
• All sent out Pokemon must be placed within 3 clear sight spaces of their Trainer figure
• If you recall a Pokemon and send out another Pokemon, transfer all Order Markers to the new Active Pokemon's Army Card. The Pokemon that was just sent out cannot move or attack on the same turn that it was sent out.
• All wounds and Status Effects (and ailments such as Curse) remain on Pokemon recalled to their bench, but benched Pokemon do not suffer any effects or wounds while on their bench. Status Effects and other ailments only affect Active Pokemon.
• If a Pokemon you control is destroyed, you may immediately choose one of your benched Pokemon to be your Active Pokemon and place it on the battlefield within 3 clear sight spaces of your Trainer figure. Transfer all Order Markers to the newly sent out Pokemon's card. The new Pokemon can attack on your next turn.
Capturing Pokemon
Each player starts with 10 Great Balls. Great Balls add 5 to your 20-sided dice roll when trying to capture a Pokemon.
On a player's turn, after revealing an Order Marker on a figure, instead of taking a turn with that figure you may instead try to capture the wild Onix. The wild Onix can be anywhere on the map. First, discard a Great Ball item. Then roll the 20-sided die and add 5 for the Great Ball bonus and add any other bonuses for wounds and Status Effects on the wild Onix. If your roll is greater than or equal to the required catch number you capture the wild Onix. If your roll is less than required, the Great Ball breaks and fails to capture the Pokemon.
Formula for catching wild Pokemon:
Catch Formula
Catch # = point cost/10 (rounded up) +10
Roll the 20 sided die and add ball bonus, any status bonus, and wounds on the Pokemon.
A roll of 1 always fails.
Ball Bonuses
Great Ball +5
Ultra Ball +10
Master Ball (automatic capture)
Status Bonusus
Paralyzed +4
Asleep +3
Poisoned, Burned, or Frozen +2
Confused (no bonus)
Example for capturing Onix
Onix is worth 150 points, and it has 4 Life (for a maximum of 3 wounds before it is destroyed and cannot be captured.
150/10 + 10 = 25 (catch number needed to capture)
To capture Onix, a player would roll the 20 sided die and add 5 for the Great Ball bonus, add number of wounds on Onix (max 3), and add any modifiers from status effects on Onix. If the combined number is greater than or equal to 25, the wild Onix is captured.
Special rules Option 1 (2 players, no Game Master)
Special rules Option 2 (2 players, 1 Game Master)
The Game Master controls the wild Onix. Both players and the Game Master roll for initiative and battle like a 3 person battle.
Victory conditions
A player wins when he or she has captured the wild Onix.
If the wild Onix is destroyed, or all Pokemon belonging to both players have been destroyed, the game is over and neither player wins.

Any comments?
We still need 1 or 2 more Onix Scenario maps to playtest.

HELP NEEDED--Kanto Scenario Maps
My sons and I have been working through the Kanto region using the Project Pokemon rules:
Project Pokemon (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=31460)
As posted in that thread, we've done:
Pallet Town
Route 1
Viridian Forest
Pewter City (and Gym)
Route 3
Mt. Moon
Route 4
The Cerulean City Gym is designed and we're going to play it sometime this weekend.
But there are a LOT more maps in Kanto to make, and I'm looking for others that would want to help design the maps. In a small way, this is a continuation of Project Pokemon.
What maps need to be designed in the near future:
- Route 24
- Route 25
- Route 5
- Route 6
- Vermillion City
- SS Anne
- Vermillion Gym
I get all my information from:
Fire Red/Leaf Green walkthrough (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Appendix:FireRed_and_LeafGreen_walkthrough)
Red/Blue/Yellow walkthrough (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Red_and_Blue_walkthrough)
I put a lot of work to make the first few scenarios look official, but I'm not asking for that for this project. All I need are
1) map build instructions (or, better yet, a Virtualscape file)
2) a write-up detailing trainers, items, and any special information for that map
Send me a PM, or reply to this post if you're interested. Or just submit a map.
