View Full Version : Marvel:Reinforcements Arrive - Never To Be Released (Photos)

I stumbled across these photos of the unreleased Marvel wave the other day and didn't know how many people on the site have seen them. I'm sorry if these are old and have already been seen.

Picture of all ten figures:

No photos of the Punisher or Super Skrull. Sorry.

None of the photos are mine; they were found at http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/31003/heroscape-marvel-expansion-set-the-reinforcements (http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/31003/heroscape-marvel-expansion-set-the-reinforcements)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Background Information: The Reinforcements Arrive Marvel expansion set, as seen in these photos, was first shown alongside The Conflict Begins master set. When The Conflict Begins was released, many wondered when the expansion was also going to come. Then Heroscape was given to Wizards of the Coast and it looked unlikely for the Reinforcements Arrive to ever be realeased. Then Truth interviewed Wizards (can be found here (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=21610)) and they told him that Marvel was going to be released.

Marvel/Licensing Questions:

Is Marvel staying with Hasbro?
WotC: Marvel, yes. The Marvel booster wave is going to come out - our engineers are working on it now. We don't have a date for it yet, as it wasn't as complete as Wave 8 when it transitioned.

Are Marvel waves going to be released the same way as regular Heroscape, with four packs in a wave, large expansions, and terrain expansions?
WotC: Marvel waves are 2 packs per wave.

Does this open up some more leeway for DC Comics to sneak into the MARVELSCAPE line?
WotC: We're definitely releasing the already revealed expansion. But, I wouldn't expect DC Heroscape any time soon.

Will WoTC puruse other licenses like Marvel? Will we see Star Wars HS and the like?
WotC: We're looking at other potential licenses that could be brought into Heroscape.

Does new control mean that Heroscape will be further leveraged as an open combat-mechanics system?
WotC: We've talked about it, as Heroscape's such a good game system. I'd love to hear more thoughts about this in a little while (probably "ways to expand Heroscape" is a good topic for another thread, if there isn't one already).

It once again looked like Marvelscape was going to continue, but then Wizards dropped Heroscape completely, without ever releasing the promised Marvel wave. And this is where we are now. No Marvelscape. No Heroscape at all.
This was probably all review for you guys, but it was a nice refresher for me, since I've have given up hope on Reinforcements Arrive a long time ago.

Yeah, this is extremely old news, probably could have found these by some searching. It is too bad Marvelscape didn't take off, the things planned for it were awesome.

They do look great, but Heroclix also has some fantastic sculpts as well. Granted Heroclix has a lot more stinkers too, but that is likely somewhat due to the fact that they have a LOT more figures. ;)

But look at the Heroclix Punisher figure that C3G uses, it blows the Heroscape one away IMO.

The Punisher argument is very valid, and a lot of these have a somewhat interchangable sculpt with with 'Clix anyway.

But those Bullseye, Thing, and Sandman sculpts... oh my!

Plus, a 'Scape scuplt is a meaty, sturdy sculpt.

Why was this thread created? To remind us that Wave 1 was created but will never be released? To show us great miniatures that we will never get to own? These threads serve no purpose but to stir a pot that has been overstirred for years. You are correct that there will never be another official release by Hasbro, but there doesn't even need to be. We have official cards now. C3G does just as good a job as Hasbro ever did. Hell, I think they do better.

I think the original 10 from MARVEL SCAPE were brilliant (except for Iron Man), and they really paved the way for all us upstart wannabe designers. If I was honest with myself, I would probably say that MARVEL Scape has played a bigger part in creating the designer that I am today even more than C3G, because MARVEL Scape was my first and immediate inspiration.

Just to give a specific shout out here, I think HULK is an absolutely genius design, and I will be the LD on the C3G HULK soon, and let me tell you, that is a tough act to follow.

Thanks for the C3G love too guys, and I do agree with you that those "would be" MARVEL figures look absolutely amazing.

They definately nailed Hulk, Captain America, and Spider-man. Other than that though, I think the rest of them are lacking. Abombination and Venom could each use a unique power, Iron Man has nothing, Red Skull, Silver Surfer, and Thanos need a little more, and Doctor Doom neds some more.

I actually like Iron Man. He's an extremely simple design that represents so much about the character. Really the only thing I would ever want to see changed about him is to rename double attack to something more character based.

I agree with you for the most part. Looking back over the times I've played Marvel, Abomination has never been picked because he just looks like a weaker Hulk.

Red Skull and Doctor Doom could handle being a little better, especially the stakes are so much higher in superhero games.

I used to be against Marvelscape because it breaks the game, but with the release of the C3G customs I realize the real reason I never played with the Marvelscape figures: The gameplay with them is not as fun or as a varied as with regular scape. C3G shows that it's okay for superheroes to "break" the game because you will just be playing superheroes vs. superheroes anyway. The fun factor is what Marvelscape is a bit shy on.

This expansion probably has a ton of gag orders on it just like everything else, so it's unclear whether all we have are the sculpts or whether the figures were indeed designed but never released. Maybe if we hope and pray in a few years the gag order might be lifted or have worn off so we can see the stats.

But I don't really know anything about gag orders. Just hoping.

Just so you know, it was very much confirmed that Wave 1 was fully designed and was ready to print, but for an unknown reason, it did not.

Also, Craig Van Ness confirmed in a podcast that there were lots of other MARVEL units being designed as well. It is likely that we will NEVER see wave 1 or anything else on the subject. :(

True and from what I understand there were some great stuff they developed in store for the game. Even the version we got was watered down, if they had done it right it would have blown Heroclix off the map.

Looking at how things like "Handful of Heroes" sell I could definitely see these guys getting picked up just for the sculpts. I think that would have more than made up for the unique only problem.

It's okay if you add "more fuel to the fire"; that's one of the reasons why this thread was made. :D But I have to agree with scapemage921, the warehouse ruin is pretty cool. The only complaint about it is that figures can get around it very easily so you don't see the wall getting knocked down all too often. Also, the concrete and asphalt looks great, even with the classic scape.

I'd love to have seen a bank, apartment complex, office, junkyard, docks, etc. I know you can build these things with castle pieces, but it would look a even cooler if it was created specifically for that type of terrain.

So WOTC specifically said "The marvel wave is going to come out." What happened to that statement? Was it just the closure of heroscape or was there some secondary decision behind the scenes? As for this thread this is the first I have seen that there actually were figures created. I have seen other vague refrences to the missing Marvel wave but I never knew there was ever actually anything concrete.

I wonder what ever became of the prototype figures. I imagine them in a box, along with a laser printout of the first or second draft of their cards, filed on a shelf somewhere in a back storage room of Hasbro, forgotten.

Heck, they're probably mislabeled as My Little Pony figures....

Or, Craig still has them displayed on a shelf in his office. That's a nicer thought actually.

Marvel Set didn't sell very well around here in NC and VA. I am guessing that maybe the lack of sells resulted in a lack of interest by Hasbro - I mean isn't that almost always the case. If it isn't Monopoly, Trouble, Battleship, or big sellers like that, Hasbro just doesn't care.

I would not mind having that Punisher sculpt. I can't believe we have not seen Hasbro/WOTC reuse the sculpts somehow yet. They already spent the money on developing them.

Looking at the wave, it is an odd grouping of characters. They said it would have been two boosters per wave so 5 figures per booster. Not sure what they were thinking for a break down. maybe the 3 FF figures with two villains. Then Punisher, Beast, & Black Panther with the other two villains. Beast being the only X-men/mutant in the group and no other mutants in the master set really makes him an odd ball.

A few hundred dollars to a sculptor for each figure is chump change to Hasbro. They don't care about wasting that kinda of money.

Did you touch up Black Panther? My mini doesn't look that good.

I always touch up my minis. ;)
When they look good, they feel good.
When they feel good, they roll more skulls!

Back in college, my gaming group had a challenge for all of us to make a custom mini/army card to represent ourselves in the Heroscape universe. At the time, I was hosting regular Capture the Flag (http://www.myspace.com/uttylerflag/photos) games on campus. I incorporated my Capture The Flag ninja suit and war paint into my mini.

I wonder If we got enough sigs or something that we could get them to release it! Like chardar said, just the mini's sell! Or, at least could we get them to reveal what it was they had card wise? after all, If they aren't gonna make any money off it, why the heck keep it? But then again, that's probably me being idealistic. Again.

I would guess that due to the nature of the Marvel licensing agreement, they would not be able to release it for free like they did with the Sam Brown card. If the cards they made were to get released in any way, Marvel would demand a paycheck.

I've always wished that one of the designers could, uh hum, "create" 10 custom figures that had some cool names and powers. Like the "Pillowfighter", and "The person You Can Not See", and the "That". I mean, I'd really like to see what cool customs they could come up with... Wink, wink, nudge nudge, know what I mean.

Some other, just saying, possible figures could include the "Matchstick", "Target", "Beach Boy", "The Reacher", "I'm So Blue", "Combo Purple Tights Wearing Guy" and "Kitty Cat Man". Those would be some cool sounding Super Heros that Grishnakh would like to see....

Not sure why any of the guys in the know would want to burn their bridges with Hasbro (and the gaming industry at large) like that.

T'was a joke, nothing more. I've actually worked in the gaming industry for over 25 years. You wouldn't believe some of the things I can't tell you.......

Oh, I'm sure. :-) And you better believe I've asked most of these guys for info about those cards over the years, but I respect the reasons they can't say.
