View Full Version : GenCon Scape events 2011: If we build it, will you attend?

Hey guys, I said from the get go that I was planning on running events at GenCon in 2011, despite the discontinuation of Heroscape.

The time frame for event submission is drawing very near, but before I submit I want to try to get an idea if we will have the same turn out.

So all of you past and possible future GenCon Scape event attendess, please vote this poll.

Thanks!

I'd love to go to GenCon someday. :) I hope when I do get the chance to go later down the road that there will be some kindly soul wanting to play a game of classic scape.

I appreciate it guys.

I am just trying to determine if I should scale back in size.

We are having events just a matter of how big we decide to go.

Keep those votes coming!!!

I'll be there trying to play in many Heroscape and Summoner Wars events, as always. 8). This year I might spend some more time in the hall or just hanging out, but honestly the only games I play and want to keep playing are those two so nevertheless I will be there (hopefully my dad, and even more people, will attend with me).

I'm planning on attending my first GenCon.

That's awesome, you'll very much enjoy it. Any heroscaper must attend GenCon to get that community warmth feeling, even if Heroscape is now discontinued.

Well, to my knowlegde, unless someone decides to run Heroscape at Gencon other than Rychean, this will be the last year. But I'm pretty sure some guy will pick run it instead.

I'll be there for sure. I'll be doing a couple of events, though I'd like to devote more time to the dealer hall. I'll try to fit in two Heroscape events and a Summoner Wars event if possible.

If by some miracle I'm actually at GenCon this year, I'll play in at least 2, and hopefully more. Since I've never lost a Summoner Wars battle**, I'd want to play in some of those, too. The couple guys that come with me would play in the Main Event at least.

Hope to see you there, Killer. I know it is tough to really know this far in advance. I really was just trying to get a feel for the climate.

I probably should have made the poll show who voted for what. I can't be sure that the people who did vote were truly past or future genconers...but I was sort of hoping for something better than a 50% yes and 25% no.

It is still early but that reinforces the idea that a scale back is probably warranted, maybe down to 32 maps rather than 40.

I went last year and I'm going again with the same group of guys (well, Mr Wookiee instead of Mr Migraine) and we'll be predominately playing heroscape, although this year we may not do as many (maybe just 1 less) but we'll still do a lot, as I know I want to go to the dealer hall as I hardly went at all last year. I'll definitely be there though, and I hope it lives on for one more year after this!

I'll be there, for sure, the entire time. I'll probably miss a couple events so I can hit up some publishers for review games, but beyond that, I'll be getting my 'Scape on, big time.

Ok. So a few questions because the gencon site is hard to navigate.
1. How much is it for the week pass?
2. Is it REALLY in indianapolis? (Way far away, but probably
would be worth it)
3. Cheap hotels?
4. Sweet prizes?

Yes.

The others I don't know about (but I'm betting hotels jack up their rates for GenCon).

1.) It was $68 last year, I believe
2.) Yep, downtown Indy right next to Lucas Oil Stadium in the convention center.
3.) You will have to do some leg work but I believe there is lodging at a discount to GenCon goers, though I wouldn’t go so far as to call it cheap. You have to secure it through the GenCon website when housing opens up.
4.) I think so. We make custom HS dice every year, with at least one set available in each event. Also, I heard from a little birdie that we may get our hands on some long ago discontinued product....Maybe, not 100% sure yet.

Count me (and at least 3 others) in Rychean. I was going to help Retlaw set up for Gencon last year, but it was too short notice. I can do so this year if you need me to as I live in Indianapolis. As long as I know in advance to get time off work I'll be there. I can also help run events. I hosted/ran 10 events in Indianapolis last year, so I'm more than comfortable with it if you need me.

When do you decide the actual tournaments for GenCon?
Event submission opens tomorrow but I already have a rough schedule of the events we plan on using. (some old, some new, and some borrowed; none are blue)

I just need to drum up some of the descriptions and set the number of allowable participants. That is the reason for this poll, so I can estimate how large I should make the events.

Now I need to find a way to get my wife to allow me to go. I consider it next to impossible, though that's what I said last year and I was able to get down there for 2 days (and still fail to win any dice ). If I make it this year, there will be no Vipers, baby. I'm in it to win it.

Event submission? Please explain -- is that when you take ideas for GenCon tourneys, or when we can actually sign up for them? I'm assuming the first, but this is my first time to enter GenCon, so I'm clueless...

Now, when do we actually get to sign up for HS events? I know for GenCon in general starts on the 23rd, but I want to sign up asap for HS so I can enter all or most of them...

Event Registration isn't until May 1st, 2011.

Event submission is just that, the Event Organizer (me) has to submit the events for approval, placement, and scheduling. Phase 1 of Event submisison started Friday, 1/14.

I will unveil the lineup this weekend even though they won't be approved yet. I think it is our best lineup yet with some new twists and new events. Maybe seeing the event list ahead of time will sway some to go ahead and make plans to join us.

Here are the results of last year's GenCon (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=31715).

I don't have all the results there, but from what we do know:

Raelin without Q9 or Rats won 2 events and placed in another.
Rats without Raelin or Q9 placed in 2 events (won zero).
Q9 without Raelin or Rats placed in 1 event (won zero).
Q9/Raelin without rats won did nothin'.
Q9/rats without Raelin won 1 event and placed in another.
Raelin/Rats without Q9 did nothin'.
Q9/Raelin/Rats won 1 event and placed in another.

Meanwhile, Heavy Gruts won 2 events, 4th Mass won 2 events, and events were won by knights, 10th, stingers, and greenscales. Some crazy guy even won an event with Jotun.

We have enough sets to run Win-a-Lava & Win-a-Tundra events, the exact same way we did the win-a-waves in 2006 and 2007. These events will be single elimination, 8-player mini tournaments that run at the same time as the regular events are running. An enterprising person could enter more than one of these through the course of the Con or if doing poorly early in a regular event, could drop out to jump into a win-a-lava/tundra event.

It does two things: It creates more chances for you guys and increases revenue for our area. The cost of doing these events has gone up as GenCon has added some expenses that did not exist last year. I almost have to run the win-a events just to keep from upping the price of the standard events.

There will be opportunities to get these sets without having to be the top dog in a standard tournament.

So there is one item regarding the event line-up...

Well, I guess I'm playing to win, then...

Do you play any other way Mr. Q9, Rats, Raelin?

Your forgot Firestorm. That should just about cover it. ;)I started reading these posts, then I got distracted by my Utgar General Wars trophy. You know, the one I got by playing Tor-Kul-Na and Phantom Knights.

Sorry, what were we talking about? ;)

I'll let Jotun know that while he's throwing my 4 sets of Gen Con dice.

Oh yeah? Well, I can get 4th place like no one's business, so I guess I'll be finishing right behind you guys with my Vipers or Goblins or something else stupid.

Awesome Ry!

I'm going to enter both, hopefully, at least the Lava one since I don't have that set.

That is the place. You have to buy badges to attend. All events require you to have a badge. Events go on sale May 1.

"Events go on sale" meaning... You have to pay for each tournament you participate in? (Or is this included in the 4-day badge?)
(Anything else I should know about Gencon? Pre-registration for tournaments, registering your army, etc?)

Yes, every tournament has an entrance fee (generally $8 or so). You can buy them through an online checkout system (once it goes online).

And not just Scape events. Any event you want to participate in, you need to buy a ticket for.

Well, exhibition events are free, these are mainly in the exhibition Hall, many vendors will have games set up to try out for free and you might get some swag to boot. I will be there with a minimum of +2. Hoping for maybe +4 or more. Great line up of events. I highly encourage everyone to make an effort to attend. Do not miss out on Rychean's last event. I am sure there will be more 'scape at future GCs but will we ever see an event list like this again? Attend at all costs! You will love the 'scape, the con, and Indy. See you in August... peace

Posted poll Origins 2011 - If we Build it - will you come? (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=34535). Please let us know either way, and if you are most likely coming, read the OP and PM weesel99 (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/private.php?do=newpm&u=164) if you want to get on on the convention discount.

I'm planning on attending my first GenCon.
This will be my first time and I would very much like to go.
Yup... ME TOO. I just sold my house, so I'm hoping that there will be enough money left over after the closing and move to a new domicile, that I can attend my FIRST ever GenCon. Yes, I do want to participate in some HeroScape events, but I will want to try out other gaming venues as well.

Ry ~ What does a first-timer need to bring with them to Indy (Figures, Terrain Tiles, Dice, Order & Wound Markers, all of the above, etc.)???

You need to bring figures, order markers, wound markers, dice, cards, and any other marker needed to field the army you are going to play.

Terrain/Maps and glyphs will be supplied for each event.

Just curious - does the competitive scene (at least at GenCon) boil down to 3-4 different lists that just play to counter one another?

I am not sure I understand the question. There are 12 different events at GenCon, each with its own variant of play.

I think you mean are there only 3-4 different armies that people use and the answer is NO. Out of 32+ people in each event almost no one brings the same army and the top 5 or so are usually completely different. Check out last years' results (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=31715) to see the variety.

That's super reassuring. I actually had an account here before, but I can't remember the email or login info. :) I'm excited for GenCon and to (hopefully) be part of it. I went last year and just took in the awesome. This year, I think I'll be pretty much playing HS most of the time, ha. I'm hoping there's a few 21+ people who might enjoy some "enhanced" HS later on in the evening, haha. Gotta love hotel rooms. 8)

E: And R˙chean, I guess I'm used to Warmachine, 40k, Magic, etc where people are typically playing specific armies/combinations/decks/whatever that just produces results against EVERYTHING (Magic and Jund, 40k and IG or Fatecrusher, WM and lolNemo). Sorry for the confusion. :)

THEN welcome back. One of the guys I know coming from Philadelphia is a bar tender, so I'm planning to get a room close to his... at least with in crawling distance.

Hi Everybody,
I'm really really hoping I can get my Dad to bring me and a friend to Gencon this year and if I do go it's 98% for heroscape! But if I wanted to participate in the tournaments how do I get information on those? And is there an age limit? I know we provide our own troops and cards and all that fun stuff, but what point armies do you use? Is it all completely official heroscape so no customs? And how do I find out what the different tournies are going to be/which ones I can participate in?

Well, when is it scheduled for? And precisely WHERE would help, because if it's close, we'll probably be there, but if it's far, there's no chance for us to go. I have a small club that is rapidly growing. We might like to attend the next GenCon. If we can make it...

Where? when?

http://gencon.com/2011/indy/default.aspx

I already have the answer I was looking for as far as whether or not to move forward with the events.

The events are a go.

I will get the other thread updated (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=34461) with more specifics before the event tickets go on sale, May 1.
