Bio - The intersection of Lumber and Vine Avenues doesn’t see much traffic other than the drug kind since the gangs took over. A bloody gang war that held the city in a grip of terror for a harrowing fifteen months left nothing behind but two warehouse ruins from a once bustling business district and a bitter grudge between gang factions that lingers to this day. The local police know that it will only be a matter of time before violence erupts once again.

Why not use a C3G Glyph like the Glyph of Team Up?

Why do the ladders break at the warehouse ruin? The way they are on that side, figure will NOT be able to climb on the warehouse or the top of the ladder. They can't pass through the floor of it, and figures must have something to actually "climb" on to gain elevation, they can't just count spaces in the air as they move up.

OK I got this built and took some pics, but forsome reason they break when I add them in. I'll try the hard way in a minute, but I'll give you the break down now. When I built the map I saw 1 problem, the two ladders on the backside didn't go all the way down to the hex below it. I add a raod piece under the single concrete piece that the ladder should of reached and it solved the problem, and still made the map match. If I can't get any other pics up, I hope I can get those two up.

Overall a very nice map, although I counted to the Glyph in the middle and the closest Glyph to each start zone, and atleast Hal can hit those Glyphs in one OM. From each start zone, the two closest Glyphs are 9 spaces away, I don't know if that's a problem, but I figured I would bring it up.

OK, after seeing Tickles pics, thanks tickle, I can see that I was confused earlier on how the ladders ran up the building. I didn't know they went to the top, I thought they were missing a rung in the middle for the warehouse to go through the ladder itself. But that concern was dismissed upon seeing tickle's pics.
Also, good fixes tickle, and I wonder if it would just be OK to have one glyph in the center of town and let that be it.

There is precedent for a ladder not reaching to the hex below: Crime Alley. It was actually thematic for that map, because that's how fire escapes tend to look. When I asked A3n about it, he said that you simply counted height up the building to the first ladder position.

Thanks for the building and the pics, guys!
As for the ladders, they're supposed to be only 5 rungs high and not reach all the way to the top. That's why there is two layers of castle toppers. The ladders reach the bottom layer, not the top. There's also supposed to be one ladder rung from the building to the Marvel warehouse ruin.
As for Hal reaching the glyph in one move, I don't know what to do. Hal breaks so many maps.
As for the glyphs, I agree with you Griffin and in the instructions on the front page I said to remove all the glyhps and just use Team-Up in the middle.

Yes, since the wording refers to "this glyph". It's just like the wording on the Sentinels and Sinestro Corps Soldiers before they were changed.
And no, I wouldn't change it unless playtesting shows it's too crazy. Sounds fun to me.

Some how I missed that one ladder going to the warehouse. I really hate how VS handels the ladders. As for the whole ladder reaching the top and bottom, I just figured that I would bring it to your attention in case you just happened to miss it. David, as for Crime Ally, I know there was precident, but it had been disscused in the thread and at the time there was no mention here of them not following the "rules". I think I would rather see a ladder reach the top instead of the bottom myself becuase we are generally using city style maps and so when we use ladders, I automatically think of them as fire escapes. I really hope that this becomes a competitive map, I'd love to do some playtesting on it.

I like the idea of having a Team-up Glyph. Why not place an attack Glyph in the middle and place a Team-up Glyph off to the side somewhere that will take at least to OMs to reach? That would draw action to the middle as well as to the side and high areas. It would cause fighting on three different fronts.

It is a pretty strong glyph ... which is why one player getting it earlier and the other getting nothing might end up with one player railroading the other one pretty easily. Hal can hold the glyph for a couple of rounds easily and in that time the team up aspect of it will help his allies run over the competition.

As a map builder, I hate Hal.
So let Hal get the glyph and then attack him. Force him to burn a Battery Marker with his Shield or roll defense and risk taking wounds and losing the glyph. If one team has a 350 point figure, the other team can have some heavy hitters too. The other team can have Wonder Woman and as soon as Hal dashes for the glyph, she can go and Lasso him and beat the snot out of him.
What about Hulk? He's got a pretty good leap to get around too.
Even if you're just talking about Hals treat range, with all BM' on his card, he still only has a range of 5 and easily in reach of an opponent.
Hal's good, but when he chooses not to burn a BM against a 3 skull attack and whiffs his defense roll, it can get ugly. Also, once he burns the BMs, he gets weaker and weaker, so once you force him to burn a couple, he's not quite the threat he was before.

No way! Especially if you ran it with Griff's version of Team-Up. That way we can see how the map plays and his version of the glyph plays.
P.S. Thanks for helping test this map out!

It's not a secret:
After revealing an Order Marker on the card of the Unique Hero occupying this glyph, before taking a turn with that Unique Hero or using any other special powers on any Army Card or Glyph, you may first take a turn with any Unique Hero you control within 8 clear sight spaces of the figure occupying this glyph.

Anyways back on topic, I'm about to run a battle on this map with the updated Team Up Glyph. Armies are:
Team Vigilante:
5th Precinct Beat Cops x5
Alfred Pennyworth
Commissioner Gordon
Batman
and Robin
795 points
Team Crime:
Creeper
Street Thugs x2
Penguin
Two Face
Joker
and Riddler

They are dominating right now, with only two wounds on Batman who is holding the Team Up Glyph and fighting Creeper. Creeper has 1 marker and 4 wounds and 1 squad of Thugs are out. Back to the battle now. I'll see how it plays out. Gordon is pretty fun. I've had a couple chances to move Batman but I declined due to him holding the bonding glyph and allowing Gordon to get up on one of the buildings.

Well, I finished up the test. Team Vigilante won with Robin dead, Batman with 2 wounds and 2 squads of Cops dead. I really thought Gordon would be useless, but he was a ton of fun with the Team Up Glyph, helping move the cops to height.
Well enough about the armies, you guys want to hear about the map right? This was a great map. Pretty simple, but incredibly fun. I was worried that the sides of the roads wouldn't get used but they did. I think I used just about everywhere on the map. And the Glyph of Team Up was very balancing, keeping the action focused on the street. I think Green Arrow would be fun on this map.

On level 2 and just noticed one issue. There are 10 1-hex concrete tiles used on levels 1 & 2 (2 on level 1 and 8 on level 2). There are only 8 1-hex concrete tiles in 2 Marvel Sets. Perhaps the level 1 hexes are supposed to be 1-hex dungeon hexes.
Edit: Whoops - see next post. I see the mistake I made.
davidlhsl
December 9th, 2010, 08:23 PM
Never mind... I see the problem... the hexes on Level 1 that looked like concrete are supposed to be road hexes (from the Fortress set).

Yeah, I call them "roads." I made a similar comment on Savage Land where I get confused between certain tiles (concrete/road, sand/swamp water, asphalt/rock). I had to consult the VS file to catch my mistake.
Anyhoo, I finished the build, and it looks great. Yes, I did use asphalt instead of rock this time (the mistake I made with Rocket Launching Platform that I went back and corrected). I'll keep this on the table so I can play a battle on this sometime later.

I’ll take a stab at a bio:
The intersection of Lumber and Vine Avenues doesn’t see much traffic other than the drug kind since the gangs took over. A bloody gang war that held the city in a grip of terror for a harrowing fifteen months left nothing behind but two warehouse ruins from a once bustling business district and a bitter grudge between gang factions that lingers to this day. The local police know that it will only be a matter of time before violence erupts once again.

Yea, I don't really like the incompleted ladders,
I don't think this was ever answered, but I just realize after waking up why the ladders don't reach up that one extra space to the top: the map already uses the 22 ladder rungs from one Fortress set. Adding the ladder rungs at the 4 different spots to reach the top would require a second set.
Edit: Another observation: If you add another castle set to the build, you could set up a tall building on one end (where one start zone occupies) and create a Times Square map!

I am not interested in adding another castle set, but I was very interested in seeing those ladders elevated by placing a single hex underneath them. That would have brought the ladders to the top of the building.

Looking at my pictures (I have more than one on my hard drive that I took and only posted one), you would actually have to place those hexes in four positions. All of the single hex asphalt tiles have already been used, and any other type of hex would ruin the aesthetic. One possible option would be to lose one of the ladders on each warehouse.
Of course, it's a moot point at this stage; but I don't think the fix would have been that simple.

I'm fortunate to be able to have 3 maps built at a time. I have a baker's rack in my office/scape haven and I keep all my terrain and figures on there. I have 3 pieces of drywall that are small enough to put on the bakers rack, but big enough to build competitive maps. So I keep 2 maps on the rack and 1 on my gaming table in my office at all times.
I like Ruins of Pine Tree Marsh a lot as it has just about everything in a non-terrain specific map. Has trees and ruins for LOS blockers, water, lots of variable height that is accessible to most units easily enough. So I keep that one built all the time.
I also have Hydra Base Gehenna built and at some point will do some testing of the map.
My third option is usually one that is terrain specific. I haven't had an urban terrain map up for awhile and want to get back to that for testing and using Criminal faction more.
