Hile fellow gunslingers! I didn’t see an existing thread for this so I thought I’d start one.
Universal Pictures has announced a number of movie release dates and tucked away among films such as Larry Crowne and Safe House they have set the release date of the first movie from the Dark Tower trilogy. They expect DT to be in theaters on Friday, May 17, 2013.And:What does Stephen King himself think about Director Ron Howard and his ideas for the Movie Trilogy and multiple season TV series?
Entertainment Weekly managed to get a response from King, who answered positively, stating that “once it (the idea for a Movie/TV adaptation)was raised, I thought at once it was the solution”.

King also likes that Howard will be directing and even compares his directing style as being similar to the way he works as a writer, “we both tell honest stories that have…style and substance but not a lot of show-offy frills”.

Sounds cool to me.

I honestly cannot see these as a good movie. They will have to change way too much IMO.

Maybe, maybe not. It's three movies and who knows how many seasons of a tv series. They should have plenty of time to do a worthy adaptation.

I am skeptical like js, but I am hopeful. A television series could do it justice. Please just make it HBO.

It's not. I think I read where it's NBC.

Doing horror well on TV is hard (with the censors) and King's longer works have, historically been trainwrecks as films (The Stand and Tommyknockers jump out immediately).

I actually liked IT but among those I know, I'm in the minority.

Count me among the less than optimistic.

Yeah, I wasn’t a fan of It. I did like The Stand, though.

I’m hopeful for The Dark Tower. True, there isn’t a bunch of info out yet, but what there is makes me hopeful. So until I hear that Roland is being played by Idris Elba*, I’m going to stay hopeful. I’ll be the first to admit as news comes in between now and 2013, this could change.

That said, I wish it were HBO, too. Or AMC. Or just about anywhere else besides NBC, CBS, ABC or FOX. Well, maybe not the Hallmark Channel.

*He’s playing Heimdall in Thor, anything could happen, and don’t get me wrong, I like Idris, but c’mon!
