I had cleaned out my garage considerably this weekend and had a nice access path to my comics. I remembered a delicious ad for a game in an Avengers issue(# 208, 1981). So I dug it up and scanned the ad for your enjoyment.
Attack of the Mutants! The picture looked really cool. But I was always wary of comic ads after I bought my 'foot locker' of army men (remember that thread?) Anyway, look at the image: Zombies, 50s-era, Absent-minded professor (note shoelace, badly done tie, sock and sandwich in pockets, etc.), and cool little M-16 toting robots. Did they have M-16s in the 50s???
Take a look:

* Other games in the Yaquinto Publications included:
Swashbuckler
The Barbarians
Beachhead
Demon's Run
Battle
Fast Attack Boats
Asteroid Pirates
Time War
and Shooting Stars!
Any have any experience with any of these games? Particularly Attack of the Mutants?
On BGG they have photos including the interesting board:

Played this one a bit back in junior high school. I remember it as being pretty fun, and sophisticated for what it was.

I'd love to get a copy. Anyone know where to secure one? I've been searching around BGG. The review there gives it a 7. The reviewer first discovered it in a comic book too!
Btw, check out Room 12 ( I think) on the game board! WTF?

I remember this very same ad from the pages of Boys Life. I looked it up a while back on BGG. It didn't get a great recommendation there, but it seemed to be looked upon w/much nostalgia.

Looks interesting, if at least for nostalgic reasons.
Found this:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yaquinto_Publications
The parent company is still in business:http://www.yaquinto.com/
I couldn't find anything on a brief look at the site about ordering the old stuff, but they might still be able to sell the stuff.
EDIT: Nevermind, I just saw you're the highest/only bidder on the game on ebay. Congrats and let us know how it is.

Hmmmm... that's pretty cool looking. A shame someone on BGG.com didn't scan the rulebook and upload it as a file.
EDIT: I see HeH already placed a bid in the eBay auction Hahn supplied... *LoL*

You know guys do what you must. Bid on it. It's my own stoopidness to post a question thread about the game and then find it and bid on eBay.
You're all much more gamers than I . Feel free to bid.
and good luck.

It's still hard for me to read. Reminds me of Robert Bloch's tale, Hell on Earth. Where the college is funding an occult type experiment to bring the devil to Earth.

There was a whole thread about this very topic within the last couple months. I think there were several pictures posted, as well.
I, for one, never did order anything from those comic book order forms... though the illustrated pictures did make the items look quite enticing for a young teen!

I think that's the, "Religious Studies Class"... :D

I found my ad in an Avengers issue. The artwork for the ad was better than the whole blammed issue.
HOW does someone think up a design for a robot (Janibot) like that??? It's classic!

Haha. I was doing my husbandly duty today! I'm finally seeing the light at the end of my master bathroom makeover. I started it last summer (I remember distinctly asking IMax in the HS.net chatroom about the subfloor - wow seemed like eons ago) and today I cut and laid the last dozen or so tiles. I was busy doing that and plumb forgot to watch the auction countdown! But I did stick to my word with my wife - whew.
Thanks guys for watching it for me!

If it IS missing pieces, I'd be happy to scan and send the graphics from my copy.

That's funny, I've been thinking about this game too since purchasing C&C.
Haven't had a chance. Was thinking I might take it to the cabin this weekend and give it a try along with C&C.

I did indeed bring Attack of the Mutants along with me and played the heck out of it! Solo, after the children went to bed, of course.
I had a fun time learning the game and playing both the Mutants, Humans and Janibots.
It's frustratingly difficult to be the Mutant player - you have to be able to smash down doors on a certain die roll and at the end of every round, you have to make a 'Go and Glow' roll. You roll the die for every mutant. If a '6' is rolled, that mutant dies. Very frustrating to get so far into the science building with a decent-sized Mutant mob and only to lose some(or the powerful Mutant Leader) to a die roll.

They have a variant scenario. Rather than the Mutants getting into the Science Building and trying to reach the Tech Room (the center of the board), the scenario calls for Mutants emerging from the portal in the Tech room and trying to reach the outside of the Science Building.
Complete victory conditions have the mutants capturing Professor Applewhite's toothsome daughter and escaping to the outside.
As well, only red mutant chits roll for the 'Go and Glow' roll. Makes it a little easier for Mutants, I suppose.
I have not played a full version of this variant scenario.

Looks like a great game, HEH! How does it play solitaire vs. other players? Seeing all those chits on the game board made me want to break out Titan (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/103) again.

NewB, I've only played it solitaire.
You'll have to play me some time.
:D
At the start of the game, the Janibots can only be by themselves in a room or with one Tech guard (human). Janibots cannot move by themselves. They must be accompanied by a Human in order to leave or enter rooms. So, as the human player, one spends his turns rounding up Janibots before taking on mobs of Mutants. It's a mechanic I thought was smartly implemented in order to give the Mutant hordes a chance at success.
Speaking of chits - the only game I ever had a chance to try chits was in Dungeon. When I acquired AotM, I was slightly dreading having to deal with all those chits. But it wasn't that bad!
