Pawn Stars is probably my favorite show on cable right now. It profiles a family run pawn shop in Las Vegas Nevada. A pawn shop, for those of you who don't know, is a business where people buy and sell goods. Pawn shops also provide a service called, "pawning". If a person wishes to pawn an item, the pawn shop temporarily takes possession of the item, and loans the person money against it. When you have enough money to pay back the loan, you take it to the pawn shop and pick up the item you pawned. It is pretty simple banking.

The pawn shop profiled in Pawn Stars is run by a father and son duo, accompanied by a grandson and several other employees. Each day, they have a variety of items come into the shop, and they never know what will come in next. They've seen everything from 17th century firearms, old cannons and presidential documents, to Super Bowl rings, old cars, glass swords, and prehistoric shark tooth collections. But they also see a ton of fake goods, and they often call in experts to tell them exactly what they are looking to buy. The employees are nuts, and are always fighting with each other. They are also stubborn dealers, and get many customers upset with their low offers.

All in all, Pawn Stars is a great show. It is funny, educational, and very interesting. Since I am into American History, I really enjoy learning about all the old stuff that comes into the shop. Anyone with a love of history and a good sense of humor should enjoy Pawn Stars. It is on the History Channel right now until 9 o'clock Eastern Time if you want to flip it on.

Sounds like Antiques Roadshow meets American Chopper - me likey! I'm sure they a lot of addicted gamblers (and those with other addictions) to bring stuff in, both lowbrow and highbrow.

Yea, thats like exactly what it is like. The employees are actually comparable to the American Chopper guys and its like the antique roadshow with even more bizarre people coming in and a lot cooler stuff.

I like this show, same with American Pickers.

American Pickers would be so much better if the tall guy wasn't on the show. Something about him just drives me crazy, and I am not the first person to say that. I really enjoy all the weird people they find on that show though. It is fascinating what they have collected over the years.

I can't help but stop flipping the channel when either of those two shows are on, interesting stuff.

Same here. Both are great shows. I find that I like Pawn Stars a little bit better, though, because I can relate to the items a lot more than most of the stuff on American Pickers. Half the stuff on American Pickers I just have to stop and say to myself "How does that have any value at all, who would want something like that," whereas with Pawn Stars I can generally see the value in a lot of things that walk in the door.

Either way, both shows have great people and very interesting content.

Every single time I watch this show, I'm amazed that Chumley hasn't been fired three a dozen times over . . . .

Chumlee's the comedy relief. The show's awesome. I don't think there's many shows liek it, except american pickers.

Well, I know that another network now has a show called "Hardcore Pawn" (harr harr), so it has spawned at least one clone. I also think Spike (might have been another network) now has a show called "Scrappers" or something like that, which is basically a direct clone of American Pickers.

I miss when the History Channel actually had history on it. I shouldn't be surprised to see historical content on the History Channel. Oh wait, forgive me, History.

Ah well, off to the Military Channel. They play The World at War and The First World War all night long.

;) Pawn Stars and American Pickers are the only reality shows I watch. PS is better because of the interaction with the general public, as opposed to only specialty collecters the regulars meet on AP. I don't think of the PS staff as hard fisted at all, as the expectations of the public in their objects are often ridiculous, and the store has to make a profit. In fact, I'm amazed how often PS takes a chance on profit because they just like something a lot!!!

I sold off my old Britain's metal toy soldiers collection years ago, and got half of the price it was worth, a nice chunk of change, because as the owner explained, there had to be some money in it for him as well (I now collect plastic toy soldiers).

What I like best on PS is the combination of how informed the staff is about so many things (or the experts they consult with regularly). It shows how "regular folks" who are not academics treasure stuff and the history behind it. Which is very, very cool.

I don't think either show is really all that far off considering the number of historical items they come across. Heck, that's all American Pickers showcases.

 I agree that HISTORY has fewer historical shows on than it used to have, but Pawn Stars and American Pickers are more history oriented than Ice Road Truckers, UFO/Monster Hunting, etc.!

I enjoy both of those shows, but like Pawn Stars better. I enjoy learning about a lot of the cool things that people bring in there to sell and the consultants telling you the history of the item/s. I also really love when then take a beat up barber chair or coke machine and get it fully restored. I enjoy seeing the craftsmanship of the tradespeople that work on those items in restoring them.

I like the show but I don't like how it's on the history channel. Half the stuff on the history channel isn't even history anymore, like Ice Road Trucker and the flying show.
